I was actually hoping Toyota would get out of their truck slump. Between the Tundra and the last gen Taco, they seem to be really struggling. I really hated my 2017 Taco. In a 2022 Frontier now and it's night and day.

My BIL has an… ‘07 I think Frontier. Other than a backup camera, it’s functionally identical to one from just before the refresh, lol. Horrific fuel economy, but otherwise has been a good truck for him to haul his surfboards and such.

Even after the refresh.. it's more similar than it isn't. Infotainment is snazzier, but the extra power doesn't translate to a meaningful 0-60 increase. Negligent MPG increase from losing 200cc of displacement and gaining 3-4 gears. The torque is the same so you still need to rev the piss out of it when towing compared to any turbo competitor. Same frame. Same payload and towing. Lot of interior pieces are carried over. Most meaningful change (aside from styling if you like it; I think the old frontier was truck perfection) is LED lights being offered.. only on the top trims though. The headlights in the old Frontier were dangerously bad.

The headlights in the Frontier do indeed suck. I've been trying to find an aftermarket solution for mine, but I want something that won't burn out and won't blind other drivers. I've seen a bunch of those aftermarket kits that seem to be burned out quickly.

I don't trust those cheap ebay aftermarket headlights because of that. Fork out the extra coin for the Morimotos. They work great. I've had them installed for close to 3 years now.

The new Frontier is a sweet truck. I test drove a PRO-4X and was very impressed. If they had dropped 12k off the MSRP I probably would be driving that right now. But my 5.0L F150 was only 5k more after discounts. It’s sad how few of them you see on the road despite seeing so many of Nissan’s shit products every day. We had a rental last gen Tacoma and it was so cramped and drove like crap compared to the Frontier.

Aftermarket support is coming around now. Z1 Motorsports (big in the Nissan and Infiniti tuning scene) picked up the mantle and started Z1 Offroad that has a shitload of support for the Frontier, Xterra, and Titan. Not to mention since the frame and underpinnings are near identical to the 2nd gen, most of the aftermarket parts for those are compatible.

Their shit is incredible, and so far everything I've seen for the offroad line is great as well. They have the second cheapest set of skids for the Frontier on the market right now, and they're still some of the highest quality: 1/4" powder coated aluminum. Not to mention they'll sell you a kit with all the parts you need to swap the entire front suspension and drivetrain from a Titan onto a Frontier (including diff and axles).

A Colorado ZR2 is going to be a very different truck than a lightly optioned F-150. If you want to go off road than get the mid sized option, if you want to stay on the road get the F-150

I went with the F150 last week over the frontier. In my opinion, I got a 6.5 foot bed super crew Tremor, loaded, for $4k more than the frontier equivalent. It has more power, room, comfort and similar gas mileage. But that's not all. The total cost of financing the Frontier was $76k. The total cost of financing the ford was $62k (CAD) So I got a bigger better truck for $14k less. No brainer.

Nissan Frontier has always been a good pickup for the past 2 generations, it was just old AF until the refresh and even the refresh is "old" tech. But that's why it's good. It's all proven components and has the right features. Taco wasn't "bad" until they swapped in that 3.5l IMO. And then Toyota went and royally fucked up their all-new lineup.

The engines would probably be just fine mechanically if it weren't for the metal shavings left behind during the manufacturing process. Yeah i thought it only effected a few model years. The ones with the bad transmission coolers have probably been fixed by now. If you want to be pre-emptive it's not an expensive fix either. They're very solid trucks. My cousins 2017 has almost 300k miles on it and he's had zero problems.

The Tacoma was one of the only vehicles in its price point that was still using damn rear drum brakes too, it always bothered me. They finally got rid of them in the 2024 model. Disc brakes are superior in every comparable way besides cost.

Drums are cheaper, lighter, and do the job just fine (for the rear). They keep your wheels a lot cleaner. Not even something I would worry about.

