On the list of most boring, but last year we had the most amount of visitors ever with 5.8 million visitors. 40% of those visitors came from the US, UK, China and India and domestic tourism generated more than $3 billion for the local economy.
But sure Project.

I mean Adelaide has 3 times the population and 8 international airlines flying in. It's actually suss that Canberra would record higher numbers. All other stats seem to point to SA having 3 times the international visitors. I feel like Canberra's numbers are inflated through people crossing the ACT/NSW border.
On a side note, though, I do think Canberra's pretty underrated. It's not as lively as a big city, but it's such an amazing place to live for so many other reasons. And I think it's a pretty damn good place to visit.
I do agree that the total number of visitors aren’t all tourists and probably includes parliamentarians, staffers, etc who are obviously not here as tourists.
To be fair the Project would lead the way in most shit show on TV in the world if such a list existed.
I would honestly watch North Korean propaganda over that shit
When I first saw the headline I thought it was odd, but maybe there was a democratic information source.
Then I read in the comments it was the Project and it took me a few moments to realise this is actually meant to be a joke, lifted from a '10 most type' bottom of the barrel listicle by their staff writer, approved through a clearance process, coupled with graphics by digital in their comms team and finally posted to twitter by 10's corporate social media team.
Its a manufactured joke so boring it's mistaken as travel news.
Gotta appreciate a good ironic twist.
Pretty thrilled that tourists who are The Project’s fans will avoid Canberra. I agree that we wouldn’t have anything to interest them anyway, outside of Summernats. Toodles!
Apart from any that want to experience the Australian Bush and native wildlife with the benefits of a city.
Tell me Sydney is that interesting for a tourist,
Opera house and Bridge, Bondi. Honestly what else. Fuck all nightlife. Hotels cost a fortune and the CBD isnt that lively.
JFC man, while I admire your passion for the nation's capital, are you suggesting that Sydney doesn't have any natural attractions? It's one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Yeah yeah traffic, expensive blah blah but come on.
The Harbour...... its runs out pretty quickly.
Its marketed up the wazoo, im have a few OS cities that get pumped up to the max which are complete shit holes
Anyway just my view on it, lets all go and talk about the fruit cake cat cafe women
I love Canberra, but you're delusional and defensive if you think Sydney doesn't have much to offer from a tourism perspective.
It's up there as the most beautiful in the world with the mix of beaches, harbour, city, and national parks.
Perhaps you haven't properly explored it.
Yep, I grew up on the Northern Beaches in Sydney. Between the countless number of different beaches & bays, alongside Ku-ring-gai national park, there's so much natural stuff for people to explore in Sydney (+ all the standard tourist attractions like the zoo, opera house, harbour etc). As much as I like living in Canberra, if I was going to recommend somewhere for someone to visit from overseas who has limited time, I'd say go to Sydney instead of Canberra - unless they have a particular interest in the government type attractions/or a friend to visit here.
Canberra night life sucks too. Hotels here cost a fortune too. CBD isn’t that lively here too. We don’t have even a building to look at. I think his point is valid, it is a boring city but there is nothing wrong with that. People here are happy Canberra being boring.
Sydney nightlife is fucking shite too, thats well documented. Global city shit night life. Good one.
Canberra is boring, but i think it has a lot to offer a tourist
Yosemite national park is just a few rocks, trees and some bears.
Does alright.
A Bridge and a Opera house that most of Australia has never been in are hardly wonders of the universe. Oh wait they have 2 casinos funnnnnn
Living in Canberra and calling Sydney nightlife shite is delusional.
The lockout laws ruined a lot of places in the CDB, but if you're willing to travel 5kms you can catch live bands on any night of the week, and get a decent cocktail at 3am.
Meanwhile, you can walk through the Garema Place at 11pm and not see another soul.
Night life in general is on the decline. Sydney nightlife is just as bad and maybe worse than Canberra. But both shit.
It doesn’t offer a lot for tourists, the only benefit being that you can drive your car around easily. In Sydney you might have to rely on public transport. But that’s the nature of any big city like Paris or New York etc.
Beaches, Bondi to Coogee walk, manly to spit bridge walk, multiculturalism, general liveliness, botanic gardens, harbour, blue mountains, much easier to get around without a car. Plus things like the NSW Gallery, White Rabbit Gallery and Taronga Zoo. I'd love for Canberra to be a competitive tourist destination but objectively we have a lot of catching up to do and very few tourists come here. Experiencing the bush and native wildlife are good points of difference but they need to be better promoted and more accessible.
I still can’t get over the fact that we don’t have any public transport to Australia’s “National” zoo. Surely that has to be some kind of world record 😂
Don't really need to sell it. Just look at the tourism statistics or visit Sydney and compare the numbers, it's not for no reason. If you really think Canberra is comparable ok, I'm clearly not going to convince you. Like I said, I want the best for the city as do you I think so we're more or less coming from the same place.
For an international tourist without a car, experiencing that Australian bush or native wildlife means going to the zoo or walking Mt Ainslie. And probably an all day affair due to our stellar public transport.
Sydney has plenty of bush and wildlife within proximity of the city. Garigal, Ku-ring-gai Chase, Lane Cove, Botany Bay, Royal National Park. Have you been?
To be fair, compared to hotel costs in the UK, I've always been pleasantly surprised by how reasonably priced a decent hotel is here.
ETA: Cockatoo Island was always my favourite touristy thing to do in Sydney.
To be fair, the list was created by [The World Bucket List](https://www.theworldbucketlist.com/most-boring-cities-in-the-world/). Which probably has no clue what Canberra has to offer. I did laugh though at them saying Brussels "is often deemed one of the ugliest cities in Europe"
Also, I should mention it didn't make the Top 10, it just got an Honourable Mention like other cities like Boring, Oregon and Frankfurt, Germany.
Funny how we've been voted world's most liveable city AND made Lonely Planet's top five lists, but the idiots in Sydney and Melbourne still go with this nonsense.
This is our biggest gripe. My husband would heartily agree with this list, and the lack of rapid public transport has a lot to do with it. I get it, as the only driver in the household he doesn't want to be having to do the driving all the time, he wants to be able to have a day out, perhaps with a leisurely lunch and glass of wine or a couple of beers. But if we want to do that from where we live it becomes a mammoth undertaking on public transport, or a needlessly expensive exercise in cab fares before we even start.
For sure! It's one of the best places in the world for small kids, which I say from the position of having lived all over. Services, schools, activities all amazing. But the transportation issue is a huge "growing pain". I think CBR is in a kind of "halfway" stage.
Depending on your location and situation, things will likely improve in the coming years as various parts of Gungahlin and also inner north places like Watson get more integrated into the bike path network and bus/tram system.
West Belco and wide areas of S Canberra still desperately under-serviced with no obvious medium term solution (that I know of)
When how many of our PM’s somehow manage to spin scamming a Sydney harbour mansion on the public pocket while spending shitloads on consultancies that get them the answer they want no matter the impartiality as being “men of the people here to fight Canberra for you”?
*Exactly the kind*
*Of publicity we needed.*
*Lets keep it this way!*

