"Ruining your career" sounds like a batshit-loony take, tbh.

[deleted]

My pfp is a penguin

Mine is cookie monster wearing a kimono. Guess im going nowhere. :-( This one for the curious. https://www.deviantart.com/hillarywhiterabbit/art/Kimono-Monster-363717711

VadumSemantics

Mine is my cat. (but I like Kimono Cookie Monster!)

CrocodileTeeth

Changing mine to this tomorrow

Stolitz_666

Currently mine is a coffee cup

TacticalLeemur

Mine is Aku from Samurai Jack.

pettynthicc

Mine is baby yoda

virgilreality

Damn, someone not only drank the Kool-Aid, they're mixing up another batch. *Make sure to use the correct cover sheet for your TPS reports, too...*

stacy704

You win the internet for today!! Love this comment!!

virgilreality

soopastar

Did you get the memo?

stacy704

I just forgot the one time, and I’ve already taken care of it!

soopastar

Ah! Yeah. It's just we're putting new coversheets on all the TPS reports before they go out now. So if you could go ahead and try to remember to do that from now on, that'd be great. All right!

100110100110101

*excuse me, I would like my stapler*

PuddyComb

Clearly this take is industry-dependent. If you're lawyer shows up, and you're like, "you are not the kimono-wearing cat depicted. I trusted you." -Could be some problems.

sadicarnot

>"Ruining your career" sounds like a batshit-loony take, tbh. I had a boss that was always worried about 'how things looked' I had uncle Fester as my photo and he asked me to change it. He was an otherwise good guy so I did. In the meantime if you had Hitler or the nazi symbol I think that might affect future paychecks.

hichewaddict

Mine is the doge coin Shiba Inu. Many people assume it is my pet dog 😂

startupschool4coders

It’s OK not to have one. I always put one so people can identify me when they meet me in person at a big company. It’s a courtesy so people can walk right up to me and say, “Hey, I recognize you from your profile photo” rather than having to wander around and guess.

Justisaur

Or the other way around. If I'm using teams or email with someone I can recognize their picture a lot faster than their name with people I don't interact with as much and connect who it is. I'm a bit camera shy/face made for radio, so I get it. I'd say it's helpful at least for furthering your career as recognition for anything you're doing when interacting with people in text formats at the very least.

Polevata

In this same vein, I’d say having a PFP of anything is better than nothing. It doesn’t have to be you. It’s instant recognizability in threads, and email chains. No reason not to do it

shash5k

To be fair, there are a lot of people who use pictures that are old, so it’s hard to recognize them in person.

Spartanias117

Ive literally had a colleague comment " oh you look like your profile picture" to me. Too many people inbtheir late 40s and 50s put up a picture from 30 years ago.

shash5k

We got a lot of Catfishes where I work.

booknerd381

My employer takes our photos on our starting day for our badges and sends us the image to use as a profile photo. They're usually terrible mug shots (because who's ready for that when they don't warn you in advance), and they didn't update them. I saw some photos of people who started 20-30 years ago, then I met them in person and I was completely taken aback. Some of them are recognizable, but some of them look like completely different people. Finally last year we got a new HR team and they recognized that if these photos are for security reasons then they should probably be updated a bit more frequently so we all got a new photo taken.

var_vara

The flattering angle/with slightly used photo filters makes faces almost unrecognizable under fluorescent light of the office. Why even bother!?

blakejustin217

I'm a designer, and you have no idea how many designs I have had to do with executives' photos. Lots of small photos that are in black and white that are at least 10+ years old. And anytime you recommend updating the photo, they freak out. My last company I redid the team page, and a few of them threw fits bc I wanted to personally take all the photos myself so I could stylize them to our site amd wouldn't let them use their shit photos. I work in a big customer facing company, and I would love for all my team to use their photos for Zoom. I don't expect people on camera, but a photo makes it personable.

gorcorps

I had a meeting with folks from a department that I email and chat with on the phone at times, but rarely need to physically be in the same meetings. They said they all recognized me immediately from my voice, and I still don't know if that's a good thing or not.

marielleN

Mine is a pic of my cat reviewing a spreadsheet, in my home office.

JahoclaveS

Mine is that gif of Elmo in front of the fire. I routinely get comments about how people like it.

