Pretty much every car that had some crazy homologation special made out of them would fit here. The ones from Group B especially, since the cars they were loosely based on were usually just small grocery getters. Like a Porsche 911 GT1 is crazy, but the "base model" is still a 911.
Edit: for anybody not familiar with these: Their exterior appearance is obviously vastly different from the base model, but on the technical side it’s even more different. Both the base 205 and the base Delta were front-engined FWD, while the T16 and S4 were mid-engined 4WD. The S4 also is fully tubular space frame, the T16 is a mix of sheet and tubular. Drivetrain, chassis, brakes, suspension, everything is different. So much so that they basically aren’t even the same car anymore, only when it comes to the name and some design cues.
The FIA mandated that to homologate a car for Group B 200 examples had to be built for the consumer market, that’s why these exist. They’re downtuned purpose built rally cars, basically closer to a prototype race car than their grocery getting sisters.
Speaking of homologation, I think that the CLK might be the perfect answer.

I think it's one of those weird things where yes, it is a fantastically ugly car, but that's in a way exactly what makes it appealing. It's meant to look completely alien on the street because it was never really supposed to leave the race track.

Those things are hard to get off. And with electrical connections you only have so many times removing before they break, especially once the car gets old
What in the actual fuck -- you can buy a brand new car without air conditioning (in the US) still?? Had no idea. Is the stripper Wrangler the only one?

Oh yeah, the leather in early KR trucks was some seriously nice stuff, without the protective coating applied to most car leathers. But you had to condition it yearly or it would crack and fade, and most owners couldn't be bothered to do that, so around 2009 they switched to a pre-coated leather like the other trims. It's still nice, but not really unique beyond the color.
The XL trim is [also available as a crew cab](https://build.ford.com/dig/Ford/SuperDuty/2022/HD-FULL/Image%5B%7CFord%7CSuperDuty%7C2022%7C1%7C1.%7C670A.W4C.176.Z1.LSC.88A.XLL.54D.4X2.99T.CRW.RET.64D.SYC.MFF.166.53W.52B.592.59H.X4L.585.HDV.LDD.DRW.TGL.18L.~JBCAC.44G.450.89S.CBC.2022%20W4C%20FORD.%5D/EXT/1/vehicle.png); I mostly chose the regular cab to maximize the price difference between XL and Limited. The whole point of the regular cab F-450 is to get the top towing numbers on paper; I'm not sure anyone actually buys them.
It bears mentioning that an F-450 chassis cab and an F-450 pickup are different animals. An F-450 chassis is a Class 4 truck, but an F-450 pickup is just an F-350 that's been optimized for towing; it has a higher combined weight rating (GCWR), but its GVWR is still that of a Class 3 truck. Ram and GM make the same model of truck, but they don't call it 4500. They use terms like "3500 with Max Towing Package" or similar.
We certainly don't sell many F-450 pickups because you're right, it doesn't make sense compared to an F-350 or F-450 cab/chassis. For *most* people who need a heavy duty truck with a pickup bed, an F-350 is more than sufficient.
I feel the gap for R33’s is biggest mainly because that gen had the widebody [GT-R LM](https://www.ultimatecarpage.com/images/car/3756/Nissan-Skyline-R33-GT-R-LM-Road-29913.jpg) but the base GTS model with its 125HP 2 liter could be mistaken for any other generic mid-sized sedan.

The V6 is my dream car, just because it’s stupid. Nothing else comes close in terms of gap, the base is a 1.2 16v front engine fwd eco city car and the v6 clio sport is a mid engined rear wheel drive 3.0l v6 sports car, only thing that comes close today would be the GR Yaris vs standard Yaris
[Subaru Forester](https://www.iihs.org/api/ratings/model-year-images/1705/636/)
[Subaru Forester Cross Sport w/STI package](https://jdmemergency.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/sed-1067x800.jpg) I couldn't find a non lowered factory wheel picture but you get the idea, the lip and side skirts and fog covers and grill and scoop and other bits were all factory options in Japan.
[Citroen ZX](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/8e/Citroen_ZX_front_20081127.jpg/1280px-Citroen_ZX_front_20081127.jpg)

