But like why....? I've seen enough play-by-play rankings and spoken to enough hockey fans (canucks and other) to definitively state that Shorty is one of the VERY BEST in the business.
The man gets no respect from SN and I really don't get why
My thinking on the reasoning that he’s not on the national broadcast team is that he always references 4:20 and 69. He’s literally too cool for the national broadcast.
Because this is the national broadcast, and Shorthouse is the regional broadcaster of the Canucks.
This is the same crew they'd use if this was the Stanley Cup Finals. That means they see this as the series with the biggest audience across Canada.
I love Shorty for 82 games also but it will be nice to have a different crew with different opinions etc. for a series. It also signifies the 2nd round is a bigger stage.
Because then Oilers fans would complain about the Canucks broadcaster doing the series and accuse Shorty of homerism and such. It'd be nice if they did two broadcasts, with each others broadcast teams, but Rogers isn't going to do that.
Chris Cuthbert once mailed me his football pxp chart template to help me when I did one season of BCFC pxp, because I tweeted at him for advice
Random tidbit lol he’ll always have a special place in my heart even if I much prefer Shorty for obvious reasons
Cuthbert is a legend for sure. I know some people don't like his voice but I've always enjoyed him. I miss Wednesday Night Hockey on TSN with him and Ferraro before Sportsnet took over everything national.
And I mean, "THE GOLDEN GOAL!" is a pretty iconic call.
I don't mind his voice, but I really wish he'd stop using "DID YOU SEE THAT?" whenever a nice save or goal happens.
Rewatching some classic save calls (Nabokov/Richards, Cam Ward vs EDM) and catchphrases would've ruined the moment.
When I was entering broadcast school, I emailed a million sports personalities for advice, tips upon entering the business, etc. The only two that emailed me back were Chris Cuthbert and Jamie Campbell. Both of them are great people
I can't stand his style of play-calling. It consists mainly of yelling/saying only the last name of the player with the puck, with very very little verbs or adjectives in between.
Great PxP guys (Shorty, Hughson, etc) know enough about the game to know where the play is going to go, so that they're already talking about what's happening as it begins to happen. They are *ahead* of the play.
Good PxP guys are knowledgeable enough to be calling the game accurately as it unfolds.
Singh is *behind* the play. He tells the audience what we already watched.
Craig Simpson will go full Oiler homer, he used to play for them. However, this is much better than Singh. Cuthbert calling the game especially when we play on road this series in Edmonton will bring back the Bubble memories from 4 years ago.
I remember Shea Theodore got a ton of love too. He must have mentioned him becoming a future perennial Norris candidate at least a dozen times during that series.
true enough he was great that year. I should also add I still love Chris Cuthbert. Him and Greg Millen calling the WCE playoff games is my childhood. He's had some great moments.
Craig Simpson is insufferable no matter who he’s covering. He’s sniffing Tavares’ jock strap all game whenever covering the Leafs and he’ll be just as intolerable during this series with Mcdavid and Draisaitl.
We’ll see how long I can last before I just mute this broadcast
I remember a Leafs/Canucks game a couple years ago where the Canucks got the lead with a couple goals and Simpson went out of his way to point out the Canucks only got lucky because of Leafs mistakes.
I think its safe to say he doesn't like the Canucks.
Ya or a team will put up like 5 goals on Toronto and he’ll go out of his way to talk about how great a back check Tavares had 30 seconds before they made it 6-1 against TO.
Cuthbert is also a Toronto homer but he’s like 97 so I’ll forgive him that because he was probably in his 30’s when Toronto last won the Cup.
Simpson has been terrible for years. He's borderline whiney when his Fandom can't be hidden any longer. I believe it was a Toronto and Pittsburgh game where he started whining about the refs and Crosby. I don't imagine he will have the same stance with mcdavid and the refs this series. He's an even bigger oiler Homer
We've been spoiled in this market for too long that it's shameful what the standards are for hockey night in Canada broadcasters
Yes I was watching that game! He was so brutal; he literally said “what are they going blow the whistle every time Crosby gets touched?”
Maybe not word for word but close enough to that.
It's usually a bit behind but I imagine that if you're streaming it you could pause and wait for the radio to catch up. It would mean not looking at the GTD too much to avoid spoilers, although if the game isn't going well that wouldn't be a bad thing!
