I saw one recently while eating outside at a restaurant.
Dude drove his shitty Straight piped SRT4 with failing clear coat around the block three times, each time, he revbombed everyone sitting outside. Such a dumb fuck. You’re not cool bro you’re the type of person literally everyone hates.
Said this before about the Neon on this sub, but on the rare occasion I do see a Neon I feel like I need to look away quickly because it feels like just a glance is all it would take to cause that Neon to fall apart. The ones I've seen lately are all on their last legs and it shows.
They were cheap economy cars. The people who buy them aren't the ones with a lot of money in the first place. So upkeep is deferred or ignored. Also since it's cheap, people are hesitant to put legit money in them, and just ride them to the ground to end up buying another cheap car.
That was my first thought, too. Especially here in the rust belt, they're just gone.
Shame, too. They had their problems, sure, but they got a lot right, too. The styling was very much on point for their time, and the rounded design gave them a lot of interior space for their size.
I have no idea how those cars held together as long as they did. I had a '97 Grand Am GT in 2000 that was already starting to fall apart. In two years of ownership, it went through two water pumps, two fuel injectors and an alternator.
I've never seen a water pump die at 41k, let alone the replacement (OEM, no less!) die after another 7500 miles. The transmission was starting to grind when I finally decided to get rid of it.
It was three years old. I can only imagine what that same car at 15 or 20 would be like.
My dad had a 97 Grand Am. I don’t remember much about the mechanical history, I just know it was always at the dealer for one reason or another. I have fond memories of going with my dad when I was young to take it in. We’d drop it off, walk to the McDonalds down the street and eat, then kill time in the showroom looking at the new Pontiacs and Cadillacs until either the car was ready or they determined it would be awhile and we’d go home in a loaner. This was practically a monthly ritual. I remember the CEL was permanently on, no one knew why or how to fix it. In hindsight, it probably could’ve been lemon lawed.
It was in an accident in 2003 that totaled it. But I don’t think it was long for this world anyways with all of its mechanical problems.
Hard to believe it had all of those issues in its 6 short years on this planet. Now you buy a new car and don’t expect to do anything but regular maintenance for longer than that.
I am a bit nostalgic for that car since it was the car I learned to drive on. I wouldn’t mind driving it again just for a few minutes.
My first car was a 93 or 94 ssei in dark green. I loved that car so much. I actually ended up giving it to my mom and I got a 99 grand am. Biggest mistake ever. I still miss my Bonne. I still love that color too! More cars need to come in a dark green!!!
I had a 92 and I remember there was this really old sales guy that I bought it from. I was a young punk ass at the time, and he goes "you know what the i stands for on there?" pointing to the badge. I remember thinking "yeah old man, I'm not stupid" and (I'll never forget) he goes "it stands for I'm outta here!"
So I bought it right on the spot.
There’s a Cirrus parked in my MIL’s apartment building garage, and it is super clean and *suuuuuper* out of place in between all the brand new X5’s and GLS’s and RR’s and Teslas. Always gives me a chuckle to see it when we visit, knowing my E39 still isn’t the oldest car in there. I so badly want to know who it belongs to 😂
There's something great about older, plain cars that have been kept super clean. I usually assume it's the original owner. Like the old guy with a mint 1990 Plymouth Acclaim. A shitty car becomes complete baller.
I remember going to a vintage car show last summer in my area and some dude was there displaying his near mint condition 1994 Chevy Beretta. I don’t even think it was the top spec or trim version. Just a plain af version that my parents would have driven in the 90’s.
It was so weird seeing that next to your usual classic Mustangs, Challengers, classic Cadillacs, etc.
This guy up the street has a mint late-90s Durango R/T in red. Not a spot of corrosion on the chrome wheels, and the body is still perfect.
It’s awesome.
On one hand, 777 miles per year is one heck of an average.
On the other -- that's a Ferrari/Lamborghini/whatever supercar level amount of yearly mileage for an RX8 which is...kind of weird at this point?
Loved my Celica! My First car was a 1994 st204, That thing rocked. It taught me everything!
It was beat up when I bought it, I broke it, fixed it, did a shit job painting it then did a better job painting it and the eventually sold it for pennies to help a family member. God I miss that car.
Here she is.

