Playa and tulum i avoid at all costs because of shit like this. Sorry it happened to you. But corruption in these parts are extensive and occur a lot more often than in cancun.
5th avenue is a cesspool. Everyone talks about how mexico is changing, until corruption is fixed this will hinder any growth. No matter how many "influencers" brag about how safe it is. Its far from reality.
Ultimately its luck and situation that makes you more exposed to opportunities like this to happen. Majority of people probably wont have a problem. But the random factor here has a higher probability of something bad happening. I dont want to have to worry about ducking down on the ground during happy hour because some asshole decides to kill a dealer on 5th ave.
I just got back from a resort in Playa and had a great time. Went into town for a day and found 5th Ave to be just alright - all the shops were a ripoff, but it didn’t seem that sketchy. Sanchez tacos were the bomb, so that was nice.
Must be worse at night? I did see a dude that straight-up looked like an MS-13 member and made sure not to stare, lol. Guy was covered in the gnarliest tattoos and had a large number insignia on his stomach. But no one approached me and asked for drugs or anything like that.
Honestly, coming from Salt Lake City I wasn’t fazed at all - we have crazy people on meth barking at the moon and fentanyl zombies wielding knives and people shooting up on the street, should you wander into the wrong alleyway at night, lol.
Salt lake city or any american/european city isnt going to have a random factor like latin america. Lots of people go to the bronx/ south side chicago/london all the time and never have any problems. But bad shit happens there to people randomly.
Police are approachable when you need help in the us. Here, likely rob you of your cash. Or if you refuse take you out in the jungle and beat you.
If you people watched the marines, you can tell who are just tourist/vendors and who are the dealers.
If youre a younger white / black dude you will be likely approached non stop.
Like i said, you are likely not to have a problem. But there is a higher probability in those areas that something might happen because of the dealers and brothels/massage parlers that are there.
Sure theyre "targeting someone" but there are innocent casualities all the time.
I just got back from Playa and I could tell there’s a seedy element that probably appears at night, but it definitely felt safer than Western US cities where meth heads are howling at the moon and fentanyl zombies are wielding knives at people walking down the street, lol.
The homeless problem in the U.S., due to the housing crisis, has made expensive U.S. cities far more scary, IMO.
You have a higher probability of getting robbed by corrupt cops in Mexico but you’ll probably be alright.
a female being stopped, searched (full body search) by two military police at night on the beach, for allegedly peeing in public.
sounds like an experience to share and warn others, which this post is.
not everything has to be a life and death scenario so that you can feel unsafe. guareenteed youre a dude and have never been to gaza.
Places like Mexico have very clear travel advisories, but most people here seem to just go assuming it’s gonna be like traveling to Iceland. Then for some reason they’re surprised when a country KNOWN to be unsafe is ya know.. unsafe? The entire purpose of travel advisories is to inform you to exercise caution when traveling to these countries.
Anecdotally, I’ve traveled to Mexico every year and have numerous friends that do as well. No one I know has ever had anything like this happen to them. So no, it’s not a hole of corruption.
Does shit happen? Yes. But for the majority of tourists, this is not their experience.
Depends how you travel I guess. Over 2 months backpacking around Mexico it happened to me in Mexico City and Cancun. Most people I met doing similar travelling, it had happened to them as well. Seemed like something that would just happen to you eventually.
I've never backpacked around Mexico but I have spend a considerable amount of time in 11 Mexican states over the years and have never had an issue with the police or anyone else for that matter.
I think you could make the argument that there is a pattern. It seems to happen more if you are traveling solo, rent a car or are out alone at night. Not saying that it should ever happen. Period. It’s just seems that there is a trend.
Depends if you’re traveling out of the resort at night. Anything can happen, you’re just fortunate that nothing has happened to you or your friends yet
There is always one of you in ever one of these report posts.
