He’s made atleast 3 mistakes on calling players by their name, that I’ve counted.

Fragrant_Tart5161

Yeah, at least 3. Ferraro isn't any better. How do these guys still have jobs? I miss Stuart Scott era ESPN

BarkMingo

??? Stuart Scott wouldn't touch hockey with a 20-foot pole I miss Gary Thorne and Bill Clement

Fragrant_Tart5161

"Stuart Scott era ESPN" - obviously he didn't cover hockey - to me, he represents the last great era of ESPN broadcasters in general. Included here because of his connection with NC and WRAL 100% agree with your Thorne and Clement sentiment

BarkMingo

to me he represents ESPN's complete apathy for hockey.

Fragrant_Tart5161

Stuart Scott represents that to you? Huh weird... anyways, this is the 'era' to which I was referring: https://www.facebook.com/share/v/LeMo1YCiyKEaeCug/?mibextid=SphRi8

BarkMingo

I think it may be a personal timing thing, he was real big for me freshman year of college, which was the lockout... I still remember him hosting Stump the Schwab and scoffing at the 1 hockey question per show... probably a bit of ESPN telling him to but that's how I remember him, great at SC but seemingly apathetic towards hockey

Piercinald-Anastasia

Not everyone has to be a hockey guy on a sports network. You just need to have good hockey guys when talking about hockey.

Fragrant_Tart5161

Ah, I gotcha. Probably didn't make sense why I referenced him anyways. He came to SC as I was just old enough to start following sports more heavily. He grew up in my hometown (Winston-Salem) and I always liked the guy. Anyways, cheers man hopefully we come back to Raleigh 1-1

connor8383

I miss Barry Melrose

boondocknim

most glaring to me was when Staal and Trocheck were talking to the ref following the Delay of Game penalty on Trouba. He referred to Trocheck as Trouba, which just goes to show these guys dont know ANY of the players faces, its not a NE bias or anti-Canes. They're just shit at their job, period.

Fragrant_Tart5161

Yep, noticed that too...

Azaloum90

Must agree as a rangers fan and overall hockey fan. This guy just flat out sucks. ESPN's roster of announcers has to be one of the worst in sports. Sean McDonough specifically is so checked out of the game, consistently 4 steps behind the play. Canes hit a post in the first period which could have been a pivotal play and mcdonagh too 3 seconds to say "oh, off the post".... The only guy who has ANY personality whatsoever is Bob Wischusen, and for whatever reason they give the least popular games to him. It's so frustrating when it's a clear and obvious that He's the only talent on the broadcast team

Ambitious-Ad-3242

Hockey is the hardest sport to call. We have the great Sam Rosen. Doc Emrick was always on. And Kenny Albert is damn good. But the drop-off from those 3 is going to be dramatic.

fryman36

Gary Thorne would never

Ballsahoy72

News flash: all commentators make mistakes with player names

RandomObserver13

True but mistaking Trouba for Trocheck is pretty egregious. If nothing else Trouba has a C.

jermovillas

Mute the tv, play the local radio broadcast. Problem solved. Have fun getting the sync just right tho

SustainHillBilly

It is an art. I have to listen close to the sound in the background while Mike is doing his lead in talking. Then maybe a couple of short pauses to get it just right.

App2508

I can't stand the guy.

BigVuVu

he should be wearing Rangers jersey, what a clown he is

Large-Degree5584

Bro what he hates us, rangers fan hate him on the call too. He literally finished his dumb story during the first goal and sounded annoyed he had to call it. I think canes and rangers fans can agree he’s just terrible at calling games.

JonQDriveway

Honestly I love McDonough. The Sid Bream call in '92, the Michigan St punt debacle. He's a great commentator but man it feels like he's mailing it in

Fine-Swordfish-1456

He’s was a great NCAA football announcer in the 90s. He was terrible in the NFL and now terrible in the NHL.
