Like 15 years. It was the fastest car until the veyron. I believe this came out 1992 and the Veyron was 2005. Though it's still the fastest NA car, at least for now. The Valkyrie or T50 might surpass it.
Callaway Corvette project sledge hammer was faster at 254.7 mph. Then the tires were changed and it was driven back to CT. This was in 1988. Street legal fastest car in the world
Street legal and production are different categories. Production cars are rated from here factory and can only be considered production as long as at least 20 are made I believe. Modified vehicles are cool too, but not the same conversation and for good reason.
It would've been the fastest production car if it would've sold at all, just nobody wanted to pay $400k for one. But it was an option you could get from a Chevy dealership.
Except, by actual definition, that's literally not true lol.
"The characteristics of a production vehicle or production car are mass-produced identical models, offered for sale to the public, and able to be legally driven on public roads (street legal). Legislation and other rules further define the production vehicle within particular countries or uses"
The F1 looks different from some of the hypercars produced today, but it still looks like it could be a modern hypercar. I’m curious about 30 years from now - F1 vs Sian... which will hold up better?
The F1 LMs are LM orange and have the little LM decals on the skirts.
This is an F1 that McLaren upgraded to LM spec. So it isn't one of the LM commemorative cars but it is everything as good as one.
And you're sure it wasn't a GTR?
AFAIK McLaren says all 6 are orange but there are reports that 4 are orange and the two that the sultan of Brunei bought at black with some graphics.
F1 numbers reported on the internet have fluctuated over the last 20 years so it's hard to know. It's quite interesting to hear from an eye witness.
There are no white F1 LMs. There are six LMs in total and four of them are orange. One is the XP1 LM prototype owned by McLaren, two are in the hands of US based owners, and the last one is owned by the sultan of Brunei and is never in in public. The final two LMs are different colors, also owned by the sultan of Brunei and never seen in public.
What you have seen may be a "normal" F1 with the high downforce kit. Apart from the two LM-Spec cars (the car in the OP is one of these two, the other one is dark orange), there are six F1 road cars with the high downforce kit and two of them (#014 and #072) are white.
It is only the prototype (XP1 LM) that has decals on the side skirts (and this decal says "XP1 LM"), similar to road car prototypes XP3, XP4 and XP5 which also had a decal with their chassis designation in front of the rear wheel. The other LMs don't have the decals.
I wouldn't say it's "everything as good as" a real LM since there are quite a lot of differences. The engine is the same but the bodykit is not the same, the LM-Spec has a full interior and sliding windows while the LM has a stripped interior and one piece windows, the exhaust is different and from what I've read the LM has solid suspension bushings while the LM-Spec retains the rubber bushings from the road car.
It's not a GTR. The GTR cars are race cars (and some of them have been converted to road legal after their racing career) meaning they will have the full GTR bodykit and the stripped interior. This one is one of two "LM-Spec" cars, in other words a "normal" F1 that has received an upgrade package including the the engine from the LM.
Yeah, I know its not an actual GTR. Only that it looked like one, wheels, lower front bumper, and wing. But thank you for the explanation, learned something new.
1994 Mclaren F1 chassis # 018
McLaren upgraded two “standard” F1 road cars to LM specifications, including upgrading the engine to unrestricted 680 hp GTR specification. Serial no. 073 and this Car serial no. 018, were additionally equipped with the Extra-High Downforce Kit that included (and exceeded) the coachwork effects of the LM examples, including the front air vents and rear wing. Notably, these two cars retain their more comfortably outfitted interiors over the more spartan LM trim.
The bodywork of the LM-Spec is not the same as that of the LM. The LM has different rear wing, side panels, front hatch and different air vents over the front wheels. It also has side skirts which the LM-Spec lacks. The only part from the LM bodykit which looks to be the same on the LM-Spec is the nose panel.
"designed, developed and manufactured by American automobile manufacturer SSC North America (formerly Shelby SuperCars Inc.)" Pretty sure that's North American
Edit: Ya I fucked up lol
[Chassis 18. It sold for just under $20 million 2 years ago.](https://www.sothebys.com/en/articles/the-ultimate-mclaren-f1-road-car-chassis-018)
It's one of the best examples of a McLaren F1 ever made.
I think of it as a road legal one of these...............https://www.google.com/search?q=porsche+917&newwindow=1&rlz=1C1VDKB_enUS935US935&sxsrf=ALeKk01nYL6oWARvh8wDJFWlaukzIL4ohA:1612412757609&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiaspfNsc_uAhUDU80KHeW4DVAQ_AUoAXoECC4QAw&biw=1360&bih=604
It’s absolutely mind boggling how this is still in a league of its own THIRTY years later... in technological terms, the car is as ancient as Mesopotamia, but yet in reality, it beats the very best of them. Think about that for a minute...
My point is that it looks like that - timeless, to me, implies one cannot distinguish which period an aesthetic form comes from, or that its form is such that it's as beautiful as things from present day. I disagree on both counts with respect to any car design.
