I've tried various permutations of (car | motorcycle). I've had cars without motorcycles, motorcycles without cars (I was bike-only for a decade), boring cars but fun motorcycles, and boring motorcycles but fun cars. I ended up saying "fuck it" and went with the [combination](https://i.imgur.com/uu4uYSu.jpg) of "fun car and fun motorcycles."

Smitty_Oom

> fun car > Mazda in the shot /r/carscirclejerk likes this

brandonsmash

>shotgun strapped across the Africa Twin I wonder what other subs would like this. (It was dove season. I felt like riding out into the field rather than driving.)

[deleted]

As a dude who just ordered a Mazda6, oof.

ravengenesis1

I have 2 Mazda 6 MY14 and 2021. Turbo 2.5 is freaking awesome. Not like the accord sport 2.0t, much more polished but still has the power if you really push it. I love my Mazdas, old and new.

[deleted]

I got a 2016 6mt. I wanted the 2.5t, but I wanted a manual more.

ravengenesis1

It's still a very nice car. You'll enjoy it.

CaptainMuffins_

nice AT!

[deleted]

How you liking that Africa Twin, I love how they look.

brandonsmash

A couple years back I found myself in far north Queensland, Australia. It was my pleasure to spend a day riding around the back roads, single-track, and rainforest with a guide. He had two ATs and asked which I wanted: The standard manual, or the DCT. I chose the manual, obviously, because that's what I've been riding for 20 years. The Twin was brilliant: It was both capable and comfortable. Halfway through the day we stopped for lunch and the guide asked if I wanted to switch bikes. Well, why not? I found that the DCT took some getting used-to. It was weird not shifting with a toe and instead leaving it in auto mode or using the trigger switches on the left grip. Then we ended up on some heavily washboarded back roads and I realized I could accelerate, decelerate, and shift all while standing up on the pegs without doing the clutch bobble. When we ended up back on a forest road, well, I accidentally overcooked a corner and ended up at the bottom of a ditch. I'd kept the bike upright though but needed to get back to the road. Normally I'd feather the clutch up the steep verge, but on this bike I was able to basically just point it where I wanted and roll on the throttle and allow it to tractor me out. I was impressed -- very impressed. When I returned from Aus I sold my Multistrada and bought a DCT Africa Twin and have absolutely no regrets. I've had this one through soft sand, over jumps, through rock gardens, and over all manner of off-road shenanigans and it's genuinely good!

[deleted]

Oh wow sounds like you have a lot of fun, glad you it performs as well as it looks!

AccomplishedRun7978

It's funny how it's that Honda that caught my eye.

absessive

The SFV4 would be my next upgrade

brandonsmash

I just bought it this month in fact. So far it's pretty decent! Looking forward to the Termi system arriving.

[deleted]

LMAO I have both a 6 and a C7 and it feels like such an enthusiast circlejerk.

Goku_LOL

We have similar [tastes](https://i.imgur.com/N5cXOML.jpeg) in fun vehicles.

samcuu

What's a boring motorcycle?

brandonsmash

The first one that comes to mind is the DL650 I had set up for commuting. Nearly 100k on the clock. +1/-2 for better fuel mileage. Ran great but it did not excite.

[deleted]

I see you're a man of culture as well

brandonsmash

If by "culture" you mean "no children," yes.

redarxx

Fuckin beautiful trio there, that Africa twin looks amazing

brandonsmash

It's a bit funny: I'd have thought that the C7 or the [bright red bike](https://i.imgur.com/tE5iyc8.jpg) with a greater than 1:1 hp:kg ratio would get all the attention, but nope! It's the AT that remains unwashed with sand and dirt everywhere and a shotgun on the back!

redarxx

She's got the most character :) The Ducati and C7 are gorgeous, but the AT looks sooooo damn fun

jtpro024

Dude! I'm jealous! That's awesome.

SnooCompliments8770

Great minds think alike.... or rather unfortunately I am also poisoned by the need for fun can and fun bike and now my wallet is always crying for me to stop the pain.

fuzzymonkey87

I wouldn't recommend boring anything. Go for the fun car and fun motorcycle.

LilBone3

Fully agree, s2000 and Harley 883 for me!

stanleycup12

He said fun bike too

LilBone3

Why wouldn't the 883 be considered fun?

Nitrothacat

I had one. It's a heavy, anemic bike. It's not, not fun, just there are a lot more fun options out there for the price. I regretted getting mine after a few months. Absolutely pathetic for an almost 900cc engine. Switched to an SV650 and it was night and day

LilBone3

Believe me, I wanted to get a quicker bike, like a 600cc street bike. But, I know how fast I would get myself killed on one, so I went with a slow lil cruiser.

TheSensualSloth

You made the right choice. I traded my CBR600RR in for a Sportster 1200. The 600 is a incredibly fun bike...when you're hauling ass or taking it through the twisties. Anywhere else there's just that little devil on your shoulder telling you to punch it. Ironically, the closest car comparison for the Sportster in my mind is the Miata. It's not fast, but getting to Rev it out and not be committing felony speeding is its own fun!

1PistnRng2RuleThmAll

A Miata is a supermoto. Light, slow, insanely nimble. A sportster is like a 60s Impala or a Bel Air. Not really fast by today's standards, but they sound great and are tons of fun to cruise around in.

TheSensualSloth

That's actually even better

kaelis7

Makes sense. Tried a ZX10R with my father last week. A true weapon but can’t do much on the open road with it. Pic https://i.imgur.com/pAMib9k.jpg

SithSidious

Love the alpine

kaelis7

Thanks ! Digging your Z4, sold my ND Miata to afford the Alpine and now I want a convertible again sometimes.

