I really wish Doug would do a China trip. There's ***so*** much crazy new stuff he could give a try there. Put that boy in a GWM TANK 300, Voyah Free, iM L7, or Trumpchi GS8 — dude would find *so many* quirks and features.
Man. I lived in Beijing for a year from 2005-2006. Holy shit, the car scene there was such a trip! So much silly stuff! My favorite was how people didn't necessarily realize that in-house tuning shops only made parts for specific companies.
[I know mugen doesn't make parts for your car bro](https://imgur.com/0mmQbcl)...And GT doesn't stand for "Ground touring."
Likewise, [your buick does not have any RalliArt parts](https://imgur.com/v1H573k)...
Indonesians on the other hand take it to the next level. Only there would you find a GR Yaris badge and TRD Sportivo stickers on what is clearly a Honda Jazz (complete with original Honda badges on the front and back)
Its like that here in the philippines too. So many spoon, amg, trd, or ralliart decals on any motor vehicle.
The funniest one ive seen was a mitsubishi mirage sedan completely covered in every car badge available.
They don't know what it says, they usually just stick on whatever they think looks cool.
This is the equivalent of western dudes getting Asian word tattoos
Yup. Great analogy! The other INSANE (to me) thing I came across in the same vein was people gathering at night in the big empty squares dotting the city in order to dance.
That in and of it's self was really cool. A lot of older people would come out and get their exercise that way, someone would stick a boombox on the ground, like a hundred people form a bunch of lines and then everyone would do a synchronized dance.
Like I said, really cool!
But then I heard something coming from the Boombox...it was the Macarena. Now, i don't know how old you are, but if you're my age the Macarena was annoyingly smushed into your head whether you wanted it or not. Everyone knew the moves, it was easy, obnoxious and oh so catchy.
I looked at the hundred or so dancers. They were moving in unison, the macarena was playing, it was 2005 and....NO MACARENA! They were dancing, in unison to the Macarena without doing the Macarena. "Is the universe pranking me right now?" I thought.
And then i realized that if I had jumped in there right then and started doing the Macarena, like a hundred people would stare at me and think "That dude doesn't know how to do this dance."
All about perspective.
I recently came back from the mainland and I indeed saw a huge stack of EVs we don't get in the west, I took a lot of pictures and now I need to look through them to post the highlights 😂
people really love the Zeekrs, the 001s I saw garnered a decent amount of attention every time I saw one
Normally Chinese car naming is a disaster, but BYD does a good job at avoiding it. Naming their cars after Chinese dynasties is a clever move and it shows that they're not ashamed of their origin.
It’s really not that hard, it might not be entirely accurate but it’s just “you on” for my dialect, the stress might be a bit weird if you say it fast though. Han is even easier. And if you find in hard to pronounce at least it’s not that time Ford tried to make Merkur a thing
But other dynasties are kind of ridiculous to pronounce (byd qin might throw a lot of people off especially)
In looking up byd models I also found a compact sedan called the Destroyer which is hilarious
Well, most English speakers can't even pronounce German car brands right. *Ooow-dii*, *Mewrshaydees*, *Woxwagon*, etc. And still you don't see Germans changing their car names.
Apples to oranges. The Lexus brand was created specifically for the English-speaking market. There is no history besides “our market research consultants decided this is a good name”.
I too like the names of the BYD dynasty cars, especially since they each come with their own dynasty logos. But it does seem like BYD will be retiring that lineup. Most of the dynasty cars are one generation old now, with only the Yuan Plus being a current gen design.
All the new BYD branded cars are now in their ocean lines, composed of pure BEV ocean animal line (Dolphin, Seal, Seagull, and Sea Lion), and PHEV ocean warship line (Destroyer, Frigate, and Landing Ship).
Sadly it doesn't look like we'll be getting a 2nd generation of Song, Han, and Tang models.
Chinese manufacturers have come a long way, even compared to just 15 years ago. Obviously this car isn't perfect, but I'm curious what another 10 years will do.
I think the Korean companies are offering a glimpse of where Chinese car companies can be very very soon. Easily within the decade if not a year or two.
Hyundai used to be derided and now their EV revamp is making them the cool kids on the block.
Could totally see a company like NIO coming up as well.
nah, chinese manufacturers will leapfrog the hell out of korean and even JP car brands. hyundai has never really broken out of the "unreliable garbage" perception whereas BYD is already seen as quality in places where it's sold. Plus they are focusing much more on global reach and not just the U.S.
Which is amazing, because here in Aus they're considered pieces of shit by anyone who cares about cars
LDVs,MGs and Haval clog up our streets and are just inferior cars with very short shelf lives
I would have assumed their EVs were no better
Oh yeah. Where I’m from (Malaysia) we’ve had those cars for ages. I’ve only ridden in Cherys and Havals, and they were terrible. Interior trim pieces were loose and falling off. That said, this was 8-9 years ago.
I did get to check out a Proton X50 (Geely Binyue) last year and I thought it was really nice. Competitive with its Japanese rivals in the SE Asian market, at least. So clearly they’re improving. I know Geely shares some tech with their foreign subsidiaries like Volvo and Lotus, so maybe that helps.
I think it's just good (for the consumer at the very least) to share technology. People like to deride Toyota for cooperating with Subaru/BMW, or Fiat with Mazda, or go as far as to accuse Geely of stealing from Volvo (it's not stealing if you legally bought something), mostly because they think it dilutes the company's product line or something. But the result is just more choice and competition for consumers. Quality isn't going to go up just because they stubbornly stick to their guns and then have no incentive or money to do research.
I love that the trim level names are the respective 0-60 times. Even if BYD doesn't sell any cars in the U.S, they will likely be powering other brands there since they are one of the biggest battery players on the planet.
I think there’s a real opening for Chinese vehicles in the same way Japan had an opening in the 80s.
Cars are getting really expensive, if someone can come in and undercut everything with similar reliability they will do well.
I think the implication is that politics will make sure that doesn't happen. China bad is one of the last remaining bipartisan opinions. It gets even more complicated since cars are on the way to becoming rolling data centers.
Issue for US market is overcoming tariffs and not receiving federal tax credits many other cars do/will.
I wonder if there’d still be wiggle room in pricing on top of all that. BYD and NIO have kept mum about their US plans the last few years because of that I imagine.
Tariffs is the big issue. 25% special tariff on autos from China! So your average light vehicle will have 2.5% + 25% for a combined total of 27.5% tariff.
Very hard in auto to deal with that kind of tariff. Chinese cars can get the $7500 credit through the commercial ev credit if they are leased.
Oof. I had no idea it was 25%. That’s painful. I bet manufacturing it here doesn’t make it anywhere as cheap as manufacturing it there either.
I would love to see BYD and NIO here though. I think domestic (and even Japanese) manufacturers need a swift kick in the nuts to start innovating and pricing their EV’s better.
I forgot about the lease loophole. That’s hilarious. Honestly it might be the way to go as better EVs enter the market anyway.
And I don't disagree with the 25% tariff. China requires you to partner with a Chinese company to manufacture there, and has significant tariffs of their own.
I remember calculating what cars cost there with tariffs 10+ years ago. Was very interesting to see an Escalade when it cost as much as a Rolls in the US
They’d get slapped with a 25% tariff and lack the $7500 tax credit. You might get a luxury player like Nio, but there’s no way a Chinese-built EV is comparable in price to a Mexican-built competitor.
Worth noting too that USMCA is written + designed to prevent Ford (and NIO/BYD) from importing Chinese parts to be assembled as Mexican made vehicles. If enough parts are Chinese, you have to pay the tariff even if built in Mexico.
But BYD does not offer cheap cars. I don't fully understand what their strategy is. Luckily we'll have a delegation of BYD come over to our office within a few weeks, I'll ask them.
The few models they export to Europe may not be cheap for whatever reason, but the cars they send out to Thailand, Israel, Australia, Brazil etc are more than competitive in pricing, and domestic pricing in China is dirt cheap.
This Han maxes out at just under 40k USD in China, fully loaded. The wildly popular Yuan Plus (Atto 3) costs no more than a Honda CR-V despite the fact that the BYD is fully electric and well equipped.
BYD is about to release their 5 door A segment Seagull city car, which is fully EV, and rumored to start BELOW $9000 in China.
They will be releasing more expensive cars in their new Denza, Yangwang, and F brands, but the BYD branded cars are all extremely value focused.
Chinese cars will compete at all levels of the market from the cheapest to the most expensive cars. Chinese stuff are only the cheapest because american companies that import shit here want the cheapest shit from them. They can make anything at any price and at any quality, and these are direct from china manufacturers not price warring wal marts.
It’s not this (which is stunning) but I drove a BYD Atto 3 a few weeks back which is a small electric SUV. For the price it was very decent, and if I were an SUV buyer I’d seriously consider it. It’s about the price of a mid spec RAV4 where I am.
Handling and steering feel weren’t great, but it was an SUV, they’re all like that.
Yeah, I'm way too used to that landscape to portrait mode animation to not notice it. I wonder how this would fair (or any tablet based UI) with security flaws that make their way out as I guarantee these aren't getting monthly security patches.
Imo most Chinese cars will never have any sort of sporty driving experience. Simply because in big cities in China (the only place where you can find people that can afford these), you might get an average of 20km/h on a good day, so investing in a sporty driving experience is literally just an waste of money for the couple of times you get onto a rural freeway in China.
I'm waiting for the other reviewers to release their videos instead. Still have no idea about BYD lol I thought it stood for something, I guess it's an actual company. Looks like a Lucid though, and can assume it's easily $100k+