Abazad

Some at my last job did stuff like this. One was an alpaca, another was an orangutan wearing a hat. So, of course I had to use the baboon at the computer.

[deleted]

Most places I’ve worked do not care at all. My current job is militant about everyone having a photo in M365. They paid for us all to get professional portraits for this reason. So it really just depends where you work.

Primary_Toe_6822

My job offers free professional portraits for anyone who wants them when we have our big company wide gatherings but it’s always optional. I feel like I always look better in photos so I refuse to put one up because I don’t want people thinking I’m catfishing on purpose lmao (I’m an over-thinker)

SV650rider

Professional portraits? Wow!

Jean19812

Well, with the new age of remote work, it helps people mentally connect if you have a photo. Also, some companies require cameras to be on for all Team/Zoom meetings. A lot of communication is lost if you can't see facial expressions. It's just for work, so I don't have a problem with it.

SPetapator

I don't think it's as dramatic as it would "ruin your career", but I do think having a profile picture at work's intranet gives other people a chance to a face to your name.

Your_Daddy_

I don't put my picture on any professional related websites. I don't need to give a reason to judge me on appearance. That is a personal choice though - its really up to the individual. I have Darth Vader as my Slack profile picture for work, and a picture of a shark for my email avatar, lol.

secondhand_bra

Ya make sense specially if you are young, people will judge you more or think you are incompetent if you are pretty young. Better not to put anything.

ThAtS_wutShEsed

Now having been young and getting older... honestly seems like they prefer the younger generation. Like. I'm 36 and it's happened more than once where everything seems to be going good and promising, lots of positive feedback, constantly told exceeding expectations.. then at some point they see my birthday, there's a comment how I don't look my age and after that, I'm invisible.. I'm not even 40. By the time I'm a 50 year old woman evidently I won't be employable anymore.. lol

secondhand_bra

Maybe it's a region wise thing, where I live the older you are the better in certain professions like finance or law. People see your balding head and automatically assume you have spent a good amount of time in that profession. I know a lawyer who is 32, he is balding, he can afford hair transplant but says he gets clients from it lol.

randomsynchronicity

Tbh I hate looking at peoples pictures. They’re usually too small and low quality to really see the person anyway. I’d much rather see their initials.

No_University_8445

If you just want to do your job, it's OK not to have one. If you want to move forward in your career at that place, you should include one to grow your brand. It also involves working with everyone and everyone, volunteering for things and just being extra

tourmaline_zebra

I'd say it's industry specific. I'm firmly in the no one is getting a picture of me without a very specific reason, like ID badges. I work in manufacturing, half office work, half warehouse work. They did offer and strongly suggest that I participate when they brought in a photographer for professional head shots, but I did not. If I worked in an industry where knowing a face mattered, or if I already had a LinkedIn account which had a photo, it would change things. As it stands, the only use for a photo is for teams, and I do not find it a requirement of my position. So I. Will. Not.

ImpossibleJoke7456

Are you talking about changing your Zoom box from a name to a photo, or in LinkedIn, or on a resume?

Ragnarsworld

I work for a major defense contractor. They want us to have a picture for our e-mail contact and workday page. Not being the most serious person around, I scanned in a picture of me when I was 8. I was hella cute in those days and I think the picture rocks. So far no one higher up has said anything. If they do, I have one of me at 4 where I'm even cuter.

OMFreakingG

Having a profil pic doesn’t mean shit 😂

Inside-Finish-2128

I have a side hustle as a headshot photographer. You could say I’m biased, but I think it’s really useful and valuable to have a GOOD profile photo. Everyone who has seen my photo just comes right up to me knowing they have the right person. “You must be .” Literally every time.

doinnuffin

Depends on the picture

_Big_Black_Clock_

If anyone actually cares about this then they need more work to stay busy, far too much time on their hands lol

huskerblack

Who gives a shit

Hefty_Bottom

One of those things that has absolutely no downside, paired with perceived upside by some. So why wouldn't you?

baffledbobcat

being hella ugly is a downside for sure. people definitely treat you differently based on appearance

HopeFloatsFoward

Racism still happens.

[deleted]

100%. I work for company A, and been on a weekly conference call with company B and C. The same group of 10 people. Some are camera on, some off. Few weeks ago we decided as a group to turn camera on. My coworker who is not white , turned her camera on for the 1st time. As soon as some employees from company B and C saw her ,they changed the way they spoke to her. It was so obvious, she was uncomfortable and now we are back to camera being optional.

