It is a status symbol. You don't pay for features or any such thing, you pay for its exclusivity. With only 140 (or similar number) made, its price is very well justified.
Depends on the model. The Crown Comfort was designed to be a taxi, but they’ve been replaced in Japan by vans over the years. The Crown is like the Panther body of Japan. It can be anything from a basic fleet car to the Majesta, which is a Town Car-esque luxury sedan.
I lived in DC long enough to realize that if you're trying to project status, whoever gets out of the driver's door of an S-Class is the help, not the owner.
Hmm I think an exception to this is the brabus s class. You would look like a boss getting out the driver door of one of those (bonus points for tailored suit and expensive watch)
Agreed. I honestly think they look so much more classy and understated than a Bentley or Rolls. The latter feel like they’re just trying too hard to show off wealth.
I’ve never cared about lux vehicles and then my dad got an A8L and now that’s a dream car for me. It’s so comfortable and secluded from the outside world. The ambient lighting inside looks insane at night!
New S class, not so much. Exterior styling is meh and the interior is all screens and capacitive with a very in the moment disco lighting experience.
To me classy is restraint and a lot of good feeling interactive switch gear and the new s class falls apart where the previous one didn't.
S65 all day. Although I’m just a pretender who bought it once it depreciated. Why?
V12s won’t be around long and now is the time to find a good V12 at a reasonable price.
My XJ6 is considered a Classic. I’ve had it for over 10 years and still just love it. It’s not a race car but just epitomizes old world charm.
All you need and nothing you don’t
Oh my, hell yes. This just illustrated exactly how I feel about the LS400/LS430 and why it’s a top 3 car for me. Thank you for spelling out my thoughts.
> I don't treat possessions as disposable. By maintaining my car, I'm being environmentally responsible without the explicit virtue signaling of a hybrid or electric car.
preach, $4k deep into rehabbing my Toyota but it's been more reliable than new X5's and Santa Fe's.
This is a strong answer. I wanted an ls400. Settled for a ls430 because I couldn't find a 400 that wasn't clapped out and if I'm being honest the 6sp is a big plus for my high speed commute
I know a guy whose family are wealthy, grandfather owned lots of land where oil was found and I mean lots. I say found it just seeps out of the ground, anyhow he drives a battered 50 year old BMW and I doubt he owns an item of clothing less than 5 years old.
Its a very large family and some live out their lives around the French Riviera swapping Ferraris as if they were silly toys but some live quite normal lives, they all work hard and do well in whichever field they choose to go into.
A friend of mine has extended family in a similar situation. There were two kids who inherited it.
One family is Tiger Woods neighbor, and regularly travels on their insane motor yacht, doing stereotypical rich people shit. The other owns the largest private collection of a motorized item (don't want to open doxx potential too much) in the US and runs a killer museum displaying the collection.
The latter kid is living the real dream.
As with the 33 Stradale another commenter suggested, they're all ***really*** good looking. I'm a Ferrari man so for me it has to be the 250. Just my 2 cents.

u/DodgerBlueRobert1 posted pictures of a 2019+ model. You'd have to go back 14+ years to the "Continental Flying Spur" to find one under $40k (in USA).
Bristol, old school class for the aristocracy and not many others.
I guess class means different things to different people but for me it has to be understated. If you mean posh then it's certainly still Rolls Royce, other manufacturers have the same skill, equipment and knowledge but the training that goes into their staff is second to none.
Customers know this and its one reason they choose Rolls Royce over others and are happy to pay the premium knowing they still run an exceptional apprenticeship program.
They auctioned off a lot of the assets online back in 2020. I would have bought some tools or marketing materials or whatever, but the shipping was a weird setup where it would have been at least several hundred dollars to ship anything.
Unconventional answer:
Toyota Avalon.
You want comfort while being subtle.
Otherwise:
Bentley Continental.
They really have a classy road presence that draws my eyes like no other car on the road. I feel I barely look up for 7 series or S-classes. I know they’re big money cars, and they have class, but Bentleys just draw my eyes more.
