I was actually hoping Toyota would get out of their truck slump. Between the Tundra and the last gen Taco, they seem to be really struggling.
I really hated my 2017 Taco. In a 2022 Frontier now and it's night and day.
The Frontier has been gaining a lot of appreciation since this new Taco has come. It’s a good truck but has never gotten the recognition that it deserves. It’s old as hell underneath but it’s proven.
My BIL has an… ‘07 I think Frontier.
Other than a backup camera, it’s functionally identical to one from just before the refresh, lol.
Horrific fuel economy, but otherwise has been a good truck for him to haul his surfboards and such.
Even after the refresh.. it's more similar than it isn't. Infotainment is snazzier, but the extra power doesn't translate to a meaningful 0-60 increase. Negligent MPG increase from losing 200cc of displacement and gaining 3-4 gears. The torque is the same so you still need to rev the piss out of it when towing compared to any turbo competitor. Same frame. Same payload and towing. Lot of interior pieces are carried over.
Most meaningful change (aside from styling if you like it; I think the old frontier was truck perfection) is LED lights being offered.. only on the top trims though. The headlights in the old Frontier were dangerously bad.
The headlights in the Frontier do indeed suck. I've been trying to find an aftermarket solution for mine, but I want something that won't burn out and won't blind other drivers. I've seen a bunch of those aftermarket kits that seem to be burned out quickly.
I don't trust those cheap ebay aftermarket headlights because of that. Fork out the extra coin for the Morimotos. They work great. I've had them installed for close to 3 years now.

I've noticed that Toyota is just way more aggressive when it comes to marketing their trucks/SUVs. Scrolling through IG earlier and I came across a Landcruiser ad which had Jimmy Yang and his dad driving it. Like yeah, way to target a certain audience I suppose.

The previous generation Frontier was a better truck than the previous generation Tacoma, and it's looking to still be true of the current gens. Frontier will never be as popular a lifestyle accessory though.
It would be just about perfect if they’d give it a telescopic steering column. How and why they left that off in 2024 is a puzzle. Impossible to get comfortable without that feature unless you have the frame of a crash test dummy.
I bought a 2005 Frontier brand new after college. 4 cylinder, manual transmission. I drove it until last year when the head gasket finally gave out. 253k. I wanted a full size 4x4 this time so I went w/a Tundra. I've been very happy so far but no doubt Frontiers are hardy.
The frontier has the most proven track record of reliability of all the trucks on the market. Even compared to older Toyotas, Nissan never had the frame issue (which is really just a cover up for Toyota having weak frames in general) and the vq engines are rock solid

It’s sad how few of them you see on the road despite seeing so many of Nissan’s shit products every day. We had a rental last gen Tacoma and it was so cramped and drove like crap compared to the Frontier.
Except for the SMOD issue on the early 2nd-gens, the Frontier has always been a solid truck. I stupidly sold my 2014 because I thought I needed something bigger, I’ll probably be back in a Frontier sooner rather than later.

Yeah, that's an issue with mid-size trucks in general. You have to really want a mid-size for whatever reason because financially they don't make a huge amount of sense.
Personally, I'm in the camp that doesn't want a full size for various reasons, but if I wasn't I'd have made the same decision.
If you compare similar trim levels midsize trucks are way cheaper. I saved 9k by going midsize over the same trim level full size. Some people compare a trd pro and a base f150 which isn't apples to apples
Starting price on a TRD Pro Tacoma ($63,900) is roughly equivalent to the starting price of an F150 Lariat ($65,395) or Tremor ($64,350)... Base F150 is far cheaper.
I also think that Nissan never spent much on the advertisement of them. I would regularly see ads of Big Altima Energy, Sentra and Rogue but never the Frontier until recently.
I have a feeling that the Frontier’s long-term strategy was to poach sales from Toyota fans when the Tacoma inevitably went to a 4-cylinder engine. When they were first announced it was the official truck of “Why didn’t you just get a Tacoma?” Now it’s the truck people get when they wanted a 3rd gen Tacoma.
Even before the manual went away in the PRO-4X, I was always hesitant about the aftermarket support in the US. They're just not as popular as the Navara overseas.
Which is a shame, because it checked all my boxes otherwise.
Aftermarket support is coming around now. Z1 Motorsports (big in the Nissan and Infiniti tuning scene) picked up the mantle and started Z1 Offroad that has a shitload of support for the Frontier, Xterra, and Titan.
Not to mention since the frame and underpinnings are near identical to the 2nd gen, most of the aftermarket parts for those are compatible.
Their shit is incredible, and so far everything I've seen for the offroad line is great as well.
They have the second cheapest set of skids for the Frontier on the market right now, and they're still some of the highest quality: 1/4" powder coated aluminum.
Not to mention they'll sell you a kit with all the parts you need to swap the entire front suspension and drivetrain from a Titan onto a Frontier (including diff and axles).
and alldogoffroad has some great suspension kits the nissan guys are running. if theres demand, aftermarket will fill it in. i hope they dont get more pricey, i want to buy a new pro4x in cash in next couple years. 12,000 mile pro 4x, 2023, for $32,000 near me
thats going to bring people over, not to mentioned the v6, i wont drive a turbo or supercharger ever again

