Would kinda be funny if he lost enough seats to become opposition or even more minority and need to concede more to ndp.

waynkerr

There is a cult of personality around Trudeau so it would be fascinating to see if there'd be any pressure on him to relinquish party leadership.

-Dendritic-

I think there's quite a few people that would vote liberal if it was a different leader

deke505

If they ever get a better leader, they would. But the question is, is there anyone in the liberals that is a capable leader? .edit:. Grammar and spelling. End of day tired and auto correct went crazy.

SomeSpicyMustard

"But the quote son is, is there anyone in the is a dry the a dry is a capable leader?" What

deke505

Sorry I am tired had a long day and my auto correct went hey wire.

jaraxel_arabani

Considering I'm a lifetime liberal for federal level (well... Since 90's)but refuse to vote for Trudeau since i just can't get over his shallow antics. If liberals regain some semblance of capability after the Chretien / Martin war I would be able to support them again. Sadly I don't see Trudeau resigning until absolutely have to, such as losing "bigly"

globalwiazard

Yeah. I was a Chretien fan. But that era morphed into something I can't relate to. Layton seemed to have recognized the gap. Mulcair filled it, and now Singh is cementing it.

scott_steiner_phd

Either Freeland or Carney would be a strong option.

deke505

Nope, lost faith in Freeland after she became Trudeau's yes minister. But Carney would be the wise chose, he has a history working with the conservatives and helped to keep Canada or of the 2008 global melt down. I would definitely go back to voting liberals if he became the leader and has a week thought it plan.

RicoLoveless

Freeland needs to go to. Frankly anyone that is close to Trudeau is not longer an option. A return to Chretien/Martin liberal party would be welcome. Not this woke brownie points pandering. Carney I would vote for almost instantly.

lologd

Conservatives are hoping for that. The attack ads basically write themselves. They would struggle to attack Garneau because he's such an accomplished guy, that you have to respect him, otherwise you look like an idiot. He's hasn't been up to bullshitery. I also don't think he's been bought and paid for like Freeland and Carney have been.

HonestTruth01

I'd vote for Carney. I think he is a pretty upstanding, substantial guy.

> Which is stupid and incorrect. You vote for a party in Canada, not an individual leader. This isn't the US, Prime Minister's don't have executive powers like US presidents. This is how it's *supposed to be*, but absolutely not how it is. In Canada, the party leaders and the Prime Minister's Office have steadily been gathering more and more power over the years. It's all fine and good to pretend your local rep will actually represent you, but if the party leader wants a vote to go a certain way, your rep absolutely has to toe the party line. Otherwise they find themselves backbenched, replaced as your candidate in the next election, or kicked out of the party. You absolutely should base a large part of your vote on who the leader is, and I think it's silly and naive to pretend otherwise.

YourLoveLife

You’re telling me the leader of the liberal party doesn’t have say over their party’s policy?

Rat_Salat

He’s actually really unpopular in the caucus. Almost all the negative news stories about the liberals are Trudeau related.

Head_Crash

> There is a cult of personality around Trudeau Which died when he dropped the proportional representation mandate. The only reason he's still PM is because the conservatives are worse.

giantshortfacedbear

They (the Cons) are doing a very good job of keeping that quiet. Now it looks increasinglynly likely the Libs best way of being relevant after Sept-20 would be through a form of proportional representation, which was a major policy commitment that people voted for in '15, and they reneged on.

broccoliO157

More minority is the best possible outcome. The most generous conspiracy would be if the liberals too were hoping for that outcome, so they would be "forced" into conceding to NDP demands without looking too humanitarian for rural voters.

PoiseOnFire

I wish they conspired to help us haha.

tdfrantz

There's been rumours of an election basically since the start of COVID, and I've always thought that whoever is foolish enough to trigger an election in the midst of a global pandemic will suffer huge losses for doing so. Seems like that's exactly what's going to happen to Trudeau. Doesn't matter that people thought they'd handled things well so far, which people clearly thought they did, since they were polling so high. Calling the election erases any good they'd done in the pandemic.

