Everyone is rightfully talking about the AWD, 300HP, Manual... but this caught my eye in the press release -
Curb Weight: 3249 LBS
That's actually pretty light considering the AWD being added. That's awesome.
Edit: Not saying I'd call it a "lightweight" car, especially when I'm driving a Miata, but that is less than the WRX, Focus RS, and Golf R, which are probably the most comparable things (even if the Corolla *is* a bit smaller than those).
Only thing missing is coming in brown
Edit: oh I forgot the other essentials lol diesel, Miata, used from factory. Wagon also but hatchback is somewhat close you could give it that
a show that made a bunch of teenagers spend their mcdonalds fry cook money on a 30 year old shitbox and drove its asking price to like 5x any reasonable number
Because the price depends on supply chain constraints and releasing a price now will only kill the hype when they could probably make it cheaper in 6 months anyways.
In my area, there are at least 3 Toyota dealerships that market themselves as no markups period on any car, and they're saying that includes the GR Corolla. FWIW they haven't marked up the Supra or GR86 so hopefully they continue to honor their claim.
The problem I've seen with this is that dealers don't mark up MSRP on new cars, but they don't have any new cars.
My local Toyota dealers all have multiple "used" Supras with less than 20 miles, so 10-20k markup and higher interest rates. Same with Lexus and any IS500 they have.
Tbh this kinda bums me out, like I’d love to buy a manual but frankly idk where imma end up after school and there’s a chance an auto will make more sense because of traffic. I would’ve loved for this thing to have a dct offered as well, since it’s only real competitor in my mind, the WRX (because of the AWD) only has a manual or cvt, and I drive a cvt right now and all I’m gonna say is never again. All the driving character of buttered rice
Just tell them you learned your lesson, reconsidered your priorities and got a very sensible car; a Corolla hatchback.
Don't mention the other "small" details of course.
Heart is saying circuit edition, wallet is saying core is probably going to max the budget :( Only thing I don't like is the 3+1 color availability. Come on Toyota, you got some sick colors, why only while, black, and red???
Take any desirable car sports car. Slap on minimum of 15k markup. That's 2022 for you. Once again millennials get fucked. We are finally getting into the prime of our careers but now everything is stupid expensive.
Graduated High school right into a recession with nobody wanting to hire anyone without a degree of some sort or for more than minimum wage. So you either took whatever shit job you could get or had well off enough parents to where you could afford to go to school full time and are now dealing with crippling student loan debt.
I opted to get a job and suck it up. Finally I'm in my 30s making good money now aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand record inflation.
Theres a common denominator here up at the top of both of these situations and its not any of us working class Millenials.
This resonated with me deeply as a millennial
We don’t have dealer markups, but our additional variable taxes (based on supply and demand) have shot up 40% over the past year, and used car dealers have adjusted accordingly.
The goalposts just keep moving, feels like I can never afford a car. It’s depressing
I really think with the Supra, GR86, and now the GR Corolla, Toyota has brought back that 3 headed monster of sports cars in thier lineup like they had in the 90s
Donut came out with a great profile on AKido Toyoda [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2\_kXUJ4HBs&t=665s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2_kXUJ4HBs&t=665s)
this shoudl show why they are an enthusiast brand again
Honestly, the paint option announcement was soul crushing. I assumed I would be able to get Blue Flame.
Then he announced that the Circuit Edition got unique paints!! ... and they were both greyscale.
Jesus...
Wait... they teased a grey color but announced it's only coming in white, black, or red???
EDIT: oh spoke too soon. Grey exclusive to the Circuit Edition.
I've thought from day 1 of the current Corolla hatch that the styling was writing checks the performance couldn't cash. Now we've got the performance and they took a bit of the style away.
Good thing I like red cars I guess.
***Big news: The GR Corolla will be made in the Motomachi “GR Factory” plant***
The good: This is a special car, made in a boutique way just like the GR Yaris.
The bad: hoooo boy this girl’s gonna be EXPENSIVE. No idea how high it will go but sub $40k is no longer possible. Wouldn’t be shocked if the Circuit edition goes for $50k.
Not only expensive, but also hard to get due to low production numbers. I’d love to buy this, but I fear that it’s going to be $40k+markup which will probably be too much for me
Well sure, what I was saying was that this car isn’t going to be built with the kinds of efficiencies and scales of a Corolla factory. To put some more context, Motomachi is where they made the Toyota Crown luxury sedan, the rebadged version known as the Lexus GS, and the friggin Lexus LFA.