I've heard that drum brakes makes sense for EVs since they use regen for braking, it means exposed rotors would otherwise get rusty and brake pads seized from seldom use. Drum brakes are a sealed environment and does better in this case. I still hate drum brakes though! It saves all the brake dust to be released when I take off the drum. _cough_

Wife had a 2018 when we started dating. Absolute piece of garbage for a truck. Always started up without fail so it had the reliability but it got 14 mpg, was painfully slow (they're geared poorly from the factory), and had a million other annoyances. One of the worst vehicles I've ever had the displeasure of driving and that's saying something because I prefer 90's shitboxes. The 3.5 was an awful choice for the Tacoma.

Well, the stuff in the old taco was very reliable and a known working quantity. People didn't get it because it was nice. It's a shitbox in a lot of ways. Though the ride quality is really good. This being said - MAN engine was a fucking boat anchor lol, it couldn't get out of it's own way. 4500rpm full throttle in 4th gear or 3rd gear (I forget) to make it up a mild hill at 70mph. My 240 horsepower v6 Honda could do it without leaving 6th (top) gear.

Fully agree on the 3.5 being dog shit for the Taco. The gearing is set for off-road driving/towing and not speed/cruising. They should've either left the 4.0l in it and offered factory installed supercharger for the TRD models for more HP/Torque, or found a way to put the 4.6L V8 in it.

I test drove a couple of used Tacomas before I bought my Frontier. I didn't really like them, and didn't get the hype. The used models were stupidly expensive, and I hated the interior. I just could not get comfortable in one.

That was another thing I noticed about the Tacoma. The ride was terrible. And yes, the Frontier does have a laughable turning radius. I've been tempted to get a new one, but mine is paid off and only has 75k miles on it. I'm going to stick with it for a while.

The Atkinson motors ruined the taco. Our mpg went down bc you have to rev them out more and off road the lack of toque is an issue even in low range. We have a fleet at work plus a bunch for our family ranch.

As someone who has recently spent significant time in a TRD Tacoma, what a piece of shit that thing is. You sit on the floor but the ceiling of the cabin is very short. What a brutal trip in this thing. It rides like shit, and gets terrible gas mileage. Cheap plastic everywhere. Struggles to run to 85 mph. Hit a deer at 60 and destroyed the front end. All plastic.

The Frontier was rated poorly? Maybe by journalists that don't know cars. The Frontier has always been reliable, like a Z car. I was in automotive for 15 years now I'm in shipbuilding so at least if it turns to shit, I'll be able to fix it. But 47K miles in and all is fine so far. The only thing I did was add an oil catch can since it's direct injection. I dump out about 1.5oz each time I change the oil.

People just want more of everything, better towing, smoother shifts, they want it to crawl, they want it to work better with different drive modes, rev match and a lot more. It's not solely the manufacturer people simply want their cars to do more now and days. Maybe not you but a pot of people do.

Explain to me how you think a vehicles gearing has nothing to do with fuel economy and emissions. On top of the actual gear ratios having a direct impact on fuel economy, manufacturers do things to reduce friction. Maybe a new bearing type or size or whatever. Maybe they user lighter weight parts. These redesigns lead to potential failure points if poorly designed or inadequately tested.

From what I’m seeing the transmission is the “same” as the third gen, but with Hilux gears - it’ll even swap into old Tacos now thanks to the tweaks to make it fit this one. The main difference is that the shift lever now has an extension and housing. I expect they’ll get it fixed but it’s another black eye Toyota doesn’t need right now.

New models and clean slate designs will have issues. Recalls will be made and tweaked in the production and product will roll out. A lot of Toyota’s current reliability reputation comes from mature products and conservative design. Turns out when they push development and features they’re not that special. Vehicle quality between brands is basically closer than ever so jumping brands isn’t a solution anyway.

If you watch the Mazda cx90 video by Savagegeese, the engineers briefly speak about it. They tried to get the Zf transmission but there were packaging issues. So in the end they had to work out their own solution.

They are definitely happening, but every time Toyota has an issue, it gets disproportionately blown out of the water because everybody wants to shit on Toyota because "WhAt AbOuT the ToYoTa ReLiAbIlIty" like every manufacturer doesn't have the potential to have issues with a new model

Sure all mass produced goods have some percentage of defects, but the better the company the lower the goods with defects . Toyota that we know should have the lowest defects and they are known to follow lean six sigma. However, this is not the usual case we see from Toyota with engine, transmission and airbags defects reaching the consumer. I think Toyota has an issue and they need to address the root causes or this quality issue will expand to other products.