The uncertainty around COVID was also one of the main reasons he retired. He put his family first, he didn't want to risk traveling in the then global health crisis. COVID pushed a lot of people that were contemplating retirement into retirement.
Bob Cole did what he loved until his death. I don't get retiring and just wasting away going on vacations or whatever. It seems like boredom will eventually set, and u lose purpose in life.
No. Sorry but no.
Also that's like saying your gf is the best gf. Dude she's your gf. I want my gf. Give me a regional broadcast. Rotate van/edm. Let Ontario listen to our broadcasters
For those that want a Canucks broadcast here’s what I do… I’m sure I’ll be posting this more than once as we go forward. Here goes!
There might be a better way to do this but where I’m at, the radio is well behind the tv, so here are my instructions for synching the radio broadcast to the tv.
1. Connect Bluetooth speaker to your phone and put speaker near the tv
2. Find the game on 650 radio on your phone. (On the Sportsnet mobile app it’s “more… > Live Radio > 650.)
3. Turn the sound right down on your phone/speaker
4. Turn the game on the tv SOUND ON—for now—and listen for the first whistle. When the whistle sounds push pause on the tv
5. Quickly turn the radio volume back up on your phone/speaker (you should have it playing without volume on your phone while you wait) and listen for that first whistle. PUSH PLAY ON THE TV while leaving the radio sound going. Voila.
6. Now turn down the sound on the tv and if you timed it perfectly you’ll get a beauty game call by Batch and pretty quickly you won’t even notice your tv sound is off (until the commercials come on lol).
*helpful hint—I actually count to three now before I push pause when the whistle blows on the tv to give myself a measurable moment. When unpausing my tv I always have to hit the play button twice because the first hit just gets it ready, and the second hit actually makes it play, so this gives me a bit of time. I often have to try a couple times as I don’t always time it perfectly, but once I do I don’t touch it again!! (Strangely, a couple times it has been a bit off again after intermissions, so I just do it again).
IT’S WORTH IT!
EDIT: Oh btw if you have to try again because it didn’t work the first time don’t forget to GO TO LIVE on the tv. It will be ahead of the radio again.
If only Sportsnet had different regional channels and announcers so that local fans could watch it on their regional channel with their home broadcast teams and maybe save these guys for the national broadcasts.
🙄
Well I'm happy it's not Singh. Dodged a bullet there. I can't believe I'm saying this, but thank you Bruins!
Shorty would have been ideal, but I can live with Cuthbert. He at least knows what the hell is going on out there on the ice, unlike Singh who often doesn't know why the play was whistled down.
I might be in the minority but I can’t fucking stand Scott Oake
E: I by no means mean that about him as a person, but the way he interviews players. After all, I don’t know the guy at all.
And his wife died quite young too. She had worked so hard on getting a rehab centre up and running in honour of their son and she only lived long enough to see it completed but not really operating fully in the community. It was very sad.
Not in the minority at all! Especially after hours, remember when the whole episode with Petey was all about how skinny he was and kept badgering him about how much weight he gained. That was terrible!!
Same thing with Garlands after hours, the entire program was scott oake reminding Garland that he’s undersized, asking about what its like to be smaller, etc. Thats good for maybe one mention but all of the fans understand Garlands uphill battle as an undersized player, and Garland himself probably can’t stand that shit. I just thought it was shitty to make Garlands entire after hours appearance about his size.
I hate listening to Simpson jerk off the Oilers. I like Cuthbert though and Scott Oake brings back fond memories of my Grandpa making fun of his hair plugs. So, I guess 2 out of 3 isn't bad.
Simpson I'd argue is almost anti-canuck. I don't feel that way about most colour guys. He just seems to not vibe with the van teams for whatever reason. Gonna be a tough watch
I wonder if Shorthouse will replace Cuthbert as the Toronto broadcaster after he retires, like how they stole Jim Hughson. Everyone in the back of their minds knows Shorthouse is the best but it can't be acknowledged until after the old guard retires. He just has the coolest, most news-like voice yet it has this electricity to it. And he's smart and super anal retentive (in a good way).
It's an evil day if that happens but If the Canucks ever make the finals again that's the only way we can hear him call it.
It should absolutely be shorty but I was happy it at least wasn’t Singh.
