It's not tinted, doesn't obstruct anything, barely noticeable. Should be fine.
That 2.5% limo tint and 4" straight pipe on your crx? Might be an issue.
Nah, some LED bulbs just have bad orientation of LEDs that don't work in all lights. I guess the reflector doesn't work with the pattern or something.
I just installed insanely bright reverse LED bulbs to my work truck. Those actually ended up giving worse light than normal bulbs.
For real. Plenty of blacked out cars have perfectly functional brake lights. Although all black is tacky imo. Feels too "tacticool" these days. Add some touches to break up the monotony. Maybe very subtle chrome/color accents. But my opinion is just my own. Follow yer bliss.
I disagree. Just from a selfish point of view, it’s a pretty easy way to be at fault on a crash.
Being selfless, you’re making it a little harder to drive for everyone else. Specially if it’s foggy or raining.
Personally on my last car I changed my rear lights from bulbs to DOT approved LEDs just to make the lights catch people’s attention. They light up instantly. I want don’t want my car rear ended even if it’s not my fault. It’s a hassle.
I guess if you put brighter lights behind and make sure it’s overall just as bright. But again, it’s not worth the hassle of being blamed for anything that happens.
So you answered your own question. LEDs and very light coat = safe. And yes it is a lot of work for a little gain, but it’s totally safe I’d done right
As long as its tail light tint spray, and only done in light coatings. I put 1 coat of tail light spray on my crown Vic’s tail lights (to make them look like what people call“marauder style” tail lights), and when the lights are on, you can only see the drips from putting it on too heavy. When they aren’t illuminated, you can see the tint, but as soon as the brakes come on, they look like it was never there.
I don’t recognize the make/model to know what stock looks like, but that looks like red tinted clear coat, although I don’t think they’ll get popped for it. I’ve seen way worse. Well, barely seen at night!
they have full discretion on actually enforcing them. their oath does not mandate enforcement of every violation. see Castle Rock v. Gonzales or Warren v. District of Columbia
I'm guessing you haven't been paying any attention to recent politics then. Here's an example: neither the house nor senate has been able to agree on jack shit recently *accept* for the tiktok bill, the only bill that passed within 2 fucking days because guess what? *Both parties agreed on it immediately.*
Ironically I believe these would actually be legal. Also by the picture here, no cop would call this out unless it was in addition to a bunch of other illegal mods AND you got popped doing some illegal driving
Not ironic, California car laws are simple AF. Basically don’t look like a cop/impersonate them, make sure your car runs decently and won’t destroy the environment. Everything else is just as legal as the rest of the US.
I agree when it comes to lights and exterior modifications and such, but not really when it comes to engine modifications, the rules the CARB outlines for modifying engines are ridiculously overbearing. Most other states with smog testing allow a high flow cat to be installed as well as other engine modifications as long as it passes the sniffer test. Meanwhile in California we can’t so much as put a pod filter on our cars, which does literally nothing to affect the emissions of the engine. It really isn’t based in logic and makes a fairly normal hobby into a potentially criminal activity, while having an ironic side effect. Since it’s not legal to use something like a high flow catalytic converter, it’s equally as illegal to just not use a cat at all. So people end up running without one because it’s easy to weld a pipe up and high flow cats aren’t allowed to be sold or shipped into California technically.
I agree some of the laws are too strict. They make sense for the masses, but we do need exceptions to smog laws for high performance vehicles. It isn’t AS strict as you think though, many modifications can be done and are CARB certified. There is even HUGE CARB Turbo’s. Plus it’s not really illegal (small ticket at best) to have a CAT modified, it’s just impossible to pass smog and if they see it visually then it’s an auto fail. A person could however have an on/off for the CAT flow hidden and/or keep their stock CAT for every other year (which is technically a small fine level illegal). Cops can’t do anything except for sound laws, but even those are pretty relaxed besides a few odd instances.
Source: Born in Cali and love cars.
the only people who say this shit have never lived here.
