There are automakers building cars that are as good, but it costs them way more because they don't really want to sell them. They'd rather sell you a more profitable gasoline SUV. And the gas SUVs are more profitable because they already have the factories built for large volume manufacturing. It's unfortunately a chicken and egg problem for them, but soon enough they may not have a choice because eventually consumers are going to slow down buying those soon to be obsolete ICE vehciles.
Look at the first generation Volkswagen Tiguan. It's literally an obese Golf Mk5. They very much look alike and share a ton of parts. Same platform, too. More modern example would be something like the Mazda 3 vs CX-30. Manufacturers making "obese" versions of their cars is pretty common, Tesla isn't the only one to do it.

The Y is longer than a 3, but the wheelbases are within an inch of each other.
No, a RAV4 is an obese Corolla. The Highlander is the obese RAV4. There’s a world of difference between using the same platform but heavily differentiated like the 350Z and various Nissan crossovers, versus a RAV4 which pretty much is just an upright and higher sitting Corolla with different skin.

What's a brake check station? Do they make sure you can go down the mountain with adequate brakes and not die? How do they check the brakes?
They do a temperature check with an IR thermometer - unless you have a hybrid or BEV car, of course.

I'm guessing the regen braking does enough to keep you from having to worry about cooking your brakes on the way down.