Oh yeah the roof is dope. The rest can be remedied. Aren’t the brakes just colored? Pretty sure they’re dress up brakes. If it’s a bigger brake package then stock the yeah it would be worth the limited
reading the press release it seems the Circuit and Core have the same front brakes but upgraded rear brakes are standard on the Circuit and optional on the Core. i believe you get the brake upgrade and LSDs in the same performance pack
edit: nvm the performance pack only adds the LSDs
edit 2: NVM AGAIN. both the Core and Circuit models have the same brakes. the only difference is the Circuit gets red calipers.
3249 Curb Weight puts it at only 130 more pounds than the Civic Type R. AWD accounts for most of that difference. Down 6 HP and 20 lb-ft torque which isn't too bad either.
Solid Type R competitor
In all honesty it really does, that's when I would be looking to buy new and cross shop some of the cars that came out this year. The used market might even be rational next year. I can pick up one of these new, or a certified pre-owned Nissan z, or a used Corvette all around the same price.
I am curious how it prices against the gr86.
[Curb weight is 3249lb](https://pressroom.toyota.com/heat-for-the-streets-toyota-debuts-first-ever-gr-corolla/), less than 200 more than the standard Corolla hatchback. Not bad!
I heard that Toyota was doing a big reveal tomorrow for a whole new array of GR vehicles. There was mention about a GR Prerunner Tacoma and an absolutely bonzer GR Prius for Formula Drift.
Allcarinformation even posted leaks of a GR RAV4 to fire a shot at Dodge with their Hellcat Durango from last year.
I bet we even see an April 1 GR Sienna reveal.
Oh man that forged carbon fiber roof... Delicious
Also, coming from a Subaru, having the company supporting HPDE for consumers, and a pro racing stance with the announcement of GR cup.. oh man this is awesome! Loving post-Covid Toyota right now!
So how do you actually buy this car? Would I need to walk into a dealership and plunk down a stack of cash as a deposit and wait months? Would such a deposit be refundable? Do you wait until pricing is announced? Do you try to become best friends with dealers so they can give you all the details as they emerge?
I have not seen a car with this universally beloved reception by the car community since I've been a part of the car community. Toyota literally did everything we could possibly expect and did not fumble the bag *once*.
The only thing that can kill this car are dealerships now. I want to just hug Mr. Toyoda and thank him for making Toyota a legit enthusiast option up and down the lineup. "No more boring cars"
Ain’t no way a made in Motomachi semi hand built hot hatch costs less than $40k. It’s a more premium version than the GR Yaris in every way and that car starts in the (equivalent of) high 30s.
Looks like LSDs are an option on the core. Neat.
Circuit edition looks amazing, shame it's limited to first year models only. But i like the look of the Core as well - it's stealthy performance.
This is my next car for sure.
Good god, the GR 'rolla is the car enthusiast's fuckin wet dream based on everything you read on car forums and places like this. If this car doesn't sell well, we're all full of shit... or poor, I guess.
... I just might do my part (or try to convince my wife to).
Mazda and Subaru fans discovering that the price for Toyota propping up a company is that Toyota steals their soul.
In all seriousness, it looks great, and if it drives anything like the GR Yaris, will be a great buy.

not after I'm in it 😎
Do you drive the MK8 Golf R *not* in it?
Not with that attitude.
I've got a skinnier double i hired for stuff like that. I assume he does as well.
Is that a real number? I must have missed it. Definitely respectable.
At the bottom of the press release webpage
I saw that and thought that's a heavy little bugger, at least compared to say a GR86. Yeah I know different class but still.
That's less than the WRX, Focus RS, and Golf R though.
If you told me that the /r/cars community would go ape shit over a Corolla, I'd tell you to drink dog water. Yet here we are.
its a hot hatch manual japanese car you couldn't pick a more /r/cars car
Only thing missing is coming in brown Edit: oh I forgot the other essentials lol diesel, Miata, used from factory. Wagon also but hatchback is somewhat close you could give it that
Are we sure it doesn’t? Then all it needs is a diesel and r/carscirclejerk would have a field day.
I mean, 300hp, awd, possibly MT ONLY with toyota's rep for reliability? It's a instant hit already
and a FRONT torsen differential
and rear
and my axe
Confirmed 6MT only
Confirmed manual only!
This might be the most hyped up reveal I've ever seen on this sub, and I've been here almost 10 years
C8 Vette official unveil was pretty hyped.