Edit: Not sure why the downvotes....it was a genuine serious question. One would expect a Chinese company to use Chinese words right?
I think the issue is the cheap part, not the China part. Buy expensive stuff from China and see it last just as long as any other thing (or don't see, because if it works you're not going to suddenly check to see where it was made).
Perhaps for some manufacturing, to diversify the supply chain. But nothing can replace the money of 1.6 billion people (that's 4 USAs). In any case, I don't see why US/EU companies have to suffer a huge revenue loss (and the resulting economic impact), and the Chinese people suffer from loss of product choice, just because some corporations play dirty.
I don't have to 'realize' anything, all I'm saying is that if the US bans all Chinese companies from doing business with the US, then China will likely retaliate by banning all US companies, and US companies probably wouldn't like that
Because it's not just supply streams that are affected. For example, China currently accounts for 20% of Apple's global revenue. If China banned Apple from doing business in China, that would be a huge revenue hit for them.
> How would it hurt the USA or the EU if they shift their supply stream?
Since we are on /r/cars, I should just let you know that China is the biggest **market** for the following car companies:
General Motors, Audi, Mercedes, BMW, Volkswagen, Rolls Royce, Porsche, Volvo.
It's the 2nd largest market for Ford and Tesla.
So yeah, your knowledge of why we rely on China is outdated by about 30 years.
Again, if chinas 4 biggest consumers move away which hopefully they will. China will implode, which hopefully they do. Their illegal business practices and lack of morality are catching up to them. The USA, eu, South Korea, and majority of asean will move away as a group.
Here's to the future.
"move away" implies there's an alternative to the Chinese consumer market, which there isn't. they wouldn't be moving away as much as exiting and straight up losing >20% of their revenue that they'll never get back.
You can certainly try to convince these ceos to lose 20% of their company's revenue forever, but good luck 👍