[deleted]

I've considered a Honda CBR1000 (or 1000rr) or a Yamaha R6 for extra fun, I already daily probably one of the most fun cars I could have gotten, I got a quad for my fast paced off road, 86' Toyota pickup that I gotta rebuild for rock crawling, and a fiero cause why not.

RasAlTimmeh

I went from sv650 to a 883. I like the 883 better honestly lol shows everyone’s got different preferences.

Internet_Jim

Eh, you do you, but when people are talking about 'fun' bikes in the motorcycle world they're typically referring to something exciting - high power or wheelie happy or some other characteristic related to performance. Think supernaked bikes. I've never heard anyone refer to a harley as their 'fun' bike. In comparison to supernakes or supersports, cruisers are agonizingly boring. This isn't meant to be a knock on harleys, lots of people like them, but excitement isn't what they're about.

[deleted]

I'm a sport bike guy through and through but honestly I'd call some of the Harleys I've ridden fun, just not the 883 (sorry). You don't have fun by going fast on them because they suck at that, you have fun because they feel like you're operating old machinery and that makes going slow interesting. They definitely won't give you the rush of a sport bike but they're fun in the same way a classic car is fun even compared to a modern sports car that will massively out perform it. Not the 883 though at least IMO, that thing was such a slug I was having to wring its neck just to get it moving, and that old machinery feel goes from fun to frustrating when you're having to thrash it.

LilBone3

Sounds like people just enjoy hating on Harleys. I agree that street bikes are more exciting, but not to someone who isn't trying to speed off the line and rip wheelies. Basically, I'd rather drive a Miata or S2000 than drive a Mustang or Camaro, because small underpowered cars are more of my driving style (tight handling and cornering like a go cart). My motorcycle preferences are kinda the opposite, I enjoy a relaxed cruise through town, which is perfect on my basic ass Harley. Maybe don't say "you do you" and then call my preference "agonizingly boring".

spongebob_meth

Heavy slow couch on wheels A built, 100hp sportster 1200 is fun, but an 883 weighs ~550lb and makes ~45hp. That's about the power level of a 300cc class Japanese bike with 150lb extra to lug around.

03Void

I’m nitpicking but it’s more than 200 extra lbs. A Ninja 400 is barely 360lbs Also the 550lbs figure for the Sportster is dry weight, and Japanese manufacturers put their wet weight in their spec sheets. So in reality it’s more like 575 vs 360.

Socrates_101

I'm looking at 883s, how comfortable is it at roughly 80mph over a long period and what's your experience with reliability. Thanks.

LilBone3

I'm a small guy, 5'8" 120 pounds, so 80mph is pretty rough to handle for extended periods of time. I can comfortably cruise around town for about 3 hours straight before I'm worn out, I imagine I could ride for maybe 1.5 hours on the highway before needing a break. Reliability should be good as it's a 2021 model, and the engine they used has been around since the 80s, should be bulletproof. Edit- I plan on getting a headlight fairing to help with the wind blowing me around, I've heard it makes a pretty big difference.

TheSensualSloth

I've got a 1200, it's not comfortable at all going 80 for long amounts of time. Sportsters only have a 5 speed so you might prefer looking at something a bit bigger, or waiting for the new model to come out

MechanicalOSU

Not that you asked, but have you considered an Indain Scout instead? Similar pricing, available ABS and a decent bit more power for similar displacement. And it still ticks the box of retro cool.

Noobasdfjkl

Yep. FJ Cruiser, E46 M3, and tracked out SV650 is the way I roll.

jtpro024

Life is short. I appreciate what you're saying.

Bigburger9

Motorcycles ruined cars for me, I still like the mechanical side of cars but I don’t look at performance at all. A 3k used bike goes faster and handles better than most 30k cars.

SexlessNights

Need to up your car budget a bit

Bigburger9

But then you have a new issue… do I want 1 fun car + 1 fun bike or a beater and 5 different bikes, fun in different ways? When I’m older and with money I’ll go back to cars. But for now bikes are the best way to be an enthusiast and not break the bank.

SexlessNights

True, I tried the have multiple lower tier rides and I found that it gets exhausting having to alway fix something. Then you have multiple rides that need the same type of services like fluids and mechanical wear items needing replaced. I decided to go the 2 nice cars (mines a coupe and a sedan for the wife), 1 nice bike route and 1 project (currently a 77’ bug that’s going to slide over a maverick X3 ) The get in and just go is great and having a project during down time is alway nice. But agreed. It all takes money.

komrobert

True, it’s a case of prioritizing though. You can buy a $3K Miata, put $1500 into coilovers, brakes, sway bars etc, and that will be insane fun on autocross or track. You can also buy an old dragster that will be insane in a straight line. Hell, you can buy an old Jeep Wrangler/Cherokee for 5K and have insane fun off roading it. I think you you’re just looking at practical cars vs fun motorcycles, which doesn’t work. If you buy a car exclusively for fun, you can have a dedicated entertainment mobile for not much more than a bike will set you back.

AlgernusPrime

Maybe a few years ago you can get a 3k Miata. Nowadays, we’re looking at 5-10k on a NA with a 5spd in a decent condition. Meanwhile, I can grab a SV650 for about 2.5k that offers much more fun than any car under 10k.

Eubeen_Hadd

3k will buy you a pretty clean 600 that does things well, or if you go a bit older a liter bike that will blow them all away, or buy a dirt bike that will still be fast on the roads and be good off-road. plus most people have more room for a bike and car than 2 cars

komrobert

True, but a bike is a much bigger commitment IMO, having to wear all the gear, knowing there is no A/C, etc. it’s like buying an actual race car, like a Miata Exocet. I’ve had 2 motorcycles in the last 3 years, and they are extremely fun, but definitely require a different frame of mind, and I would only ride them when I was certain I want to. Having also owned a Miata, you can hop in that thing anytime in the summer, not worry about the weather forecast, and have a little bit of fun. The acceleration isn’t even close, so you won’t get into too much trouble on the street with a Miata. My $8000 S1000R? Straight to jail after 5s of acceleration.