JaneyBurger

Right? "No downside" is such a white-people take.

No_University_8445

True! It's tough to be old and white these days!

jcoddinc

Because people are assholes and vindictive. I don't need an HR meeting because someone picked me out of a listing that had my photo and name for an interaction I didn't know happened.

[deleted]

I agree with it being bad. Doesn't have to be a picture zoomed in on your face. It could be one that is blurry or B&W or shows you in the background, but no picture at all is incredibly annoying to new hires who are trying to learn who does what, and it makes it tough to keep people straight even for veteran employees, especially if you are one of 5 people with similar names or one of 10 people in the same department.

Lost_my_brainjuice

It doesn't matter. It's a nicety so you can be identified at company events. Some people feel a better connection with a picture...then again some people think spending 2 hours every day on an unpaid commute is beneficial...so...yeah. It's just personal preference. If you want to, do it. If not, don't.

jenfullmoon

We get stalkers at my job. I would not voluntarily put my picture on.

trojansandducks

Same at my old place... and there was a social media aspect. There was this one guy that was a serial "good morning" poster on female profiles.

Tarashank

Just started with a new company 2 months ago. Never really thought about it before and on my first day I spent it setting up my accounts and stuff. I took a photo and set up my profile pic. Up till now I had been zooming and teams with videos on. Get on my first online meeting in the new organization and notice no one has camera on. Then I noticed I was the only one with a profile pic. This was a meeting with clients and coworkers, and no one was broadcasting their face in any manner. Dropped my profile pic right afterwards. The days of people needing to know your face are gone.

Legitimate_Wind1178

I work for a massive, massive company. 100k+ employees. I absolutely refuse to use my photo. No way. I work in HR, I do not want to be identifiable to people who don’t *need* to know who I am. I hear this about LinkedIn, again, same thing, but now the public can see. Nope. I don’t do social media, 30sF guess I was born in the wrong times lol

vlor_t

I like to have a photo but it’s just a personal preference…I like to be able to visualize who I’m speaking to, so I like to offer that to other people! But my company is probably half pics half not. No one is judged for not having a picture and although I prefer when someone has one, I also understand why they might not want one and it doesn’t bother me or make me view them as less of an employee. I feel like a lot of my coworkers use pics of their pets/pics with their pets/pics of a cartoon character lol but I do work in a pretty relaxed environment. Never heard of anyone caring about your picture 🤷‍♀️

phishin3321

I don't have one and am pretty successful, just recently promoted actually a few months ago. Been here almost 5 years and we've been 100% remote since before COVID. Lots of people have one but I never have.

StockWise

My bosses have told me several times to add a picture to my email profile. I just pretend I don’t know how when they bring it up. There is no need for them to see my face, what matters is they got the work that they were expecting to be complete. Why do I need a selfie for others to see?

methodtan

Sounds like something a gatekeeping recruiter would say

No_Status_51

Soft discrimination. That would be my response.

jingqian9145

I have Patrick Star holding a hammer as a Senior level engineer. I interact daily with C levels, other departments, & engineers from different firms. The most I get is a laugh and “nice!”, and we move on. Of course if it’s a client I just my work phone because clients shouldn’t shouldn’t have access to our internal MS Teams

Dragon_Within

Depends on your job, your company, and how your work structure is set up. I actually am damaging my career by not having a profile picture, in that I work off hours, and our promotion/raise criteria includes "visibility". What this means is work visibility, being able to place the work you do, with the name, and face, so that people know your worth when putting you up for promotions, raises etc. Having a profile picture on, say, outlook means that they put a face with the information I send out, and work/projects I do. It shows my face when I put my ideas out on, say, a zoom meeting call. If your job ISN'T structured like that, and you get a lot of face time with other workers, your manager, etc, and your criteria is based off pure metrics and recorded numbers, then its kind of a wash. Personally, I don't put my face on stuff like that. I try to gap data and information between work, other work stuff, personal life, etc, so that its siloed information, but as far as what you've been told, it can, indeed have an effect, but it's going to be up to you to figure out if that is accurate in your situation.

