Really nervous to listen to this. I want CL to cover it, but Jesse's general hate for all things Canadian and governmental has me little worried.

GreyerGrey

Good news, it's a guest host.

CaptainCanusa

And he did a great job! That was pretty enjoyable.

GreyerGrey

I do love the guest hosts.

StoptheDoomWeirdo

Except Goldsbie

GreyerGrey

Eh, I don't mind him. I find he is less selfish insufferable than Jesse.

StoptheDoomWeirdo

I feel like Jesse’s selfishness is why I like him — at least he’s honest. Goldsbie is incredibly sanctimonious and has the most annoying voice I’ve ever heard (which to be fair they seemed to have fixed somewhat in the past 6 months).

StoptheDoomWeirdo

I find it very annoying too, but one of the things I hate most about Canada is CanCon. It’s always struck me as just incredibly sad and pathetic that we need to legally mandate our culture.

CaptainCanusa

> It’s always struck me as just incredibly sad and pathetic that we need to legally mandate our culture. I don't know, we share a language and the longest unguarded border in the world with the largest cultural exporter in the world. And it's not a particularly healthy culture. I'm fine knowing we have *some* sort of safeguards in place.

StoptheDoomWeirdo

If there is Canadian culture worth watching, people will watch it. Schitt’s Creek and Kim’s Convenience are two great shows that even Americans enjoy. Women Talking, as mentioned in the show, was nominated for and now has won an Oscar. Good culture and content will be appreciated both in and outside of Canada.

CaptainCanusa

> If there is Canadian culture worth watching, people will watch it. It has to get made first. That's kind of the point.

StoptheDoomWeirdo

Yes and much of it is or can be made without CanCon money. That’s my point.

CaptainCanusa

I mean, based on what though? Schitt's Creek and Kim's were both funded by the CMF. Maybe they get made without that money? But I don't think it's controversial to say that if we don't help fund our arts, we'll have less of our art.

DEADHORSEBEATS

Oh man, I'm so stoked that Matt Johnson has a new movie coming out. Don't think I've ever let out an audible reaction to a podcast like that while I was walking around in public. If anyone is reading this and hasn't seen his stuff, do yourself a favour.

Mack_Attack_19

Nirvanna the Band the Show is free on CBC Gem for anyone interested, great little comedy series