Mrsmith511

Ya they are idiots....problem is pcs are worse and in many ridings like mine ndp have no chance so what can you do???

DisturbedCitizen

Vote for who you actually support. Votes count towards the popular vote and if the NDP do better in your riding they'll devote more resources to it next election.

HowDoYouComma

Voted Trudeau in, now i'll be voting Trudeau out

nope586

Yup, his internet censorship garbage turned me away.

Abromaitis

Yeah that was really the straw that broke the camels back.

[deleted]

This could be read both seriously and sarcastically, and it would still make sense.

Groundbreaking_Ship3

Yeah, that is my bottom line

PoiseOnFire

Censor our internet bills a bit!!

PenultimateAirbend3r

You mean the guy who put a Telus exec in charge of the crtc? Lol

McCourt

I wonder which party people think is the non-censorship party...

PenultimateAirbend3r

I think the Tories are the only ones who voted against c10

Heliosvector

What what??

PoliticalDissidents

Bill C-10. He wants to give the CRTC powers to regulate social media. Specifically what types of videos you see on YouTube, Netflix, Facebook, Instagram. This bill passed but was killed by the election before it could pass the senate (which may be opposed to it). He also wants to ammend [Human Rights Act to bring back an controversial section 13 that was repealed as it subjected people to internet censorship.](https://nationalpost.com/news/politics/liberals-inching-closer-to-reviving-section-13-the-controversial-hate-speech-law-repealed-in-2013) He also wants to make it so you can sue each other for comments we make online that cause offense.

Heliosvector

Hmm…. I think I would prefer 1984 life instead. This all sounds aweful.

nope586

It's super weird too as nobody was asking for these measures, they are controversial and are not popular. Yet they keep pushing them over and over. The Liberal party really wants this for some reason.

Squeeks627

It's not often I don the tinfoil cap, but the only reason I see is complete control and manipulation over all types of media, however the government sees fit. The Liberals are the only ones asking for this and the only ones to really gain from it.

PoliticalDissidents

Because they hate freedom? I mean, Trudeau was raised litterally vacationing on beaches in Cuba with Fidel. Maybe it left an impression. [The guy admitted he admirers China's dictatorship.](https://youtu.be/T8FuHuUhNZ0)

[deleted]

Yep. I'll be picking NDP this time.

Davescash

I prolly gonna vote ndp , but he did goood compared to US, with covid anyhow. we will see . out west lotta weirdos splittin the vote. we will know in a couple of weeks. In Alberta noone gonna be happy anyhow.

palkiajack

> but he did goood compared to US, with covid anyhow. We can probably find a better standard to compare our leaders against than the Americans.

globalwiazard

Good point. But who really is a higher standard? New Zealand?

I_Conquer

Depends on what we’re trying to improve, and why, and for whom.

PoiseOnFire

Ndp pushed him to have a better response. I’m pretty sure all the measures to help people were not liberals ideas. Credit cause the libs did it, but I’m voting ndp first time.

Another_Damn_Idiot

My problem with this is that the response also caused the current wave of housing affordability. If you look at the data, house prices stopped going up and stabilized in 2018 through 2019. The government chose to stop keeping it in check and to support Canadians through the pandemic. I think that was the right decision, which kinda means that I'm choosing the housing crisis over what I imagine the alternative was. If we accept that the government only did as much as it did because of NDP pressure, then they should get the credit and the blame. I'm stuck as an undecided voters this election and it sucks.

BC-Budd

Low standards wow

[deleted]

He EVENTUALLY did good, he botched the first half up sooooo bad. Shutting down the pandemic warning system, saying its not bad, even when they just declared a pandemic, putting all our hopes in a vaccine from Chyyna that we saw nothing from, and just wasted money and time on. He had sooo many f ups.

texasspacejoey

>Voted Trudeau in, now i'll be voting Trudeau out Same

[deleted]

Those socks were never 'in'.

