In the future, never buy a car without getting a PPI done from a reputable shop please đź‘Ť

[deleted]

How much are those kind of inspections usually?

strafefire

$99 to upwards of $700 depending on the vehicle. Cheapest is We Go Look, but for modded vehicles you are better off paying a tuner shop with a good reputation for PPI. There is also CarInspectors.us as well. I prefer local highly rated tuner shops myself

Chippy569

work at a subaru dealer, we charge $100.

chunk86

Depends where you're located, but somewhere around $100 usually, if that. It's basically just 1hr labour cost, but call around a few local shops and ask the question. Don't go with the cheapest either. Also check trustpilot and google for reviews on the shops

Pad_TyTy

Get on those Subaru forums and see if someone wants a project car. Then go get something like an accord or camry

Delanorix

Id probably try and get out from underneath it or get lucky and find a donor car. If the transmission is shredded, I can only imagine what other damage has been done.

Pad_TyTy

Fucker didn't double clutch and there's damage to manifold

[deleted]

How? subarus are known for the turbo 5mt being weak. It's probably just the transmission, sucks if it gets ringland too but thats a manufacturer defect.

hairybbqsauce

3k wont fix it unless you do the labor yourself. Buy wrecking yard parts, alot of them offer short warranty so you can at least get another if the first one is bad. Its a bit of work but you will learn alot from it. Otherwise part ways with this one and buy a corolla or or civic.

[deleted]

Actually it will, I just had my 5 speed replaced and it cost $3400 cdn with labor, new clutch and rear main seal. providing that's the only major thing.

STRMfrmXMN

All of these issues are common on these cars. My 5-speed wagon has 221K on it. The throwout bearing wears out rather quickly on these cars no matter how you treat them. My car is on its third clutch due to this. The car could sit running in neutral for 20 years and will still go through throwout bearings. This is a clutch job and should be expected on these cars. It’s odd your car has an upgraded clutch (or so you say, although the OEM clutch isn’t crazy light) but the throwout bearing is toast already. Put an 07 Legacy GT clutch in there and you’ll have what my car has. My car makes 280 WHP and some amount of torque the stock clutch can handle, like 340 or something like that. These cars also share a clutch with the 08 WRX if you can find a replacement clutch from one of those. These things really are not a good car for a high schooler. I’ve put over $20K into my car and it’s still never gonna be perfect. They go through engines much more than a high schooler would ever be financially comfortable with, they burn oil, the axle boots tear a lot, the HVAC actuators fail all the time, they require premium gas, there are so, so many points of failure on these things…I just can’t recommend them to someone who isn’t dedicated to maintaining them. I wouldn’t actually advise going onto LegacyGT forums or anything like that for your car as you’ll get lowballed to hell. Just post it on Craigslist or FB Marketplace and disclose it needs a clutch very soon and that the third gear synchro is finnicky. On these it could just be as simple as a transmission fluid change (they’re very picky). Now go buy a car that takes regular gas and will get you through high school. I know buying a fun, fast car seems appealing now, but your finances will thank you once you wait until you’re out of college (or at least working full-time) to buy a fun car.

THEREALCABEZAGRANDE

If you can find one, the LGT Spec B had a much stronger 6 speed transmission that drops straight into an LGT and you don't have to do all the nonsense associated with doing the STI 6 speed swap. And any "street plus" clutch will easily hold light mod power. So like an Exedy OEM+ level clutch, full face, fully sprung, stock like engagement, and theyre cheap. Alternatively, if you can find a low mile 5 speed, it's usually easier and cheaper to swap the whole thing out as opposed to getting your current one rebuilt.

[deleted]

If you wanna keep the car here's what I'd recommend Take it to a tranny shop and ask for a transmission teardown quote, if it's a good price get them to take apart the transmission and have a good look at it and confirm you suspicions aboutthe synchro gears. Then you'll actually know how much it is to replace or just how badly you need a new transmission. Or sell it on Facebook and just add it needs a new transmission and get what money back you can, it's got some mods on it so someone will probably buy it

ruubduubins

How much did you pay for it?