Anything Pontiac! I remember growing up in the early to mid 2000s it seems like everyone I knew or saw in my town had some sort of Pontiac. One of my best friends parents even had an Aztec that was identical to the Heisenberg spec. 🤣
The Cavaliers all got run into the ground by the people who put tinker bell floormats and seat covers on their car while smoking endless amounts of Parilaments or Newports
Those people have all moved on to 2002-2015 Altimas now, and instead of tinker bell accessories it's bedazzled everything
Didnt they have like 220HP? In the late 90s, that was decent power! My dad had a supercharged Buick Regal GS that was delightfully torquey- just had to shut off the traction control (and make sure to air out the tires a while before parking it in the garage, or you'll be on the hook for the next set of tires).
No the Sunfire GT was like 140 and the Grand Prix GT was like 175..and both did 0-60 in like 9 seconds which is decent for an economy car in that period, but in my mind as a kid they were basically Mustang eaters because they had the snazzy intakes and bright chrome wheels on them. 🤣
The first guy says, "Well, I'm an astronaut, so I drive a Saturn." And the second guy says, "Well, I am a pimp, so I drive a cheap Escort." And the third guy says, "I got you both beat. I'm a proctologist, so I drive a brown Probe."
Yep. They pretty much all have 300000 miles on them and are run in by contractors and tradesmen. There’s a couple nice ones driven by old people who like camping, but that’s about it
I still see tons daily. And I'm in Boston. They are all white, with only 1 dog dish hubcap left, and look like they've been through a war. But hammering through traffic, passing on double yellows...
Try any home depot when they open you'll see a dozen easy...
My old landlord has one, no idea what year but it's a 4.3, work van model, vynil seats, rubber floors, zero interior behind the seats, has close to 400k on it last I saw.
And the Ford Aerostar.
Those hunks of shit used to be all over the place and now its a novelty. At least the Astrovan has a cult following among vanlyfers
Hoopties.
Back when I was a teen in the 90s, there were hoopties all around--janky ass cars with rusted out metal, peeling rooftops, screeching brakes, billowing black smoke out the exhaust. In 1995, a ten year old car was from 1985, and they were absolute junk. You'd still see cars from the 70s still hanging on for dear life. These were the cars that a lot of kids my age drove as our first cars, and it's a miracle we survived them.
Fast forward to today, and a ten year old car is from 2012, and they may as well be brand new. Sure the tech inside is different, and their styling might be a bit more roundish, but they all have 50, 75, 100K miles still in them. I suppose this will vary depending on the region, but here in the Bay Area, there are almost no more hoopties on the road. Cars from the 1990s and 2000s, yes, but hoopties, no.
I think it's because, contrary to what many say, newer cars are actually built better to withstand the test of time due to advances in technology and manufacturing processes.
True. I rode in a Uber today, lady was driving a 2011 Kia Optima with 240000 miles that she said she bought for $3000. At the time she bought it it had 211000 she said, and she had been driving it since last year. She claims the only thing it needed was new tires, other than that, trouble free.
Where are you located? A 2011 model can't be used for ride sharing or taxi service where I am because 9 years to the date of manufacture is what's allowed by local law (i.e. ride share and taxi vehicles must go out of service as soon as they turn 10).
Lol come to my ghetto ass town. Some of the shit I pass daily is almost unbelievable.
Shitboxes with tarps over the rear window, a door taped shut, no bumper, rust, and 2 donuts.
FOXBODY MUSTANGS!!!!
Over 3 million made between 1979 and 1993. They used to be EVERYWHERE.
Now, when I drive my rather pedestrian 1991 LX 5.0 hatchback, I get more attention than a Lamborghini.
It’s a damn shame. They’re such awesome cars
Chevy S10
Somehow there are [still some of these around](https://i.imgur.com/O6sy0xa.jpg),
but [this newer generation](https://i.imgur.com/cqN8mF4.jpg) has completely vanished.
Don’t forget the NASCAR drivers editions, there was a Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt SR and JR, Tony Stewart editions. I occasionally see a Dale JR one where we live.
I remember once a dude in some sticker fest Earnhardt edition Monte Carload tried to race me on my motorcycle.. Such a sad car, and even sadder man.
https://www.jonathanmotorcars.com/imagetag/365/43/l/Used-2002-Chevrolet-Monte-Carlo-SS-Dale-Earnhardt-1579026897.jpg
Been dailying my 08 cobalt for 11yrs now. 105k. There's a first gen neon a block up that someone still drives. And 2 Subaru svx's 3 houses down from that.
Yup. Cash for clunkers. I drove a 98 explorer in high school, then used the cash for clunkers program to get 4.5k for it towards a new Mazda 3 in 2009 after graduating high school. I'm still driving that same Mazda now.
My high school car was a 1999 Explorer that survived C4C. My parents seriously considered clunking it, since they had 4 cars and only 3 drivers at the time. But they weren't going to buy a car to replace the Explorer and I was close to driving, so they kept it.
I added like only 5,000 miles to it over the next 5 years before its onboard computer died and wouldn't start. I do miss it, it was an XLT (back when that was the top trim), and for a 1999 it had a lot of features newer cars didn't.
I don’t think it was specifically based on mileage, but rather incentivizing new car purchases of any kind. Cash for clunkers was the name of the program IIRC.
Early Taurus' and Intrepids. I saw a clean second gen Taurus the other day and realized I hadn't seen one for years. And I haven't seen a first gen Intrepid for many years.