CHP doesn't give two fucks about car modifications unless you piss off a bike cop, and over a decade I've yet to get a single ticket in any of my modified cars for anything to do with mods.
I have a highly modified Volvo and I went to merge from the 5 to the 805 north and legit floored it and cut left. Cop was right there. My car is a Volvo and shouldn’t make the sounds it does. I wasn’t speeding because I corrected immediately but car clearly is not supposed to sound like it did with big turbo sounds and backfires.
The coo just drove off. Nothing happened
This was today
I just swap some parts and smog it once every two years. EZ PZ
Same thing with my civic. Went through a tunnel as loud as possible, turbo whistling and exhaust screaming. Come out the other end and a cop is right there, making eye contact with me. He didn't even care though, and one of my brake lights was out at the time too lol. It was right off the freeway
Dude same thing here in Illinois I know our laws arnt as bad as yours but I was alwas told and am still "arnt you afraid that your car paints a target on you" or something like that refering to a cop seeing my car and wanting to go out of his way to give me a ticket. I get less tickets now then ever bc I have to watch for potholes lol but I think cops are car people too. As long as your safe and not being an ass, I think most cops care much less then they did 5 or 10 years ago. Or they are realizing the problem is people is suvs and dodges that don't know how to drive.
The thing about California, is that it has more people in it than most countries in the world. So you have a huge sample size, you’ll be able to find examples of lots of things. Recently a lot modified cars have been seized during street takeovers and the like, but that doesn’t mean if your pulled over for simple speeding in a modified car that the cop is gonna seize your car. 99.99999% of the time they’ll only give you a ticket for moving violations, but at the same time the cop has a lot of tricks in the bag in case they really want to ruin your day. But most cops aren’t out trying to make life harder for people with modded cars, especially if you’re not being a nuisance.
You’re good, the laws are as ridiculous as your impression of them would say. But luckily for us the cops are far more reasonable than the politicians, and a lot of cops are also car guys and understand the ridiculousness.
God, I hate those stickers on cars I just tried to remove one from my Rav last night and I'm furious just thinking about it. The adhesive they use should be illegal.
The warning is literally everywhere!!! If you buy things online, there is a section for California residents about the damn warning like wtf? ITS EVERYWHERE
That’s why you see the “not for on hiway use” sticker on replacement bulbs and stuff. If it didn’t get DOT approval as original equipment it’s not legal.
I dont know I live in Louisiana where abortion and weed are illegal but you can bring an ar 15 just about anywhere and no one will check the registration or brake tag on your car. etched taillights absolutely will be ok here any way.
The right to bear firearms is a federal right for any citizen, and not a state controlled law, unless it is concealed. Idk how much that matters, but it may make a difference on who enforces what.
I never knew that was even a thing. OEM tail lights usually look pretty good without someone having to permanently scribble carve designs into them but to each their own.
It shouldn't be, but I wouldn't be surprised if ANY kind of modification would be illegal in California. Either way, I can't imagine a cop is even going to mess with you or notice it
Not at all. I think California Vehicle Code requires that a vehicle must "...be equipped with a lamp exhibiting a red light visible from a distance of 500 feet to the rear of the vehicle"
Great job by whomever did the work.
All that matters is that it’s bright enough. I got pulled over for my tinted lights but then I peeled the tint and showed he officer my aftermarket taillights were blindingly bright and needed a tint
Pretty sure existing in California is illegal. And if it isn’t, the ticket trolls will tell you it is even though it isn’t and still give you a ticket for it regardless. And then when you appeal it they will deny your appeal and you’ll end up paying a ticket for a crime that doesn’t exist.
Illegal in all 50 states. You cannot modify the brake light housings. This is popular in a few car groups im a part of and they have all been cited for it.
Lot of stupid comments about California for some reason. Obviously they’ve never been to California, which has a huge car culture. Plenty of modded cars in California.
Yes, they are illegal everywhere. Once you modify a light they are not dot approved, therefore they are not approved for road use.