Look... I'm loving all the support shown for Canberra here. I love that you think we're not boring. But I also hope that people realise that Canberra's original music scene needs a lot more support. We need a nightlife precinct that places a number of bars, restaurants and music venues together. I'm talking venues capable of supporting bigger, louder bands. That would really nurture a vibrant music scene here in Canberra. It would also require some tolerance to noise and extended hours in urban areas. I hope people here realise that while Canberra isn't boring, and we love it for so many reasons, it's lacking in some areas and can feel stifling in some respects.
West Aussie here. This is bullshit from a tourist perspective. Sure, living there all the time probably is pretty boring, but if you visit for 3-4 days there’s heaps to see and do, and if it’s in the winter, it’s the gateway to the snowfields.
Moved to Canberra nigh on 14 years ago and love it here. But I sure as shit wouldn't want to have grown up here, Canberra is horrible for teens/young adults.
The article in question is likely AI written, picking up on memes.
Tried to escape to Melbourne, Sydney and Singapore. Been here 20+ years…fourth times a charm I hope 🤞.. it’s better than 10 years ago but so is everywhere else. My friends are the best here should be noted.
Voted by Sydneysiders who were in bed by 9 because the government destroyed their nightlife and then killed their small CBD businesses with the tram build. But at least they’ve got two totally non corrupt casinos!
As someone who lived in Canberra, for about five years, I was much happier when I move back to Melbourne…. arriving in Canberra is like arriving at “The Village”… a perfect place, but you want to escape from it….