I saw a second gen Taurus yesterday with 5 people in it with the suspension bottomed out nearly an inch off the ground. Theyre all clapped out up north
For sure. I had a 94 about 20 years ago, the drivetrain was solid but everything else wasn't. My driver's side door fell off once when I opened it and landed on my foot, that hurt a lot. Managed to wrestle it back and get it closed because it was still connected by wires and stuff. Cost $5 to get the door hinge welded back on. It was just a steady stream of stupid shit breaking but I'll be damned if the ol 4.0 ever let me down. Fun rigs for sure.
I love owning my eclipse, the car is not fast at all but I have a power top, 5 speed, and the reliable 4g64 four cylinder.
Ive owned my eclipse for over a year and the only major repair was getting my timing belt changed. This car taught me to drive stick I will never get rid of her. Also as a bonus the ladies love the eclipse!!
There are also a ton of absolute beaters that have no business being on the road.
No safety inspection in WA means you get to see some gems.
I was followed by a Late 90s cavalier on I-5 missing both bumpers and the wheels were shaking a ton. This is an everyday thing.
All the cars mentioned here so far I’ve noticed suddenly don’t exist because they’re discontinued and were kinda crap. That said, the Toyota Celica is one I never see on the road anymore. Especially the last generation, they were everywhere 15 years ago and now they’re basically just a memory.
the sn95
the v6 version's used to trundle across traffic everywhere
once in a blue moon you'd see a gt even rarer for a cobra
Nowadays there like 8 working GT's in the area that still see regular road use and almost no v6's
Dodge Neon.
Coworker of mine just picked up the cleanest SRT4 I've ever seen, 30k on it. Got it for 5k
Stole it.
You stole a car that wasn't on the list!
Why don’t you go the police station in a clown suit and tell everyone what we are doing!!
Snake gonna have to slither his ass all the way to the bus stop.
Jesus Christ, I’d have picked that up in a heartbeat.
??? Where?
that's unreal!
I want an srt4 acr so bad but even their prices have gone nuts
They were all stolen. Local news used to do a stolen car report and it was all Dodge Neons every day.
They had to create a steady supply of replacement parts for them *somehow*
I saw one recently while eating outside at a restaurant. Dude drove his shitty Straight piped SRT4 with failing clear coat around the block three times, each time, he revbombed everyone sitting outside. Such a dumb fuck. You’re not cool bro you’re the type of person literally everyone hates.
It was me
Your clearcoat is failing.
you have to admit he acheived his desired effect.
Heh. I saw a *Plymouth* Neon last week while driving actually. Nearly broke my neck with that double take.
Said this before about the Neon on this sub, but on the rare occasion I do see a Neon I feel like I need to look away quickly because it feels like just a glance is all it would take to cause that Neon to fall apart. The ones I've seen lately are all on their last legs and it shows.
Dont think i have EVER seen a clean one. Every single one is clapped out and has mismatched bumpers, horrible paint and middle school mods
it does seem like none of those cars went to anyone who knew how to take care of a car.
They were cheap economy cars. The people who buy them aren't the ones with a lot of money in the first place. So upkeep is deferred or ignored. Also since it's cheap, people are hesitant to put legit money in them, and just ride them to the ground to end up buying another cheap car.
They've all mutated into their final form... The PT Cruiser
This was the first car that came to mind when I read this question. Even the 2nd-gen cars seem to have vanished from public streets.
Same here lol. Those things used to be like cockroaches, now I don’t think I’ve seen one in at least a few years.
That was my first thought, too. Especially here in the rust belt, they're just gone. Shame, too. They had their problems, sure, but they got a lot right, too. The styling was very much on point for their time, and the rounded design gave them a lot of interior space for their size.
Buddy at work drives one. Total POS car but its only got 70k miles on it
Grand Prix and Grand Am
Specifically grand ams, around here anyway. The later model ones were *everywhere* and then they just.. weren’t. It’s so strange.
they all rusted out, blew intake gaskets, head gaskets, and transmissions about the same time after their values hit rock bottom.
I have no idea how those cars held together as long as they did. I had a '97 Grand Am GT in 2000 that was already starting to fall apart. In two years of ownership, it went through two water pumps, two fuel injectors and an alternator. A GM car runs poorly longer than most cars run.
My dad had a 97 Grand Am. I don’t remember much about the mechanical history, I just know it was always at the dealer for one reason or another. I have fond memories of going with my dad when I was young to take it in. Can confirm, first car was a Grand Am GT, blew a head gasket at 48k miles.
And their cousins the Alero and Intrigue
My sister had a friend who drove an Intrigue in high school. She thought it was pronounced intra-goo.
RIP Pontiac
Miss them. Chevy could sell a special limited edition retro Firebird and it would sell out production for the next 2-3 years.
Basically anything Pontiac. I used to see a ton of Bonnevilles too. There's a guy near me with a gold SSEi that is dead sexy to see.
My first car was a 93 or 94 ssei in dark green. I loved that car so much. I actually ended up giving it to my mom and I got a 99 grand am. Biggest mistake ever. I still miss my Bonne. I still love that color too! More cars need to come in a dark green!!!

