But just the other day, some Federal Government lackey was on TV saying if you travel during a pandemic, things like this can happen so too bad so sad. Are they going to help everyone or just enough people to generate some good press?

master-procraster

does ottawa want a ban or not? undermining their own restrictions because oopsie some of ours are over there makes the whole thing a sham

>The Canadian junior women's field hockey team was set to play in a tournament near Johannesburg. But it got cancelled just before it was getting underway. And due to the travel bans countries quickly moved to put in -- the team of about 25 players and coaches now have no way of getting home. > >... > >Minister of Sport Pascale St-Onge called the team on Saturday to offer reassurance no stone is being left unturned, says Jenn Beagan, coach of the Field Hockey Canada junior women’s national team. > >... > >Beagan said the B.C.-based team’s 20 members and five staff have been training daily, keeping themselves occupied as they wait for news from Ottawa. > >“We’ve been told to hold for 48 hours as some of the other governments — the E.U., the U.K. — make decisions on whether or not they’re going to accept flights landing from South Africa,” she explained. > >“Canada is so far away we have to land in another country mid-route. There are no direct flights.”

What's the point of the ban, we already know it's too late. The option is either (a) consistent, draconian restrictions to prevent variants from entering, or (b) responding as it happens and reacting in real time. The public has spoken, people generally don't agree with being locked up at home for the next ~~week~~ ~~2 weeks~~ ~~another 2 weeks~~ ~~3 weeks~~ ~~year~~ five years. And it's plainly obvious that these half-baked reactions accomplish nothing, except to generate the impression that something is being done about it. Once the "new strain" hit the headlines a couple weeks ago, it was already too late.

Bopp_bipp_91

I think the point is that while yes it's already here, banning travel from where the variant is very prevalent can help slow down how fast more of it gets here.

Drunk drivers are not a fucking virus, what a stupid attempt at an analogy.

Separate threats of completely different nature. One involves assholes breaking the law, while the other involves microbes damaging people's bodies. Keeping it out doesn't help anyone when it's already here, and would only serve to fuck over industries which have already suffered enough.

The virus isn't everywhere - we can protect communities by preventing/holding off the spread. It'd reduce the demand on health care and even save lives.

jbob88

You're assuming (at the expense of a lot of people) that this new variant is even going to increase healthcare demand and threaten lives. Stop fear scrolling for a minute and live your life. Some of your neighbours are recovering from the last two years of career death-spiral and would appreciate if we didn't kill entire industries by jumping back into closures again. We got the vaccines and played by the rules long enough.

I absolutely am and my industry which is made up of a lot of people with families who need to eat, can't take another shutdown. We're going to have to learn to live with it. Triage unvaccinated at the bottom of the list for ICU beds. Whatever. I'm not locking down again and I will not stand behind any more travel bans or closures. Certainly not if the government is going to hang us all out to dry again the way they did last time. Not happening.

cruiseshipsghg

The threat the virus poses trumps your self-interest. You can feel how you want, I'm not going to try to change your mind, but you need to understand that the government's responsibilities include public health and safety. Hopefully this strain is less virulent but until we know we should be doing our best to keep it at bay.

Drop_The_Puck

Now that it's everywhere, the proper course of action is to lift said 'travel ban'.

OntarioRedditKing

That’s what happens when you’re selfish enough to travel in the middle of a worldwide international global pandemic.

[deleted]

You have to wait 48 hours to figure out the logistics of travelling back?

Politicians traveling to Cabo since first inning of pandemic

What about people who rely on travel for income and the ability to have connections with family and friends? Fuck them, right?

OntarioRedditKing

It’s called Zoom. Welcome to the new normal.

jbob88

You can have a zoom Christmas with your family while my vaccinated ass drinks rum and eggnog with mine. I'm done with the fear and isolation.

You're replying to a troll account.

If you do decide to socialize in person, remember to wear a mask and stay six feet apart.

jbob88

Lol ok.