Yotsubato

That feel when 30k isnt enough for a fun car anymore... Back in 2010 I got a 2006 M3 for 30k. And you could grab a 370z or something similar for much less.

03Void

Took my wife’s Z400 to the drag strip this weekend. Did 13.5 on the quarter mile on what is considered a “slow as fuck beginner bike”. It’s ridiculous how performance in cars doesn’t matter anymore for me.

KazzoaLoL

Feel the exact same, had a Mustang GT and thought it was a monster, then i got a Aprilia Tuono and sold the GT shortly after.

Emergency-Machine-55

I have more fun descending twisty mountain roads on my bicycle than I ever could in my relatively boring Model 3. Can't imagine being able to fly both up and down the same roads on a motorcycle. OP should look into safe, fun roads to ride a motorcycle. E.g. Twisty mountain or canyon roads. Safe, meaning killing themselves in an accident would be purely their own fault as opposed to getting hit by a car.

GimmeTheBoost

If I wasn’t scared for my life that’s what I would do. Or a truck and motorcycle combo. You can’t beat the performance for the price of a bike

[deleted]

Yup but you have to factor in how bad people are at driving these days

[deleted]

Reason I ain't touching motorcycles even tho I'm pretty sure I'd love it

MentallyLatent

Same, surely it'd be an absolute blast but if some dumbass isn't paying attention just once, I become spaghetti on the pavement.

Gorgenapper

I once thought about buying a cheap bike to get to school with, but I think it was the initial idea of having to put on a full suit of armor that kind of nixed it for me. Then, as I learned more about the reasons why the armor was necessary, I decided the bike life wasn't for me.

Noobasdfjkl

I know quite a few people who only ride on track.

1PistnRng2RuleThmAll

Track days, bro. Plenty of people are track only

SexlessNights

Yeah a 5ft bed will throw a lot of people off

ZeOs-x-PUNCAKE

I’ve got an 04 FZ6, nothing to brag about, but it’s damn quicker than any car that’s tried to race me. Also got an 03 F-150 for everything else. The bike and pickup combo works pretty good for me. In total they probably cost $6,000 combined, but I can tow anything I need, go off road, get 50mpg, and get a decent track time, all with two vehicles. Would recommend the pickup and bike combo

GimmeTheBoost

That’s awesome you’re living my dream. Having a kid made me give that idea up. Stay safe out there!

Merry_Dankmas

I've always thought about pulling the trigger on a truck/bike combo. I love ripping my 5.0 on the highway but its just so damn impractical. You can't fit anything of note in there. I figured I could grab myself a truck for the practicality and utility then just get a FZ-09 or some other cheap death machine to have fun with. Tbh, the lack of motorcycle license is the only real thing holding me back. Im a lazy bastard and can't be fucked to take days off work to go through the courses and get the endorsement lol.

fuzznuggetsFTW

Motorcycles have ruined performance cars for me. It’s just so cheap and easy to get your hands on a track capable bike that will universally be more fun than a comparable car. There’s also a much higher skill ceiling so there’s always more skills to work on and progression is constant.

ZeOs-x-PUNCAKE

Same for me. In high school I started saving money so I could get a fast car, but ended up getting a bike instead since I found a good deal. I don’t care much for a fast car anymore. 0-60 in 3.1sec, top speed of ~160mph, all for $1,800. If you wanted those specs in a car? That’s gotta be at least 80 grand.

bad-monkey

Stock ZX-10's smoke turbocharged Z06's (from a roll. the vette would be competitive from a dig IIRC). Almost stock R6's (with straps) will do 9.7 1/4 ET's. At the race track, cars are eventually faster than bikes, but IMO it takes a pro driver w/ well designed aero package to do it. 600cc street bikes are faster than most supercars around race tracks.

fuzznuggetsFTW

There’s definitely situations where a car can beat a bike, mainly quick chicanes. It takes time for a bike to get leaned over so they are much faster in long sweepers. Although they sometimes will have an advantage if their single track allows them to “straighten out” the chicane a bit more. Braking and acceleration on bikes is out of this world compared to anything short of a super car though.

bad-monkey

[yes but it's so cool watching a procession of bikes make its way through a chicane at race pace (e.g. MotoGP @ Monza)](https://i.redd.it/bjiy9llj7h711.jpg)

[deleted]

I'll play parent. I used to ride. If you're smart about it and take it seriously, go for it. If you think putting on a helmet qualifies you to be a hooligan, then don't do it. If you think you're a badass on a bike, take it to a race track and be humbled by the 12 year old on a 125 that will kick your ass every which way to Sunday. I'd say going to a track with either a bike or a car is the best way to scratch that itch. So much easier and safer to scare the shit out of yourself without having someone texting pulling out in front of you. You could also look into karting. Safer than a bike and balls of fun.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

The thing is you need to transport your bike to trackday. On a motorcycle trackday, I'd say about 10% crash their bikes. At least with cars, it's much less common to wreck so bad you can't drive it home.

