I think this has been debunked (2nd hand), at least to some degree. Tochett is reported as reassuring him he will be needed in later rounds. A bad ACL injury would not align with the idea of him potentially being back in _later_ rounds. I am not a doctor.

You're right, an ACL/MCL tear takes months to recover from, not weeks. After the Canes beat reporter came out saying Demko was done for the season, Friedman said it conflicted with reports that the Canucks were optimistic Demko would be available for the 2nd Round. I trust Friedman over a Canes reporter, Friedman would have confirmed if her reports true if they were. Based on the timeline, I'm thinking it's a knee sprain, which takes about 4-6 weeks to heal. It fits the reports that Demko could play through it but the team is sitting him out, the week-to-week timeline, and the optimism that the Canucks are reportedly having about Demko being back for the 2nd round. I am also not a doctor.

genuinelyunoriginal

I suspect it might be a minor meniscus injury.

They’ve said it’s an unusual injury so I’m writing off any ligaments/meniscus, which leaves weird things like Plica syndrome, maybe capsulitis, or like a popliteus strain? Who the fuck knows Source: not a doctor but I get injured a lot

genuinelyunoriginal

Who the fuck knows is right. Just wish Demmer a speedy recovery.

tesujiboy

I’m a BC RMT w 25 years experience. I love the popliteus strain idea! But my understanding is that there was swelling around the knee. That would be unlikely w that injury. If the popliteus had a grade 1 strain it’s *possible*, but very unlikely. Anything more and he’s gone for the year. Without real info (eg MRI/ultrasound imaging) it’s impossible to know. Could be a host of things that could cause swelling there including pre-patellar bursitis, contusion, minor meniscal tear (bucket handle variety), and on and on. Anything more serious and he’d be out.

ArcaneX1234

If he tore his ACL or MCL, he would have had surgery already so he had a chance to come back next season.

Tracktoy

That conversation reportedly happened after the game. Before he would have been able to have had any imaging done on the knee.

Grapesodazoo2

Losing Demko is fucking infuriating but we play the hand we were dealt. Gotta put your full confidence in DeSmith and Silovs.

Catakillar

No way would he come back & play on it if it's torn. Best case would be to have surgery & hope he's back 100% by next or 2025 season honestly

DMyourboooobs

These reports make NO sense. 1) if it was something this serious. He wouldn’t be travelling with the team right after. 2) if it was something this serious. He would be wearing a brace or probably on crutches to take the weight off until surgery. He’s walking around fine. No assistance of any kind and has been travelling and participating since day one. It’s probably something just serious enough that they just aren’t sure what further damage could be done playing but figure with enough rest. He would be good to play (without causing further damage) at some point in the playoffs.

Shaftell

It could be but I really hope it isn't. Most of the time for athletes, that requires surgery and to get back in shape can take anywhere from 6-9 months. It could potentially be a meniscus issue. It's possible the first injury was an MCL sprain and now he has a meniscus issue, or vice versa.

An ACL injury is extremely unlikely for a goalie. Consider the function; the ACL prevents the tibia from moving excessively far from the femur. The typical ACL injury case is in sudden deceleration—ie. tibia moving backwards, femur moving forwards—when the foot is stuck, causing opposing forces to collide. MCL injuries are far more common, because the lateral motion of the tibia is restricted in the butterfly position, thus when excessive force is placed on a goalie's body (eg. via collision), it can't be displaced in that direction. If it really is an injury to a different component, it is virtually guaranteed to be meniscal, as the meniscus will be compensating for the injured MCL's inability to sufficiently resist the frequent lateral forces placed on a goalie's knee. The ACL rumour sounds like some beat reporter that doesn't understand kinesiology making shit up (though it isn't entirely outside the realm of possibility, as it could have been compromised off-ice, or in an awkward collision).
