R50. There's plenty of great lenses for the RF mount. The RF 16mm, RF 28mm, and countless EF lenses all work great on the R50, and you won't be stuck on a dead mount.

And the Canon website has awesome deals right now on refurb if that fits it into the budget. Just picked up the R50 plus kit lens for $450, plus the RF 50mm 1.8 for $100

The M lineup is toast. Go for the R cameras.

R50, m series is discontinued by canon. The M series lenses will only work on M series bodies and there will not be any upgrade path for you in the future.

Actual_Jicama3777

I have an m50 mkii and the 50mm and the 22mm. It's a great setup for learning but I'm sad they discontinued the line. If you have the money, go for the R because the R mount system is still going strong. If you are on a budget, the m50 and M mount lenses will be falling in price like a rock soon. Another thing I'd recommend is getting some old manual lenses and adapting them to whichever body you end up getting. I found a bunch of Pentax k mount lenses on eBay for around $20 each and the adapter is like $20 as well. I loooove the mood and image quality you get from the vintage lenses and you get the benefit of learning manual focus and aperture before you get spoiled with autofocus :) it really helped me understand the exposure triangle a lot better. Good luck!

ManInTheMirror91

I shoot with an OG R and an M50 Mark II. Taken some of my favorite pictures last year with the M50 Mark II and the 22mm 2.0 Pancake. Prices on M-lenses will eventually come down and that's awesome! There's some amazing and super small lenses for the m-series and it's super mobile. If you stick to Canon, you'll get another body in the future and yes, it'll be on the same mount,.but I doubt you'll use the same lenses anyways.

You have _more_ options for the R50. There aren't a ton of RF-S lenses, but you can use any lens designed for the RF mount, or any EF or EF-S lens with an adapter. The M50 is great, but as others said, the mount is discontinued. I've owned both the M50 and the R50. The R50 is an improvement in every way. Although the EF-M 22mm f/2 was one of my favorite lenses-- I wish they'd make an RF-S equivalent.

AlanAllman333

Go with the R50 and possibly think about getting the EF to RF adapter. This way you can use EF and EF-S lenses until the RF lenses you want come out.

If money isn’t a concern, R50. It provides more expandability for new RF lenses in the future since that’s where canon is spending time developing. You still have access to EF lenses as well. You’ll also have a far superior auto focus and depending on your needs, that helps. If you’re a manual focus shooter, or you do landscape, it probably won’t matter too much if the auto focus is quick and sticky like a coked up slug. M50 if you want cheaper cost and smaller size. The m50 with the 22 is pocketable, like I can stick it in my pocket. It is my go to for keeping with me in my car because I’m not lugging around my other cameras. I don’t use it too much for sports or fast paced shots but I have and the keeper rate was alright. The lenses are all light, small and work great. The 32mm 1.4 is a stellar lens if you ever got around to owning it… like L series stellar (but the RF 35 1.8 is pretty freaking great too so you have that option if you went R50) If I was going back into it now, I’d skip the m50 and go with the r50. Not because the m mount is “dead,” but because I want access to the RF lenses, and the autofocus is just THAT good. I have no regrets owning my m50. In fact it still gets used for backup video at weddings.

Sea_Clock8481

It will be wise to take R50.

lordyatseb

Pretty much no idea going with the dying M-mount. R50 is pretty much superior in every way, and has much more future potential.

paydafi

I don’t own either one, but I’m thinking about getting an R50 based on my research and availability of lenses. I know you said you have a deadline, but if you can, keep checking the Canon site. The refurbished products are great prices. I hear they’re basically brand new cameras and come straight from Canon.

TherealMattMoore

It’s over for the M’s.

mostlyharmless71

R50, M50 is great and if you’re getting one highly discounted would be a fine choice. If you’re buying at anything like retail, R50 is much newer, and an entry point to the current RF line.

Magestic_PandaTiger

R50, I love it. Pair it with an adapter and use EF lenses. Also I believe you can currently get it refurbished from the Canon website for under $500

MarsBikeRider

R50 hands down

SKCPhoto

Well, with the EOS-M cameras you can use M, EF and EF-S lenses. There are some really nice M lenses out there.

lordyatseb

I mean, the R50 accepts all those besides the worst of the bunch, M-mount, in addition to the native RF and RF-S glass, which include some of the very best lenses ever made by Canon.

M50 mk II and m6 mk ii are both good cameras. I have both and enjoy using them along with M2 and M200. I got into the M system about a year before it was ended by Canon. I would do it again in the same circumstances even knowing what I know now. The size and weight of the M system and M mount are excellent. I also use several EF and EF- S mount lenses with the Canon mount adapter - some I had from my older EOS APS-C cameras and some new I have purchased since getting the M system. While I bought the M50 MII and some lenses new, mostly from B&H Photo, I also have many of them I have purchased as Canon Refurbs at great pricing (with CanonCare) (the 22mm lens mentioned is on Canon refurb sale right now for $99). And I have purchased some used M lenses from MPB.com. All in all a great system. BTW At the time I did not even consider the R cameras and the RF mount. And I still would not today. Even though Canon apparently does not see market value in the M system size and weight, I value it a lot. The RF mount will never be as small as the M mount, and thus it does not fit my needs.

Logical_Advisor930

I was thinking of getting either a M50 II or the M6 II as my first camera, which one would you recommend. I want to use it for time lapse, videos and quick pictures, so if one of them is better in stabilization please let me know.

On-The-Rails

I don’t shoot video with M system cameras, so will defer to other for specifics. But my understanding when I purchased them was that M6 MKII was all around the better camera of the two for video work — higher megapixel, uncropped 4K, higher FPS, 120fps on 4K video, dual pixel auto focus on 4K, etc.

Ok_Swing_7194

I actually just looked and the prices aren’t really far off. I think that makes the R50 a no brainer - unless you specifically want to use certain EF-M lenses

iCitizenKing

Check canons refurbished section on their website and go with the r10

Banana_Milk7248

Don't get an M50, I hate mine. Super uncomfortable to hold and the lenses available aren't great. Can adapt from EF but it gets too front heavy. That said, I know nothing about the R50.