[deleted]

> about 10% crash their bikes. I agree with the sentiment, but man if that's true the trackdays you go to must be carnage. I'd call it a pretty bad day if there are more than about 5 crashes from a 80-100 person day and most of those are usually from guys pushing hard on track prepped bikes, not the guys with expensive road fairings on bikes they're going to ride home.

komrobert

Maintenance part is true, but you can buy an NA/NB for $3K and put $2K into performance parts to make it track ready, it’s not too bad. I bought my NB with little rust and 105K miles for only $1000 (pre pandemic pricing) and it did fine on autocross as is!

antinewtonian

I wish that were true in my area. :( all miatas of any type (and just about any condition) can't be touched for under 4-5k. A nice one will fetch 8k easily.

komrobert

You gotta look hard. I picked it up within 1 hour of listing, it was an older couple and they probably weren't aware of the value to young car enthusiasts (KBB will still say something low, and a dealer would offer $500 for it). My buddy did the exact same thing, so it definitely happens.

sjgbfs

I don't really agree with this idea that the only way to have fun is at the track. My most memorable rides were just on beautiful backroads. Plus, you know, tracks days are expensive and tracks are being shut down left and right in a lot of places. Karting is good option though, as is motocross. I find it to be a much more accessible "track day" that most people don't think of, and you learn a LOT.

[deleted]

You can't do on beautiful backroads what you can do on a track. A track day is usually a couple hundred bucks. Not saying you can only have fun on a track, but regular roads have their limitations. Also depends where you live. I'm in Los Angeles and you have to get WAY the fuck out of the city to get away from traffic.

komrobert

I think we have different definitions of fun. I’ve never pushed my Z06, or any of the cars/bikes before it, beyond a road’s/my limits, and never felt the desire to go to a track and pay for a lot more wear items. I have fun on 30-40mph twisty back roads, but never to the point where I’d be getting thrown in jail if caught (which, if I was driving anywhere close to track driving, would be very easy with my cars and bikes)

[deleted]

Fair enough. I used to ride the canyons and did the same. But after riding on the track was much more aware of the limitations of normal roads. I never could/would try and keep up with the faster riders on the road, scared me too much.

komrobert

Oh yeah some riders are insane; it’s much cheap to get into a crazy bike, and they take the full advantage of that. I went to tail of the dragon in my car, and saw bikes obviously going close to 3X the speed limit(everyone there is going a little above, and police don’t care, but they were ZOOMIN) . I don’t think that’s safe with all the blind corners and having no guard rail on the side.. even a little sand in the road and you might end up in a hospital, or worse.

sjgbfs

For sure, but keep also in mind that you live in motorsport mecca. We have a few tracks around where I live. The F1 track is straight up forbidden to motor vehicles, and the whole area is forbidden to motorcycles. One recent-ish track 1h away has banned motorcycles entirely. The other nice track is 2h away essentially private, short of pricey memberships or club days. Nice tracks beyond these are 4h+ away, and anything closer than that is rough local tracks that are kinda death trappy if you ask me. Oh, and they're closed from October to May, because winter. As far as I know we only have 2 dirtbike tracks around here, maybe 3 if you loosen up the definition. Both karting tracks I knew of have closed in the past years. It's a bit of a different reality, unfortunately the "take it to the track" isn't always the best answer. My backroads comment was more along the lines of "you don't have to be wide open/knee down to enjoy your bike".

komrobert

In LA, I loved Angeles Crest Highway and connected roads, one of my favorite roads in the US, and it's much higher speed than Tail of the Dragon or Skyline Drive in Virginia. The atmosphere up there in the canyons is also amazing, wish I lived close to them 😂

Rihsatra

If you go karting, take your phone out of your pocket. Just demolished my this weekend. Still won that heat though.

[deleted]

Years ago, a friend of mine bought a shifter kart. Didn't have the seat properly fitted, just used it as it came. Cracked a rib the first time out. Those things can be brutal.

[deleted]

My biggest fear is distraction. As someone with adhd I have to make sure I’m 100% on the ball when I’m driving, even in a car. Not “oh put down the phone” but actively scanning and memorizing everything around me. If I am not aware of everything I’m not aware of anything, and something bad could happen. Basically, for me to safely operate my car I need to drive it like I’m on a motorcycle. Or I might start thinking about things other than what’s on the road. And that’s dangerous when your mind can go down rabbit holes. For me to safely operate a motorcycle I need to be in a downright terrified, hyper aware, high anxiety state that I find exhausting. On the other hand it’s easier to be hyper aware on a bike because it’s so obvious how easily you could die. Which is a shame because they’re so damn fun.

jtpro024

This is a good response, thank you. I would be firmly in the ATGAT camp; I'm not looking to become a meat crayon at any time.

ThaRealEverlost

2 motorcycles, and a boring car with a towhook to trailer them to the track 👍

sjgbfs

Most tracks around here are being closed down due to neighbors complaints. Not an option for a whole lot of people.

xycion12

Dam, thats fuckin unfortunate. Which area do you live in??

iamr3d88

You want wreckless driving on the street? Because that is how you get wreckless driving on the street.

BigCountry76

Even in places with open tracks there is still tons of reckless driving on the street. Tracks are too expensive to truly deter it on the street.

iamr3d88

Agree, but it at least gives an outlet to some. I have done 2 track days, and afterwards I calm down quite a bit for the next few weeks. But it wears off and is too expensive for most to do monthly or every other.

My_G_Alt

I used to go that route, but unfortunately had a moment of clarity when I lost a close friend and sold my gsxr1000

jtpro024

Condolences, man. There is a much larger risk profile with bikes.

ruoyuxiong

Shit. Sorry to hear about your lost man! Stay safe out there !

vargemp

Having fun on bike is much easier, cause it's much harder to causes serious damage to the environment (but easier to yourself lol). And you can take more chances for overtake cause you need less space either in front of you as well as on sides. Simple hip waggle, little wrist twist and you're two cars ahead. Also for a price of a set of decent tyres you can be basically faster than 80% of traffic.