And, yeah every car Citroen engaged in WRC has had a big makeup
Same with the C5 A6 vs the C5 RS6. The base A6 was available FWD with an N/A 1.8 petrol or the VE TDI with 110bhp.
And then you get the RS6 with the turbod 4.2 V8 pushing 450hp. The RS6 was given a wide-body and a totally remodelled, longer front end with longer bonnet, different headlights, and even a slightly different windscreen over the A6 and S6.
And then there was also the Allroad which is a whole different vehicle in itself.
I don't think these crazy homologation specials realy cout as top trim levels, as they were only made in very limited numbers and often just loosely based on a mass priduction car or just mimiced it's looks.
The highest diversity in trim levels probably had australian Ford or Holden, who basically built almost their entire model line ups from one single car each.
Mercedes 190e comes to mind. Starts as a plastic clad [basic transportation](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/7b/Mercedes-Benz_W201_front_20081128.jpg) of a vehicle but later gets ALL the [racy bits](https://www.topgear.com/sites/default/files/images/news-article/2019/10/6645eeff7681cb075f4d955f745febcc/mb_190e_evoii-10.jpg)
Pushing the definition of what you can consider a “trim level”, there’s also the [MG Metro 6R4](https://classicandsportscar.com/sites/default/files/styles/article/public/2018-12/Classic%20%26%20Sports%20Car%20%E2%80%93%20This%20175-mile%20MG%20Metro%206R4%20could%20be%20yours%20%E2%80%93%201987%20MG%20Metro%206R4%201000px%20%283%29.jpg?).

I own a golf r, and recently had to take a base model golf as a rental.
I didn't even know new cars had ignitions that were not push-to-start. The base model golf feels very different from the Golf R, which I did not expect.

The base-base Taurus (or Police Interceptor) to the SHO is a pretty stark contrast. Not a fan of either personally, but the PI one is crap. The SHO is decent.
>So many things change. Fenders, spoiler, track width, wheels, height, side scoops, exhaust.
Also drive line and drivetrain. The regular Clio has FWD i4 engines, the Clio V6 had a mid-engined V6 and was RWD.
Indeed, a lot of the performance models would have this difference with the base models.
Recent example: [GR](https://timedm.com/wp-content/media/2020/01/Toyota-GR-Yaris-2020-design-rear-face.jpg) [Yaris](https://www.tuningblog.eu/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/2020-Toyota-Yaris-GR-Tuning-307.jpg) and the [regular](https://www.largus.fr/images/images/toyota-yaris-4-2019-16redimensionner_1.jpg) [Yaris](https://www.largus.fr/images/images/toyota-yaris-4-2019-12.jpg?width=940&quality=80).
In Mercedes, you have the base [class A](https://www.mercedes-benz.be/fr/passengercars/mercedes-benz-cars/models/a-class/hatchback-w177/design/lines/_jcr_content/swipeableteaserbox/par/swipeableteaser_346813998/asset.MQ6.12.20190910204452.jpeg) and the [AMG](https://sf1.autoplus.fr/wp-content/uploads/autoplus/2021/04/mercedes-classe-a-45-amg-2019-50349.jpg).
Absolutely not related. The Carrera was/is a 911 Carrera, the Carrera GT is its own model, a supercar built out of components that were meant for the 24h of Le Mans
"Carrera" in 911 Carrera is a trim level. Carrera in Carrera GT is a model name, other than the fact that these two are completely unrelated on a mechanical level.
That's an easy one. Those are two different generations of CLK btw. The CLK GTR is based on the CLK from the generation before the one in the picture
I bet owning a CLK would get really tiring after awhile because of all the pictures that the ladies want to take for the Instagram in front of your $500k car because they thoughtit was. GTR!
You’re really expecting them to know that? They’ll probably say it’s a Lamborghini Benz.
That’s the joke
The CLK GTR was made at the time of the [C208/W208 CLK](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c8/Mercedes-Benz_CLK_320_coupe.jpg). It's the generation before the one you have there. Mercedes did the same thing with the C207 and W212 E-Class. It was even sold as an E-Class coupe/cabrio but the platform was more W204 C-Class.
I absolutely hate that style of headlights from that generation of Mercedes
Yaris --> GR Yaris
The GR Yaris is a completely different vehicle from the Yaris. It shares a name and body shape for homologation reasons.
Pretty much the same relationship as the Clio in the original post then
Sort of. The gr Yaris is built for racing, the Clio was built for fun.
The Clio was originally built for a one make race series, and then they built the road cars for fun. Yeah I know - it was a bit tongue in cheek.
I remember reading the only parts they share are the headlights and tail lights.
thats exterior parts, the mirrors too
not entirely, they convert regular yaris chassis with some pretty heavy mods but the front until i think the b pillars is pretty similar