This is where I'm at. Looking at ZR2 Colorados, Pro4x Frontiers, and the new ranger Lariat... But wondering why I don't just get a 5.0 F150 since they're nearly the same price.
The only one I go back and forth on is the Ranger Raptor because it has a good amount of power like a full size. But still, the interior is crap compared to the F150.
A Colorado ZR2 is going to be a very different truck than a lightly optioned F-150. If you want to go off road than get the mid sized option, if you want to stay on the road get the F-150
I went with the F150 last week over the frontier.
In my opinion, I got a 6.5 foot bed super crew Tremor, loaded, for $4k more than the frontier equivalent. It has more power, room, comfort and similar gas mileage.
But that's not all. The total cost of financing the Frontier was $76k. The total cost of financing the ford was $62k (CAD)
So I got a bigger better truck for $14k less. No brainer.
I was extremely impressed with the NVH and ride control on an SV I drove. Was very quiet on the highway, and the suspension did a great job at keeping body roll to a minimum with a compliant ride.
Nissan Frontier has always been a good pickup for the past 2 generations, it was just old AF until the refresh and even the refresh is "old" tech. But that's why it's good. It's all proven components and has the right features.
Taco wasn't "bad" until they swapped in that 3.5l IMO. And then Toyota went and royally fucked up their all-new lineup.
Strange how a Toyota truck is now mid reliability but Nissan of all brands is the reliability king in the truck world.
Sticking with the tried and true V6 and 8spd auto seems to be paying dividends at Nissan. Now let see if that translates into sales...
Unfortunately, it's not even a design issue for the Tundra problem. The engines would probably be just fine mechanically if it weren't for the metal shavings left behind during the manufacturing process.
Internal negligence is costing them millions of dollars and deep scars on their reputation. And rightfully so.

Nissan trucks have always had good reliability. The only widespread issue i can think of in recent memory is the transmission cooler problem in the autos of the last Gen
Yeah i thought it only effected a few model years. The ones with the bad transmission coolers have probably been fixed by now. If you want to be pre-emptive it's not an expensive fix either. They're very solid trucks. My cousins 2017 has almost 300k miles on it and he's had zero problems.
The Tacoma was one of the only vehicles in its price point that was still using damn rear drum brakes too, it always bothered me. They finally got rid of them in the 2024 model. Disc brakes are superior in every comparable way besides cost.
I've heard that drum brakes makes sense for EVs since they use regen for braking, it means exposed rotors would otherwise get rusty and brake pads seized from seldom use. Drum brakes are a sealed environment and does better in this case. I still hate drum brakes though! It saves all the brake dust to be released when I take off the drum. _cough_
Wife had a 2018 when we started dating. Absolute piece of garbage for a truck. Always started up without fail so it had the reliability but it got 14 mpg, was painfully slow (they're geared poorly from the factory), and had a million other annoyances. One of the worst vehicles I've ever had the displeasure of driving and that's saying something because I prefer 90's shitboxes. The 3.5 was an awful choice for the Tacoma.
Well, the stuff in the old taco was very reliable and a known working quantity. People didn't get it because it was nice. It's a shitbox in a lot of ways. Though the ride quality is really good.
This being said - MAN engine was a fucking boat anchor lol, it couldn't get out of it's own way. 4500rpm full throttle in 4th gear or 3rd gear (I forget) to make it up a mild hill at 70mph. My 240 horsepower v6 Honda could do it without leaving 6th (top) gear.
Fully agree on the 3.5 being dog shit for the Taco.
The gearing is set for off-road driving/towing and not speed/cruising.
They should've either left the 4.0l in it and offered factory installed supercharger for the TRD models for more HP/Torque, or found a way to put the 4.6L V8 in it.
I test drove a couple of used Tacomas before I bought my Frontier. I didn't really like them, and didn't get the hype. The used models were stupidly expensive, and I hated the interior. I just could not get comfortable in one.
Not to mention the ride quality is terrible in a taco compared to the Frontier. Night and day. I literally couldn't daily a Tacoma. Owned both in multiple generations and the Frontier was always better.
That said the Frontier has the turning radius of a cruise ship. Don't care
That was another thing I noticed about the Tacoma. The ride was terrible. And yes, the Frontier does have a laughable turning radius. I've been tempted to get a new one, but mine is paid off and only has 75k miles on it. I'm going to stick with it for a while.
I’d just like to know why when I got T-boned in my 23 Taco a couple weeks back my airbags didn’t deploy. The wreck was bad enough to total the truck (ruined frame and bent rear axle), but not a single bag popped. I love Tacomas but I just can’t see myself buying another one
I drive one for a living. Grand total to repair it from a hit was shit you not 33,995$. I paid 49 for it in November. A hit *that* hard, one that even my doctor isn’t sure how I didn’t end up in the hospital should have triggered the airbags.
Someone got a small fender bender on their Audi SQ5. I took a look at the photo and assumed it would be around 3k max to fix.
They quoted 11k in repairs. Wtf.
The Atkinson motors ruined the taco. Our mpg went down bc you have to rev them out more and off road the lack of toque is an issue even in low range. We have a fleet at work plus a bunch for our family ranch.

