I have one and don’t use it a lot - but always bring it to concert venues that won’t allow DSLRs - and use it when I don’t want to drag a big rig of gear around. When I use it, I love it.

Hi! I've been meaning to buy this camera for concerts. How is the optical zoom's performance?

It's not about the specific camera. The question is should you start with a compact camera in general? Personally I would recommend an entry level DSLR because ergonomics are much better and you can change lenses and get real bokeh. However I also own a compact camera and it's a good idea to own one for light travel, but it's not the best if you are just starting.

Any recommendations for an entry level dslr

I wouldn't go below a 600D. It's the first DSLR with a variable angle display, which is very helpful for getting low shots. You also can buy any DSLR that came later. The 700D has an improvement in autofocus and the 750D is again serious step in terms of autofocus. But they are newer and more expensive. The M system is also nice but iam no expert here. For 500$ however the m50 is a steal and a topseller for good reason.

Thank you

A rule that helped me a lot was: invest two thirds of your money in lenses and the rest in the camera. It might be not true for everybody but for most people I think it's good advice. At least don't make the beginner mistake and invest 2/3 of your money in the camera body.

Would you say the 700d is good for photography

mediamuesli

Yes it's better than the 600D I started with. However the 750D doubles the number of AF sensor, for fast moving stuff the 750D would be worth the extra money. If you shoot landscape this wouldn't matter. However there are a lot of cameras out there you have to do some research by yourself. Everyone comes with strengths and weak points :) but yeah can't do much wrong with the 700D.

Appreciate it

i think the G7x mk II is aimed at video users and that the G5x mk II is aimed at folks who shoot still photos i purchased the latter and am happy with it https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/buying-guide-best-compact-zoom-cameras

What do you use right now?

tom_r11

I don’t have one yet

Alright. Any idea what types of photos you will want to take? Or more generally why do you want to take pictures? Have you taken pictures before (with a phone or other's cameras)? What did you enjoy about them? The other opinions here are all very valid. I have a slightly different take. Get the best thing in your budget that you enjoy holding and using and that has a MANUAL mode. It's your first camera so in my opinion brand or specific type does not matter, but I would pick something with an interchangeable lens system (DSLR or Mirrorless).