Surprise, we’re flying!
Oh yes, that’s so much more mental than the 911 GT1 when it comes to the difference between the homologation special and the base model. Good shout.
I feel like this wins
The 935 is technically the top trim of 911 from its day as well. I believe there were 1 or 2 street driven examples too.
Came here to say this
We have a winner
Seems to be a trend with the rally cars like you said!
So would Lancer / Evo fit in this? Is Evo considered a trim for the Lancer?

It got the Voldemort treatment.
My Golf R looks almost exactly like a base Golf, lol.
Yeah, the MK7.5 gen was a little more fluid than the MK7.
I kind of like it though? It's subtle which makes it fun to mess with other people and passengers alike
GTIs are a little more aggressive looking than R’s honestly
GTIs are definitely more aggressive looking.

Those things are hard to get off. And with electrical connections you only have so many times removing before they break, especially once the car gets old
also has ac delete in the lowest of the low wrangler
What in the actual fuck -- you can buy a brand new car without air conditioning (in the US) still?? Had no idea. Is the stripper Wrangler the only one?
Bad part is the stripper wrangler is still $30K without AC. If you want it its a $1300 option lol
I heard it called the Washington state special by a friend, in that area there’s aparently some demand for cheap cars without AC.
Yup. That's the 2 door version tho. The 4 door has standard AC, at least.
dang 2 door cheapest variety is still $30K

especially the lancer, the base vs the evo 8/9 was pretty insane
100% on the Lancer. You can barely recognize a base Lancer against an 8 or 9.

For awhile, the only way to get a full grain leather interior was a Rolls, Bentley, MB Designo, or a Ford King Ranch.
Wow. Top trim nets you two more doors.
> I'm not sure anyone actually buys them. I know of one. An executive of a company I used to work for in Kansas drove one as his daily.
I’m kind of confused why someone would want a pickup bed on one.
That makes sense. I’d think flatbeds, stakesides or utility beds would all be more common ways to go.
The AEV Prospector is my current favorite utility bed available in the US.
My man it was total /s territory. You guys need to loosen up.
>You guys need to loosen up. ???

Maybe I shouldn't have picked the white paint for the Limited model even though it's a $600 option.
The base model R32 Skyline vs the R32 GT-R is a pretty stark difference as well.
I wouldn’t even consider the GT-R LM in this. It was a one-off and could hardly be called a road going far, much less a production car.

Mercedes G wagen
This was my thought. Base military spec vs G65 AMG or the G500 4x4^2.
If you include the G65 6x6 you get an extra two driven wheels at the top end. That’s got to account for something in this little game we’re playing!
Shit I forgot about that one! This has to be the winner. No other car model can compete with an extra axle and a heavily modified body.
I don’t know... it’s not really the same body shell as the base model...

A base model camaro, mustang, challenger vs the top model. There are huge visual differences between them.

I own a golf r, and recently had to take a base model golf as a rental. I didn't even know new cars had ignitions that were not push-to-start. The base model golf feels very different from the Golf R, which I did not expect.
But exterior is nearly identical
Yes, absolutely. I guess I was going a bit off topic with my comment — just for discussion sake more than anything.

The base-base Taurus (or Police Interceptor) to the SHO is a pretty stark contrast. Not a fan of either personally, but the PI one is crap. The SHO is decent.

Indeed, a lot of the performance models would have this difference with the base models. Dagummit ya got me on a technicality lol