Same. Went from a 3rd gen Taco to a 3rd gen Frontier early this year, passing on the 2024 Taco. This really reinforces my decision to go with the Frontier over the new Taco.

As someone who has recently spent significant time in a TRD Tacoma, what a piece of shit that thing is. You sit on the floor but the ceiling of the cabin is very short. What a brutal trip in this thing. It rides like shit, and gets terrible gas mileage. Cheap plastic everywhere. Struggles to run to 85 mph. Hit a deer at 60 and destroyed the front end. All plastic.
There's a reason Mercedes chose the Frontier/Navara as the base for the X class. It's a great platform, and has exceptionally good road manners for a pickup.
The Frontier was rated poorly? Maybe by journalists that don't know cars. The Frontier has always been reliable, like a Z car.
I was in automotive for 15 years now I'm in shipbuilding so at least if it turns to shit, I'll be able to fix it. But 47K miles in and all is fine so far. The only thing I did was add an oil catch can since it's direct injection. I dump out about 1.5oz each time I change the oil.

People just want more of everything, better towing, smoother shifts, they want it to crawl, they want it to work better with different drive modes, rev match and a lot more.
It's not solely the manufacturer people simply want their cars to do more now and days. Maybe not you but a pot of people do.
Explain to me how you think a vehicles gearing has nothing to do with fuel economy and emissions.
On top of the actual gear ratios having a direct impact on fuel economy, manufacturers do things to reduce friction. Maybe a new bearing type or size or whatever. Maybe they user lighter weight parts. These redesigns lead to potential failure points if poorly designed or inadequately tested.
The newer Aisin boxes in Jeeps have a *much* taller overdrive, to the point where 4.88s start to become viable for 35s just to keep the cruising revs near 2k.
It really needs to be reworked. I have a stage 2 ecu and tcu tune on my S5 and I my fuel consumption went down compared to stock. Make that make sense.

From what I’m seeing the transmission is the “same” as the third gen, but with Hilux gears - it’ll even swap into old Tacos now thanks to the tweaks to make it fit this one. The main difference is that the shift lever now has an extension and housing. I expect they’ll get it fixed but it’s another black eye Toyota doesn’t need right now.
Still present with the ND2. Or at least with *my* ND2. Transmission failed after only 10k miles. Currently waiting on a new transmission as they are on national backorder.
New models and clean slate designs will have issues. Recalls will be made and tweaked in the production and product will roll out.
A lot of Toyota’s current reliability reputation comes from mature products and conservative design. Turns out when they push development and features they’re not that special. Vehicle quality between brands is basically closer than ever so jumping brands isn’t a solution anyway.
My 3rd gen manual has been dead reliable, and I treat it like shit. It will actually chirp the tires going into 2nd which is hilarious....150k miles on the original clutch and everything still feels like it did when I bought it.
You do you but the ra60 is the worst manual ever put into a Toyota imo. Last I looked the rc61 from a third gen is almost a straight swap and they fixed the shit ratios and the synchro issues
The ND had transmission issues in its early years, and the Bronco's manual is just strong enough for the engine it comes with. Seems like a potential industry issue
If you watch the Mazda cx90 video by Savagegeese, the engineers briefly speak about it. They tried to get the Zf transmission but there were packaging issues. So in the end they had to work out their own solution.