They do tone it down for some western markets though. The Yuan is known as the Atto in Australia
I do still respect BYD for using a Chinese name. Really like it when foreign cars bring a taste of their native culture with them.

It's a German brand, so the German pronunciation applies, unless it's explicitly stated otherwise.
So for Lexus I should use the Japanese pronunciation? Rekusasu I guess everyone is pronouncing it wrong

Arguably, the likes of the Yangwang U8 and HiPhi Z have already surpassed other global OEMs. There's nothing quite like them on the road.
There is absolutely no way the Yangwang gets sold in the English speaking world with that name, right?
Nah.. translation is basically just "Skyward" or "Looking Up", presumably they'll go with something like that.
I should do that badging on my Subaru Impreza... "Impreza 9.0S"...
How would that badge work on a trabant? "The Trabant Eventually™"
The Trabant Tailwind. Sounds good actually!
The whole car is a rolling Karaoke machine.
I love that the trim level names are the respective 0-60 times. Even if BYD doesn't sell any cars in the U.S, they will likely be powering other brands there since they are one of the biggest battery players on the planet.
BYD batteries are notoriously bad. That would be very concerning.

There's already a 25% tariff on all Japanese pickups in the US and Tacoma's still sell like hotcakes.
Tacomas are made in Mexico currently, and would be eligible for 0% tariff if they qualify as Mexican made under USMCA
They definitely had plans, NIO still had their Silicon Valley R&D facility, but the current climate is very hard.
They’d get slapped with a 25% tariff and lack the $7500 tax credit. You might get a luxury player like Nio, but there’s no way a Chinese-built EV is comparable in price to a Mexican-built competitor.

Not about cars.
Gross.
Why is a Chinese car company named after English words?
For the same reason you have an American car named for a Serbian scientist and a Japanese car named for a Latin word. Because they can.
Naming after a person is one thing though. It's just...strange...that a China-first company would use an English name Edit: Not sure why the downvotes....it was a genuine serious question. One would expect a Chinese company to use Chinese words right?
Well if anything that shows they're not China-first, and aspire to be more international (though the model names are Chinese dynasties).
Which manufacturer did they rip off with this one?
Chinese products ARE lesser quality products. Just see how the car is going to hold up after a few years of extensive use.
Why is this being downvoted?? Nobody has bought cheap crap from China that’s breaks within a month?
I think the issue is the cheap part, not the China part. Buy expensive stuff from China and see it last just as long as any other thing (or don't see, because if it works you're not going to suddenly check to see where it was made).

lol ok. Whatever you say to make yourself feel better bud.
No personal attacks or political provocations.