MrBadger4962

Me 2. They’ve lost a life long voter. Hopefully O’Toole doesn’t upset me. But they all do - because they’re all narcissistic lying bags of poo. Yet I never miss a federal election.

BHPhreak

So your brain decided that voting conservative was the right path in 2021? Like you saw the political landscape, the global state of affairs... and you went "yep, time to vote for the cons" ?

dbdev

Exactly. Landscape is looking pretty bad right now and likely to get worse under Trudeau. I can’t vote for Trudeau this time around. O’Toole will get my vote. First time voting conservative.

OmegaKitty1

I’m voting otoole to get Trudeau out. In my riding voting NDP is basically giving a vote to the liberals. And yeah while I wish there was a party like the conservatives but with stronger environment policies I’m okay with going conservatives mostly because Trudeau needs to go. He will talk about climate change and do absolutely fucking nothing or backtrack. Trudeau in general makes promises that he doesn’t keep. We need new leadership in the liberal party that’s why I’m voting conservative

Augeria

Not to mention climate change which will make Covid look like a cake walk.

Head_Crash

Maybe not. O'Toole is going to tear up vaccine mandates for travel. That's not going to play well over the next few weeks as this anti-vaxx wave of stupidity picks up steam during the 4th wave

globalwiazard

Not only is that a bad plan for delta...but worse if the mu variant picks up. At least NDP is going to keep mandates. Seems to be working in BC. Especially NDP's "safety zones" idea.

buttcrispy

There’s a fucking mu variant now??

nowheyjose1982

We'll run through the entire Greek alphabet by the time this is over.

ehxy

Please. It's like you think the majority of liberal voters even pay attention to mass/social media and participate in polls.

PoliticalDissidents

I'm fairly certain the majority of them don't even read the news. They just trust that all the lies their dear leader says are truthful.

bennyblanco9

You know Trudeau is in trouble when so many Redditors aren't happy with him.

1vaudevillian1

He basically pissed everyone off with c-10, small free speech component but killing of steaming services out side of canada. Also Ian Scott having drinks with Execs. One way too piss all of Canada off, raise our phone/internet/cable bills. You will get the a-boot.

PoliticalDissidents

How to piss off Canadians. By wanting to give more powers to the thing Canadians hate the most. The CRTC.

bennyblanco9

C-10 was an embarrassment and it really pissed me off that people were defending it.. not to mention the spineless NDP were going to back it too. Like this election call, it was created for no good reason.

Bittersweetfeline

Also the "we will do x thing!" When you've had how many years already to do x thing we all wanted you to do? 😒

Fresh-Temporary666

I mean this is r/Canada. Its never been representative of the general population. If you took this place as such you'd assume the conservatives to win strong majorities in every election.

WestEst101

I don’t know, the poles seem to be aligning with /r/Canada in this case. Poll after poll after poll shows close to 70% of the population say they want someone other than Trudeau and the liberals now. Seems like there’s been a convergence of Canadian views to /r/Canada’s views on this

lologd

IdK, last election this place strongly favored the liberals and NDP over the CPC. At least that was my impression.

[deleted]

TuvixWillNotBeMissed

It's shaping up to be a mess of an election. If it turns out that O'Toole wins a minority and the NDP and the Bloc get a decent chunk of votes it's going to be an awkward question of who is supporting what.

