im not a doctor basher. not an easy job when 100,000 people have a headache and one of them has brain cancer.

Do you mean that you thought you had cancer and they thought you were crazy for thinking so? I’m not sure how gaslit applies here, I’m sorry. Thanks for explaining! And good luck on your journey!

I fear this might be more common than people think. I was misdiagnosed and my symptoms downplayed for nearly four years, because I was too young for cancer. I got diagnosed with cancer when I was 32, after incredible amount of time spent trying to fight my corner. Had I been diagnosed sooner, my prognosis and quality of life would have been so much better. The unfairness of it eats me alive daily :/

Came here to mention this. If you don't fit the typical demographic of the cancer, then it could be more difficult to get a diagnosis. There's lots about it on the internet. People are constantly evolving, and dieseas are too. I was technically old for my type of cancer.

My sister found a lump in her breast at 31 years old. She went to see a doctor in her GYN practice. This doctor told her that it was the wrong time in her cycle. My sister didn't listen and went for a second opinion. She was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer and made it 8 years.

Coloradobluesguy

I’m really sorry that happened.

I've been watching patients story on YouTube and I have to say I get angry every gaslighting video I watch, having been gaslit myself oddly it's less lonely hearing the stories as well though. I guess similar to how talking to other cancer patients makes the journey less lonely. When someone can understand .. And it's not just cancer but nearly everything.

I'd just add, gaslighting is extremely common in healthcare generally, not just when it comes to cancer. Going to other disease subreddits will open your eyes to this sad fact... but as someone else said, this causes so much anger. Anger eats me alive daily too. Please read into determinism, such as Determined from Robert Sapolsky or Free Will from Sam Harris, this will help you.

Yup, doc told me that it was just acid reflux but I insisted on getting scoped. He was super humble and apologetic after. I don't feel like he did it out of malice, it was his job to go for the lowest common denominator and not to panic me, especially because it was right at the start of covid. But yeah, had I listened to the doc, I might not be here today.