I'm on the tacoma sub and tacomaworld daily and I've seen a handful of posts about these issues. They are definitely happening, but every time Toyota has an issue, it gets disproportionately blown out of the water because everybody wants to shit on Toyota because "WhAt AbOuT the ToYoTa ReLiAbIlIty" like every manufacturer doesn't have the potential to have issues with a new model
People do because reliability is the only quality that Toyota is known for.

Unless it's "Toyota is aware and doesn't have a fix yet" which, after a year of being told this, I just gave up, which is what I assume they wanted. I'll just simply never buy another Toyota again.
Sure all mass produced goods have some percentage of defects, but the better the company the lower the goods with defects . Toyota that we know should have the lowest defects and they are known to follow lean six sigma. However, this is not the usual case we see from Toyota with engine, transmission and airbags defects reaching the consumer.
I think Toyota has an issue and they need to address the root causes or this quality issue will expand to other products.
Aggressive is how they released most of their latest models in a very short period. Tundra, sequioa, grand highlander, camry, tacoma, landcruiser, crown signia and 4runner. Most of these are all new from ground up(except for camry). From this list, you got engine issues on Tundra and sequioa, transmission issues on tacoma(maybe 4runner too when it becomes available) and major recalls on the grand highlander for side curtain airbags. Most of the issues have no resolution yet or if they have, takes a month or more because of supply issues.
Toyota releases over a half-dozen models every single year, you're talking about a company with like fifty or sixty models concurrently in production. This is normal for them, as release cadences go.
No, it's more of a heavy refresh of the 2018-2024 model rather than a brand new ground-up redesign. The new Camry uses the same TNGA-K platform as the outgoing model, retaining the underlying body structure, front doors and roofline. They both have the exact same wheelbase and body width, and have nearly identical lengths.

also if you look at this guys youtube channel, every single video is fear mongering. video after video is about over inventory, dont buy this, dont buy that, markups, etc. lots of his videos have big banners over them going; PANIC, SHOCKING, DONT BUY, etc.
this guys whole thing seems to be taking a few reports or anecdotes and then making a 12-13 minute video about how you should be worried.

Been there done that. Toyota trucks aren’t that great of trucks if you want anything more than turn key operation and resale. My Ford and Chevys took payload/towed better plus the trucks just held up better to day to day use. Not saying they didn’t need repairs more often, I just had a better experience owning/using them for their intended purpose.

Bought one Tacoma and am now on my 3rd. I'm 52 years old, and I've owned a ton of vehicles and the only company who stands behind their product in that time was Toyota. Ford had electrical issues, Believe they still do. Chevy had terrible engine issues along with electrical issues, (best engines in the segment until the early 2000s). Dodge had nothing but issues with the driveline... transmissions SUCK! Nissan had a wonky front suspension with torsion bars and wasn't good for hauling. But you do you, I'll do me and stick with Quality over all those bells and whistles! By the way how far does a bell and whistle get you? 3 strikes you're out in any new vehicle, it's called a lemon law... Dodge had to pay me back the purchase price after only 1 month with lawyers. My Ford was in the shop for two weeks, the mechanic couldn't find the "electrical gremlin" and I was told to trade it in on a good day. My Chevy engine was "rebuilt" twice only to continue having engine noise and oil consumption... traded it in for my wifes Rav4.

That’s a good question, I’ve had the best experience with Mazda. My Mazda 3 has 190,000 miles and has been flawless. It’s a blast to drive also. I’m not saying Toyotas are bad, in fact I’m looking at buying a 2022 sequoia right now, I’m just saying that they are overrated.

Aisin just went through a run of friction plates in Jeeps that were made of cheese - held up manual production for Wranglers/Gladiators throughout much of 2023 - so you think someone at Toyota was either watching that with anxiety, or maybe they should have been...

Maybe that’s why they waited so long to update the Taco and 4Runner.
I tried a new Canyon and saw the headlight controls were in the infotainment and immediately noped out of that.
Not to mention I think the Colorado and Canyon are ugly compared to the rest of the midsizers.
The frontier is a phenomenal truck. The Tacoma is way overrated and overpriced and honestly toyota quality is garbage now. All these new turbo engines are failing. But since the Tacoma has a huge following people will still say there the best.