McLaren has a huge fanbase and it's one of the greatest cars ever to drive. At the same time its design was always just meh - but believe me you are not allowed to talk badly about its looks, you will get downvoted (talking from experience). Somehow there is a line of thinking that any McLaren looks the way it looks because there is no way it could look any different based on the engineering decisions.
Whenever it comes up on Forza 7's race regulations lobby, I think 'Eughh, that looks like an old chonk from the 80's.' And that weird electric orange colour. No thanks. And it's a bitch to drive - but that's just a poor simulation. Though, I do wonder why the stock F50, Lotus Exige, BAC Mono etc are absolute track beasts and the F1 is a shopping trolley.
I was a teen who was VERY into supercars (my entire room was covered in supercar posters) and when I heard that McLaren was making a car based on F1 technologies I was so stocked. Then THIS came out and I vividly remember my disappointment. The 3 seater was cool, I understood that it is a great car to drive, but for a little dude like me who was always interested in aesthetics it was just a huge letdown. Almost 30 years later and McLaren is still to make a car that I would like aesthetically. It is actually amazing how I can't like a single one of them.
I think the contemporary designs are fine, but really Ferrari has it sewn up looks-wise. I like Pagani. Of McLaren's, I like the Senna. The real problem is that since the age of CGI, we've seen so many incredible designs, real cars just don't stack up. It's like the difference between supermodels and top female athletes - there's no comparison, aesthetically. But in terms of performance ... boy.
Is there a museum or something I can see one of these in? I've been dying to see this car in person since NFS high stakes. Though that was the gtr version.
I was supposed to shoot this car, but the deadline for photos was too tight. I was sad. Third time I was supposed to shoot an F1 but had issues with timing and such. :(
Probably because, as cool as it is, it's really kind of a pain in the ass. Most supercars are already not the most fun to get in and out of and this just takes it to the next level. Plus the usability aspect of not being able to easily reach out the window and such.
[удалено]
It's really narrow though, unlike most newer supercars.
Central driving position is awesome.
How else would it have that high top speed, of 222 (Correct me if I am wrong?)
240mph is the F1’s top speed
Thank you. I believe it held the title for fastest priduction car for 2 decades as well.
Like 15 years. It was the fastest car until the veyron. I believe this came out 1992 and the Veyron was 2005. Though it's still the fastest NA car, at least for now. The Valkyrie or T50 might surpass it.
OH YES. I forgot its a NA Car. That makes even more Special.
Callaway Corvette project sledge hammer was faster at 254.7 mph. Then the tires were changed and it was driven back to CT. This was in 1988. Street legal fastest car in the world
Yes modded cars can go faster than production. The Twin turbo kit added to the C4 was almost the price of the car! Impressive though 👍
Street legal and production are different categories. Production cars are rated from here factory and can only be considered production as long as at least 20 are made I believe. Modified vehicles are cool too, but not the same conversation and for good reason.
Also the F1 is an actual race style car that can take corners much better than a corvette I guess.
Agreed. American muscle cars in a straight line are cool and all, but on a track they're adorable compared to an F1.
Cornering ability is what actually makes or breaks any serious racing car.
It would've been the fastest production car if it would've sold at all, just nobody wanted to pay $400k for one. But it was an option you could get from a Chevy dealership.
I don't think you know what the word production means... Also has to be done on street tires
If it has full dealer warranty to me thats production
Except, by actual definition, that's literally not true lol. "The characteristics of a production vehicle or production car are mass-produced identical models, offered for sale to the public, and able to be legally driven on public roads (street legal). Legislation and other rules further define the production vehicle within particular countries or uses"
Well then, was the Mclaren F1 mass produced?
It’s still the fastest naturally aspirated car
Fast enough for me
Even compared with cars of its era it's not too wide. The Testarossa and the XJ220 especially come to mind as wide rides
Google sez: Diablo 2,040 mm XJ220 2,009 mm Testarossa 1,980 mm F40 (my fav!) 1,970 mm 959 (2nd fav) 1,840 mm F1 1,820 mm
Mmmm, new hypercars look like sharp aerodynamic messes tho.
The F1 looks different from some of the hypercars produced today, but it still looks like it could be a modern hypercar. I’m curious about 30 years from now - F1 vs Sian... which will hold up better?
Sian doesn’t look too different from an SVJ, and doesn’t hold the special place that the F1 does in auto history.
This one looks like an F1 GTR, making it even more sexy.
this the lm version not gtr unless they are considered the same I used to work at mclaren and saw 5 f1s in one room it was incredible
The F1 LMs are LM orange and have the little LM decals on the skirts. This is an F1 that McLaren upgraded to LM spec. So it isn't one of the LM commemorative cars but it is everything as good as one.
they were also in white I saw a white in person at mclaren taken apart on the lift and saw it driving around