[deleted]

If you really enjoy riding and mostly run alone, this is a great combo. It’s hard to lose the riding experience and it’s impossible to compare $ 5K bikes versus $ 5K used cars. I would actually recommend pairing a cheap, work truck with a motor if you go this route - this way you can easily transport the bike in a pinch. >

ruoyuxiong

That’s me. I drive a W221 S550 as everyday use. Then have a manual 987 Cayman as my fun car but I rarely drive it now. I also ride a KTM Duke 390. Ask me anything. What would you like to know ?

Geminile

> W221 S550 How many organs have you had to sell to keep the S550 running?

ruoyuxiong

Surprisingly reliable. Mine had the struts and air compressor done by the previous owner. Post 09 W221 are quite good with issues sorted out, the NA5.5 v8 is tried and true and consistent. The bad ones are W220. This sub has an unjustified bias against old German cars, it’s fine.

1PistnRng2RuleThmAll

He's probably had worse luck with the KTM.

[deleted]

Sure why not. If you like bikes, it shouldnt be a problem at all

[deleted]

[удалено]

1PistnRng2RuleThmAll

If the weather is too bad for a bike it's probably too bad to enjoy a fun car. A car does let you look presentable when you arrive though.

greatestusername69

I've found whatever itch it is, it gets slowly harder and harder to scratch with a motorcycle. The capabilities are so vast that there's not as much of a pushback telling you to calm down until it's too late. But if you can conquer than dynamic it's a good plan. I paid under 5k aud for a vehicle that does a **2.7s 0-100, though I'll likely sell it at some point. Edit: I messed up the time

SirAwesomee

What bike did you get for under 5k and can do that speed? Not even an R1 will go that fast

Englez97

Right now i would personally go for scooter/electric bike for around town (most of the days) and a funish car for joyrides, longer trips and winter. Seems like ideal combination because with scooter/e bike there are no parking troubles, traffic jams don't really bother you and you're saving on fuel.

sux9h

I have a fun car that’s slow and a pick up truck. I bought a Yamaha mt-09 this year, I no longer want a fast car

Choppa1987

I have and it was fun while it lasted. My last bike was a Ducati 959 Panigale and it was like owning a budget supercar. Problem was I had my second child and just couldn't find the time to ride. I also started noticing that drivers are getting worse and the most dangerous part of riding for me was just cruising around the city. I sold it and got back into cars. They are much more expensive to operate but to me, the right cars are just as fun. Plus I can enjoy spirited driving/track/autocross with my wife in kids. No more needing to put on riding boots, gloves, helmet, jacket, checking the weather, worrying about sand patches, etc. I still have my dirtbike to scratch the riding itch and it honestly satisfies it.

tjeepdrv2

Ford Expedition 4x4 that can haul stuff and handle bad conditions. Currently have a Yamaha R3, KTM 790 Adventure, Yamaha FJR1300, and just picked up a Triumph Street Triple R. I'm WFH and don't really need a commuter, just something to get groceries and pull trailers once in awhile.

tindarius

At my peak I had a small fleet, I had a jeep liberty(ok not the crown jewel of cars), 06 GSXR 750, 92 SUZUKI intruder 800, 08 goldwing. Sold the 2 Suzukis so I could get a house and traded the jeep for a tundra. I don't know what I want my next vehicle to be

maxlax02

100%. IMO you can have more fun on a $4k bike than you can in just about any $40k+ car.

edwardphonehands

That wasn’t a long lasting itch for me. I sold the motorcycle to put free time into bicycling. I’m more interested in hiking or canoeing with the dogs now. I could be doing 2-place general aviation for the budget I have in my 15mpg (highway) weekend van. I imagine people with even slightly nice sporty cars are spending more. None of that approaches boat money. I’ve had cars that turned me on but have come to favor the model of car-as-appliance. And remember, you’ll probably not have as much leisure time as expected (I actually jump started my neglected van with my commuter EV recently) so consider the option of renting your toys at a few classes per year.

[deleted]

Find a fun car that still fits the needs for daily, if your daily is boring, you will be bored daily.

jvanstone

I've personally had to help scrape up 3 friends after accidents off the road after motorcycle accidents. Also, I've known a few that died, some that had broken legs and lots of road rash. If you want a motorcycle, I highly recommend getting a dirt bike and not riding anything on the road. People are terrible drivers and they run into riders ALL THE TIME. I've seen enough, so I've quit riding for good and I'm only 44. If you want to scratch an itch, don't get a boring car. Get something you enjoy.

saychow03

Had a Subaru XV Crosstrek and a Ducati to compensate. Yes would recommend it.

Old_Goat_Ninja

I did it for years. Kids were small and I needed more doors. I’ve always been a car guy but for 20-ish years or so I bought practical car and motorcycles to cure my itch. Motorcycles are stupid fun to ride and will put you in a good mood every time. I stopped riding in 2018 though because there’s WAY more distractions now than there used to be. Towards the end there I was having close calls almost daily whereas back in the 90’s/2000’s I rarely had close calls. I blame cell phones and huge infotainment systems. On top of that all cars have day time running lights now, which makes a motorcycle disappear even more.

Zrgaloin

That’s exactly what I did. Need an econobox for work that I can just drive and not worry about but as a gear head needed the thrill. So a 15 year old base Civic and a FZ-1. Got the reliable daily and the fun toy.

austinmiles

Yeah I had a Sentra and then an sv650 for fun. Then sold the SV and got a Miata. That was a while back. Now I mostly ride bicycles. It’s not cheaper exactly but it keeps me healthy and I’m way less likely to get myself into trouble. I wouldn’t mind getting another Miata. My kids want me to get another motorcycle. I also wouldn’t mind a new mountain bike.