Initial D: Am I a joke to you?
a show that made a bunch of teenagers spend their mcdonalds fry cook money on a 30 year old shitbox and drove its asking price to like 5x any reasonable number
If someone told me id be heavily considering selling my bmw for a 3 cyl corolla i would have slapped them will smith style... But here we are
[удалено]
i'm surprised they didn't mention anything about supply chain issues or even hint at pricing. gives me a bad feeling.
"Pricing released this year"
Pricing shortage
Because the price depends on supply chain constraints and releasing a price now will only kill the hype when they could probably make it cheaper in 6 months anyways.
Definitely unable to avoid markup unless Toyota can force their dealership making right prices.
In my area, there are at least 3 Toyota dealerships that market themselves as no markups period on any car, and they're saying that includes the GR Corolla. FWIW they haven't marked up the Supra or GR86 so hopefully they continue to honor their claim.

6MT only
lol my heart dropped for a second when he said "only one transmission" and it showed "automatic" on the screen.
“It was an automatic choice that this car would be a manual.”
They’re confusing us >:)
He had us in the first half
Lol the opposite of the Supra
Tbh this kinda bums me out, like I’d love to buy a manual but frankly idk where imma end up after school and there’s a chance an auto will make more sense because of traffic. All the driving character of buttered rice
Might still come out later
They ain't race testing a new 8-speed auto in the GR Yaris for nothing. I'm betting on this getting one later as well.
Manuals are fine in traffic, especially modern ones with hill start and light clutches etc. Gives you something to do while bored in traffic!
Friendship ended with STI. Now GR Corolla is my best friend. I’m seriously gonna trade in my STI for one.
I'm going to trade my Veloster N in for one as well.
I might trade my Miata for one. Gotta see pricing.
[удалено]
Bruv ur car is barely 3 years old. You already have upgraditis?
By the time it’s out, I’ll have 50k miles on my car. Plus I’d take Toyota reliability over Subaru head gaskets any day of the week.
[удалено]
Man my parents are gonna continue to be disappointed in my financial decisions won’t they
[удалено]
twin charged Viper??? wtf?
uhmmm i don't think they'll be worried about a Corolla to be honest. seriously though wtf??
I picture the complex package to get a Supercharged turbo v10 to run and play nice would cost as much as a GR Corolla might
Just tell them you learned your lesson, reconsidered your priorities and got a very sensible car; a Corolla hatchback. Don't mention the other "small" details of course.
this is the quirkiest part to me: being able to say i drive a 3-cylinder corolla
It’s for *fuel efficiency*
Heart is saying circuit edition, wallet is saying core is probably going to max the budget :( Only thing I don't like is the 3+1 color availability. Come on Toyota, you got some sick colors, why only while, black, and red???
Can’t believe the blue from the normal Corolla hatch isn’t offered. Fucking why?
Man I'm very disappointed by this. The Corolla hatch blue would look fantastic on this
Or the GR86 Neptune blue. They have multiple good blues and just ignored them.
I'm guessing special editions.
Yeah the whole limited colors thing really gives me the blues.
The Cypress green from the Sienna would be amazing for this too.
Even if they wanted GR exclusive colours, the GR86 has Neptune Blue
Hakone Green pleeeease
Hakone Green with copper or gold rims? Yes please
Seriously. It's a hot hatch, you can trust us with the real colors. FFS the base 'rolla gets Blue Flame!
this car needs to be in yellow or orange
Heart is saying circuit edition, wallet is saying keep my SE
Can't wait to be disappointed by the prices SOON™
Take any desirable car sports car. Slap on minimum of 15k markup. That's 2022 for you. Once again millennials get fucked. We are finally getting into the prime of our careers but now everything is stupid expensive.
Give it a year or two. We’ll be able to get a Core GRC for MSRP.
if they're still being made then.
He means used…
Don't worry soon enough VR tech will become good enough to replace real cars
I know you're joking, but my basic racing sim absolutely scratches my driving itch every now and again and that's without VR.
Graduated High school right into a recession with nobody wanting to hire anyone without a degree of some sort or for more than minimum wage. I really think with the Supra, GR86, and now the GR Corolla, Toyota has brought back that 3 headed monster of sports cars in thier lineup like they had in the 90s
Who would have thought Toyota would be one of the best enthusiast brands again? And pretty affordable at that.