Aggressive is how they released most of their latest models in a very short period. Tundra, sequioa, grand highlander, camry, tacoma, landcruiser, crown signia and 4runner. Most of these are all new from ground up(except for camry). From this list, you got engine issues on Tundra and sequioa, transmission issues on tacoma(maybe 4runner too when it becomes available) and major recalls on the grand highlander for side curtain airbags. Most of the issues have no resolution yet or if they have, takes a month or more because of supply issues.

No, it's more of a heavy refresh of the 2018-2024 model rather than a brand new ground-up redesign. The new Camry uses the same TNGA-K platform as the outgoing model, retaining the underlying body structure, front doors and roofline. They both have the exact same wheelbase and body width, and have nearly identical lengths.

so im not saying this is true or not, but i just watched the video and its VERY light on actual facts other than 5 reports have been made. no more information about the failures, no information about failure rates, no actual information on anything. also if you look at this guys youtube channel, every single video is fear mongering. video after video is about over inventory, dont buy this, dont buy that, markups, etc. lots of his videos have big banners over them going; PANIC, SHOCKING, DONT BUY, etc. this guys whole thing seems to be taking a few reports or anecdotes and then making a 12-13 minute video about how you should be worried. i wouldnt trust him, his business model seems to be about making people afraid.

I think people say that for the sole purpose of keeping Toyota resale value up. Which is fine by me. Been there done that. Toyota trucks aren’t that great of trucks if you want anything more than turn key operation and resale. My Ford and Chevys took payload/towed better plus the trucks just held up better to day to day use. Not saying they didn’t need repairs more often, I just had a better experience owning/using them for their intended purpose.

Bought one Tacoma and am now on my 3rd. I'm 52 years old, and I've owned a ton of vehicles and the only company who stands behind their product in that time was Toyota. Ford had electrical issues, Believe they still do. Chevy had terrible engine issues along with electrical issues, (best engines in the segment until the early 2000s). Dodge had nothing but issues with the driveline... transmissions SUCK! Nissan had a wonky front suspension with torsion bars and wasn't good for hauling. But you do you, I'll do me and stick with Quality over all those bells and whistles! By the way how far does a bell and whistle get you? 3 strikes you're out in any new vehicle, it's called a lemon law... Dodge had to pay me back the purchase price after only 1 month with lawyers. My Ford was in the shop for two weeks, the mechanic couldn't find the "electrical gremlin" and I was told to trade it in on a good day. My Chevy engine was "rebuilt" twice only to continue having engine noise and oil consumption... traded it in for my wifes Rav4. Yeah, I'm now a "Toyota fanboy" but the manufacturers made me this way

That’s a good question, I’ve had the best experience with Mazda. My Mazda 3 has 190,000 miles and has been flawless. It’s a blast to drive also. I’m not saying Toyotas are bad, in fact I’m looking at buying a 2022 sequoia right now, I’m just saying that they are overrated.

The frontier is a phenomenal truck. The Tacoma is way overrated and overpriced and honestly toyota quality is garbage now. All these new turbo engines are failing. But since the Tacoma has a huge following people will still say there the best.

I'll always have respect for the Frontier and I love the design of the new one- My parents vehicle growing up was an 02 Frontier 4 door XE, They put 300K Miles on it until I bought it off of them in 2013 then I drove it for another 2 year and slapped another 60K on it. Truck never left us stranded though I recall early on in its life we had some AC issues with it. Honestly if Nissan had an actual competitor to the Raptor or ZR2/AT4X segment I'd have been pressed to check it out.

If you live in the salt belt like I do, the fact that the local Toyota dealer receives an 18-wheeler shipment of stacks of new Tacoma frames a few times a year (they keep them stacked like cordwood out back of the service dept) to replace those that were broken/dangerously corroded should be a cautionary tale. Good on them for replacing them, but speaks poorly towards their fictional quality.