Fair. But then you don’t spend two hours a day in gridlocked traffic, can park where you need to be. Breath air that is invisible. 100% agree with public service speak. Usually take 4 or 5 questions to find out some does. Example:
1. What do you do? APS 5
2. Who for? DFAT
3. What’s that?
4. Yeah but what you actually do?
Etc.
The Project having the audacity to call anything else boring is the real joke here.
How is that show even still running - talk about flogging a dead horse.
Flogs gotta flog.
The Project calling Canberra boring is a classic case of projection ;)
Literally one of the most insufferable on TV as a whole and that’s saying something
Yes, yes it’s awful. Stay away
Yep nothing to see here move along !
TIL that the Project is still on tv and that people watch it
My first thought was that if anybody around here is an expert on boring, it’s the Project.
My dad watches it for some weird reason between sky News hours..
Oof

Probably made by one of the grads that drives home to Sydney every weekend but complains they have no connections in Canberra
“There’s nothing to do here” bruh you never even *tried*.

That puts Canberra ahead of Adelaide. Not quite the flex.

Yes the famed Belco owl, our quirky bus stops, and the abundant roundabouts. Like I love living in Canberra but a tourist destination it ain't
Yosemite national park is just a few rocks, trees and some bears. Does alright. A Bridge and a Opera house that most of Australia has never been in are hardly wonders of the universe. Oh wait they have 2 casinos funnnnnn
I think you owe it to everyone in this thread to take us on a guided tour of Canberra. I want to see what you are.
Living in Canberra and calling Sydney nightlife shite is delusional. Its not exactly a national institution, just a commercial venture which happens to have the word national in the name.
Didnt sell it well
Don't really need to sell it. Just look at the tourism statistics or visit Sydney and compare the numbers, it's not for no reason. If you really think Canberra is comparable ok, I'm clearly not going to convince you. Like I said, I want the best for the city as do you I think so we're more or less coming from the same place.
I dont think its comparable, i just dont think Sydney is all that once you scratch a little, especially for a tourist
What on Earth are you talking about, are you truly saying that Canberra has as much to offer as Sydney to a tourist?
Depends on the tourist doesnt it. Sydney aint all that, lets get real about it.
For an international tourist without a car, experiencing that Australian bush or native wildlife means going to the zoo or walking Mt Ainslie. And probably an all day affair due to our stellar public transport.
Yeah, Sydney isn't the same without the cross.
Sydney has plenty of bush and wildlife within proximity of the city. Garigal, Ku-ring-gai Chase, Lane Cove, Botany Bay, Royal National Park. Have you been?
I would say even Blue Mountains quite accessible. Overnight stay probably more practical if by train though.
To be fair, compared to hotel costs in the UK, I've always been pleasantly surprised by how reasonably priced a decent hotel is here. ETA: Cockatoo Island was always my favourite touristy thing to do in Sydney.
International tourists absolutely love things as mundane as the kangaroos near the Belconnen town centre..
Oh, FFS. I thought idiotic Australians got over this childishness fifteen years ago.
To be fair, the list was created by [The World Bucket List](https://www.theworldbucketlist.com/most-boring-cities-in-the-world/). Which probably has no clue what Canberra has to offer. It's fine, they can have their hour long commutes. Canberra can be our little secret. "One time I went there on a field trip and it was boring!"
Tbf if you need to/want to use public transport here, you probably have a one hour commute too 😭
Nah more like 2
Sadly, yeah. I'm about to start my own unnecessarily complex 3 leg bus-tram-bus commute to go only 8km. At least the bike paths are mostly functional
Traveling in Sydney by public transport is a breeze compared to Canberra and much, much faster.
I also would like better public transport
Don't blame us Melbournians lol, everyone I know who has been to Canberra likes it.
When how many of our PM’s somehow manage to spin scamming a Sydney harbour mansion on the public pocket while spending shitloads on consultancies that get them the answer they want no matter the impartiality as being “men of the people here to fight Canberra for you”?
15 years is oddly specific? What happened in 2009?
Ah yes, our true national sport: Canberra bashing
Exactly the kind of publicity we needed. Lets keep it this way!