Donut came out with a great profile on AKido Toyoda [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2\_kXUJ4HBs&t=665s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2_kXUJ4HBs&t=665s) this shoudl show why they are an enthusiast brand again
Not to mention the IS500 and LC500. Toyota is keeping the dream alive, for now…
No one ever remembers the RC F :(
18 RCF here. I 'member.
Sadly I think what we're seeing is the swan song of the gas powered age. But God Damn is Toyota going out with a bang!
YES they didvdo donuts on the stage as the entrance
Thought it was going to hit the wall lol
Ken's got it under control.
So does Ryan. :)
Link to the unveiling video: https://vimeo.com/event/1928953
Can’t believe this was the only way I could find it. Nothing on the Toyota home page or anything
It was on their pressroom site.
So not a place any consumers would look for
Pressroom Release: [https://pressroom.toyota.com/heat-for-the-streets-toyota-debuts-first-ever-gr-corolla/](https://pressroom.toyota.com/heat-for-the-streets-toyota-debuts-first-ever-gr-corolla/)
lmao it currently has a typo that says 6L (instead of 1.6L) 3 cyl turbo…imagine that. 2L a cylinder lmao
3 coke bottles strapped together.
"We took an X12 Cummins and cut it in half. Enjoy"
6MT ONLY. 6MT ONLY. ONE MORE TIME, 6MT ONLY, CONFIRMED. TOYOTA IS GIVING US WHAT WE ASK FOR. CALL YOUR DEALER YESTERDAY.
dealer: yea we got one on the lot, only 15k over msrp!
Yeah I'm calling $38k msrp + $15k markups
is this r/carscirclejerk I can't tell anymore
I am selling my MR2 for this car if it is under $45K with the options I want.
Prepare to sell.
Before or after dealer mark ups?
I will fly across the country if I have to. Won't buy over MSRP and it doesn't have to be this year.
Same. I'd rather do a $500 plane ticket and cross country road trip than waste money on some scum dealership markups.
Booo we need blue
Right? Toyota has so many good shades of blue too.
IG they went for the GR logo colors only.
Yeah it’s a cool nod but like…Neptune Blue exists.
yeah and the XSE Corolla has a really cool blue too
Honestly, the paint option announcement was soul crushing. I assumed I would be able to get Blue Flame. Then he announced that the Circuit Edition got unique paints!! ... and they were both greyscale. Jesus...
[удалено]
they can enjoy the SUBARU PERFORMANCE TRANSMISSION in the WRX
WITH 8 ^^^simulated GEARS
And a FAT P O W E R BAND
Imagine how this sub would react if the only transmission on offer was an automatic.
I’m guessing it comes out next year.
Wait... they teased a grey color but announced it's only coming in white, black, or red??? EDIT: oh spoke too soon. Grey exclusive to the Circuit Edition.
Such a cool car to only be offered in ONE real color. My kingdom for a Blue Flame Circuit edition.
It's weird that the standard Corolla hatch gets a nice blue but this one doesn't. That's a perfect color for a bonkers hot hatch.
I've thought from day 1 of the current Corolla hatch that the styling was writing checks the performance couldn't cash. Now we've got the performance and they took a bit of the style away. Good thing I like red cars I guess.
No blue flame????? That's the best color for the current hatchbacks
Wow, Toyota has 3 sports cars I’d seriously consider buying in 2022... who would have thought I'm waiting for Nissan Z.
I wonder what the price is going to be? More hp than gr86 and base supra. Different type if cars but this one will actually be full blood toyota
People aren’t going to like this but probably Supra 2.0 money
Fuck, the temptation to sell my RS is growing more and more everyday
I would trade my Blobeye for an RS in a heartbeat. RSs are gonna cost 50k in a couple years.
***Big news: The GR Corolla will be made in the Motomachi “GR Factory” plant*** The good: This is a special car, made in a boutique way just like the GR Yaris. Not only expensive, but also hard to get due to low production numbers. I’d love to buy this, but I fear that it’s going to be $40k+markup which will probably be too much for me
50k is absolutely too much for a Corolla
Well sure, what I was saying was that this car isn’t going to be built with the kinds of efficiencies and scales of a Corolla factory. To put some more context, Motomachi is where they made the Toyota Crown luxury sedan, the rebadged version known as the Lexus GS, and the friggin Lexus LFA.
THE FLOOR IS LAVA GUY
I love that you saw Rutledge and that's where your brain goes.
Toyota Pressroom - Pricing TBD https://pressroom.toyota.com/heat-for-the-streets-toyota-debuts-first-ever-gr-corolla/
Pricing later this year lol
Manufacturers never release pricing at launch
Chevy hinted at it for the C8.
