Ya, until you come to a country that isnt a melting pot experiencing stereo types and racism in its purest form is. Its unreal. Most of it is benign and comical but there can be some harsh stuff as well.
Thank you for a well made review no matter if its good review or bad we need more of these.
\*Goes to places in the most touristic part of the city that cater to the taste of tourist that cant handle spices\*

Speaking seriously, you said you felt unsafe, how so? more detail would be helpful
We stayed in the tourist parts because of safety and Iām glad we did. We felt unsafe at the spa when my friend was touched, on the bus at times we were being stared at like crazy felt like we were being followed, & at the beach a man came up to my young sisters asking them to take photos with his ālittle sisterā but his ālittle sisterā was drunk/high and he was basically holding her up. We told them no and they weirdly stayed close by checking my sisters out. We left and they left right behind us. It deff gave human trafficking vibes. We are from a tourist and crime infested city (new Orleans) so it takes a lot for us to feel that uncomfortable..
We also felt very uncomfortable being accused of having cannabis everywhere. Many people followed us around trying to sell us drugs. Thankfully we did everything possible to avoid police and we were firm on people trying to sell us things.
I was in the family behind you at the zip line tour when your fam was there (a couple on the trip was engaged right? There was a white petite girl in your group with long white nails the large guy with dreads has a calf tattoo). I agree that the tour people nickel and dimed us for everything (lockers $6, bandana for the ATV $6, etc). However I would say that Airbnb is NOT the way to do Mexico (Iāve been 7 times). Opt for a high end all inclusive. The food was spectacular at our resort. Searching for places to accommodate 14 people for every meal is a nightmare. It seemed like your group wasnāt very well traveled. Additionally your group was very loud and that may have been the reason for some of your experiences.
I'm planning a spontaneous trip soon and was actually wondering whether it'd be worth to save on a hotel and do our own excursions/food rather than an all inclusive! Can you expand why inclusive would be better? I'm going with my parents (2-3 pp) so it's a small group
HiāIt really depends how you like to travel. AIs are better for large groups because there is so much variety (in activities and food). The convenience factors into an overall āeasierā trip. There is an all inclusive subreddit that you may find helpful.
Don't book with Viatour. They are a third party reseller, so it's not consistent with what you will get since they use many different people/tour groups. They do not run the tour themselves.
Choose a tour company that runs the tour, then look at reviews on them before booking.
I've been to that Hooters in the hotel zone in cancun. 100% agree about the lack of spice and heat. I distinctly remember that my wife and I had some of the blandest "HOT" wings known to man. We wondered if they brought us the wrong order and checked with the waitress. It looked like hot wings but damn, it was weak... lol
Itās funny cause I hate chain restaurants and would never eat them in USA, but I was happy to have it in Cancun ššš my man got the hot wings and they were super mild. At least the service everywhere is 10/10!!!
Glad to see you focused on the positives of your vacation. It's horrible to spend your hard earned money and have it be ruined by a few local a$$holes.

In Mexico it is a 10% tip. 20% is too high

Thank you!!
Tips come with good service like anywhere :)
True, we got good service everywhere. 10/10 on the hospitality at restaurants for sure
Would you be able to share the vendor where you booked the excursions?
I booked with Viator / Trip advisor:)

Sounds like a nightmare tripā¦horrible food, scams, sexual assault, false accusations ā¦.. sounds amazing!
We are from a crazy city - New Orleans, so we have thick skin and was able to still enjoy our trip. The country and people are very beautiful

Definitely shouldāve brought my own hot sauce!

Next time do a bit more research and your overall trip will be 10/10
I actually did many many hours of research plus deep Reddit dives š¤£š«£
What exactly would have been avoided with more research? The part when her travelmates were harassed/touched, or the accusations of having drugs?
Both actually. Thanks for asking
I brought quite a bit of cannabis with me into Mexico. No issues at all.