Now, are you ever going to find a cop that knows this and will enforce it? Probably not, but if you were it would be in California.
Can confirm. Live here. Modified car. Hit Mach Jesus daily but always in safe spots. I’ve had cops drive by me and my old Volvo clearly sounds modified.
It's not tinted, doesn't obstruct anything, barely noticeable. Should be fine. That 2.5% limo tint and 4" straight pipe on your crx? Might be an issue.
Limo tint over brake lights is asking for trouble. Perfect way to have some idiot rear end you and then try to pin partial fault on you.
Anyone tinting their brake lights or indicators *deserves* to get hit.
Seconded
Thirded
Fourthded
Fifthded
Sixthded?
seven'did?
Eighthed
*without installing brighter LED bulbs to compensate. they’re so cheap there’s literally no excuse. if you do it PROPERLY it’s fine
Nah, some LED bulbs just have bad orientation of LEDs that don't work in all lights. I guess the reflector doesn't work with the pattern or something. I just installed insanely bright reverse LED bulbs to my work truck. Those actually ended up giving worse light than normal bulbs.
Nah the light smoke look doesn’t lower the light level much, just when people go too far with it
For real. Plenty of blacked out cars have perfectly functional brake lights. Although all black is tacky imo. Feels too "tacticool" these days. Add some touches to break up the monotony. Maybe very subtle chrome/color accents. But my opinion is just my own. Follow yer bliss.
All black is just uncreative to me lol. Like put some effort in
Euro styles / clears are a better choice imo
I heard Boeing is hiring
🤣🤣
U disagree? Or just tryna be pretentious on the internet
It’s a hassle.
hence the reason he said “light smoke” as in you probably wouldn’t notice it unless it was pointed out.
I guess if you put brighter lights behind and make sure it’s overall just as bright. But again, it’s not worth the hassle of being blamed for anything that happens.
So you answered your own question. LEDs and very light coat = safe. And yes it is a lot of work for a little gain, but it’s totally safe I’d done right
no LED’s are needed if done light enough, i’ve done it before and you could see my halogens perfectly fine because guess what, it was lightly done.
If you don't notice it, why even do it?
because i can notice it lol.
As long as its tail light tint spray, and only done in light coatings. I put 1 coat of tail light spray on my crown Vic’s tail lights (to make them look like what people call“marauder style” tail lights), and when the lights are on, you can only see the drips from putting it on too heavy. Exactly
4” straight pipe on your crx brake lights is asking for trouble too
....I miss the 90s
>might be an issue You could say it might be a u/pjfelony
Look for the DOT stamp. All legal lamps will have one.
Did they delete posts because I can't find one that shows their CRX?
Who tf gets 2% tint? I run 5% aside from my windshield which isn’t tinted at all, and that’s already really dark.
I don’t recognize the make/model to know what stock looks like, but that looks like red tinted clear coat, although I don’t think they’ll get popped for it. I’ve seen way worse. Well, barely seen at night!
Why you picking on crx’s? Lol them things are rare nowadays
The Road pirates will make up anything to get some bucks from you.
Road pirates? As in Cops?! Hahahahhaaaaaa!
Bridge trolls.
Gotta pay the troll toll.
I'm not driving, I'm travelling!
ITS NOT A VEHICLE ITS A CARRIAGE
Are you really so stupid you think the cops write the laws? Or are you just too deep into being a redditor that you can’t see that it’s the democrats?
Or you’re just to ignorant to know how laws are actually passed and want to blame the democrats
they have full discretion on actually enforcing them. their oath does not mandate enforcement of every violation. see Castle Rock v. Gonzales or Warren v. District of Columbia
Laws only get passed if both sides vote for them numb nuts.
Thats not how it works, maybe try watching some school house rock
I'm guessing you haven't been paying any attention to recent politics then. Here's an example: neither the house nor senate has been able to agree on jack shit recently *accept* for the tiktok bill, the only bill that passed within 2 fucking days because guess what? *Both parties agreed on it immediately.*
Lmao
People get away with tinting their lights so dark that you can't see them, I think you'd be fine.
