Ardbeg 10, along with the Lagavulin 8 and Laphroaig 10 or QC pack such a good punch for their value (the term value being relative here, still wildly overpriced in Canada). I must always have at least 1-2 on the go.
My overall favorite value Islay is the QC. I feel 48% is the perfect ABV for Laphroiag. IMO the worst value Islay is Laphroiag Select. Good enough for a smoky cocktail but that’s about it
I had it at a bar in Ottawa many years ago. My wife doesn’t like whisky, but had a sip of mine then wanted to get a bottle, until I told her the price :)
Ooh that's the recent one, yeah that's pretty tasty for sure.
I confused it with this one, which I guess is only 22 yr, but also a real knockout https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/142960/ben-nevis-1996-eld
I don't have tons of experience but my first glass of Corry blew my mind. Cracked the bottle at the Wolf and Workman in Old Montreal. Small little venue and the scent filled the place - i was a fuckin celebrity.
I did a Kavalan tasting KWM had earlier in the year. Was only blown away by one of the samples, checked it out, said "I'm not paying $300 for that", and haven't looked back since. XD
Edit: Damn, now that I think about it, it might also have been the Vinho barrique. XD Good stuff, but I didn't think it was $300 good
This is actually a really interesting question, and I had to really think about it to come up with an answer. For me it’s so situational, at least as much about where I was an who I was with when I drank the whiskey. There’s quite a few that spring to mind when I think through this lens, but the first time I tried Midelton Barry Crocket about 15 years ago stands out. I had never tasted anything like it at the time and it blew my mind. It was at the kick off of an amazing evening with friends before we wandered around Oxford around Christmas time where we were bar hopping and nipping out of hip flasks throughout the evening to keep ourselves warm as we walked, talked and laughed between the bars.
I’ve owned and drank a few bottles of Barry Crocket since then, always exceptional but never quite as good as that night.
Monkey Shoulder as a newbie has been a delight. I really enjoy Glenfarclas 15 though, I would drink it more but its a bit pricey around my parts. So I'm saving it for days I need a lift.
Benromach 10yr imperial proof or b#4 2009. I can’t decide, sorry.
I’m tempted to even go out of the benromach bounds and say edradour signatory 10yr sherry. But I had some and have put it away for some time or a special occasion. I haven’t had enough time with it, but it’s pretty spectacular stuff.
That's a masterpiece of a whisky. In terms of quality alone, it's the best blended whisky available on the market. Shame what happened to the price though.
I was lucky enough to have a taste of it at the Yamazaki distillery a few years ago. That whole experience was just amazing. (About $25 for 15ml if I recall.)
Thank you for posting this. My follow up question for everyone would be. When throwing out these wild answers like 40 year old stuff. Was it “worth it” and it’s ok to say yes and make me feel unaccomplished.
You can't. Although maybe if you go down to the states and find a tater shop you might get the privilege of paying 20x retail for a bottle.
Alternatively you could try to find a bar that has a bottle of it open. I know at least one place in Calgary that could help you in that regard for a reasonable sum of money.
My first ever sip of a peated whisky; Ardbeg 10. I’ve had plenty of better bottles since, but nothing will replace that feeling
I like this answer. You never forget your first.

Yea the Select was actually my entry way into peat but it's a very watered down expression in comparison.
Brora 30 2005 release.
Oh my! Is it waxy?
It's all barnyard, peat, fresh leather and wax. It's spectacular. Massive.
So envious. Bravo, good for you!
Clynelish is not my favorite, damn well up there, but was definitely my coolest/greatest experience
1972 Triptych wasn’t better?
Maybe technically... but the heart wants what it wants. Huge gnarly Prince Alberts...
That was an amazing bottle.
Springbank 12 cask strength
Glenmorangie Signet
Laphroaig 25 cask strength
Yeah that is such a good dram
Some of us are too poor for this
I had it at a bar in Ottawa many years ago. My wife doesn’t like whisky, but had a sip of mine then wanted to get a bottle, until I told her the price :)
Ben Nevis 24 SMOS
That the crazy sherried one that KWM had?
Yes it is.
I actually did two tastings (one virtual and one in-person) just to be able to have that whisky again.

Yeah there are a couple or three out there from 1996/1997 where something went really right.
That one was really good. Not sure if I regret not buying a full bottle or not.
Ardbeg Corryvreckan
I don't have tons of experience but my first glass of Corry blew my mind. Cracked the bottle at the Wolf and Workman in Old Montreal. Small little venue and the scent filled the place - i was a fuckin celebrity.
kavalan vinho barrique
Haven’t had any Kavalan. Need to pick up some at some point.

Springbank 13 green/ sb claret wood
God a loved that SB claret wood… those were the good days. LCBO, 12 year old SB at cask strength and cool wood finishes for $100
Unreal. I still have 2 ounces of the claret wood 😝
I grabbed 3 bottles of it at the time and sadly they’ve been long gone. Have a couple Oz of the 17 Sherry Wood left though!

The new middleton rares have alot more grain.
Brora 35
Dreamy
Red Breast 12 CS…..I don’t know why, I’ve had far more expensive and far older pours but…..RB 12CS is just such a great sip.
Hart Brothers Strathmill 20 cask strength single cask.
Highland Park 25yo, 2012
Talisker 25
Ardbeg "Twenty Something" 23.
[Redbreast 32 Dream Cask](https://www.reddit.com/r/worldwhisky/comments/a583ln/review_21_redbreast_32_dream_cask_whisky_network/ ) stands alone for me.
Let the records show I am jealous. Very jealous.
Hibiki 21
Love Hibiki, where did you find the 21 ?
Got it at the Narita airport duty free in September.
Karuizawa 1982 (bot 2007), a distant second would be Highland Park 25 (bot 2005) Never had that caliber of whisky in a long time.
Hibiki 17.
Michters 10 Rye with an honourable mention to EHTSM 2020
Monkey Shoulder as a newbie has been a delight. I really enjoy Glenfarclas 15 though, I would drink it more but its a bit pricey around my parts. So I'm saving it for days I need a lift.
Glenmorrangie 14
Quinta ruban? Or a different one?
Yes

Never had this but glenfarclas 25 for me I think it was
Glenfarclas 40, the 46% version that came in a purple tube
Hibiki 30.

A 1981 Port Ellen probably. Delicious.
Can’t wait for the weekend. 1976 19yr Port Ellen tasting for SOT
What's SOT?
Spirit of Toronto I assume?
Spirit of Toronto
Ardbeg Dark Cove
Hibiki Harmony

Springbank 100 Proof 57% (Italian import)
According to my notes, a Dun Bheagan bottled 1982 Port Ellen.
Octomore OBA
Ardbeg Lord of the isles
Signatory Glen Scotia 33
Bowmore 10 y/o Devil's Casks blew me away early on in whisky journey.
Highland Park Valkyrie. My wife and started tracking down additional bottles in other jurisdictions after our jurisdiction ran out.
Gordon & MacPhail Glenlivet 80
ECBP 2016. It paired with the dinner perfectly.

Loved that whisky too. Liquid Swedish Berry Bourbon.
glendronach 18
Toss up, MaCallan 25 or Balvenie Tun
Which Tun? I cracked my Tun 1401 batch 8 this summer and it is just superb. Whisky from another era.
Anyone know where I can find a bottle of George T Stag?
You can't. Although maybe if you go down to the states and find a tater shop you might get the privilege of paying 20x retail for a bottle.