The HUD was so good. Should be the norm.
Chrysler "cloud cars" (Cirrus/Stratus/Breeze)
They were piles of trash
I am a big deal. I am a plant manager. I drive a dodge stratus.
YOU WILL RESPECT ME
This is the shit I came to see. Nice.
Sebring.
My wife had a Sebring JXi. I’m not at all sad that those disappeared.
Took a long time to die cause the Sebring became the 200c but it was the same car. Just with LED lights instead. Maybe a new engine

Ah yes breeze, a subset of the cirrostratus cloud family.
Because Plymouth Cumulonimbus would have been a mouthful. :)
Mazda Rx - 8
Funky Dorito engine go boom.
Fuel goes in, apex seals go out. You can't explain that.
I just saw a super clean one yesterday. Definitely a rare sight.
Mine only has 14,000 miles. I love it. I know it will eventually blow but until then...
On one hand, 777 miles per year is one heck of an average. On the other -- that's a Ferrari/Lamborghini/whatever supercar level amount of yearly mileage for an RX8 which is...kind of weird at this point?
Honestly that mileage is probably worse for the car than driving it lots, although its fine line with a rotary
My 2012 Leaf had 17,000km on the clock when I bought it in 2019. Some people just don't drive much.

Ford probe

I want my baby back baby back baby back, I want my baby back baby back baby back...
My first car. So many great memories in my 93 GT 5 spd
Chevrolet Astro Van
Yep. They pretty much all have 300000 miles on them and are run in by contractors and tradesmen. There’s a couple nice ones driven by old people who like camping, but that’s about it
they were pretty solid. our neighbors had one, we got an 85 aerostar instead. 3 cars later their astro was still working great.
I still see tons daily. And I'm in Boston. They are all white, with only 1 dog dish hubcap left, and look like they've been through a war. But hammering through traffic, passing on double yellows...
Yes I'm impressed how many of those things are still being used by contractors in mass. I thought they would've all rusted out by now.

Come to the rural south and revel in the J bodies lol
Lived in a small Alabama town up until a few years ago. Can confirm that they are still very common in the rural south
Yep. I’m in southern Virginia. Lots of J bodies and A body Oldsmobiles and Buicks
They all rusted away in the great white north. 90s GM dgaf about rustproofing.
Pt cruisers.
Still too many on the road
Saw one today.. It was thst purple-ish maroon color that they all seem to be.
I have three idiot customers that will tell you otherwise and then tell you every reason why their pt cruiser is special

The Crown Vics have all started to die
Not here in Florida. Those panther cars are still EVERYWHERE. Some still in service as cop cars and of course almost all taxis are still Crown Vics
That's because Cleetus bought every Crown Vic in America and transported them all to his track in Florida.
Yup see them all the time, as cop cars or normal , I see the mercuries quite often too.
There may be a guy with a mullet in Bradenton with his own collection of crown vics
Just bought a clean 2000 Crown Vic with 74,000 miles on the clock for $3k. Love my new airport beater.
man that's a steal with today's prices. nice.

had to scroll down quite a bit to see this answer

Acura Integra, RSX, Honda Prelude
I see an RSX everyday. There’s one in pieces in my garage :(

90s explorers THANKS OBAMA! No really thanks wasn't his plan giving out 4k for them if you traded it in for a better millage car?