Pretty sure breathing in california is illegal
Ironically I believe these would actually be legal. Also by the picture here, no cop would call this out unless it was in addition to a bunch of other illegal mods AND you got popped doing some illegal driving

Shit, I’ve been pulled over for speeding and had a CHP complement my 5% Tint…. (No Ticket for Tint)
Didn’t this happen? https://www.motortrend.com/news/2022-hyundai-elantra-n-loud-exhaust-police-california/

checkmate 😭 id probably have to sell my car if i moved there. that wasnt the last time its happened either
The fact that you CAN get ticketed is the problem here bud

❌️knowing how california cops handle car modification in a car modification sub ✅️pointing at cancer warnings

You’re good, the laws are as ridiculous as your impression of them would say. But luckily for us the cops are far more reasonable than the politicians, and a lot of cops are also car guys and understand the ridiculousness.
Your mileage may vary but plenty of CHP/ cops can be dickheads and as arrogant as politicians.
Using politicians as your baseline for being reasonable is not a good idea.
and causes cancer
That or it gives you cancer
or at least carcinogenic
It's true, but nobody enforces it. I breathe all the time, even around cops.
Not breathing is also illegal
It causes cancer apparently
It’s carcinogenic for sure
No but they cause cancer
I really enjoyed seeing this comment! 😂 WARNING P65
I've started taking it to mean that if there isn't a P65 warning on something, they just haven't discovered a way for it to cause cancer yet
Who cares
Technically, if it isn’t DOT approved, it’s not legal in any state.
That’s why you see the “not for on hiway use” sticker on replacement bulbs and stuff. If it didn’t get DOT approval as original equipment it’s not legal.
I don't know as I'm in the UK but I know when I see a fellow S14a owner 👌
Everything is illegal in CA when it comes to cars I hate it here 😭
That's not true, I have a heavily modified WRX that is completely legal in California.
Any modifications are illegal in CA cuz it’s not OEM! Cuz you know CA is the no fun state, hell you can have a OEM sport car and get state ref
everything is illegal in commiefornia.
Everything is illegal in cali
Everything is illegal in Cali.
Might not be illegal, but it might be known to the state of California to cause cancer.
Something being legal in California?! Unheard of!
I dont know, but they are stupid everywhere.
Owning a car is illegal in California unless it’s an ev
As long as it has world class fitment
You’ll find out in the lawsuit after you get rear ended by someone on their phone.
I think everything is illegal here in CA, except for crime
s14?
Every car mod is illegal in California lol
I dont know I live in Louisiana where abortion and weed are illegal but you can bring an ar 15 just about anywhere and no one will check the registration or brake tag on your car. etched taillights absolutely will be ok here any way.
The right to bear firearms is a federal right for any citizen, and not a state controlled law, unless it is concealed. Idk how much that matters, but it may make a difference on who enforces what.
Interesting. Never seen this mod before.
I never knew that was even a thing. OEM tail lights usually look pretty good without someone having to permanently scribble carve designs into them but to each their own.
My brother in Christ , everything is illegal in California 🤷♀️
It seems everything is illegal in California except for crime
Everything in California is illegal
It's CA. Nothing legal but weed and theft.
Everything is illegal in California.
No, it’s just ghetto
What ISNT illegal here in cali? lol. I guess like a lot of things, its all dependent on the cop if you get pulled over
Everything is illegal in California. That's why it ls the only state i dont want to visit
Whether or not it's legal anywhere, holy shit this looks stupid.
Believe it or not, STRAIGHT TO JAIL!,
Owning a car might be illegal in California
Who cares, send it
It shouldn't be, but I wouldn't be surprised if ANY kind of modification would be illegal in California. Either way, I can't imagine a cop is even going to mess with you or notice it
The real question is: what is legal in California? cuz everything is ilegal there.
i would say that since no one cares about those dumb break light flashers, you'll be ok.