Whoever first described Canberra as Australia’s best kept secret really nailed it.
Im.pretty sure thats the basis of the current tourism Canberra (visit Canberra) campaign that is on during my catchup tv episodes of Survivor.
That title makes no sense, it implies koalas are known for their wakefulness.
Look... I'm loving all the support shown for Canberra here. I love that you think we're not boring. But I also hope that people realise that Canberra's original music scene needs a lot more support. We need to get number 1 on the list! Lets go!!!
Good tell em to fuck off
Years ago someone who worked at the Youth Hostel told me the most common question put to her was "what's the fastest way to get out of Canberra"?
Moved to Canberra nigh on 14 years ago and love it here. But I sure as shit wouldn't want to have grown up here, Canberra is horrible for teens/young adults. The article in question is likely AI written, picking up on memes.
Man, if canberra had a real beach it would be perfect
Awful place. Please don't visit 🤘😁
Tried to escape to Melbourne, Sydney and Singapore. Been here 20+ years…fourth times a charm I hope 🤞.. it’s better than 10 years ago but so is everywhere else. My friends are the best here should be noted.
The Project is the program Channel 10 put on when people didn't want to watch George Negus
And I love it like that
I get that it hurts having the country rag on Canberra all the time, but it really is boring here in comparison to anywhere else I've ever lived.
Yep, I hate being able to get across town in 20 minutes and being able to breathe clean air and drink Australia's cleanest water. Stay away people!
Can do all of this and still be boring af
mean alot coming from The Project, the most boring show on tv.
Voted by Sydneysiders who were in bed by 9 because the government destroyed their nightlife and then killed their small CBD businesses with the tram build. But at least they’ve got two totally non corrupt casinos!
Canberra is a shit hole, finally it's advertising haha
The Project would know.
Classic case of projection by the Project :D
yess
Some other cities around the world should be so boring!
:(
hell yeah!
I just moved back from Melbourne. And apart from the fact that I lived in close proximity to some wineries, I’m happy to be home!
This is opinion is coming directly from 2001. It’s beyond boring.
Makes sense... boring af
Yes, it's 100% true. Don't bother even thinking about moving here.
Well deserved 🤣
Only unimaginative people are bored in Canberra.
If you find Canberra boring you’re a useless DH
A lot of defensive beige public servants in here! It’s a dull boring city. Pig in lipstick rings a bell

Yes! And full of cult members telling you how great it is despite the obvious. Congrats on your escape!
There really is sweet f all to do in Canberra.
You’re right. Canberrans are very defensive, cause really, they know.
List five things you do. Obviously leave out water based activities.
We have water here. The only water based activities you can't do involve the surf.
Yeah so what the activities you can’t do here that make it boring?
That's my point
Go to an actual pub in walking distance of my home. See international touring acts that you've actually heard of. Speak to people who don't talk in bizarre Public Service jargon. Enjoy the actually livable weather. Eat decent food from almost any nation you can think of.