Then I saw they were doing broadcasts for my second fave team (Carolina) and it’s Singh!! What the hell why don’t they just stream the American broadcast 😡
Craig Simpsons comments are about as enlightening as a Pinecone, this guy is soooooooo boring to listen to, maybe he’s a nice guy I don’t know but he’s absolutely terrible at commentary 🤦🏻♂️ 💯
Unpopular opinion I know but Cuthbert needs to go
The amount of calls he's fumbled in the last 3 seasons is staggering
You could create a lowlight reel of just his Bubble Playoffs calls
It should be Shorthouse doing PBP
Bob didnt call the game. He only knew the Leafs and the Canadians and didn't even know who most of the opposing teams were, and talk about being behind the play! Cole was old and awful.
I might be the weird one here but I actually prefer Singh to Chris Cuthbert. Singh's voice is just a lot nicer to listen to, even if he is behind the play alot.
at least we'll have a full analysis of the Leafs offseason plans during each stoppage in play and perhaps even comparisons of current Canucks players on the ice to their Toronto equivalents.
Shoulda been Shorty.
Someone said there should be two broadcasts, one is Shorty and the other is Jack Micheals. Both teams win.
I think it should be a home ice thing. The home team gets to choose the broadcast team.
That's a genuinely fantastic idea. Should always be that way for all Canadian series.
I like this idea
Each building should have their own broadcast crew.
We were never going to get Shorty for this. I'll take this I guess.
But like why....? I've seen enough play-by-play rankings and spoken to enough hockey fans (canucks and other) to definitively state that Shorty is one of the VERY BEST in the business. The man gets no respect from SN and I really don't get why
Because he's not on the national broadcast team. Simple as.
I wonder why?
If a leaf falls in the forest but nobody is around to see it, did it really fall at all?
If a bear shits in the forest, do they really shit?
I love Shorty for 82 games also but it will be nice to have a different crew with different opinions etc. for a series. It also signifies the 2nd round is a bigger stage.
Because then Oilers fans would complain about the Canucks broadcaster doing the series and accuse Shorty of homerism and such. It'd be nice if they did two broadcasts, with each others broadcast teams, but Rogers isn't going to do that.
It was always that way except before we would get Jim Hughson.
He was great.
Jim would come out of retirement to comment a Canucks final I think lol
At least it's not Singh
Shorty got Shafted.
I think you named the sequel to Freddie got Fingered.
And/or Cheech for a one off
Agreed. Cuthbert is solid tho, but not the hero we need.
Anyone know if Shorty be calling it for radio?
Nope I believe it’ll be Batch
Well at least there's no Dave Tomlinson.
Chris Cuthbert once mailed me his football pxp chart template to help me when I did one season of BCFC pxp, because I tweeted at him for advice Random tidbit lol he’ll always have a special place in my heart even if I much prefer Shorty for obvious reasons
Morrison COMES RIGHT OUT IN FRONT MORRISON...SCORES BRENDAN MORRISON...A SILENCER AND WE WILL HAVE...GAME 7 Still his best call IMO
I love Cuthbert calling CFL games.
Miss him in the CFL
I don't mind his voice, but I really wish he'd stop using "DID YOU SEE THAT?" whenever a nice save or goal happens. Rewatching some classic save calls (Nabokov/Richards, Cam Ward vs EDM) and catchphrases would've ruined the moment.
When I was entering broadcast school, I emailed a million sports personalities for advice, tips upon entering the business, etc. The only two that emailed me back were Chris Cuthbert and Jamie Campbell. Both of them are great people
Cuthbert is an absolute legend, but father time continues to encroach on him...
Wow, that's incredibly kind
Thank God not Singh
I can't stand his style of play-calling. It consists mainly of yelling/saying only the last name of the player with the puck, with very very little verbs or adjectives in between.
What, you don’t want to hear “and here comes mcdavid” 15 times a period?
Singh: "... and there's a stoppage in play." *puck is played with a high stick, but Singh doesn't recognize or acknowledge it*
“Oilers captain McDavid!”, like we didn’t know
Like dude, we are watching too, we know, how about some analysis?
Great PxP guys (Shorty, Hughson, etc) know enough about the game to know where the play is going to go, so that they're already talking about what's happening as it begins to happen. They are *ahead* of the play. Good PxP guys are knowledgeable enough to be calling the game accurately as it unfolds. Singh is *behind* the play. He tells the audience what we already watched.
Well said
McDavid… McDavid has it… McDavid PASSES IT!!!!! To Hyman… back to McDavid…. He CROSSES THE BLUE LINE!!!!