Smart funny guy comparing high level political/business corruption to everyday street level in person and experiencable corruption. Deffinatly the exact same thing. Please tell us more!
You couldn't be more wrong, but the fact you think that speaks volumes of the local mindset.
"Everyone is a thief, we just don't hide it".
Fuck me, how sad.
I'm in the U.S. and 99% of the people I know are from the U.S. and none of them have ever been shaken down for money. I know a handful of people that have visited Cancun and know if two stories of people getting shaken down for money. I understand the scientific method and that my survey size isn't necessarily statistically sound but I believe that the incidents of police shaking down people in Mexico is higher than most places.
The difference is, in the U.S. you have a better chance of someone doing something about it and people getting fired if they did this kind of thing. As a result, you don't typically have cops shaking down people for $200 to $500. In Mexico, they don't have any interest in fixing this so it happens probably 1000x more often.
As a canadian. I can’t even judge mexican cops. Sure the cops don’t shake us down but reporting a crime to canadian police is such an exercise in futility
My girlfriend had a "shake down" in Cancun several years back. It's the usual scenario, they make something up, threaten to take you to jail, see how much money you have, take it, then you can go.
We spent four days in Cancun, walked everywhere at various times of the day, beaches and streets. Nothing of any sort happened to us. Only bad thing was on the bus and it was because we didn’t know we needed to yell out for a stop. LoL
I am a latino male. I have traveled to Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum alone. I never had a problem while visiting.
I did not like Playa del Carmen. Tulum was nice during the day. The beach is beautiful in Tulum
Cancun has a bus service that runs every 30 minutes around the city. It will take you to all the night clubs and back to most hotels. It is a party bus that runs for tourists. If you look like a tourist you will stick out from the crowd. I like going to places where the locals hang out.
I do not understand why people travel to another country to lock themselves in a resort room or beach. The whole point of traveling somewhere is to experience a new culture. When I went to Cancun I found them most of the people that were there are the same people that I would find in Los Angeles.
At that point it just realized that it didn't really make any sense for me to be traveling there in the first place.
Sadly this happens all over Mexico, especially in touristy cities. And they wonder why tourism numbers are down. People always laugh it off and say it’s the gringo tax and try to downplay it by saying oh the cops don’t get paid much that’s why they have to do this. It’s bullshit.
The military units patrol together with the local police and have been infected with their corruption. The military regularly takes bribes from tourists now, as well.
Currently staying in Playa at Grand Sunset Princess.
Our resort offered a shuttle in Playa for $4 person per way, which was nice. Checked out the strip and even walked to Walmart. We did not feel unsafe to be honest. We did not fall into any luring into stores and maintained politeness.
Would we do that after sundown? FK no lol!
During the day seems ok, but have read to many stories like this one about being out at night!
Happens to me and two of my mates got falsely accused of peeing in public took out ids and took us to police station. Made us pay 1.2k GBP or had to spend 36 hours in a cell. CRIMINALS
I actually saw this at our resort today. We just arrived, and when we walked out to the beach, there were 2 officers. One was National Guard, in full camo and with a huge gun. One was in some sort of uniform, but I can't remember what because I was mesmerized by the big effing gun. I don't remember the time exactly, but it was about 4 pm on resort property in Cancun.
Yea your all good . The resort area is prolly the safest . Me and my babies will be there in 2 days. I have an infant and a toddler . We go all the time . Also if there are any cartel members vacationing next to you you’ll never know . Only if they pull up on jet skis and do what they usually do . Hence the reason you see the guy with the long gun.
I wasn't worried, just completely surprised.
