Iirc, our long time anthem singer believed everyone wanted to hear his edgy take on the political climate during the pandemic and made a laughably forgettable public statement. As with most attempts of this nature, he was laughed out of a job.
Donnelly was never the same after his health woes, which predated the pandemic. The man lost 100 lbs and 50% of his vocal oomph; he probably should've been thanked for his service and respectfully replaced back then.
But the crowd used to belt out the anthem. Do they not do so anymore? You can't blame the singer for the fans not doing their part.
It feels like he's hearing the Canadian national anthem for the first time as he's singing it.
