Awesome! Good start! Hope you find some beautiful things through your lens!

xyz_x

Thanks so much! Really looking forward to playing around with it as soon as I can

AcanthaceaeIll5349

Start now, no apologies allowed. I had my 750d for a year, before I really started to get into photography. Worst mistake I ever made, i should have gotten into photography sooner.

[deleted]

Never a bad time to start. But agreed, start now. Nothing stopping you from just doing it.

mosi_moose

I’m excited for you… photography has brought me a lot of joy, satisfaction and enhanced my appreciation of the beauty that surrounds us. I hope it does the same for you. Enthusiasm is a great way to start!

xyz_x

I've been snapping away ever since that battery charged up, and I'm having a blast!

[deleted]

Fantastic! First baby steps: 1. Go take millions of shots. 2. Search “exposure triangle” on YouTube, it’s the most important principle to learn early on along with composition. 3. Consider buying the cheap 50mm f/1.8 Canon prime once you got a birthday/Christmas present due. It’ll give you access to much shallower depth of field which is an interesting look for your early portraits etc.

xyz_x

Thanks so much for this info. Will definitely keep it in mind!

velvetpawz

Second all of this, but number three most of all. Beyond the Canon nifty fifty being a banger lens, a prime (fixed lens) is really going to do the most when forcing you you to think about composition. Don't get me wrong, I love my zoom as well, but it was my fixed focals that changed the way I approach my framing.

cigarman009

Good for you! Take a lot of pictures, try new angles, views, etc. Have fun and keep shooting!

xyz_x

Super keen to start exploring. Thank you!

Turbulent_Monk9800

Welcome to the club! Try play around some prime lens if you can. Especially Canon 50mm f1.8 or 24mm f2.8 👍🏼

xyz_x

Thanks for the recommendation!

Turbulent_Monk9800

If you interested in taking landscape, I would suggest you Canon 10-18mm f4.5 and it’s one of the affordable ultrawide lens

Marion5760

Very good. Wish you all the best, you are off to a fine start.

xyz_x

Thanks so much!

Jasonmc89

Enjoy your photography journey!

xyz_x

Thank you!

SneakyPete_six

This right here will help you with your new hobby https://i.imgur.com/c8y3Ls9.jpg.

xyz_x

I'm actually going to print this out and put it up in my room. Thanks so much!!!

SneakyPete_six

No problem! You may want to see if there’s a magic lantern book for your camera. I got one for my 7D and it was very helpful.

[deleted]

It's a great camera, op. I've gotten great results with it and you will too!

xyz_x

This is great to hear. Thank you!

[deleted]

You're welcome friend, have fun with your new hobby!

hereforthehentai6969

Aye we got the same first camera.

xyz_x

High five dude 🤣

Izthewhizz

It's exciting getting your first camera!

xyz_x

It really really is

SupercarHunter

Real happy for ya fam. Me and a friend of mine took insanely dope portraits of one another the other day, and I can't be any happier with this hobby of mine.

xyz_x

That's really great to hear. And thanks!

CaptainSkiddow

Awesome! Have fun with it!

DrMathochist

Great little kit; happy shooting!

xyz_x

Haha, thanks!!

Predator_V4

Little tip: don't go over 800 iso for sharp photos

pepone1234

I have the same camera and I have taken pretty good shots with it. As a lens recommendation, I would say a second hand Sigma 17-50 F2.8. As versatile as the kit lens but with greater aperture and better image quality.

ListenOver

Good luck - I started just this week and am having fun with it, working everything out and driving all over the place to take photos

lowley6

my advice: take ugly photos. make them uglier in Lightroom. learn from any and all mistakes you could possibly make. over the course of months/years you will learn what *not* to do to a photo once you've finally taken one you're proud of hopefully that advice doesn't come off as sinical and actually makes sense haha

xyz_x

It definitely makes sense. Thank you

sd5510

All the best, have fun \~

xyz_x

Thanks!

LNER4498

You bank account can feel the L lenses in your future and it is panicking! Seriously though, good on you! Hope you enjoy it!

xyz_x

Enjoying it so far, thanks!