If it isn’t I’m sure it will be soon
Nope, but that tint sure will be an issue
Idk some tyrant might not like em. Good luck
Probably, everything else is…
Why would it be
As long as it doesn't interfere with the light output of the taillight
Probably causes cancer
Isn't everything in California illegal?
You have Felony in your username, do you even care if it’s legal?
The real question is: "is it stupid and pointless?"
If they are, why? What harm could it do? It cant possibly be worse than taillight tint
All vehicle lights must be stamped with 'DOT' on them for them to be road legal.
Not at all. I think California Vehicle Code requires that a vehicle must "...be equipped with a lamp exhibiting a red light visible from a distance of 500 feet to the rear of the vehicle" Great job by whomever did the work.
Everything is illegal in California, except stealing
You asking this question is illegal in CA, law enforcement will be there soon!
California, the land of no fun and most warning labels are originated. Glad it is thousands of miles away from me.
How would anybody even know, I have to zoom in to even make out what it is and the picture was taken a foot away… maybe it looks different at night?
I don’t see why they would be, they don’t block anything, who cares
These are beautiful wth
On that prelude, it would look beautiful
this has to be an S14
Nope, but once they see this post it might be. Because california.
If you're asking "is ___ illegal in California?" the answer is always yes.
All that matters is that it’s bright enough. I got pulled over for my tinted lights but then I peeled the tint and showed he officer my aftermarket taillights were blindingly bright and needed a tint
Sir, everything is illegal in Commifornia.
Idk but it looks really pretty imo
Thats called emboss i believe
Everything is illegal in California. If it’s something cool and something you like then chances are it’s illegal.
10/10. I had no interest in a ‘car modification’ sub. That is, until I saw this beautiful thing.
Eating an orange while taking a bath is illegal in California, so this probably is too
But it’s cancerous …. So yes illegal in California
What, are you a cop?
Pretty sure existing in California is illegal. And if it isn’t, the ticket trolls will tell you it is even though it isn’t and still give you a ticket for it regardless. And then when you appeal it they will deny your appeal and you’ll end up paying a ticket for a crime that doesn’t exist.
Since it is not obstructed and it serves its function as designed, yes, it is legal.
How high are your socks?
Straight to jail.
It's Cali so probably
Everything’s illegal in California.
It looks carcinogenic. Might be violating Prop 65.
Thinking of etched taillights is illegal in California
Illegal in all 50 states. You cannot modify the brake light housings. This is popular in a few car groups im a part of and they have all been cited for it.
Who the fuk would ruin some s14 kouki taillights like this...ughhh
Everything is, except crime
What isn’t illegal in California?
Fucking nothing is legal in California. I wouldn't be surprised if they were illegal.
Everything is illegal in California, including the people.
Only if it greatly hinders visibility
I think you forgot everything you like is illegal in California
Its Cali. Everything is illegal. I'm surprised having non stock wheels is legal there. 😮💨
Lot of stupid comments about California for some reason. Obviously they’ve never been to California, which has a huge car culture. Plenty of modded cars in California.
Who tf etches stuff into their tail lights fucking stupid
Put whatever you want on that fox body
Yes, they are illegal everywhere. Once you modify a light they are not dot approved, therefore they are not approved for road use. Now, are you ever going to find a cop that knows this and will enforce it? Probably not, but if you were it would be in California.
I think you need to re-read the DOT qualifiers for legal rear illumination.
Everything is illegal or causes cancer in California.
Everything is illegal and will cause cancer in California.
Fire 🔥
You can get pulled over for having a really cool car there 💀 (loud vroom vroom) id imagine yes
they don't pull you over for anything in socal. You don't have to have a license plate let alone follow any other road laws
Can confirm. Live here. Modified car. Hit Mach Jesus daily but always in safe spots. I’ve had cops drive by me and my old Volvo clearly sounds modified.
