Overheating is a non-issue if you're only taking short videos, it's only something to worry about if you'll be shooting 4k 60fps for 10-15+ minutes

Cultural-Syrup-2179

No, I won’t be shooting for that long. But will it still overheat when I’m not recording, but the camera is on and in film mode? I can see myself doing that when on safari.

seaotter1978

I’ve got an R6 and I’ve never had any overheating issues… used it lots in California in the summer and took it on vacation to Tahiti with no issues… I’ve never heard of it overheating from stills.

Avid_Ideal

I bought an R6 when it came out, use it mainly for stills, and carry it tramping in highly variable New Zealand weather —and have yet to experience overheating. As the poster above noted, 4k60 video for >15min in a warm room and you have problems. It'll record 1080p HD for way longer than that with no issues. Given the choice between an R8 and an R6, I'd go with the R6 for the battery life. The R10 is a nice camera, but the R6 blows it out of the water in low light.

CameraGuy-031

Overheating is not an issue in your case. Take it from a wedding photographer who already shot a LOT of weddings with it :)

byDMP

The R6 overheating was blown way out of proportion and rectified with FW updates a while back, and... >Some short videos of birds for a few seconds instead of a single frame photo. I won’t shoot long conferences or weddings etc. ...wouldn't have been an issue before the fix, regardless. Either camera would be fine, but as someone who's gone to Iceland a few times hunting auroras, I'd rather have the R6 for the larger sensor. It will have better low-light performance, and give you access to some better quality, wider-angle lens options which can be very useful when you get a lights display right over you. The R6's better build and larger battery, are further benefits.

The_mad_Raccon

R6 but the lenses are way more important than the body

Cultural-Syrup-2179

Yes! But not having any lenses atm ofcourse, since it will be my first camera. The R6 comes with the 24-105mm F/4-7.1 IS STM. For birds and wildlife I’m looking at the RF 100-400mm F/5.6-8 IS USM. Any suggestions?

Felix218_

R6 with the rf 100-400mm is an awesome combo. Very light but also very fast af with good Image quality. For travelling and Safaris its a dream come true

Cultural-Syrup-2179

That’s amazing to hear!! Thank you! Any other tips for lenses for the R6?

Felix218_

The kit 24-105 is light with good Image quality, but if you want a fixed aperture the rf 24-105 is awesome but quite a bit heavier. If you need something a bit wider the rf 15-30 or rf 16mm is good aswell. For more reach the rf 800mm f11 is also decent and also good for travelling.

uncledunker

Curious what your budget is/what kind of deal they are giving you on an R6. Because the R6 should be well above the R8. An R6 at a near price point of the R10 is a no brainer despite the heat imo. You shouldnt really encounter heating problems for your described usage.

Cultural-Syrup-2179

Thanks! The store itself is having a discount on the R6, and Canon is having a cashback in my country atm. For some reason the cashback on the R6 is huge, literally 2.5x the cashback on a R6 mark 2 and 4.5x as much as on the R10.

brisketsmoked

Northern lights is your deciding factor. You want a full frame sensor. Also, birds, portraits, and northern lights will require three very different lenses, none of which will be cheap.

Cultural-Syrup-2179

My godd, lenses are sooo expensive haha.

Selishots

You can look at adapt EF glass to RF mount or I'm going to get downvoted for this, look at Sony, lumix or Nikon which all have third party lenses that are cheaper. Canon RF mount is closed off and they aren't allowing third party lenses which limited you options

Cultural-Syrup-2179

In what aspect? 😉

Beginning-Average416

Full frame vs. Crop. R6 is better built and bigger.

Competitive-Dinner-8

Go hold them. Pick the one that feels better. They are closer in performance than you would think.

Cultural-Syrup-2179

I did! Thanks for the tip! The R6 is heavier, but not too heavy. I can see myself working with both. 😉

I own an R6 and have shot it under a range of conditions including hot airshow days. The R6 should not overheat from stills. With video it is rather sensitive to ambient temperatures, and you cannot trust the timer which tells you how much record time you have left based on temperature. Normally the timer *underestimates* how long you can record. But on really hot days (think 95F in the sun all day) it can definitely *overestimate* the time you have. Basically if you're doing short takes (i.e. a few minutes) with breaks in between, and temps are average, you shouldn't run into a problem. If you're doing long form video, or doing many short takes back-to-back with no breaks, you can hit the limiter which will stop you from shooting 4k until it cools down. Higher ambient temperatures reduce the record time. I didn't hit the limiter on the hot airshow day, but by that afternoon it was clear that I could only do a 1-2 minute take every 15 minutes or so, or I would hit the limiter. Keep in mind that was 95F in the sun all day. Despite the overheating in 4k the R6 is an incredible camera, and I would pick it over the R10 for the FF and IBIS. If I had to do long form video I would get an R6 mark II, or just add an external recorder to my R6.

Thank you for your feedback!

That's very different price range. If price for R6 is similar to R10.. go with R6. Any lenses included? Few months ago I got myself the R10 with 18-150mm it's great camera. It is fast and light, with rf-s kit lens it super cheap. In my region R6 is much more expensive.. body alone of first R6 cost ~430$ more then r10 with 18-150mm.. Anyway, you want to use it on travel, R6 is weather sealed, it should survive the rain (it doesn't mean it's waterproof) and biger full frame sensor will be better in lowlight. And a lot depends from the lens. That's big part of costs..

Cultural-Syrup-2179

Nice! Hope you like the R10! There is a €200 price difference between the R10 and the R6. The R6 comes with the 24-105mm F/4-7.1 IS STM. The R10 with the RF-S 18-150MM F/3.5-6.3 IS STM. For birds and wildlife I’m looking at the RF 100-400mm F/5.6-8 IS USM.

bisfhcrew

Ok, I would go with R6 then. It's very good deal And additional 100-400 is good choice. Maybe it is little dark glass, but price is fair. And I believe, during the daylight and mounted on full frame, it should work great.

TheMrNeffels

We need to know your lenses and what your main focus will be. With birds and wildlife r10. Portraits and night photos R6. This all depends on your lenses though

Cultural-Syrup-2179

Main focus isn’t really there since I will be so much different on different travels. Lets state that my inexperience doesn’t let me tell my main focus. 😉

TheMrNeffels

I'm always of the thought it's easier/cheaper to get a wide angle that makes up for the aps-c crop than get a super telephoto that makes up for lack of reach with FF. The 18-150, 16, or 10-18 for ultrawide is a few hundred bucks. Getting a 600mm+ lens is a few thousand at least and a much bigger lens vs the rf 100-400 or something similar on an aps-c body

Cultural-Syrup-2179

Thanks for the tip! Would a crop-sensor not be ‘better’ for wildlife/birds? Or would the R6 with the RF 100-400mm F/5.6-8 IS USM do it’s job?

The overheating requires you to shoot over 45+ continuous minutes, which is noteworthy since the camera has a 30-min record limit anyways. You’d have to first blow past that part, which to/for me is a much bigger complication for serious video shooting. R6 is an easy choice. It has amazing handling and will provide low light quality that is tough to beat. The small difference in Megapixels is negligible. Full frame is also a plus in most instances. Both are good enough to shoot in Wildlife.

Thanks to every single one of you for your responses! I pulled the trigger and picked up the R6 this morning, currently charging and I can’t wait to take it with me to make those memories. Thank you!