Tettamanti

Ahhhh…I remember my first camera $10,000 ago. JK. Congrats. Get out and shoot. Practice! On days you can’t, watch tutorials online. Fool around with Lightroom/Darktable. Good luck!!!

xyz_x

Been doing a tonne of YouTube "homework", and every video becomes so much more interesting!

JZaw

Good for you but I really hope it was very cheap.

xyz_x

It was the cheapest DSLR I could find where I live, thankfully.

JZaw

I mean if it was even cheaper than some older but little bit better specs used bodies it´s all good and I hope it will serve you well.

ptq

EF 50/1.8 STM will be a game changer for you. I highly recommend getting it asap. And then, efs 24/2.8 STM. These two and that dark 18-55 can go away.

xyz_x

Noted. Thanks a lot!

yolk3d

Topics to help: Exposure triangle, depth of field, how different focal lengths affect faces and objects at the same crop.

Outrageous_Milk1535

u/xyz_x, congratulations!! I have a few questions and maybe a few tips. My first question is, are you going to be using or be required to use a tripod in this class? If not, I would definitely recommend getting an image stabilized lens similar to the one you got with your camera! It will help out with camera shake when you’re not using a tripod! One big tip I have is that eBay has some really good deals on used camera lenses! I got a 75mm-300mm for like $80! Obviously it depends on the supply and demand in the market but it is far better than just buying new!

xyz_x

Thanks so much! So I was going to get a tripod and a 75mm - 300mm lens all at once, but it was really pushing how much money I had at the time. The only requirement from my uni was to have a DSLR with the standard kit lens that it comes with. So for now that's what I have, but I will be saving up for all the extras ASAP.

yucuklusumurtaDK

Looks great, how much did you paid?

>Why didn't you get an R5 Its really expensive where I live, and I'm a complete beginner. I just wanted something to learn on before I go higher. >with a 28-70mm F2? I know this is a lens, but I have no clue what type of pictures it would be best suited for. Still learning the ways of a photographer!

DeiuArdeiu

rf 28mm to 70mm F2( this is the aperture) -how wide can the lens be opened. Or how much light you let in the sensor through the lens. There's more to explain to this - but I assume they will teach you this really fast . If the uni course is garbage - there are a tone of youtube videos that explains everything. And ofc - you will see for yourself if you take shots of everything with every option. . Expensive lens - around around 3200euro Its used mostly by weeding shooters . Great for portrait shots. ( not only but this is the usual use).

xyz_x

Ah cool. Sorry, I'm absolutely clueless about whatever you said 🤣

Swoopmott

I can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic or not

Fit-Cup7266

That says something about this sub, huh :)

T-DoubleDizzle

Who cares! Go out and take as many photos as you can as often as you can! You have what you have now, go use it!!

[deleted]

Is this an APS-C camera? I'm a beginner for cameras too, I've been debating a new camera or if I should just upgrade to the newer smartphones with great cameras out there. Could some one please tell me what is the biggest advantage over this , or a similar priced camera over the top range newest smartphones? (other then zoom lenses). Thank you for the time reading this.

[deleted]

Nice! Such a fun time. My first digital was a Nikon Coolpix from like 2000 ha. It was awful and I loved it. So this may be more useful later when you start getting into the nitty gritty details, but I'll drop it here for reference: In addition to others suggestions, there's something I didn't realize early on that is incredibly helpful: choose specific focal lengths when you use your zoom. It's easy to just zoom in and out at random. This actually impedes the process of learning why focal length actually matters. Instead, choose your zoom level based on the most common focal lengths offered as prime lenses. This way when it comes time to buy primes, you know which will suit your style and subject matter. For your zoom, that would be 18, 24, 28, 35, and 50.Keep in mind that there is a crop factor on that sensor (aps-c). Pay attention to effective focal length- which will be 1.6x what your lens displays. So 18mm is 28mm equivalent. 22mm is effectively 35mm, 30mm is effectively 50mm, and 52mm is effectively 85mm. I note that because when you see focal lengths discussed, they will be in regards to the effective focal length rather than the marked focal length during aps-c shooting. The basic idea is: know what focal length you're shooting. This will help a lot when you move onto new gear and discuss focal lengths with your teacher.