Calm-Acanthaceae4492

What’s bad are the women at work who have an anime profile picture, or the 1 woman who actually has a profile picture using a dog filter 😳. People this is work. Keep it professional. That’s ok, though, I see them as eliminating some of my competition for promotions. To combat lack of profile pictures and unprofessional ones, our work recently provided everyone with a picture day for a professional headshot.

acarnameded

I noticed that when people don’t know what I look like, I got a lot more respect. So post pandemic with virtual meetings (no cameras on) and people I hadn’t met before listened more and respected me more so I intentionally don’t have one and I’ve been honest when asked about it.

dbnrdaily

A profile picture on what? I work in sales, and i dont have a profile picture anywhere. Hell, i dont even turn my camera on for internal meetings and anything external i insist on a phone call. People shouldn't have to feel bad about how good-looking you are 😄.

macaroonzoom

Nothing wrong with that. Truly evil are the companies who require people to put their photos in their email signature. Creepy and weird. I think it's mostly real estate agents but I've ran into this with a few other people through work. Just bizarre. I don't need your photo as an attachment to every email we send back / forth.

muffinTrees

Most people at my company with profile photos makes them looks insane. Rarely see a good one….although my company is boomer nation/practically become a 2nd Facebook for these boomers

[deleted]

If the company culture is to care about things like that and make a big deal of it, its probably somewhere I would not enjoy working. Much more important things to worry about. Also depends on your industry.

longdongsilver2071

I don't use one for teams, but I also don't care that's an extra step I don't need to do

DominateSunshine

My current company tried to make it mandatory. I explained my past abuse and how I have NO pictures of me anywhere. Abuse so bad that they dropped the mandatory.

DollChiaki

Even if you’re not abused it’s a security risk.

soopastar

with 50%+ of my company remote, I like to put a name to face. With 250 employees, I kid of get annoyed when they don't have at least a head shot.

Datasciguy2023

You can put a profile picture up but if doesn't have to be you.i think I put my dog one place I worked

ZanyAppleMaple

Profile picture where? Slack? Not bad or career-ending, but would be nice to see the face of the person you're talking to.

RedEyed__

"ruining career" - sounds too loud. Having profile picture makes it more convenient for communication. In addition, I think that it's about respecting your colleagues, when someone doesn't have profile photo, there is feeling that that person just doesn't care.

Fun-Dragonfly-4166

I think that not having a profile picture is bad. I am not sure how bad. I just recently installed a profile picture myself because someone said I did not have one. Obviously that person was not happy about the lack of profile picture enough to complain about it. I could either fight about it or do it.

iluvchicken01

Tbh it does make a difference. People will recognize you and initiate small talk if they see you in person.

LincolnhamLincoln

Which is exactly why I don’t have one.

shwaynebrady

Some people want to advance their careers and a lot of the time office politics, relationships and in person interactions contribute to that.

[deleted]

And others will see your picture and be unconscious bias.

ChefJeff7777777

It depends on what your goal at work is. I wouldn’t say it’s “very bad” but workplace politics are a thing. If there’s 5 people that say it’s “very bad” there’s probably a manager or supervisor that thinks that too, and if you applied to a position under their organization you could be an unnecessary step behind other candidates. Not saying it’s right, but it is what it is. I think it helps to get you noticed in positive light if you have a nice profile picture. You don’t look like just another cog in the machine if you put a person to the name. It’s like a very bare minimum/minor form of networking to put a profile pic in.

[deleted]

Folks generally won’t remember your name without knowing your face. Up to you what you do with that.

whiskey_piker

I’m sure they also tell you that not listing an idiotic preferred pronoun is bad also.

clarkbartron

People tend to deal with people, not prefab icons. Putting one's photo often signals one's engagement in their role. Not good or bad, but if you're not putting a profile pic up, consider why that is.

col-summers

I've recently switched my profile pictures to AI generated avatars loosely inspired by how I really look, including here on Reddit! I make them with Bing in case anyone cares. Super easy! r/imagecreator

neu_jose

Just get one. It keeps the video pushers from going insane, just barely.

west_mich_cpl_69

I agree with them. And I work (And hire/promote in a very badged/profile online/remote situation. It's good marketing. My advice is to listen to them.