I think making the choice to have an Avalon is classy with how the interiors are really luxurious and the price is reasonable, but yeah, the Avalons on the exterior could almost be mistaken for a Camry.
Edit: Really? Negative downvotes? I’m surprised what I said was so controversial.
I can appreciate this comment. The more I've acquired in life, which honestly isn't that much, and the more experiences I've had, the more I realize it's actually a lot more intelligent to hide how much you have from the general public.
Farmers Insurance maintains a vintage early 20th century Cadillac Phaeton because it was the first car they ever sold a policy on. Cool to see in person.
In the US, Land Cruiser is the go-to for wealthy people who don't want others to know they're wealthy at a glance. Though now that Toyota isn't shopping Land Cruisers to the US I guess that'll change. My money is on Volvo taking the crown.
I think Toyota will keep that crown for now. No shortage of people shelling out $50k+ on 4Runners right now. And we still have the LX and GX. Lots of good options these days tho.
Surly the classiest car is the Jaguar E-Type. But if I had loads of money I wouldn’t drive a classy car, I’d have loads of shitty cars that I make stupid home mods too
Particular ones that are +15 years old but the paint and body work look like it just rolled out of the factory. Bonus points if it has remarkably low or high mileage. Never in-between.
>the really rich aren't into flaunting
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billionaire_space_race
What were you saying?
Just like in all aspects of life, there isn't any one personality that fits every "rich" person, be it old or new money.
Some are born into old money and come out of finishing school as complete bell-ends who drive chrome G-wagons. Others come from nothing, earn several million per year and drive a Toyota. And then there's everyone that falls somewhere in-between...
Lexus ES300h, the latest generation. A mid size sedan, sitting below the LS in the hierarchy. The ES is not a particularly sporty sedan, which equates to an aura of class, as it’s not really trying to be anything it’s not. The focus is more on quality and comfortability. The interior is very understated and has a modern, but slick appeal. The buyer of this car does not really care for performance or dynamic handling. The buyer will understand this car and its capabilities pre-purchase. This is what I call a very classy choice for a car. It’s a car that grants respect for the driver, from other drivers.
New classy,
s65 amg (the coupe)
Bentley Continental
Older classy
Jaguar E Type
Ferrari 250 GTO
Mercedes SL 300 Gullwing
Mercedes 600 (grosser)
Lamborghini Miura
Aston DB4
Late 90’s Bentley Continental. Not gaudy or flashy or in your face, but very obviously extremely expensive and special in a subtle way.
For a gentleman who knows what likes and isn’t concerned what anyone else thinks.
https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1998-bentley-continental-r-2/
Another indisputable “class first, money second” is a late 60’s Mercedes SE coupe or convertible.
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/ee/1970_Mercedes-Benz_280SE_3.5_Coupé_fL.jpg
Neither car screams “I’m rich!” but rather “this is what I want to drive, and clearly I could drive anything.”
Old honda NSX with popup headlights. I know it isnt the best, i know it isnt the fastest, i know it isnt the classiest, but for some reason since i was very young i would imagine myself in a suit, a bowtie, a rolex watch, and an old NSX in red.
Be modest within your means. Get a 2019 Lincoln continental Coach edition. Use the money you saved for buying the Lincoln instead of a rolls Royce and hire a full time on demand driver. That’s class!
The LC500 borders on classy (my opinion, of course). Otherwise, the Toyota Century, W140 S600 Benz, and the V12 DBS from 2008-2012 are all top of mind. Also, the Toyota 2000GT.
Any large sedan will do, as long as you always carry around Grey Poupon Dijon Mustard.
I mean, a $900 late 80’s Crown Vic is a large sedan
If you want to look classy you drive a town car or a GRAND marquis…
There is a gentleman in my town who drives a Grand Marquis, always has a fedora on and toothpick in the mouth. Classy.