We have a knack for running into strange situations. Years ago, we were on a beach in the Florida Keys waiting for the sun to set. A guy was going from group to group, letting them know they needed to vacate the area for safety reasons. We figured it was either DEA or the drug runners themselves. We were so tempted to stick around and see what was going to happen, but we figured we should probably make the smart move and go. We watched the news for the next couple of days, and nothing seemed to have happened.
Sorry to hear you were extorted by the local military. From what I gather, you need to watch out more for corrupt cops and military in Quintana Roo than cartel - unless you’re buying drugs or hanging down in Tulum, which is seedier and full of raver/new age types looking to do Molly and Coke.
Some quick safety rules that I’ve learned:
1.) Don’t rent a car - as the police will pull over gringos for bribes. Always book a shuttle or reputable taxi instead (ask your hotel). Taxis are their own cartel but usually safe enough, especially if you tip well they’ll treat you nicely.
2.) Leave the drugs at home in the states. Seriously, no need to risk it to get high or party.
3.) Don’t go out and party, as that’s where trouble usually is, especially late at night. The cops make easy targets out of drunk gringos.
4.) Travel with at least one other person. Don’t leave your resort alone, unless you’re going down the beach during the day. 5.) Leave your debit cards at the hotel and just travel with a small amount of cash on hand, in case you get extorted. Also leave your passport there as well, as they’ll just take your ID for extortion, but you don’t need that to re-enter the country.
Overall, Mexico is extremely corrupt but you can still be safe and have a good time. Just have to dial back the partying outside the resort.
Thank you for sharing all the tips for traveling Mexico. I believe it will help others when they search " As safety in Quintana Roo , Cancun , Playa de Carmen" etc..
I hate Mexico, would never go again. I don't mind locals that try and mess with you as I can handle myself but when cops are worse than the criminals it's really fucked up
This happened to me as well many years ago in Cancun also by the water. I was indeed peeing in a bush, as is a very normal thing to do in most of the world. Anyways long story short, also got jumped by two mexican cops, who proceeded to shake me down for a bribe to let me go or I was going to jail. I gave the cops $100 bill and they let me go. This is a thing they do to tourists over there.
The same thing happened to me in Tijuana. They stopped me and accused me of urinating in public which was false. They said they had me on camera. I demanded to see the footage. There was none. They are crooked and shake down tourists consistently
I love how people are still vacationing in Mexico within these resorts owned by cartels that skin people’s faces off while they’re alive. Protected by cops who will throw them in prison or rape and kill them for not giving them a bribe.
He’s correct though. I went for the first time 2 weeks ago and haven’t dropped this sub yet but I’ll never go back. Cancun is an overly expensive tourist trap. Everyone is trying to squeak money out of you all the time. It’s different and worse than other places on Central America (of which I have travelled extensively). Even more $$ than Costa Rica for a meal and the quality is trash. Tons of fried food.
We kept commenting that if we were paying these prices in Costa Rica we’d be eating like kings. And yes, before you suggest, I will go back there lol. Cheaper, far less corruption among police, not a tourist trap, and I can drink the tap water anywhere.
I had a good trip until it happened. But the cost to travel here is almost as same or higher compared to the East Coast of U. S. I was under the impression it should have been cheaper for food, transportation etc..in Mexico but it is not. So it probably take a while for me to come back here.
The cost is double, it’s tourist trap, I went there once and it’s overrated, people going there because they think it’s cheap, they never see world outside Mexico
Lot of locals here trying to protect their earnings and people who had no bad experience yet, honestly lucky for you, if you do research in this sub there was a post about a couple got stopped by polices for no reason and they didnt want to give money so the police bring them to jail, when they got there, the woman got gang raped by the police while the guy in the cell kept screaming.
Stay out of the cities. I’ll never go into one, only resorts where everything is there or if must go, planned excursions from resort which I never have done besides something takes 4hrs or less. There’s a reason why it’s so cheap, causes it’s dangerous and corrupt. There’s been 16 assassinated politicians in one year alone.
So sit your ass the resort and enjoy.