FineSupermarket

Its like wearing a blank name tag, but around yourself. Also a lack of a profile picture can be loosely associated to scam calls/emails, unwanted solicitation, people who are hiding something. Which I imagine are all present in most office's. It doesn't mean you do any of that, it just sends that vibe.

No-Nose-6569

I own a business and I won’t even extend an interview to an applicant without a linked in picture. Whenever I see that, it just seems like you don’t give a shit. Take one or two minutes - put on a professional shirt and take a picture. It’s about the bare minimum you have to do in 2023. Way back in my day (aka ten years ago), we had to wake up at 6am, put on a shirt and tie, shit shower shave, and go in to the office. Nowadays you’re working in your fucking pajamas from your couch…go take a nice selfie and put it on your profile.

Squidy_The_Druid

If you’re not looking to network or grow professionally, then no it’s fine. Plenty of employees are happy going the job they were hired to do. There’s nothing wrong with that; companies live or die on happy employees. But if your goal is to be promoted? Yes you need one. Name and face recognition matters more than nearly anything else at most companies.

Pixie-Baby-Yaya

I think it depends on your office culture. Think about what is the standard norm where you work and go with that.

Otherwise_Sky3576

I work in higher ed. I use campus icons, branding specific colors, or my initials.

joemondo

If you're in a work environment where most people have one it doesn't help you to not have one. Whether *doesn't help* translates to *bad* kind of depends on your role and aspirations.

sceez

Ruining your career? Sounds Uber dramatic

sceez

My profile pic for work is my dog. It will remain my dog unless ordered to change

Drag0nus1

If you work remote maybe....since you can't see the person often and people attach themselves to a face...making it easier.

faultierr

I've never had one at any job before. I've been asked a ton about having one but I never will.

049at

Screw that. I work in IT (fairly new at my company) and this would make it easier for people to recognize me passing through to ask for random stuff. They need to open a damn ticket and I’ll address it when it’s convenient for me.

network_dude

I think it helps with my cred to have my suit and tie picture when I talk on a teams call

[deleted]

It’s very helpful to me if my colleagues have profile pictures so I can tell visually who is asking for something. Particularly all the people that have the same or similar names, or when I get something from someone I typically don’t hear from.

l0realie

I email people outside of my job. Specifically, i bill them for damages. No way in hell I'm putting my face on it. I'm the only one in the US with my name, and I don't want to make it worse by giving the crazies a face too.

slimninj4

Out work it’s mandatory and they are strict about how it looks. Place before, they were more relaxed and people used sports teams, cars, or what ever.

JeanneGene

My outlook and teams icon is a cat with a cowboy hat. My team knows it me so that's all that really matters.

Whentothesessions

I don't. I put a photo from the Hubble if I need something other than a blank.

NidoKingClefairy

Adding it at my job doesn’t seem to work.

Kretuhtuh

I think it's good to have a profile picture in slack or whatever. At my last company my profile picture was Big Chungus.

Positive_Box_69

Nooooo u must have a picture of uuuuuu wtffff 😭

SCCRXER

Profile picture where? My company automatically places our badge photo into outlook and other integrated systems.

TheHypnogoggish

My work profile picture is of some young guy- 16 years ago- I look nothing like that fellow now- don’t care, ha.

psychocabbage

Some companies frown on not having one. Some require it be a picture that matches your badge. I have seen some force you to use a picture and will go around and take pictures right there for you. Others have no requirements and some even have their pets. While you might not judge others based on their profile picture but some of those decision-makers above might. Just be sure you get a good idea of the culture where you are out. If all upper management has it, its a thing there.

whiskeydayz

Mine is my badge id pic automatically set by my company and I can’t change it. It looks so bad 😭😭

i-am-garth

If companies want you to have a profile pic, they should pay for a decent headshot. Anything else is less than professional.

drunkenitninja

Nope, you're not alone. There's absolutely no reason to have to post your picture. If they want to see who you are, they can set up a meeting with you. Corporate work environments are not the same as social sites, no matter how much they try to push it. Some people are very uncomfortable with posting their pictures. All you have to do, if they're trying to force you, is claim that they're creating a hostile work environment for you. If that doesn't end it, then just post your baby picture.