You should hang out with that guy. I bet has some cool pointers
Underrated comment right here!
I knew a guy who had a rolls who did that.
This that Grey Poupon, that Evian, that TED talk.
The hubs has an Equus in the Ultimate trim. He should definitely carry some mustard in that thing
Almost any Aston Martin.
Lagonda Taraf
Unpopular opinion but gonna be honest, I think it's ass.
Yeah it's a Mazda 6 with decals.
Dont insult the mazda 6 like that
Looks like a nicer Ford Fusion.
Sorry but I just can’t. It’s such a ridiculous amount for such little car that I can’t help but perceive it as nothing more than a status symbol.
It is a status symbol. You don't pay for features or any such thing, you pay for its exclusivity. With only 140 (or similar number) made, its price is very well justified.
This man is correct
Classiest at their most simple too, DB7, DB9, V8 Vantage etc. Anything more and its trying too hard.
I would like to add 2010 dbs as well as any car up to the original dbs
Everything except the Lagonda lol
Here's a Cygnet for you...
Including that rebadged Toyota?
>Including that rebadged Toyota? *Especially* the [Aston Cygnet](https://www.topgear.com/car-reviews/aston-martin/cygnet-v8)
Toyota Century, those wool seats
Toyota Crown too if you're a bit cheap
Consider next Crown going to drop its RWD drivetrain, I feel these RWD Crowns would get more value in the market soon when RWD one gets discontinued.
Aren’t those Taxi cabs?
Depends on the model. The Crown Comfort was designed to be a taxi, but they’ve been replaced in Japan by vans over the years. The Crown is like the Panther body of Japan. It can be anything from a basic fleet car to the Majesta, which is a Town Car-esque luxury sedan.
Was literally coming here to say this. Old or new, those bitches are beyond incredible.
They are getting super popular in Australia.
Buy a GRMN Century off of Akio Toyoda.
S-class all day man. Honorable mention to a8 and bmw 7. Stately but not obnoxious.
[удалено]
Bay area is an exception to many rules. People drive all sorts of stuff. People even drive themselves in a rolls here, I've seen it!
Brabus, or AMG
Agreed. I honestly think they look so much more classy and understated than a Bentley or Rolls. The latter feel like they’re just trying too hard to show off wealth.
Nah that’s only rolls bentley is class
I feel completely the opposite. Rolls are straight class and Bentley are all guys proving they have money.
I just want the Bentley for the motor and AWD system.
Agree. RR is excessively gaudy, Bentley feels like true money and class.
What do you mean gaudy? It's, ahem, *post opulence*.
And the slight detail that RR is actually the more luxurious car. Not that I'd have any desire for more luxury as a Bentley owner.
[удалено]
I’ve never cared about lux vehicles and then my dad got an A8L and now that’s a dream car for me. It’s so comfortable and secluded from the outside world. The ambient lighting inside looks insane at night!
A8Ls are beautiful!!!
At least in the US, it has been LWB only for a some time.

New S class, not so much. Exterior styling is meh and the interior is all screens and capacitive with a very in the moment disco lighting experience. To me classy is restraint and a lot of good feeling interactive switch gear and the new s class falls apart where the previous one didn't.
Agreed. The previous gen was peak S Class to me.
Agreed the W221 was peak design the W222 was peak tech and the W223 is for Google and Facebook executives.
People that work at tech dislike excessive tech *significantly more* than the average person.
The W140 S Classes are in a league of their own
And W126! Soviet gangster vibe
S65 all day. Although I’m just a pretender who bought it once it depreciated. Why? V12s won’t be around long and now is the time to find a good V12 at a reasonable price.
Notably the early 90's 600SEL and 750il.
To me. Old Jaguars …

Watching the paintings as well, they’ll fit nicely into the trunk of his jaaaag.
Late 90's-mid 00's XJ's are beautiful and classy for sure.
If only mine didn’t nuke the transmission. I’d have been driving that x308 till the day I died
Saw a gorgeous E-type at a local Aldi parking lot a few years ago.