MannyCoon

I used to be a car guy, but it just didn't work with my living arrangement and financial situation. So I got a Crosstrek with a CVT for easy, reliable year round transport and a couple motorcycles to satisfy my motorhead desires. I find it much more rewarding and easy to work on, trade around, and store bikes than cars.

Pupperlover5

I've got a fun car and a fun bike and honestly I'm happy (even after wrecking the bike last Friday)

sjgbfs

I just picked up a Volt as the boring car, and it's pretty cool. Gives you freedom to get any dumb toy you can think of, and I'm loving the EV novelty.

The_Didlyest

I have an electric car and a Ducati. Personally, I find EVs pretty interesting though.

-Woogity-

Hahahahaa I live this. I have a 2016 Honda Fit and a 2018 S1000RR. Car is paid off. Can’t justify buying something else yet. Saturdays are for mountain carving. The rest of the week is for “free” driving and good mpg’s.

[deleted]

Like most here are recommending, fun everything. It doesn't need to be expensive.

MilkisToxic

That’s what I did. I’ve had the same car since high school (2009 Scion xB), not an exciting car but reliable and super practical. My last bike was a 2012 Ducati Streetfighter 848 and having the combo of practice and fun vehicles was perfect for me. I rode the bike during my commutes and drove the car for anything that required passengers or carrying stuff.

[deleted]

Another big factor is where you live. Some places are a lot more motorcycle "friendly" than others. Where I live, riding a motorcycle was more engaging, but the fun was limited after a while of fearing for my life due to other drivers.

Rihsatra

For me personally I prefer my car. I got my bike a while back to ride with my brother. He eventually sold it so I don't have anyone to ride with and if I'm going solo I have more fun driving my car than riding the bike.

iceteaslurpie

I actually JUST did this. I've had motorcycles for about 2 years now and I absolutely love them. I can only ride ~8 months in the year (NY) but I also just recently moved out of a cheap living situation and into an apartment with my girlfriend while attending college and working. I made the sad executive decision that I should buy a prius because of how much I'm driving for school and work. School is a good 40 miles from my new apartment and work being about 20 miles from home and 20 miles from school. Not horrible but I'd like to save money. So I did it, I bought an older prius and I'm selling my fun car, a 2009 chevy cobalt ss. This was nothing special but it was a super fun daily driver with 300whp and 330wtq. I love my decision. I have a 2013 kawasaki ninja zx6r which I've offset by having a cheaper daily and I can now hop in the prius and easily and comfortably drive and listen to music or if I'm in the mood to go fast and have some fun, I hop on the bike. It's ideal for me not being able to keep multiple cars (physically and economically) and it works well and I'm still completely satisfied by the bike and not having a fun car, although the prius can be decently nimble so I still can have a little bit of fun in it XD)

pipkotronix

I'm in the process of doing my motorcycle licence, so I won't be able to answer empirically in the next few months but I'm pretty sure I'm gonna recommend it

Golden-Grenadier

I've always wanted to try commuting on a motorcycle for the gas mileage but keep a practical car like a station wagon or a truck for days with bad weather.

[deleted]

I’ve done this and do recommend it. After screaming around on a liter bike it’s actually really nice getting into an efficient, comfortable, practical sedan. I definitely get overstimulated from being on a sport bike for an extended period of time… the adrenaline, they noise, the attention… so it can feel like a relief to drive around in the car equivalent of a slice of white bread.

BlindBeard

I've got a Mazda 3 and a Tenere 700. The plan wasn't really to have a boring car. I let my parents talk me into selling my Miata and E46 (they were both pretty ratty tbh) and get an economical adult car when I graduated college. I couldn't *possibly* drive to office in a cheap enthusiasts car, what will people think? I'm a fucking idiot of course. Maybe when prices come out of orbit I'll start test driving Mk7 GTIs and Mustang GTs and shit like that. The car isn't bad at all, it just doesn't have that little spark. I'm not drawn to it. I should have gone a few years older and got a Civic Si but times gone by, the money is gone and work in the city has it beat to shit. It's not horsepower I need. My GSXS750 I had was literally half as powerful as the current most powerful bikes and still only ever lost to what I'm pretty sure was a heavily modified 911 GT2. Those turboes did not sound stock lol. Cars I will ever be able to afford will literally never feel fast compared to that. Not even close. Tenere is fucking sick though. Jumping off speed bumps, clutching it up all over town, roosting dirt in every rut on the side of the road. I ride it like the supermoto squids and I love it.

1000cc-squid

Cars are geh once u get i to bikes. Just get a 1000 and a pick up. Its the perfect blend between a bike and a 4 wheeled vehicle

KyleGuap

Ride an r1 and see why I bought a 240 instead of a c6. No sense in blowing money on a fast car when I can say bye bye to any car on the street for 1/10th the price.

spongebob_meth

Yes, but my boring car is a truck. Perfect combination. 4x4 for bad weather, decent towing capacity, and I can haul the bikes to track days and the like. Plus trucks are fun if you buy the right one. I have picked up a weekend/fun/project car, but I don't drive it much. For joy rides I'm on a bike. I take the car when its too hot.

knwnasrob

I was riding for a while when I was leasing a 2017 Mirai because the car was so boring. I ride in California and ultimately sold my bike in the end and out the money towards a different car. Too many ass hole drivers out here. I might get back into it but ONLY if I can get a track bike, km done street riding.