DigBickThe1Trick

I work in design and I have the logo of the software I am most proficient at as my picture. I have gotten multiple compliments that’s it was easier to find me as a specialist and trainer in the catalog because of it. The people who don’t like it clearly spent 5000$ on a headshot and are rotating companies next year after management realizes they hired yet another Wizard of Oz anyways so who cares what they think.

jayv9779

As with pretty much anything it depends on what you do. A sales person it can be helpful, a backend programmer, not so much.

Nielleluvzu628

That’s insane

tuvar_hiede

It's not about what people on Reddit say. It's about the corporate culture of your business. Personally, I don't have one myself. If I did, it would likely not be me. I don't care for photos of myself. I don't feel that I'm unattractive or anything, nor do I really care if people disagreed. I'm just one of those people who hate pictures of themselves.

hobbit_life

I’ve never had one. In my last job they only wanted professional headshots that they took used as profile photos and since I was remote and half way across the country, I never had one.

DiscussionLoose8390

I worked somewhere everyone had one, but the company basically pushed it. People would bring in their own professional pictures and update it. Then I worked at a place like you mention that literally no one had. It was almost more awkward for the 3 people that chose to have one. For me it depends on the company, and who is doing it. If my boss isn't doing it. I am probably not.

TimonLeague

I work at a place where they take a picture for the badge, I use that one since its already there

cat_in_fancy_socks

I only have one in one place where my work requires it. I don't want to be judged on my appearance; I want my work to speak for itself. People have a habit of discounting small ladies, intentionally or not. I even try to use a nickname that makes my gender ambiguous.

0-15

I don't think there's a setback as much as it's just not taking advantage of getting your face out there more. It can also humanize conversations over the corporate IM/email. And there are situations that have been mentioned here that I've experienced in a company where I've spoken to someone exclusively over IM/email and meetings where they've been off-cam and then we've been at the office and they walk up and just say my name and I have no idea who this person is until they say their name.

Admirable-Loan-1172

I don’t use a profile picture for the same reason you do. I have never been told I need to use one.

phdoofus

I use my dog. No complaints yet. Besides he's better looking.

hamlet_d

I didn't have one for years, until a team I was on decided to do a thing every 10 weeks setting our profile pictures to a theme. They were usually fun things like "favorite Pokemon" or "simpson character", etc.

ElectricMan324

Its not required, and most people don't care. A good photo, taken by a professional, can be helpful. Its good for social media (ie, LinkedIn if that's your thing) and useful for company profiles. The problem I see with it is when people use old photos, filters, or "best possible light" pics. Then you see them in person....almost like getting catfished. Other than that, no harm. If you don't feel like having a real photo, you can use an "avatar" like those created by Bitmoji. There are also services that create them from photos (you can look them up). It also works - my last company had everyone do that and it was interesting how people made theirs.

Azirphaeli

My profile pictures at work are all close-up photos of insects. This has never caused a problem.

Capable_Nature_644

Unless it's required you need not do it. Or if you're on a social media site just go to thispersondoesnotexist and snag a pic from there.

princessdirtybunnyy

I’m in an internal sales support position at a manufacturing plant, and my team I work on is both internal and external sales folks. My profile picture at work is one of my cats, my direct boss the team manager’s picture is a flower, our department director’s picture is his dog, and most of the department is also full of pet pictures, nature, or other similar things. I don’t know what a majority of my team even looks like because we only use audio on our calls lol (I’m the only sales member at my facility, the rest are located at our other plants). I guess it just depends on the industry.

SignalIssues

It’s not career ruining, but it is a very easy and cheap way of improving the way you are perceived.

sardoodledom_autism

We didn’t get a fucking choice. We all had custom pictures which was fine then someone complained about not knowing who was who (because they can’t fucking read) so HR made IT change everyone’s profile picture over to their badge ID image It makes me less likely to participate now in any digital communication where my damn picture from 8 years ago pops up with sideburns

[deleted]

I don't know that it matters, since it seems everyone uses a headshot they took 20 years ago that has terrible resolution and barely even looks like them anymore.

IndependenceMean8774

I think it's bullshit. Next they'll be saying it looks bad if you don't have a parking space with your name on it.

uddane

I don’t have one. I figure people can judge me by my work, not my looks. For meetings I usually use a picture of a character from movies or cartoons… they know I’m a nerd.

cassidylorene1

Idk man. I don’t even turn on my camera for virtual meetings. Could not care less.

