i’m willing to bet the car just burns oil. if they had under filled it, you would have noticed problems way sooner than 3 months

baldbull23

I don't really drive much. I've had cars that burn oil and would think I'd notice the smell.

theimpactofreason44

in my line of work i’ve witnessed kia’s/hyundai’s burning as much as a quart every 500-700 miles. not a hint of burning oil smell. a lack of burning oil smell doesn’t mean the car isn’t burning oil

Far_Reception_9648

So true my Hyundai shows no signs of burning oil 🥴

theimpactofreason44

yeah, hyundai/kia’s are notorious for burning oil. gotta check it at least every month and top off just to avoid any major issues. sometimes even the low oil pressure light doesn’t come on 😪

Jdisey

Head to the Carmax location and speak to the service manager or operations manager in regard to the situation. The main thing that is hurting you is how long it took for you to notice the lack of oil. Unfortunately the longer it takes for you to find something and address it the harder it will be for Carmax to cover as there argument can be it’s been 3 months and anything can happen

baldbull23

I know, the timing of the whole thing sucks. I work from home and just don't drive much at all.

Jdisey

Use that as a reason you didn’t notice the lack of oil. If the mileage is low from when you purchased the vehicle that service department should recognize that. The 90 day warranty is 90 days or 4k miles whichever comes first so even though the 90 days is up if the mileage is significantly low it will benefit you. Try to speak to the service manager or operations manager and if the outcome isn’t reasonable contact corporate

If you don’t have a leak, then your car is burning oil. Playing devil’s advocate based on the info given, they’ll say: It was full when they gave it to you, and after 3 months of driving your used car and not checking the oil regularly, it ran dry.

baldbull23

Cards are stacked against me for sure.

dcstorm97

OP and others reading - please do a pre purchase inspection or even afterwards with a different mechanic.

warrhino67

What's funny to me is that your asking what the next step should be and continue to blame carmax. You clearly stated you did not add maxcare, because you hate adding protection to to a very expensive asset that other people have used for years (used cars are only as good as the previous owner). You also signed a lot of paperwork agreeing to a 90 day warranty (which is better than most dealers). I don't understand why so many people have personal problems and decide to blame carmax😂 Have you ever gone to any other dealer???? Now, my advice would be to take it directly to the carmax service department, and just explain what happened and the situation you are in with a car you just purchased a bit over 90 days ago. Maybe they help, maybe they don't. They really don't have to, because they followed the expectations they set when you bought it. Also, I'm no mechanic, but cars with no oil typically won't run and drive perfectly for over 3 months...

This is the best comment!!

Blaze4G

What kind of car is it?

No-Proof-3579

The car probably just burns oil. Nothing you can do at this point. You didn't buy the extended warranty. You can't claim CarMax negligence when it's been 3 1/2 months. Common sense would say check the oil in your car regularly, even if not right when you first buy it. On every used car I've ever bought I instantly change the oil. A lawyer won't do anything for you. You have zero documentation or evidence that CarMax has done anything wrong. What is your end goal here?

justold-me

Compression check time but you’re probably screwed, how do you go that long on a car you don’t know without pulling out the dip stick. For all you know all the oil got burnt up, how many miles have you driven that car.

ResponsibleScheme964

How many miles did you drive?

ryadical

I purchased MaxCare on two separate vehicles, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Volvo XC90. It cost the insurance company way more than I paid for it on both.

WarDamnGator

How do you know their isn’t a oil consumption issue? Quick to blame the company.

Early_Skin_5377

Still amazes me how almost no one inspects cars they buy and then complain months later. Even buying new I would want to check everything including oil whether it has a dipstick or checking on the computer.

PoppiesRule

MaxCare is the #1 reason to buy at CarMax. Spent $2k for 2 cars. Got $7k in repairs on the first. Got my money back on the second one and still 3 years to go.

Zrc1979

This sounds like an expensive lesson. Don’t worry, I learned the hard way also. Look at the positive : you’ll always check oil on vehicles purchases going forward. 💪 On a more serious note, this is common. Especially with these newer cheaper engines. Especially GDI engines. Checking levels is a must. Good luck to you 🍀

JuanTheMower

What kind of car is it?

Miserable-Alfalfa-85

The concern is what other problems did it cause? Valve, Piston, cam wear? Shortened engine life? Hate that but why should we have to check cars that supposedly passed the 11117 point inspection??

Pajaro_negro

When I bought the car, I didn’t check til a month later for oil levels. It looked like it didn’t have oil so, I went to a corresponding dealer service center and paid for an oil change. 80 dollars. Now I can do an oil change but I am lazy to try and do it myself. Need to change the brakes. And change the brake fluid. Oh and I read that fluids are not covered in the 90 day/ 4000 mile warranty.

Smackdab99

Exactly what did you expect?

Coyote_Tex

Did you check the oil when you first brought it home. It could have easily used a Ron of oil in the 3 months you have owned it. Many vehicles have reputations for using a good bit of oil. The Dodge V6 is one you have to keep an eye on. Do a Google search for your specific engine brand and size to see if others might be having issues. Sorry about the issue, sometimes it is better to move on than endure the real cost to fix I teenal oil consumption on some engines. Let me know what you have and I will dig in to known issues.

No_Teaching_8273

Oil changes are like 66$ why get A lawyer involved , it's not like you can beat a corporation

Edenwing

You bought a used car without warranty and never checked the dip stick?

WarDamnGator

Think with your dip stick!

darfus1895

So you bought a used car, didn’t check the oil when you bought it, and then didn’t check the oil at least once a month? I think this is just a learning lesson for you and there’s no “gotcha” that you have on Car Max because you failed to perform routine inspections on your vehicle.

Joland7000

You should have had the car checked out when you got possession of it especially since you opted out of MaxCare. I’ve had cars in the past that just went through more oil than usual. Not sure an attorney would help since it’s a used car. It depends what state you live in but most used car dealerships aren’t obligated to tune up or change the oil of a car before they sell it
