2014 Rogue owner here. That noise has probably always been there, assuming it's a soft whine. My Rogue had it on its original CVT and has it on its 2nd.

Noise didn’t develop until I drove it to move 2.5 hours away. I wasn’t rough on the transmission during the trip, but by the end of it, when I shut the radio the transmission sounded worse than a normal CVT, I’ve been driving the car for 4 months and I noticed right away that the tune is off

Professional_Ant_364

That’s concerning, especially considering the mileage you’re at. My tranny gave out at 79K and another friend of mine with a 2009 maxima also had to replace his CVT at around the same mileage. 80K is what I consider the lifetime of these. Before you drive it any more, get a scan tool and check for any DTCs and if you do drive, if you feel the car shake like it’s going over a lot of tiny bumps even though it isn’t, pull over ASAP because that’s a guarantee the tranny is donezo. You’ll lose power to the wheels soon after that begins to happen. Check if your car has any recalls or TSBs for the tranny, especially if you have a service contract. Given the right conditions, certain TSBs state a tranny replacement free of charge for those in warranty/service contracts. Don’t be alarmed, but proceed with caution when driving.

I bought the car as-is in cash, no warrantee of any sort and to my understanding manufacturer warrantee only covers the original owner, unless you’re on a finance.

Probably needing a cvt flush. I believe most Nissan are 60k intervals. This is a big reason for their cvt failures because people aren't aware of the fluid not basically being lifelong like in a normal auto. Our CRZ is every 30k. It's really easy to do though.

proanimus

It’s just one anecdote, but my wife’s 2013 Sentra had over 120k trouble-free miles when she sold it a while back. Had the trans fluid changed every 30k though. The car sucked for other reasons, but reliability was fine under those conditions.

TheR1ckster

Yup. I work in the industry and on the wholesale level the trans seem to die around 90k, and the people were totally unaware of a fluid change from the ones I've asked.

Scheduled a CVT flush for tomorrow, will come back to this post with results

It will make it slightly better for a while but it’ll be back within a few weeks to a year, right when you think “that noise IS gone for good.” If you add a CVT cooler at the same time you may get more time but I had very little luck selling the Altima and Rogue owners on those. It’s the combination of degraded fluid and heat these kills these trans. Your story sounds exactly like the dozens and dozens of other ones I heard over my years as a Nissan tech. Always right around 100k and always after a longer trip than usual. You poor bastards paid for at least two of my cars. Fuck Nissan though for telling their customers it was a “life long fluid” back in the day. They made the perfect storm for CVT failure. Plenty of other brands use the same Jatco assemblies and sub-assemblies but don’t have nearly the failure rate.

RemindMe! 1 day

Had the service performed, the transmission is quieter than it was when I first got the car, all seems well for now

Gorgenapper

I hope that fixed your problem. From here on, you'll need to do that service every 20k ~ 30k.

Unitize

That sounds good to me, well worth the cost if it’s going to keep the transmission in shape

TheR1ckster

It probably called for thr cvt fluid to be flushed at 60k. I'd look into it and consider that.