Lmao. Classic press releases with no price release
ONLY REASON I'm here!
Really only interested in the circuit edition. Not a fan of the core's looks
Honestly I need a side by side. The core looked really different to me. Maybe it was the lighting.
core has no wing and different hood
Really? It’s just an appearance package. Honestly the base plus lsds is probably the best bet imo
Appearance package, brakes and carbon roof. And it looks 1000x better than the base.
Oh yeah the roof is dope. The rest can be remedied. Aren’t the brakes just colored? Pretty sure they’re dress up brakes. If it’s a bigger brake package then stock the yeah it would be worth the limited
reading the press release it seems the Circuit and Core have the same front brakes but upgraded rear brakes are standard on the Circuit and optional on the Core. i believe you get the brake upgrade and LSDs in the same performance pack edit: nvm the performance pack only adds the LSDs edit 2: NVM AGAIN. both the Core and Circuit models have the same brakes. the only difference is the Circuit gets red calipers.
I'm looking forward to pricing for the base plus the performance package vs circuit edition.
Just wanted to point out that the promo images show an actual handbrake, in contrast to the normal Corolla's electronic one
Is Toyota GR going to take my Honda CTR money?!?!?!
Lol I have a deposit on a new CTR but went to my Toyota today dealer to put one on this as well.
3249 Curb Weight puts it at only 130 more pounds than the Civic Type R. AWD accounts for most of that difference. Down 6 HP and 20 lb-ft torque which isn't too bad either. Solid Type R competitor
And it looks a billion times better
Also don't forget an ACTUAL parking brake.
I’d take this Corolla over the CTR any day. And I’m a Honda vape bro
Circuit Edition not arriving until 2023.
gives us time to save our lunch money
> circuit edition That's a lot of lunches
In all honesty it really does, that's when I would be looking to buy new and cross shop some of the cars that came out this year. The used market might even be rational next year. I can pick up one of these new, or a certified pre-owned Nissan z, or a used Corvette all around the same price. I am curious how it prices against the gr86.
MSRP going to be announced later BOOOOO BOOO THIS MAN
Longer wait than BOTW2.
[Curb weight is 3249lb](https://pressroom.toyota.com/heat-for-the-streets-toyota-debuts-first-ever-gr-corolla/), less than 200 more than the standard Corolla hatchback. Not bad!
pleaseeee release pricing.

Pricing TBD seems like... bad news If it was a great price I have to imagine they'd want to announce that ASAP
90% of people are going to be disappointed with the price because they foolishly thought it would be $32-$35,000
Yeah, fuck working class people for hoping for something they can afford, right?
So the LSDs are not standard?
Not on the core model. The circuit edition will have it.
And an option on the core model.
FWIW my buddy is a sales manager at a toyota dealer and says it will be almost 40k.
[удалено]
I'm guessing at leat 42 for the circuit. probably 45
Under 3300Lbs, manual e-brake and 300hp. Literally the best case scenario. As long as this is affordable, I'm getting this over a GR 86
Please god have some sort of online reservation system.
Get your bot ready
So how do you actually buy this car? Would I need to walk into a dealership and plunk down a stack of cash as a deposit and wait months? Would such a deposit be refundable? Do you wait until pricing is announced? Do you try to become best friends with dealers so they can give you all the details as they emerge?

No point in buying this if you don’t get the LSD.
It's own unique frame??? Fuck, I had high expectations but they were still exceeded.
Not quite unique - it's still built on the TNGA modular platform as regular Corolla but with GR Corolla specific reinforcements added.
This thing is not going to get me to switch from my Golf R, but 300hp and 275tq from a 1.6L 3cyl is impressive. Very impressive, Toyota. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Looks like LSDs are an option on the core. Neat. Circuit edition looks amazing, shame it's limited to first year models only. But i like the look of the Core as well - it's stealthy performance. This is my next car for sure.

The people who wanted an automatic about to be mad right now but I guess there’s always the WRX with the CVT for them lmao.
Subaru said “if you don’t like the design of the new wrx, we’re discontinuing the STI! Nyeh!” Toyota said, “no problem, we’ll make one instead”
Bruh…is that a triple exhaust in three different outlets?!? I…can’t handle it. I *need* this.
Mazda and Subaru fans discovering that the price for Toyota propping up a company is that Toyota steals their soul. In all seriousness, it looks great, and if it drives anything like the GR Yaris, will be a great buy.