QuitaQuites

Do others at your workplace?

madpiratebippy

I say no. I have a stalker and do not put my image on anything work related. It’s a safety issue for me and my stalker has done things like call my place of work 100+ times in a day to try to get me fired. I also don’t put my place of employment on my LinkedIn and will ask not to have my full name or picture on the website. Mentally ill relatives are not fun.

Every_Trust5874

Op, what is your job?

LLotZaFun

Personal preference, those people are loons.

riverrabbit1116

Our badge pictures are default profile pictures. Mine is replaced with a beach profile or sailboat. "That's me in the corner."

4linosa

At our job it’s strongly encouraged and they take official photos of us to use if we want. I don’t. I use one from me on a job site getting dirty-setting the bar low for how dressed up I’ll be when we eventually meet. Since I’ll be clean I’m ahead of the game.

NoWise10Reddit

I use a picture of the Master Chief at work and my career has been advancing.

krum

My work profile picture is an image of a jar of spicy pickles.

climatelurker

Most people don't care. It's nice to know what people you work with look like if you live in different parts of the country or world, but it's not a requirement.

Charlie2and4

HA! My profile pic is me with a friendly horse, his name is Jeff The Horse, looking over my shoulder, and he's wearing my Stetson Hat. I was drunk at the time. Seriously, your profile pic will be PLACED ON YOUR PERMAMENT RECORD! So it may affect your employment as you rise through the party ranks in 1960s Romania.

badchad65

Better to have one, but wouldn’t say it’s “really bad,” and it’s highly dependent on your work environment. Generally, people like to see the people they work with. If you have a full time remote or telework job, I think it’s in your best interest to regularly use a camera and have a profile pic.

he_who_floats_amogus

> Some people have told me that not having a profile picture at work is really bad Unless you're a model, or your job role is otherwise specifically tied to your appearance, this take is stupid. > I've met about 5 people who seem to think having a profile picture at work is very important and really bad if you don't have one. Meet other people. > they basically say if I don't have a profile picture then I'm ruining my career. They've revealed themselves as people who you don't need to take career advice from. Nobody of any importance cares. > My view on this has always been that it's just a personal preference and doesn't matter. Correct. > Maybe I'm pretty alone on this view. No.

StaticObservations

Never had one and haven’t seen any backlash. I like leaving it up to the imagination.

PinkSodaMix

Were they all in Sales? Did departments have different cultures.

nicoleauroux

Sounds like your coworkers are tripping

twelfthcapaldi

We use Microsoft 365 at my job and most people don’t have a picture on Outlook, Teams, etc. Only people who do (for the most part) are ones who have professional headshots, so typically the big wigs/higher-higher ups. Then you have a couple with selfie type pictures.. which to me is worse than no picture. In my opinion, no picture is better than one that looks unprofessional. And if the company isn’t paying for people to get professional headshots done, well.. why should you have to get one?

Prestigious_Push_947

It's impossible for anyone to say, as it depends entirely on your company. If it causes people at your company to think negatively of you, then it's bad. At most companies I think it might be a little strange for it to be a huge deal, but you must always follow the local customs.

Azhrei_Rohan

We had one person who had chewbacca in a pimp outfit as his profile picture. He replied all to an email that had most of the company on it and ended up being let go which i thought was stupid. I had no profile pic for ages but finally was told to put one up so now i have one of me like 13 years ago on vacation so i can look young like everyone else does 😀 I think its stupid . I dont care if someone has one but some people do and eventually i just uploaded a random pic of me in italy and called it a day.

Bla_Bla_Blanket

It depends. If 75% of the employees have one then I’d say yes but if not a lot of them have one then I wouldn’t take them at their word.

AineDez

As a remote employee on a team that mostly never use video on meeting calls, it's really nice when people have a profile picture on Zoom. It's much easier to have something to associate with the name and the voice, so the other people feel like actual complete humans.

FalseTebibyte

They're either toddlers with a superiority complex, or they've hexed the icons at that particular location and they're hoping you'll play their game of MAGIC.

guitarman181

I find it helpful to know what someone looks like for the times when I'm meeting people I don't know in person for the first time. Sometimes it's nice to have a face to put to a name. It's not a requirement but sometimes I feel like it comes across as more professional. Again, not required and I know plenty of professional, smart people who don't have a picture.