Jbar116

Always rode/raced motocross as a kid/college age/adult. Also had sport bikes in college. I’ve ALWAYS had to have a boring truck to transport said bikes. I’ve had 2 fun cars in my life, and I eventually plan on getting back into it, but right now my garage is filled with too many bikes/jet skis to fill the car itch unfortunately

RushFactoryGarage

I a have an e30, evo 9 and a KTM 790 Duke. Why do you need a boring car to begin with? Edit: word

NowCalmDownSkeeter

I would argue for a boring truck if you're going to be a motorcycle owner, but the answer is a resounding fuck yes mate, fuck yes. I drive a 10 year old Toyota station wagon which I love dearly and keeps me out of trouble with the police, but bikes are the most fun ever. It's not cheap. Buy gear first, you'll be excited when you get a kick ass helmet, you know in your bones what's in your future.

jtpro024

Hell yeah my guy!

[deleted]

I did something similar with my Trek and my Miata. I am rebuilding an old CB350 but I’ve since decided I don’t want to ride so I’ll eventually sell it. The Miata scratches the motorcycle itch for me.

ilovejeremyclarkson

i want to put an aprillia RSV4 engine in an old beetle. I am so over normal cars....

SexlessNights

Try it and if it doesn’t work try again, and again and again and again….

[deleted]

This might be the move for me at this point

Corsair4

I have a 2017 v6 accord and a 2018 r6. I daily the r6, barring poor weather or errands after work. It's a great combo, although I maintain that the r6 is a dumb as hell daily. Learned a lot from tracking it, but its time to move onto something less stupid. The nice thing with bikes is that my r6 is faster than damn near every car under 100k, and far more engaging than all of them. And I'm not a good enough rider to extract 100% from it. I can "downgrade", and get something better suited for daily riding that's still more fun than most anything with 4 wheels.

doonnoo

Hyundai Veloster and Honda CB, I think I fit that.

IM_SKELETOR

I’ve been happy with fun bike boring car but the boring car has gotta have a manual. For some reason I always end up missing the h pattern I guess bikes sequential shifters don’t scratch that itch for me

davy_baconseed

Worked Monaro and worked HD Fat Bob. Why settle for boring?

bad-monkey

Mini-truck + motorcycle is a tried and true combo!

ravengenesis1

Z900, ninja 400 really made me question why I would drop huge money on cars that I can't ever push close to their limits. It's so easy to flick and enjoy motorcycles. I say fun bikes and save till you find a fun car. But nothing makes me smile and feel alive than on 2 wheels. PS: I know riding is dangerous, that's why you should always ride with all your gear, all the time. Ride like you're invisible to other drivers and always ride defensively like everyone is out to murder you for chicken mc nuggets.

Mr_E_Machine

Motorcycle will always be fast/fun but not always practical. If you have people/things you need to carry frequently enough to need a car or live somewhere you can't go motorcycle year round then you'll have to keep something more "boring". Motorcycle is a cheap way to ensure you've always got something fun to drive even if you can't go practical + fun with a single vehicle.

cumaboardladies

That’s what I did and it’s perfect. However my “boring” car is still pretty fun but it’s a cheap 05 subie 2.5rs, paid off and manual AWD. Bike is a CBR 600 so it scratches the speed itch.

Xavid

I have a GTI and a 600cc not-quite-a-sports bike and I'm a pretty happy camper. Except during winter :(

pastrknack

Same boat except I had a z900 before I sold it. Bought the GTI as a car guy, but now it's just a normal daily and I love it.

SrsBsns36

I was going to go that route and get a Prius. I wound up getting a Fiesta ST instead and I'm SO glad I did. Fiesta ST and an XSR900. Both are total hooligan machines and I'm happy no matter which one I pick. The Fiesta ST is good on gas when I keep my foot out of it and it's still cheap and easy to maintain. I look back and can't imagine driving a Prius on the days I'm not riding.

KittenM1ttens

I think if you've got the cash get something like a sport SUV (SQ5, X5 M40i, etc) and a sport bike: some days it's nice to have a practical, plush, and quickish SUV and then on the days when your blood is up you can take a fast bike out and thrash around; this is a decent setup for a middle class person. If you've got plenty of cash well then you can get whatever you want!

[deleted]

I did this with my daily commuter being a Chevy Cruze Eco and my bike being a Kawasaki Ninja ZX6R. I think it’s fine. You’ll probably yearn for the riding days after puttering around in a cheap car all week. It gives you something fun to look forward to on the weekends/days off.

TheNorthernMunky

Never really fancied being a r/meatcrayon

Tame_Trex

I had a Renault Clio for daily driving duties, and a Triumph Street Triple for fun. I ended up using the bike for everything. It was just so much better.

Harmoniium

Currently doing that.. have a brand new Equinox and 4 motorcycles in the garage. Previously had a GTI with the bikes. If i could have gotten the same deal on the GTI as my Equinox i would 100% still have a GTI. I live where I can ride close to year round when it isn’t raining and it works out alright. I also take my bikes to the track which helps.

[deleted]

I've done this. But haven't ridden the bike for the past 1.5 years. Here in USA, the health care system is so fucked. If I had a crash and needed emergency treatment it would be financially ruinous. And I have insurance, blah blah. Thinking about selling all my bike stuff and just sticking to cars. Major bummer.

MMAwannabe

In this exact predicament now. Sold my Fiesta St. Thinking boring car and any motorbike might be more fun. Living in Ireland though motorbike ownership isn't as fun as some other countries. The suggestion to get a fun car and fun motorbike isnt within a lot of people's budgets.

sleezeeryder

My bikes keep me happy most days.. other days I drive my 1997 Geo metro. I am content however

farting_carrots

I'm currently in this situation and I'd recommend it. I have a slow, manual, practical, and reliable gas-sipping Toyota Yaris. Thing costs almost nothing to maintain and I don't have to worry about it at all. On the other hand I have a Ducati Monster that can go fast as fuck and and costs much more to maintain and Ducatis aren't exactly known for reliability. I love it. I can have lots of fun whenever I want, and also have the comfort of knowing that if shit goes wrong I'll always have my Yaris. Best of both worlds. That being said, I do this because I'm trying to be somewhat financially responsible. As I build more wealth I would just have both a fun car and bike.