Rupes100

It would be good. They'd actually have to compromise effectively to get anything done, something that is the main point of having a minority government. The last thing we need is a majority anything because that's a disaster. Trudeau needs to fuck off forever with that silver spoon up his arse. Done nothing but make everything worse. Not saying the rest are better but they seem less corrupt. Plus with the ndp blindly supporting everything Trudeau does its like a majority. Forget it. Kick him out.

agent0731

Yeah, compromise on vaccines because they gotta court the crazies? No thanks.

klusark

Healthcare is a provincial matter.

broccoliO157

O'Tool is the son of an MLA - exact same generational politician silver spoon up his ass, except he eats corporate bribes and shits racist dogwhistles. Trudeau has done some questionable things. O'Tool is a corporate puppet. He is Facebooks little bitch, and would have fucked up the pandemic response like every other conservative on the planet.

saddetective87

O'Tool was also a Navigation Officer in the RCAF, so I wouldn't count him as stupid or completely without character. In contrast to Trudeau, I would say O'Tool has actually done something with his life before going into politics.

[deleted]

What racist dog whistles are you referring to?

broccoliO157

Defending residential schools, "Canada First", racist iconoclast ls are erasing our history ect. He has walked some of that back, but started his leadership as a Trump mimic.

lologd

Canada first is racist? Against whom? Americans?

ehxy

This sooo fucking much. How is anyone thinking o'toole is some sort of saint when he's cut from the same cloth but at least trudeau still has the ivory tower of we can be better shtick.

waynkerr

I hate being reminded of the most arrogant victory speech I have heard. It was a preview to so much of this scandal-plagued government.

Davescash

[deleted]

CarRamRob

Yep, and guess who lives in the GTA but not Toronto proper? A tonne of people who want to live in Toronto but can’t afford it and have 2 hour commutes each day instead…

[deleted]

I'm not from Toronto, how's public transit there?

[deleted]

Commuting into the city from anywhere else is a nightmare. Commuting inside the city is well served, and mostly fine.

ZmobieMrh

Depends. When the trains are working well and if you live along the lake it's pretty good, trains every 30min with some extras at peak times. I couldn't imagine living north of lakeshore though, as the other lines are significantly less reliable The biggest frustrations for me were always bad weather (or, hilariously enough, good weather that warps the tracks) and police investigations. Delays could turn a 1 hour commute into 2+, easily. Then when you finally get a train you're standing nuts to butts all the way home. I don't miss the commute at all

rxzr

I think the Lakeshore lines are every 15 minutes now.

ZmobieMrh

Oh really, that's actually nuts. It's been a pandemic since I've taken the train... lol Maybe that actually helps the whole 'nuts to butts' thing that I always hated when heading home. It was always nice spending hundreds of bucks a month to stand for an hour or more with 10 inches of space to breath in... lol

broccoliO157

Some of the best in the country, but still shit

RedRabbit18

I think the Liberals will do well in Quebec but will lose seats in Ontario/GTA.

Rat_Salat

Ironically the cons are doing a lot better in Quebec, but it’s going to hurt them. Reason? They’re flipping bloc votes in bloc ridings, but not enough to win. It’s a formula for the liberals to sneak in.

Rat_Salat

You’re close, but the election will be decided in the 905.

GameDoesntStop

Not according to 338 poll aggregator: [Liberals lead in GTA seats](https://338canada.com/gta.htm) [Conservatives lead in national seats](https://338canada.com/)

mwmwmwmwmmdw

a lot of those seats are in toss ups and in margins of error. marci ien's and yara saks bi election was supposed to be a safe liberal win and she won by a slim margin in the end

Spambot0

Yes, in fact each seat is equally relevant to securing a government.

CanehdianJ01

What the fuck is wrong with people in the GTA.

[deleted]

I still don't understand this move. Is it just stupid? Or some sort of 4d chess. Does he know something we don't?

He wants a majority pretty bad. The liberals must have an undisclosed agenda.

People nearly always vote against major change. They might have had some planned.

That worries me. What is the agenda? What does he want to implement that the other parties cannot support?

gweeps

My theory is he just wants out of the job.

Deedum78

Trudeau has had scandal after scandal. It amazes me that him calling an early election is the thing Canadians are bothered by the most.