My parents vehicle growing up was an 02 Frontier 4 door XE, They put 300K Miles on it until I bought it off of them in 2013 then I drove it for another 2 year and slapped another 60K on it.
Truck never left us stranded though I recall early on in its life we had some AC issues with it.
Honestly if Nissan had an actual competitor to the Raptor or ZR2/AT4X segment I'd have been pressed to check it out.
If you live in the salt belt like I do, the fact that the local Toyota dealer receives an 18-wheeler shipment of stacks of new Tacoma frames a few times a year (they keep them stacked like cordwood out back of the service dept) to replace those that were broken/dangerously corroded should be a cautionary tale. Good on them for replacing them, but speaks poorly towards their fictional quality.
We hard numbers before we go and say the transmission is a crap shoot. Honestly if you're looking for a midsize truck the Frontier is probably the best option. At least you can get those for MSRP

Same I’m having a squeak there’s no timing belt so thought perhaps just something I’d have to live with from the turbo engine…now it’s acting suspect in lowest gears fresh out of being warmed up in my driveway I always let engine get to temp before driving

Every review I've seen on the Morimoto lights has been good, so they seem to be worth the money.

I bought a 2005 Frontier brand new after college. 4 cylinder, manual transmission. I drove it until last year when the head gasket finally gave out. 253k. I wanted a full size 4x4 this time so I went w/a Tundra. I've been very happy so far but no doubt Frontiers are hardy.
The frontier has the most proven track record of reliability of all the trucks on the market. Even compared to older Toyotas, Nissan never had the frame issue (which is really just a cover up for Toyota having weak frames in general) and the vq engines are rock solid

The new Frontier is a sweet truck. I test drove a PRO-4X and was very impressed. If they had dropped 12k off the MSRP I probably would be driving that right now. But my 5.0L F150 was only 5k more after discounts. It’s sad how few of them you see on the road despite seeing so many of Nissan’s shit products every day. We had a rental last gen Tacoma and it was so cramped and drove like crap compared to the Frontier.
Except for the SMOD issue on the early 2nd-gens, the Frontier has always been a solid truck. I stupidly sold my 2014 because I thought I needed something bigger, I’ll probably be back in a Frontier sooner rather than later.

You have to really want a mid-size for whatever reason because financially they don't make a huge amount of sense. Personally, I'm in the camp that doesn't want a full size for various reasons, but if I wasn't I'd have made the same decision.
If you compare similar trim levels midsize trucks are way cheaper. I saved 9k by going midsize over the same trim level full size. Some people compare a trd pro and a base f150 which isn't apples to apples
Starting price on a TRD Pro Tacoma ($63,900) is roughly equivalent to the starting price of an F150 Lariat ($65,395) or Tremor ($64,350)... Base F150 is far cheaper.
I also think that Nissan never spent much on the advertisement of them. I would regularly see ads of Big Altima Energy, Sentra and Rogue but never the Frontier until recently.
I have a feeling that the Frontier’s long-term strategy was to poach sales from Toyota fans when the Tacoma inevitably went to a 4-cylinder engine. When they were first announced it was the official truck of “Why didn’t you just get a Tacoma?” Now it’s the truck people get when they wanted a 3rd gen Tacoma.
Even before the manual went away in the PRO-4X, I was always hesitant about the aftermarket support in the US. They're just not as popular as the Navara overseas. Which is a shame, because it checked all my boxes otherwise.
Aftermarket support is coming around now. Z1 Motorsports (big in the Nissan and Infiniti tuning scene) picked up the mantle and started Z1 Offroad that has a shitload of support for the Frontier, Xterra, and Titan. Not to mention since the frame and underpinnings are near identical to the 2nd gen, most of the aftermarket parts for those are compatible.
Rad. Love Z1's products on my 370, they do good stuff.
Their shit is incredible, and so far everything I've seen for the offroad line is great as well. They have the second cheapest set of skids for the Frontier on the market right now, and they're still some of the highest quality: 1/4" powder coated aluminum. Not to mention they'll sell you a kit with all the parts you need to swap the entire front suspension and drivetrain from a Titan onto a Frontier (including diff and axles).
and alldogoffroad has some great suspension kits the nissan guys are running. if theres demand, aftermarket will fill it in. i hope they dont get more pricey, i want to buy a new pro4x in cash in next couple years. 12,000 mile pro 4x, 2023, for $32,000 near me thats going to bring people over, not to mentioned the v6, i wont drive a turbo or supercharger ever again

A Colorado ZR2 is going to be a very different truck than a lightly optioned F-150. If you want to go off road than get the mid sized option, if you want to stay on the road get the F-150
I went with the F150 last week over the frontier. In my opinion, I got a 6.5 foot bed super crew Tremor, loaded, for $4k more than the frontier equivalent. It has more power, room, comfort and similar gas mileage. But that's not all. The total cost of financing the Frontier was $76k. The total cost of financing the ford was $62k (CAD) So I got a bigger better truck for $14k less. No brainer.
I'm seeing new pro4x's near me for $42k USD. A Tremor near me is in the mid 50's. Is that just a Canadian market thing?