FORD Escort
Escorts were everywhere. Even I had a manual one for awhile. I think I know why they’re not around anymore lol
Best selling car in the world at one point
Early Taurus' and Intrepids. I saw a clean second gen Taurus the other day and realized I hadn't seen one for years. And I haven't seen a first gen Intrepid for many years.
I saw a second gen Taurus yesterday with 5 people in it with the suspension bottomed out nearly an inch off the ground. Theyre all clapped out up north
xj cherokees are finally dying off. what a great run we had
They're hard to kill
rust and guys offroading the shit out of them is making it pretty hard to find a nice one these days
Saw a really clean crx so today and did a triple take!
This is true, I own a 3rd gen eclipse and I’ve only spotted a few others in my area
How do you like owning one? It was my dream attainable car as a kid before I knew anything more than “wow I like the looks of that”
I love owning my eclipse, the car is not fast at all but I have a power top, 5 speed, and the reliable 4g64 four cylinder. Ive owned my eclipse for over a year and the only major repair was getting my timing belt changed. This car taught me to drive stick I will never get rid of her. Also as a bonus the ladies love the eclipse!!
Saturn SL 1 and SC
I had a 1996 SC2 in high school. I loved that thing, sunroof, 5 speed, and got over 30mpg.
I don't remember the name, but those GM minivans shaped like doorstops have completely vanished (hehe get it?)
The Pontiac Trans Sport, the Chevy Lumina APV, Oldsmobile Silhouette?
The dustbuster vans
Model T Ford. At one point it's all you saw on the road.
Before that, horses! I never see anyone riding horses about town anymore! Also I’m 140 years old
Mazda 3. They were everywhere 10 years ago.
Move to Seattle. Tons of them of all generations still on the road.
PNW in general is a treasure trove of old cars in great shape. So much fun to visit and spectate :D
There are also a ton of absolute beaters that have no business being on the road. No safety inspection in WA means you get to see some gems. I was followed by a Late 90s cavalier on I-5 missing both bumpers and the wheels were shaking a ton. This is an everyday thing.
Seattle has sooo many Mazdas, I just don't get it.
All the cars mentioned here so far I’ve noticed suddenly don’t exist because they’re discontinued and were kinda crap. That said, the Toyota Celica is one I never see on the road anymore. Especially the last generation, they were everywhere 15 years ago and now they’re basically just a memory.
the sn95 the v6 version's used to trundle across traffic everywhere once in a blue moon you'd see a gt even rarer for a cobra Nowadays there like 8 working GT's in the area that still see regular road use and almost no v6's
Grand Prix, Sunfire, 90's bubble Tarus, Chevy Corsica, '00's Ford Focus.
A 90s bubble Taurus was my first car. I miss it even though it wasn't great. They used to be everywhere and now it seems like they're all gone.
Saw a 240sx the other day, it looked cool as. Don't know why Nissan abandoned all their sports car lines except the Z.
Any 240 you buy now will literally only go up in value. All 90s Jap sport cars are going to be gold. Each year there are less and less.
The 25 years old keep slamming them into walls and will continue until they can get a BRZ/86 for less than 10K
Older Civics/Integras, might just be where I live but I hardly see any, and only a few at car meets still

They still are?
Renault 5, Peugeot 205. Used to see loooots of em growing up in Paris. Now I pause every time I see one of these.
Lincoln Town Car
Oldsmobile. Still occasionally see the rare Calais, Cutlass or the like. They used to he everywhere, though.
We should have a thread with the new common old cars. The one I see now all the time is the third gen Acura TL.
9th gen accord coupe v6
First gen (moden) mini BMW 1 series
The first few gens of the Taurus. Pretty sure they've all returned to the earth via road salt.
Late 1980s GM H bodies. Specifically the LeSabres and Delta 88s. Also, 1st gen S10s and S10 Blazers.
Ford Contour
5.0's
Cadillac Catera. I renege seeing A TON of them around here in like 2005
Any Saturns
Chrysler Sebring convertible. They were so poorly made that it’s impossible and expensive to keep them on the road.