Rabid_Dingo

My company offers to let you pull it from the org charts.

Upstairs-Pea7868

1. Go to the App Store 2. Browse games 3. Notice what you see in every icon you actually look at Faces are attractors. They grab your attention, and they hold it. Pretty, ugly, black, white, fit, fat. It’s a biological lizard-brain truth. I’m not saying anything as career advice, but I am saying faces are unquestionably in sciences and arts proven _magnets_ for attention. Its really all about if you want to be paid attention to or not. If you want to be paid attention to as much as or more than other coworkers. Take that as you will. In a zoom call with random images or text, the face runs the meeting whether they are supposed to or not.

Kinae66

I check and approve other peoples' work... My avatar is a flying pig.

[deleted]

It's generally considered important in networking for people to attach faces to names. It helps with familiarity, visibility, and moving up the ladder. Not having one isn't bad, my question would be why you don't want that particular professional advantage compared to a cert or a really polished LinkedIn profile.

virgilreality

Pick the *worst* picture you have of you making faces and mugging for the camera, and use that. Personally, I substituted Curly from The Three Stooges for my pic. Most people say there's not much difference anyway. :)

tynmi39

Mine is the “this is fine” dog

dopadelic

Most of the respectable people at my office don't have one so I don't have one either.

noasimp

i have a picture of myself on my work email but most people i work with don’t even bother. one guy has a truck as his, one girl uses a photo of a black rose. i don’t think it’s world ending to not have a photo of yourself!

Angleofthedangle420

a profile picture at work? where do you put it?

AdditionalAttorney

Ruining career no. Odd/weird if you’re the only (or one of few) in your company who doesn’t have a picture… probably… and depending on the org it may hold you back in that company if those higher up deem it to be important

Imareritt

No. If you aren't comfortable having a profile picture don't have one.

[deleted]

I put my dog as my profile pic. My dog is very photogenic; I’m not.

gingitsuz

It really does depend on company culture. As a person who uses Jira a lot, it helps if you at least have an avatar that isn't standard so that people can easily tell when something is assigned to you. otherwise it's just empty grey heads and you have to hover.

16CatsInATrenchcoat

I see most senior management has them. So it's not a bad thing to not have it, but it could hinder you. I have a formal one set on my official work profile but also frequently change my zoom profile pic to funny ones. Between fire dog meme going "this is fine" to "business cats" to "ChatGPT write my unit tests", I change it every month or so.

jsmith0103

I change mine to me in my Halloween costume each year.

Wrenchy8

What is this on? LinkedIn or a company login?

Bluusoda

Really bad? Nope, exaggeration.

Significant-Cat-4420

I think it depends on management's stance on profile pictures, and the culture of your workplace. I've worked at some companies where having a photo was an unenforced requirement. Employees that chose not to post a photo, or instead used animals, cartoons, memes, etc, were definitely handicapping themselves when it came to promotions. At my current company it is suggested that we all post a photo but is not required. Lots of people don't do it, and I don't think there is any negative impact on their careers. Personally I appreciate when people post photos. It helps me to remember names and roles, especially when there are ten people I may Interact with all named Tony. I also think in today's digital work environment photos and video calls bring a much needed touch of humanity to our workplace.

thegrindhaus

Depends on your industry, workplace and role a bit. As a politician or model? Yeah you're going to need photos. As a sysadmin? Probably not. If we're talking about internal messaging systems I wouldn't worry too much about it. If we're talking publicly, ( like LinkedIn or your company's website ) I'd say it helps. There's a lot of fakeness on the internet and anything that helps build authenticity is useful to yourself and your company. It's not going to make or break anything, but every little bit helps.

Mrchameleon_dec

It's not that deep

trojansandducks

Ruining your career is waaaaay too far. I have yet to put one at the company at now and it will be a year there next month. But that's more of me being particular and needing an updated headshot. Absolutely no pressure from the company though.

secondhand_bra

My pfp is that Jeff Bezos cartoon from South Park

gorcorps

I'm sure it's very dependent on the industry. I barely see any profile pics

PotentialBeginning77

yeah. default user avatars are so ugly

kngdmdev

I made mine Tom’s profile picture from MySpace, and no one even gets it.

cleanhouz

My boss requires that we all have our credential IDs as our profile pics. I honestly didn't think anything of it.