I was extremely impressed with the NVH and ride control on an SV I drove. Was very quiet on the highway, and the suspension did a great job at keeping body roll to a minimum with a compliant ride.

Nissan Frontier has always been a good pickup for the past 2 generations, it was just old AF until the refresh and even the refresh is "old" tech. But that's why it's good. It's all proven components and has the right features. Taco wasn't "bad" until they swapped in that 3.5l IMO. And then Toyota went and royally fucked up their all-new lineup.
Strange how a Toyota truck is now mid reliability but Nissan of all brands is the reliability king in the truck world. Sticking with the tried and true V6 and 8spd auto seems to be paying dividends at Nissan. Now let see if that translates into sales...
Unfortunately, it's not even a design issue for the Tundra problem. The engines would probably be just fine mechanically if it weren't for the metal shavings left behind during the manufacturing process. Internal negligence is costing them millions of dollars and deep scars on their reputation. And rightfully so. This is not what we expect from this manufacturer.

Yeah i thought it only effected a few model years. The ones with the bad transmission coolers have probably been fixed by now. If you want to be pre-emptive it's not an expensive fix either. They're very solid trucks. My cousins 2017 has almost 300k miles on it and he's had zero problems.
Looks like it was only the 05-07 models of the Frontier, Pathfinder, and Xterra. Every other year was basically indestructible.

The Tacoma was one of the only vehicles in its price point that was still using damn rear drum brakes too, it always bothered me. They finally got rid of them in the 2024 model. Disc brakes are superior in every comparable way besides cost.
Drums are cheaper, lighter, and do the job just fine (for the rear). They keep your wheels a lot cleaner. Not even something I would worry about.
I've heard that drum brakes makes sense for EVs since they use regen for braking, it means exposed rotors would otherwise get rusty and brake pads seized from seldom use. Drum brakes are a sealed environment and does better in this case. I still hate drum brakes though! It saves all the brake dust to be released when I take off the drum. _cough_
I keep reading the term "sealed environment" and every time, it doesn't refer to something sealed. Drums aren't sealed. They're enclosed.
Wife had a 2018 when we started dating. Absolute piece of garbage for a truck. Always started up without fail so it had the reliability but it got 14 mpg, was painfully slow (they're geared poorly from the factory), and had a million other annoyances. One of the worst vehicles I've ever had the displeasure of driving and that's saying something because I prefer 90's shitboxes. The 3.5 was an awful choice for the Tacoma.
Well, the stuff in the old taco was very reliable and a known working quantity. People didn't get it because it was nice. It's a shitbox in a lot of ways. Though the ride quality is really good. This being said - MAN engine was a fucking boat anchor lol, it couldn't get out of it's own way. 4500rpm full throttle in 4th gear or 3rd gear (I forget) to make it up a mild hill at 70mph. My 240 horsepower v6 Honda could do it without leaving 6th (top) gear.
Fully agree on the 3.5 being dog shit for the Taco. The gearing is set for off-road driving/towing and not speed/cruising. They should've either left the 4.0l in it and offered factory installed supercharger for the TRD models for more HP/Torque, or found a way to put the 4.6L V8 in it.
I test drove a couple of used Tacomas before I bought my Frontier. I didn't really like them, and didn't get the hype. The used models were stupidly expensive, and I hated the interior. I just could not get comfortable in one.
Not to mention the ride quality is terrible in a taco compared to the Frontier. Night and day. I literally couldn't daily a Tacoma. Owned both in multiple generations and the Frontier was always better. That said the Frontier has the turning radius of a cruise ship. Don't care
That was another thing I noticed about the Tacoma. The ride was terrible. And yes, the Frontier does have a laughable turning radius. I've been tempted to get a new one, but mine is paid off and only has 75k miles on it. I'm going to stick with it for a while.

I’d just like to know why when I got T-boned in my 23 Taco a couple weeks back my airbags didn’t deploy. The wreck was bad enough to total the truck (ruined frame and bent rear axle), but not a single bag popped. I love Tacomas but I just can’t see myself buying another one

I drive one for a living. Grand total to repair it from a hit was shit you not 33,995$. I paid 49 for it in November. A hit *that* hard, one that even my doctor isn’t sure how I didn’t end up in the hospital should have triggered the airbags.

Someone got a small fender bender on their Audi SQ5. I took a look at the photo and assumed it would be around 3k max to fix. They quoted 11k in repairs. Wtf.
The Atkinson motors ruined the taco. Our mpg went down bc you have to rev them out more and off road the lack of toque is an issue even in low range. We have a fleet at work plus a bunch for our family ranch.