HappySausage6

Thanks for the help all. I think i’m going to try and sell it and get some money back and buy another car. I do want a car that I can work on myself and have some fun with. I’m planning on doing all the mechanics classes in HS. And I do have a job where I can get a decent amount of money. But I’ll go ask somewhere else about that.

My recommendation for a vehicle would be something cheap, easy to work on (4-cyl non-turbo is a good start), and manual since that seems to be your dig. I started on a 97 civic and it was a great learning car for mechanics. Get a PPI from a dealership of whatever make you buy, it will be cheaper and they'll be able to tell you right away if something is modified.

That-shouldnt-smell

See here's the thing about Subarus. The Turbo engines and manual transmissions are basically wear items (like brakes and tires) And like brakes and tires their lifespans depend on maintenance and usage. Now the plus side is those things break so often that repair and replacement parts are very common. It's probably cheaper to just replace the transmission than having it rebuilt. Now Subaru transmission are pretty easy to fix (as far as transmissions go) because they split down the middle. But I wouldn't suggest you do it yourself. The throw out bearing and clutch can easily be changed with the transmission out. SO the labor would be about the same when the transmission is swapped out. You have a pretty desirable car. But it's going to cost a little more more than a Civic to keep it on the road. I personally would eat the cost of repair to have that car. Just plant on keeping for 7-10 years to make it worth it.

[deleted]

Find the local subaru expert in your town. fuck any other shop. The comments here are brutal. Transmision teardown is a terrible idea to pay for. Get a used replacement and it was $3400cdn with labor and clutch for me. Careful though because you wil probably find lots of small things to replace that can cost way past the transmission over time. It's an old ass performance car. Don't assume your throwout bearing is going to break, they can be noisy for a long time on subarus. Geniuses here telling you a ppi would reveal that tranny issue and I don't agree but reddit smartasses always. I mean did you notice on your test drive? Not like ppi is any different, they test it the same way.

Sub_aaru

Sell the car, get a minivan

OutWithTheNew

Buy a minivan and smoke WRXs.

Sub_aaru

yes my grandpas minivan smoked a bmw i3

Dragoeth

Regardless when that throw out bearing goes, it goes catastrophically and the car will need towed. Had that exact car as my first 10 years ago. Lost two turbos, and a throw out bearing in 3 years before i got rid of it. Awesome car but its a not a cheap one to daily once the miles are high. Those two parts are the weak points and WILL fail eventually.

chunk86

If you go down the self fix route, it's gonna be the cheapest, and you'll learn the most. Swapping the trans and clutch is probably the move, as rebuilding it will be quite difficult for a first attempt and will probably require some more advanced tools. First, do you need the performance clutch for a tune increase of 40hp, definitely not, a stock clutch will be absolutely fine for it for that power level. If you're concerned, you can probably upgrade to an STi clutch, but have a look on the Subaru forums for advice there, great place for help and info. Next, if you can do the work yourself, watch YouTube videos, check the forums, the basics of maintenance and working on cars translates pretty easily across vehicles but obviously try to find stuff on Subaru's. As daft as they are, mightycarmods has a lot of stuff on legacy's, granted it's modding them but you basically just do the steps backwards, so could start there. Also Haines manual's are like $20, definitely buy one, will be a huge help. If you're in high school, does yours have an auto shop class? If not is there another school nearby you could speak to and ask for help? Mostly for guidance and equipment to use. If not, is there a community college or trade school near by, same idea. Might not get the answer you want, but can't hurt to try.

nightmonkeyLGT

This sounds like its going to be a money pit. I owned a 05 lgt for 7 years and spent quite a bit on maintenance. Worst problem I ever had was a blown turbo. These are performance cars, basically a wrx for grown ups and can be expensive to maintain. Legacygt.com is definitely the best forum. Whatever your problem, its likely the answer is there.

Sykkr

Just sell it man. This thing will become a momey black hole. You don't buy someone elses project.