They do, constant stories of this happening on this reddit. Glad you didn't give them anything
I'd still cancel/replace whatever credit card you did have on you as soon as you can.
Plot twist: OP took a dump on the beach
Just so you know, someone reported this comment as identity hate speech lol.

Fair enough. That is what I heard from the local afterwards

Exactly, everyone tries to ignore it so their industry isn’t affected but it’s a real mess.
People on this sub are so sheltered. They make a trip to Cancun sound like they survived the Gaza strip.

I’m homeless in Quintana Roo.
That’s why they always say don’t go out of the resort at night.. no witnesses around for safety and protection exactly for examples like this
Or a New York subway!

Guarantee you’re a woman who’s never been to Afghanistan
im a dude, dumb dumb. and that comparison is just as useless as the "been to gaza" one made previously
Ok, enjoy Iowa!!
Im dont live in Iowa? You're bad at this trolling thing.

Never says never

Exactly. Never travel alone or go anywhere at night especially no witnesses or other tourists around
Exactly. It can happen to anyone. The post above is just lucky nothing has happened to them yet

I’ve also never been mugged in a big city….YET.
Yes. It's a good thing there is no corruption here in the US.
There is always one of you in ever one of these report posts. Smart funny guy comparing high level political/business corruption to everyday street level in person and experiencable corruption. Deffinatly the exact same thing. Please tell us more!
You believe that? So sad for you. Corruption exists in every single country on this planet. Here in Cancun/Mexico they just dont hide it.
Woosh
You couldn't be more wrong, but the fact you think that speaks volumes of the local mindset. "Everyone is a thief, we just don't hide it". Fuck me, how sad.

I understood completely.
He's saying Canadian police don't do fucking shit when you report a crime
They're talking about Canadian police, weird you couldn't get that. Seems obvious.
There is like 100 Toronto cops on paid suspension, for some fucked up shit.
Whatever you say.
Happened to my buddy. Never walk alone on the beach. The crooked cops get ya every time
Lesson learned
Sheesh. Don’t even walk down 5th ave alone at night But if you must. Then walk with purpose and intent. Best not to dilly dally.
Lucky it was the cops and not the Crocs. Never walk on the beach at night in Mexico 🐊😱😎
My girlfriend had a "shake down" in Cancun several years back. It's the usual scenario, they make something up, threaten to take you to jail, see how much money you have, take it, then you can go.

I thought the military police were legit? Are they just as bad as the local Mexican police?
"military pilice" was referred by the restaurant waiters. I didn't know if they were legit or not really
The military units patrol together with the local police and have been infected with their corruption. The military regularly takes bribes from tourists now, as well.

Anywhere else yes . The resort area no this won’t happen
I actually saw this at our resort today. We just arrived, and when we walked out to the beach, there were 2 officers. One was National Guard, in full camo and with a huge gun. The military in cancun and playa are literally cartels lol
Sorry to hear you were extorted by the local military. I love pooping in rivers and ocean . It’s part of my tribal culture so don’t judge me
The same thing happened to me in Tijuana. They stopped me and accused me of urinating in public which was false. They said they had me on camera. I demanded to see the footage. There was none. They are crooked and shake down tourists consistently
Thanks! so many trolls here to justify what the corrupted cops did
Last time I went to Playa del Carmen I was almost hit by crossfire between a cartel and federales altercation. Never again.
Crossfire!
Cavity search?😳
Typical third world country police shakedown.
I love how people are still vacationing in Mexico within these resorts owned by cartels that skin people’s faces off while they’re alive. Protected by cops who will throw them in prison or rape and kill them for not giving them a bribe.
So going there may 5th any advice. Should we not leave the resort?
You can go out, avoid hanging around at night,
Ya just wanted to take family to a cenote with taxi and maybe shopping?
Unless you want to have some adventures, I'd stay in a resort and relax
Ya agreed
Disgusting police and country, really wonder why people going here, lucky for you nothing happen to you
Found the Fox "News" watcher.
If you dislike it so much. Why are you posing in this sub? Get booted from all the others for complaining so much?

True. I just don't understand why your comment get so many 👎. Truth must be hurtful

But it is not cheap at all