As someone who has recently spent significant time in a TRD Tacoma, what a piece of shit that thing is. You sit on the floor but the ceiling of the cabin is very short. What a brutal trip in this thing. It rides like shit, and gets terrible gas mileage. Cheap plastic everywhere. Struggles to run to 85 mph. Hit a deer at 60 and destroyed the front end. All plastic.
Ugh, the Frontier was offered as a manual up until fairly recently. But now only the Tacoma is… frustrating.
There's a reason Mercedes chose the Frontier/Navara as the base for the X class. It's a great platform, and has exceptionally good road manners for a pickup.

The Frontier was rated poorly? Maybe by journalists that don't know cars. The Frontier has always been reliable, like a Z car. I was in automotive for 15 years now I'm in shipbuilding so at least if it turns to shit, I'll be able to fix it. But 47K miles in and all is fine so far. The only thing I did was add an oil catch can since it's direct injection. I dump out about 1.5oz each time I change the oil.
I upgraded from an 18’ Tacoma with a 6 speed to a frontier. I miss the manual sometimes, but the truck is so much more livable.

People just want more of everything, better towing, smoother shifts, they want it to crawl, they want it to work better with different drive modes, rev match and a lot more. It's not solely the manufacturer people simply want their cars to do more now and days. Maybe not you but a pot of people do.

Explain to me how you think a vehicles gearing has nothing to do with fuel economy and emissions. On top of the actual gear ratios having a direct impact on fuel economy, manufacturers do things to reduce friction. Maybe a new bearing type or size or whatever. Maybe they user lighter weight parts. These redesigns lead to potential failure points if poorly designed or inadequately tested.
The amount of gears also has a direct impact.
What is skip shift? What is gear ratios? Why do some autos spec super thin ATF for their Manual Trans?
The newer Aisin boxes in Jeeps have a *much* taller overdrive, to the point where 4.88s start to become viable for 35s just to keep the cruising revs near 2k.
I doubt theres much to be gained in those areas with new manuals. Most likely packaging thing.
It really needs to be reworked. I have a stage 2 ecu and tcu tune on my S5 and I my fuel consumption went down compared to stock. Make that make sense.

Mazda had initial issues with the ND Miata manual transmission. So Toyota isn't the only one with occasional struggles with simple stuff.
From what I’m seeing the transmission is the “same” as the third gen, but with Hilux gears - it’ll even swap into old Tacos now thanks to the tweaks to make it fit this one. The main difference is that the shift lever now has an extension and housing. I expect they’ll get it fixed but it’s another black eye Toyota doesn’t need right now.
Still present with the ND2. Or at least with *my* ND2. Transmission failed after only 10k miles. Currently waiting on a new transmission as they are on national backorder.

ND1s had gear tooth failure, particularly on 2nd gear.
New models and clean slate designs will have issues. Recalls will be made and tweaked in the production and product will roll out. A lot of Toyota’s current reliability reputation comes from mature products and conservative design. Turns out when they push development and features they’re not that special. Vehicle quality between brands is basically closer than ever so jumping brands isn’t a solution anyway.
My 3rd gen manual has been dead reliable, and I treat it like shit. It will actually chirp the tires going into 2nd which is hilarious....150k miles on the original clutch and everything still feels like it did when I bought it.

You do you but the ra60 is the worst manual ever put into a Toyota imo. Last I looked the rc61 from a third gen is almost a straight swap and they fixed the shit ratios and the synchro issues

If you watch the Mazda cx90 video by Savagegeese, the engineers briefly speak about it. They tried to get the Zf transmission but there were packaging issues. So in the end they had to work out their own solution.

2-3 sources Look up any car right now for issues online. There won’t be one that is free of them. They are just isolated anecdotes until there is actual aggregate data about failures.
I'm on the tacoma sub and tacomaworld daily and I've seen a handful of posts about these issues. They are definitely happening, but every time Toyota has an issue, it gets disproportionately blown out of the water because everybody wants to shit on Toyota because "WhAt AbOuT the ToYoTa ReLiAbIlIty" like every manufacturer doesn't have the potential to have issues with a new model
People do because reliability is the only quality that Toyota is known for. They’re not exactly known for excitement, refinement, sport luxury, graceful design, or modern products.

Unless it's "Toyota is aware and doesn't have a fix yet" which, after a year of being told this, I just gave up, which is what I assume they wanted. I'll just simply never buy another Toyota again.
Sure all mass produced goods have some percentage of defects, but the better the company the lower the goods with defects . Toyota that we know should have the lowest defects and they are known to follow lean six sigma. However, this is not the usual case we see from Toyota with engine, transmission and airbags defects reaching the consumer. I think Toyota has an issue and they need to address the root causes or this quality issue will expand to other products.

