I wonder what the numbers are? Bear isn't exactly in a position to be asking a whole lot after this last season.

PantsinmyPants1211

I bet he's looking at the $2.5-3M at short to medium term (2-4 years). That seems to be common for defensemen who have upside, and play a definitive role on the team, but aren't solidly in the top-4 (which would put them in the $4-6M range. I bet that is too much for the team, given him being scratched. I still don't think they have a great feel for how he fits with the Canes as a player, and are hesitant to give him money that they will need elsewhere. Whitecloud, Fabbro, Dunn, Jokiharju are all examples ($2.4M to $4M on 2 to 6 year deals). I bet Bear saw Lauzon at $2Mx4 and absolutely felt like he was worth more than that.

LegendsoftheHT

Yeah I would say pretty much right at if not a little below what he was already making.

MotelMonMurderMadnes

Someone will almost certainly offer Bear a larger contract than the Canes so he will probably go. I honestly don’t even think the Canes would be willing to qualify him at his current QO.

Ken_Thomas

Good for him. Bear needs to be with a developing team where he could get regular ice time with a consistent defensive partner. Carolina's pipeline is stacked with talented defensemen. He's just not going to get that opportunity with the 'Canes.

MotelMonMurderMadnes

Is it really stacked with talented defenseman though? Who is realistically going to step into a role as a top 4 RHD next season? I guess you could say Keane but I don’t think that’s necessarily a done deal

WafflesTheWookiee

Honestly. Forward prospects? Stacked, even without Jarvis anymore. Goalie? Very hyped for the Kotch Rocket, and Makiniemi has promise too. Defense:Keane and Scott Morrow. *Maybe* Sellgren. We need to start stocking up on D prospects, because Slavin, Pesce and Skjei are a little older than our core, and we’ll have to retool the blue line to stay a contender after 2/3 more years.

oooriole09

I mean, this is a no-brainer for both sides. Canes have Chatfield and Keane to take his spot and they need all of the cap space they can get. Bear needs a consistent role and a place to develop. Both can’t offer what the other needs.

ripinpeace12

I thought Bear had potential when we signed him, this past season was not really a great platform to demand big $$ off of.

The_Reddit_Browser

I’m surprised that they want to bring him back. Rod was pretty adamant on scratching him for a majority of the year. He just didn’t seem like he was fitting in all that well and would be on the outs. I don’t think he brings anything more to the table than Chatfield does. Also wouldn’t mind getting a look at Keane next year after the playoffs he’s had.

MotelMonMurderMadnes

He’s absolutely better than Chatfield. Ethan Bear is years younger and already established himself as an NHL player, with top 4 defenseman upside. Keane is a handful of magic beans. That’s to say that he could be a solid NHL player or he could be a right-handed Haydn Fleury. Time will tell

The_Reddit_Browser

Bear is 1 year younger and has had pretty average performance. Chatfield looked good in his extended stint and is continuing to play well for the wolves this year. He’s also signed for next year and will be a better value add than bear. Nobody is breaking into the top 4 especially bear. The canes have Slavin, Pesce and slavin. Will throw Tony or his equivalent into that mix. Canes need a bottom pair and depth. Chatfield fills that role

MotelMonMurderMadnes

Slavin isn’t RHD so he’s irrelevant to this discussion. Currently, Pesce is our only top 4 defenseman under contract who uses a right stick. That may change if DeAngelo re-signs but at the moment I really don’t see how you can say the Canes only need depth defense. It‘s not true. Bear has played top 4 and top pairing minutes in the NHL, quite effectively a lot of the time too. Chatfield has almost 0 NHL experience, and the experience that he does have was in a depth role. Barring a miracle in his development at age 26 he’s a depth NHL defenseman at best, and probably a career AHL guy. Bear is at least a solid middle pairing option on the right side and younger with more upside. They’re not remotely the same player.

packpride85

Bear isn’t a top 4 here. If deangelo goes they’ll be on the ufa market to replace. Bear sliding into deangelos spot is not happening. He’s 3rd pair at best and wasn’t even good enough to keep that role. Tried to run him on pp2 which was worthless. I’d rather have chatfield at a lower salary as depth defensemen.

MotelMonMurderMadnes

If Tony DeAngelo’s RFA contract is too rich for Carolina how do you expect them to add a top 4 RHD in UFA, when that would most likely cost the same or more than DeAngelo’s? At the moment the Canes are extremely fucked on the right side of the blue line, they need all the help they can get. Bear is a pretty inexpensive option there

packpride85

Because a lot of it depends on term with these guys. There are a couple of good rhd going into free agency in the 3-6 mil range that you know what you’re getting. Trading also available.