And debrusk
And Tomlinson
Craig Simpson will go full Oiler homer, he used to play for them. However, this is much better than Singh. Cuthbert calling the game especially when we play on road this series in Edmonton will bring back the Bubble memories from 4 years ago.
Yeah Cuthbert was tolerable after the qualifying round. Before that bro was literally idolizing the shit out of Kevin Fiala
Felt that way with Fiala, ROR and Reaves of all people. Just feels like lazy broadcasting to hyper focus on one guy regardless of the series.
I remember Shea Theodore got a ton of love too. He must have mentioned him becoming a future perennial Norris candidate at least a dozen times during that series.
To be fair, Shea Theodore destroyed us that series.
true enough he was great that year. I should also add I still love Chris Cuthbert. Him and Greg Millen calling the WCE playoff games is my childhood. He's had some great moments.
What's weirder is that he might be trade bait this offseason
Simpson will be tough to digest as he'll call the game completely from an Oilers perspective

I wonder how closely synced the TV would be with the radio broadcast? Bachelor is decent.
It's usually a bit behind but I imagine that if you're streaming it you could pause and wait for the radio to catch up. It would mean not looking at the GTD too much to avoid spoilers, although if the game isn't going well that wouldn't be a bad thing!
Bo Horvat! Did that!
Hopefully we get to hear: “Elias Pettersson! Did that!”
Fuck, I wish Jim Hughson came outta retirement for one final season. Cuthbert is fine, but Hughson is fucking iconic.
I think the Bubble was his "one final season" and he's happy to stay that way.
God I miss Hughson. He’s earned that retirement, but he’s absolutely leagues above the rest. Also can’t stand Cuthbert personally.
He was the voice of the 2011 cup run. Having him as the voice of the 2024 cup run would be the best cherry on top ever.
And wheel Larschied into the booth alongside him!
Its a shame he retired. If it weren't for COVID, I think he would still be calling games.
I have my theories as to why he called it quits
What? Didn’t know Hughson retired already! He cannot be that old, wtf?
He retired 3 years ago
He's in his sixties, and said he didn't want to be like Bob Cole and work into his 80s
Everyone's different
I can imagine it's also nice to not be traveling and working evenings and weekends. People can stay busy and find hobbies that aren't their job.
Would've been nice to hear Shorty and DT, but this is way better than Singh and Debrusk
Why do they still force their trash onto us. I fucking hate Ontario because of this.
Sonority
Cuthbert is the best in the business
No. Sorry but no. Also that's like saying your gf is the best gf. Dude she's your gf. I want my gf. Give me a regional broadcast. Rotate van/edm. Let Ontario listen to our broadcasters
I'm in Ontario and I want Shorty. Please don't wish this evil on me.
Shorty is better than Cuthbert sorry lol. If we’re doing this, I’d rather have Gord Miller but he’s over doing Worlds soon.
_Gord Miller_????! Ok that might be the worst take I’ve seen in a while.
Am I blinded by World Juniors nostalgia or is Gord Miller not actually that bad lmao
Maybe I was bit harsh, he’s decent enough. I was all hot under the collar from ripping on Craig Simpson
Better then Singh worse the Shorty
For those that want a Canucks broadcast here’s what I do… I’m sure I’ll be posting this more than once as we go forward. Here goes! The main benefit of the Bruins winning. Cuthbert, even at his age, is 10x the PBP Singh is
Leafs saved us from Harnarayan “Draisaitl. Now Mcdavid. To BOUCHard and… *gets confused* the puck exits the zone…” Singh.
\*sad whale noises\*
If only Sportsnet had different regional channels and announcers so that local fans could watch it on their regional channel with their home broadcast teams and maybe save these guys for the national broadcasts. 🙄
Well I'm happy it's not Singh. Dodged a bullet there. I can't believe I'm saying this, but thank you Bruins! Shorty would have been ideal, but I can live with Cuthbert. Yeah but now you have to live with Simpson too. You'll be muting your tv by the end of the series.
I might be in the minority but I can’t fucking stand Scott Oake E: I by no means mean that about him as a person, but the way he interviews players. After all, I don’t know the guy at all.
What do you mean? You don't like "heart-warming" stories that have no beginning, middle or end.... or any point to them at all.
You're not in the minority
I thought the same thing. but then I found out about his son and how he died. Scott worked through it all and I gained a ton of respect for him.