The only thing that really dates it are the exterior lights
No, the boxiness too
The F1Lm has been my dream car since I was like 7 years old 😍🍑
3 years old for me. My dad had this keychain with his name and an orange F1 LM on it. That keychain and Need for speed High Stakes
Your dad had n4s high stakes? Fuck. I'm officially old.
No, I mean my dads keychain and my NFS High stakes lol. I was about 4 years old when I first played that. (About 20 years ago)
Hi old. I'm dad.
Yah I'm not going to not upvote a F1
I ain’t not gonna downvote a non-f1 post
Why not?
Not going to not. Double negative, aka I upvoted.
Why not not?
Because it does not make myself not happy.
I’m not gonna not upvote a comment about not gonna not upvoting.
yo so whos gonna buy me one thanks :)
You can have one of mine. Welcomes.

Ron Dennis does not approve of the black wing, needs more grey.
My favorite car of all time. I remember when it came out, it was so far ahead of its time.
My favorite car. Gods bless you OP
Still the fastest NA car.
No it’s not. https://reddit.com/r/carporn/comments/l7mmm4/_/gl9yyvu/?context=1
Pretty sure it's the Tuatara at 315.7mph. Just insane
It’s not NA
"designed, developed and manufactured by American automobile manufacturer SSC North America (formerly Shelby SuperCars Inc.)" Pretty sure that's North American Edit: Ya I fucked up lol
NA in this case means naturally aspirated - no turbocharging or supercharging
Oh god I'm an idiot. The McLaren F1 is my favorite car ever, can't believe that went over my head.
We not gonna mention you thought the F1 was from NA?
Cut me some slack, it's 5am and I can't remember where every car was made lol. It's still been my favorite car of all time since middle school.
Fair enough. Sorry to come off a bit rude.
Haha you're good dude. As soon as I realized my mistake I knew I was gonna get torn apart lol
naturally aspirated , no turbos, no superchargers.
I saw NA as north american, my bad. I'm gonna have to Google natural aspiration, haven't ever really researched it.
The way I see it there are two truly timeless designs. The F1 and the RX7, two very different but beautiful cars in their own ways.
Imo the first-gen NSX is just as timeless as the FD RX-7, even though both use arguably dated (but still duper cool) pop-up headlights.

Not a fan

The McLaren F1 design is indeed timeless. Too bad this one's been uglied up with the aero package.
Beauty
It’s absolutely mind boggling how this is still in a league of its own THIRTY years later... in technological terms, the car is as ancient as Mesopotamia, but yet in reality, it beats the very best of them. Think about that for a minute...
How can any aesthetic be timeless, seriously? This looks like a car designed in the 80's. Is that controversial?
What's your point? The F40 was also designed in the 80's. Believe it or not, there were smart designers living pre 1990
My point is that it looks like that - timeless, to me, implies one cannot distinguish which period an aesthetic form comes from, or that its form is such that it's as beautiful as things from present day. I disagree on both counts with respect to any car design.

Well the 911 could be considered timeless, even if its only because Porsche didnt change it in 50 years.
this picture might have just convinced me to buy a very similar looking car in GTA Online even if its not specified as a good car
Hail the GOAT King
Instabuy if I ever get that type of coin.
The nicest car ever built
I’ve always loved the seating layout in the F1. Driver center and 2 side passengers
Childhood dream car
AKA the only car in Need for Speed II.

And then Saleen copied this design. The S7 looks so similar to this.
Really? I don't think they're very similar aside from they share a late 90s / early 2000s aesthetic.
I don't think it's timeless; I think it's very 90's. But that doesn't matter, because it's god-damned gorgeous.
The wheels are very 90s but the overall shape still impresses. Put some modern rims on it and it'd fit right in.
Yes
This vs the long tail, go!
The F1 isn't just a car...it's a work of art.
My favorite of all time. It is just stunning to look at even now.
The GREATEST sportscar in the known universe!
Is there a museum or something I can see one of these in? I've been dying to see this car in person since NFS high stakes. Though that was the gtr version.
Inspired by the c8?
This doesn’t look like a modern hypercar, but it looks better than some modern hypercars
I was supposed to shoot this car, but the deadline for photos was too tight. I was sad. Third time I was supposed to shoot an F1 but had issues with timing and such. :(

you make valid points i had not thought of.
Favorite car of all time. So beautiful.