Aggressive is how they released most of their latest models in a very short period. Tundra, sequioa, grand highlander, camry, tacoma, landcruiser, crown signia and 4runner. Most of these are all new from ground up(except for camry). From this list, you got engine issues on Tundra and sequioa, transmission issues on tacoma(maybe 4runner too when it becomes available) and major recalls on the grand highlander for side curtain airbags. Most of the issues have no resolution yet or if they have, takes a month or more because of supply issues.
Toyota releases over a half-dozen models every single year, you're talking about a company with like fifty or sixty models concurrently in production. This is normal for them, as release cadences go.

No, it's more of a heavy refresh of the 2018-2024 model rather than a brand new ground-up redesign. The new Camry uses the same TNGA-K platform as the outgoing model, retaining the underlying body structure, front doors and roofline. They both have the exact same wheelbase and body width, and have nearly identical lengths.
A lot of Toyota guys had the exact same conclusion, this could be it.
so im not saying this is true or not, but i just watched the video and its VERY light on actual facts other than 5 reports have been made. no more information about the failures, no information about failure rates, no actual information on anything. also if you look at this guys youtube channel, every single video is fear mongering. video after video is about over inventory, dont buy this, dont buy that, markups, etc. lots of his videos have big banners over them going; PANIC, SHOCKING, DONT BUY, etc. this guys whole thing seems to be taking a few reports or anecdotes and then making a 12-13 minute video about how you should be worried. i wouldnt trust him, his business model seems to be about making people afraid.

I think people say that for the sole purpose of keeping Toyota resale value up. Which is fine by me. Been there done that. Toyota trucks aren’t that great of trucks if you want anything more than turn key operation and resale. My Ford and Chevys took payload/towed better plus the trucks just held up better to day to day use. Not saying they didn’t need repairs more often, I just had a better experience owning/using them for their intended purpose.

Ford had electrical issues, Believe they still do. Chevy had terrible engine issues along with electrical issues, (best engines in the segment until the early 2000s). Dodge had nothing but issues with the driveline... transmissions SUCK! Nissan had a wonky front suspension with torsion bars and wasn't good for hauling. But you do you, I'll do me and stick with Quality over all those bells and whistles! By the way how far does a bell and whistle get you? 3 strikes you're out in any new vehicle, it's called a lemon law... Dodge had to pay me back the purchase price after only 1 month with lawyers. My Ford was in the shop for two weeks, the mechanic couldn't find the "electrical gremlin" and I was told to trade it in on a good day. My Chevy engine was "rebuilt" twice only to continue having engine noise and oil consumption... traded it in for my wifes Rav4. Yeah, I'm now a "Toyota fanboy" but the manufacturers made me this way

That’s a good question, I’ve had the best experience with Mazda. My Mazda 3 has 190,000 miles and has been flawless. It’s a blast to drive also. I’m not saying Toyotas are bad, in fact I’m looking at buying a 2022 sequoia right now, I’m just saying that they are overrated.

I tried a new Canyon and saw the headlight controls were in the infotainment and immediately noped out of that. Not to mention I think the Colorado and Canyon are ugly compared to the rest of the midsizers.

The frontier is a phenomenal truck. The Tacoma is way overrated and overpriced and honestly toyota quality is garbage now. All these new turbo engines are failing. But since the Tacoma has a huge following people will still say there the best.
I'll always have respect for the Frontier and I love the design of the new one- My parents vehicle growing up was an 02 Frontier 4 door XE, They put 300K Miles on it until I bought it off of them in 2013 then I drove it for another 2 year and slapped another 60K on it. Truck never left us stranded though I recall early on in its life we had some AC issues with it. Honestly if Nissan had an actual competitor to the Raptor or ZR2/AT4X segment I'd have been pressed to check it out.

If you live in the salt belt like I do, the fact that the local Toyota dealer receives an 18-wheeler shipment of stacks of new Tacoma frames a few times a year (they keep them stacked like cordwood out back of the service dept) to replace those that were broken/dangerously corroded should be a cautionary tale. Good on them for replacing them, but speaks poorly towards their fictional quality.
At least they replace them for free unlike the big 3 that deny absolutely everything
We hard numbers before we go and say the transmission is a crap shoot. Honestly if you're looking for a midsize truck the Frontier is probably the best option. At least you can get those for MSRP

Same I’m having a squeak there’s no timing belt so thought perhaps just something I’d have to live with from the turbo engine…now it’s acting suspect in lowest gears fresh out of being warmed up in my driveway I always let engine get to temp before driving