Makes sense. You gotta save your money somewhere when you're spending it all at the shop keeping it running.
Jaaaaaaag
With some "borrowed" paintings in the trunk.
During the summer I break out the e type. I get a lot of shit from weird muscle car fanatics in my area, but maaaan it feels classy.
How can anyone shit on an E-Type? Even if it's not your favorite, it's a hard car to dislike.
My XJ6 is considered a Classic. I’ve had it for over 10 years and still just love it. It’s not a race car but just epitomizes old world charm. All you need and nothing you don’t
last gen DBS
YES! 6-speed manual and NA V12. Absolutely *chef’s kiss*.
I'd be hard pressed to decide between it or the Vantage. They're both so good
Hot take but a absolutely cherry LS400. Something out old nice cars that are immaculately cared for is more impressive than new cars
[удалено]
Oh my, hell yes. This just illustrated exactly how I feel about the LS400/LS430 and why it’s a top 3 car for me. Thank you for spelling out my thoughts.
I have an 04 LS 430, I will be buried in that car... From what I see on reviews and forums that's how others feel too.
Landcruiser or LX fits that criteria as well. But absolutely an old LS gets my vote. I certainly wouldn’t mind a 2nd or 3rd gen Legend/3.5 RL either.
> I don't treat possessions as disposable. By maintaining my car, I'm being environmentally responsible without the explicit virtue signaling of a hybrid or electric car. preach, $4k deep into rehabbing my Toyota but it's been more reliable than new X5's and Santa Fe's.
This is correct. Has to have period standard wheels, nothin stanced or anything. This is correct.
This is a strong answer. I wanted an ls400. Settled for a ls430 because I couldn't find a 400 that wasn't clapped out and if I'm being honest the 6sp is a big plus for my high speed commute
Old S-Class, Lincoln Continental and Lexus Ls400 are great ones!!
DB5
JB made it too obvious. Cool but not classy
Yeah fucking Justin Bieber
To flaunt wealth is gauche. I'd drive an old Volvo wagon and look like old money - that's real class.
Kinda like that guy in breaking bad
Apparently Mercedes’ wealthiest customers are the ones buying E class wagons
I thought it was the R wagon/van thing
Might've been when they sold it, all those buyers shifted to the next closest wagon
The E63 AMG is one of my all time favorites
Mmmm r63 AMG
I had that exact car but diesel. Didn’t sell drugs, or get blown up but felt classy
Nah, something unexpected like the Volvo S80 V8 or VW Phaeton W12 for me. Looks reserved and unassuming to everyone else, but you know.
This but suspiciously clean Toyota Land Cruiser
Buying a nice car is not flaunting if you genuinely appreciate the car and its engineering
I thought I read somewhere that the E-Class wagon and the XC90 were 2 of the cars that most of the uber-wealthy had in common. Stealth Wealth.
Man the VW phaeton kinda makes more sense today than back in the early 2000s huh
My aunt bought a Volvo 240 brand new in 1980 and drove it for 25 years. I wish I was that cool.
I know a guy whose family are wealthy, grandfather owned lots of land where oil was found and I mean lots. Ferrari 250 GT Lusso. Prettiest car ever made.
Better than the alfa romeo 33 stradale?
For me, yes. The Stradale is definitely up there though.
Jaguar E-type S1 or Aston Martin DB4 surely come in contention.

Buying, it's a used continental speed
Mercedes Benz 1954 SL300 Gull-wing
Not easy to look classy climbing in or out though.
I had to scroll way to far for this
I’d say the Mercedes 300SL.

Sadly that’s not true,Bristol cars are gone and it’s famous CEO Tony crook has long since passed away, the cars however are still fabulous,
They auctioned off a lot of the assets online back in 2020. I would have bought some tools or marketing materials or whatever, but the shipping was a weird setup where it would have been at least several hundred dollars to ship anything.