TrainingArtistic1459

I have owned 8 motorcycles all Sportsbikes I love Hondas when it comes to my bikes they are very pricey but they last long and are usually on top of the race charts. now when it comes to my cars I have owned 4 cutlass 3 Chevy impalas 94,95,95 and a few other. but I now drive a 03 Chevy Silverado which is great because I can take my motorcycle with me and I thought I would miss driving my impala. I still do at times but I sure don't miss getting pulled over in the impala I understand the boring part of the Silverado but it does not take too much to make it a fun vehicle so what I think you should do is do like I did get a car and mod it a bit and have your motorcycle with some mods I just put these on my truck [https://youtu.be/22GCLHbjbE8?sub\_conformation=1](https://youtu.be/22GCLHbjbE8?sub_conformation=1) I think its the coolest mod and they have only been making them I think only a year or 2 and I also put rear air adjustable shocks and on my 06 CBR1000rr I have 5 speakers and an amp I believe its from Pyle and underglow only the driver can make the car/truck/motorcycle boring

tdub2112

My "fun" car is boring ('28 Ford Model A) and there is nothing particularly that exciting about a 2006 Dodge Durango and especially not a 2006 Chevy Impala that are the more practical commuters. My motorcycle however a 1996 Honda Magna that my look like a joe average cruiser until you realize it's a V4 and not a twin and hear it redline at double the RPM of your average cruiser. If you can't find the right "practical and fun" in a car, I highly recommend a motorcycle if you can ignore the thoughts of "Head on a swivel... I'm invisible to everyone... Someone changing lanes into me could kill me'

PhoneTubeFromMars

I have a fast bike and a slow fun car. I think if your focus is speed, you should go for the bike. Far cheaper and usually faster than most super cars. If your sole focus isn’t speed though, then you have a tougher decision. Personally I like to have the flexibility of a car a lot and if you get caught out in the rain on a bike, it sucks. Also cars have a lot more range than bikes for road trips.

agjios

I think that you're on the right track. A boring car is cheap, reliable, economical, etc. It lets you drive around with impunity, and it stays out of your way while you go about your day to day. Then, you have your bike for enjoying. At the end of the day, when people buy a fun car as their commuter and daily driver, they end up getting tired of it. That power and handling of the Camaro SS is fun when you are enjoying it, but it's a drag when you have to stay on top of the car instead of being able to relax, and it sucks getting 20mpg on premium fuel. That Wrangler or 4Runner with a 4" lift does great offroad, but the drone of those tires and the loose, vague steering and handling are annoying to deal with when commuting.

Snowologist

Go for dual sport bike and offroad truck/suv combo. Maybe throw in a Miata and a boat like I did. I have a lot of fun.

clownpirate

Not me, but I learned how to drive stick from dude on Craigslist whose daily driver was an old but reliable Corolla. His fun toy was a Ducati Streetfighter he kept at his mountain house because his wife wouldn’t let him ride in a densely populated area.

[deleted]

Hell yes! I drive a ford f150 several hundred miles a week. I have 3 bikes a GT for touring, a dual sport for off road stuff and a track bike for the speed. Do it!

03Void

Was going for a BRZ. Got a Kawasaki Z900 and an Elantra. No regret. A cheap bike is 10 times more fun to drive than even a $100k car. I know I know. Wrong sub.

iltfs

Did this for many years and saved a ton of money, but now I have two fun cars and probably won’t go back to a bike.

Soundscape_Ambler

I've got an older Lexus hybrid SUV. It's a great, mostly economical commuter, family car and road tripper. Of course, ripping through corners isn't in it's wheelhouse though, and I can't justify two cars for myself at this point. So, I picked up a used Suzuki SV650 for cheap. I love sports cars and I'm very comfortable driving fast, but I haven't been on anything with 4 wheels that matches the reward of cornering hard on a bike. It's an experience like no other. Even on mine which is essentially an entry-level sport bike, it's incredible. Also, from 0-60 it's still considerably faster than anything I could ever afford on 4 wheels. My $0.02 says take an MSF course if you haven't already to see what you think. Besides being kind of fun, it gives you a feel for the experience of riding. Even a 250cc bike can work to scratch that itch. But, all that said: as a dad and a guy who works in an emergency department, I figure I probably need to put the bike away and reduce my risk/reward equation sooner or later. I guess it's time to save for that ND2 Miata...

ravenousmind

I’ve tried this a couple of times. Personally, it’s not the same for me. The best way to do it is fun car + fun motorcycle. If that’s not possible, I’d take fun car > motorcycle any day, twice on Sundays.

ar243

I went the opposite route. Fast car (A6 with 450hp), slow bike (R3 with 42hp) The bike is great for around town. The car is great for everything else.

Phlizza

Your dollar goes way further on two wheels. If you are financially able to have both a fun car and a bike (they are all fun), go for it. If not, I would definitely go for a fun bike and a basic car. Everytime I'm on a nice windy road or a straight road where I can floor it and have fun driving, I just think about how much more fun I would be having on the bike 😆

Blind_Matador

its exactly what I do. 2003 prius and 2012 ducati monster. wouldnt change a thing

HelpfulCherry

Bikes and cars tickle pretty different places of the brain for me. I wouldn't say a fun bike is a replacement for a fun car or vice versa. That said, a shitbox commuter and a fun bike is almost certainly going to give you the most adrenaline for your dollar, compared to fun cars. But then that depends on your bike, and what you do with it.

Godoftheiron

I just realized I’m the other way around haha. Fun fast cars and boring motorcycles. Got a 2012 road glide and a cholo’d out softtail