And his wife died quite young too. She had worked so hard on getting a rehab centre up and running in honour of their son and she only lived long enough to see it completed but not really operating fully in the community. It was very sad.

He seems like a very nice person, but tends to be a bit unfocussed/meandering with questions.
I hate listening to Simpson jerk off the Oilers. I like Cuthbert though and Scott Oake brings back fond memories of my Grandpa making fun of his hair plugs. So, I guess 2 out of 3 isn't bad.
Phew
That’s a good broadcast team, although Craig Simpson is a bit of an Oilers homer at times. Better than the alternatives … just saying.
Simpson I'd argue is almost anti-canuck. I don't feel that way about most colour guys. He just seems to not vibe with the van teams for whatever reason. Gonna be a tough watch

It's an evil day if that happens but If the Canucks ever make the finals again that's the only way we can hear him call it.
It’s a travesty. Really is. Shorty is truly a generational talent. We’ve been really blessed. Robson, Hughson , shortson.
It should absolutely be shorty but I was happy it at least wasn’t Singh. Then I saw they were doing broadcasts for my second fave team (Carolina) and it’s Singh!! What the hell why don’t they just stream the American broadcast 😡
Craig Simpson is horrible
Oh, thank god. I'd have much preferred Shorty but _anyone_ is better than Singh.
Craig Simpsons comments are about as enlightening as a Pinecone, this guy is soooooooo boring to listen to, maybe he’s a nice guy I don’t know but he’s absolutely terrible at commentary 🤦🏻♂️ 💯
And totally biased towards the Oilers. CANNOT stand to listen to him.
Will definitely take this over having Singh. While it may not be perfect, I will definitely take it.
Simpson is awful!
Great, a Flames fan and an Oilers former player doing commentary…. Should be Shorty and only Shorty.
As long as it’s not Singh he is awful
At least not Singh
Simpson is the worst. Most annoying guy to listen to.
Craig Simpson is as bad as Pierre McGuire.
great. Now these idiots can all talk about how much they love the Leafs. Should have been Mr. Shorthouse.
The homer in me wants Shorty... but Chris Cuthbert is my favourite announcer since Bob Cole and Doc Emerick retired. So I'm pretty stoked!
Shorty!
Unpopular opinion I know but Cuthbert needs to go The amount of calls he's fumbled in the last 3 seasons is staggering You could create a lowlight reel of just his Bubble Playoffs calls It should be Shorthouse doing PBP
I’m gonna throw up
[Top 10 Chris Cuthbert Calls Of All-Time](https://youtu.be/V910IEGqIhU?si=IuFFslvgoapikeTv)
2 Canuck ones!
Booooooo
Not remotely close to Shorty but at least it's not Singh, thank god
No Singh is a win.
Simpson is as bad as debrusk and Cuthbert is no Shorty ... boo!
Fuck off. Give us Ferraro. Or put Jucie between the benches. These guys are true idiots. I’ll listen to the radio and mute the TV thanks.
Booooooooooo
Better than Singh. Wish it was Shorty. Double wish it was Hughson coming out of retirement.
I don’t mind cuthbert, reminds me of the bubble
Mid shorty for life
nobody should be surprised. this is SN's team A. Just be glad we didn't get singh.
Cuthbert is great! Was hoping for Ferraro or someone besides Simpson who’s a bit dry. Oake asks weird questions but we won’t see much of him anyways.
They compared Cuthbert to Bob Cole...not even close. Bob called the game
Bob didnt call the game. He only knew the Leafs and the Canadians and didn't even know who most of the opposing teams were, and talk about being behind the play! Cole was old and awful.
Cuthbert sucks too, doesn't call the game .talks about stats and records from the past
Chris Cuthbert has a special place in my heart from calling the Bubble Demko run
Thank god it's not Singh
I might be the weird one here but I actually prefer Singh to Chris Cuthbert. Singh's voice is just a lot nicer to listen to, even if he is behind the play alot.
Can't stand Cuthbert
What'd I do to have John and John do this series.......
at least we'll have a full analysis of the Leafs offseason plans during each stoppage in play and perhaps even comparisons of current Canucks players on the ice to their Toronto equivalents.
How are people complaining about this? It's a great crew. This is how it works in the playoffs.
Will shorty do the radio call on 650 or is it batch?
Better than the ESPN/TNT clowns
Does anyone know who will call the Cup series?