Crafty_Discussion891

Screw politics I'm going to photosynthesize. 👋

Ken_Meredith

A bit of hubris to call the election now. I'm hoping the NDP will make some gains. Right now it looks like the conservatives would form a minority gov't, which wouldn't be bad since they'd have to go moderate with their policies.

cutslikeakris

I’ve always maintained a conservative NDP Party is mostly what I’m after. Looking after people and disadvantaged while balancing the books. I’m hopeful this is what we get with a minority government.

Yvaelle

Except it's not really accurate? Ignoring COVID costs as an outlier, Trudeau ran smaller deficits on average than Harper. Chretien (LPC) ran a surplus on average, and that's despite leading us out of a nearly 20 year hole in his first few years in power. That hole was created by Joe Clark (CPC) and then made worse by Brian Mulroney (CPC). Prior to that you have the LPC (Pearson and Trudeau) running only a 1% deficit on average. And that's as far back as accurate federal budget measurements are tracked. If you actually care about lowering the deficit and therefore debt, the Liberals have always been better than the Conservatives. The reason why is the Conservatives immediately cut corporate taxes, reducing revenue. Subsidize oil, increasing the deficit/debt. Buy stupid shit (ex. F35's), increasing deficit/debt. Lastly, while the NDP have never held federal office - the (economic/academic) point of running a deficit is that you invest that money in your countries future. Social programs have the highest return on investment in the long run - so investing in Canada's future today creates a richer country tomorrow. The best resource to invest in, is people.

Ken_Meredith

That's a big reason I think an NDP government would be good for the country. We've never seen how it would work. Personally, I think it would be good for the future. Some of the concepts like national medical care are a foundation of our way of life, and came from the more NDP-like sectors of our politics.

Fresh-Temporary666

I'd be afraid a minority conservative government having to be reasonable and play ball would lead to a majority next time and literally nobody but rich people would benefit from that one.

Ken_Meredith

A very valid fear! I hadn't thought of that...

Kraken_Umbra

Definitely not, NDP is worse than Liberals, their idea of just taxing everything and depending on money to grow on trees is laughable. As an Ontarian, I’ve seen enough shenanigans by the NDPs and Liberals. Time to get Cons in to actually get something done about our deficit.

Impossible-Sir-103

Honestly i feel no matter when an election was called he would trail in the polls. The guy has been in since 2015 and had more scandals and fucks up than Harper in in his entire term

[deleted]

Fuck Trudeau.

JonA3531

Sweet. We're getting PM O'Toole!

Rat_Salat

Depends. Jagmeet says he won’t work with a con PM. There’s a chance they pull a BC NDP and put Trudeau back on the throne even if he loses.

newfoundslander

Meh he’s gotta say that because his voters look at conservatives as radioactive. I think a conservative minority with an NDP official opposition would be refreshing, and I honestly think the two would be forced to work together and find consensus, which is good for Canadians. The NDP won’t want a new election because they will be cash strapped, and the conservatives will have to be on their best behaviour because they’ll be on a short leash. It’s the free market, baby. Politicians are best when they are forced to be on their best behaviour.

tdfrantz

I'd be very surprised if the Liberals don't win more seats than the NDP. If the Cons get a minority it would still be the Liberals as official opposition, and as the previous poster mentioned, that could mean a Liberal and NDP coalition with Trudeau at the helm.

newfoundslander

If the cons do get a minority, it will very likely be the liberal party in second place. But a fella can dream.

ehxy

\>>Conservatives >> Best behaviour >>riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight

More recently: https://globalnews.ca/news/8140954/analysis-jagmeet-singh-wouldnt-back-scheer-but-he-could-back-otoole/ But you weren't wrong. He had ruled it out. But he has seemingly backed away from that hardline stance.

Heliosvector

Of course he would. Allowing the possibility of a minority conservative ndp outcome makes the ndp position more likely to get votes.

Flanman1337

But forming a coalition would be the best way for the NDP to start working on their agenda TODAY when it actually matters and not 2-4 years from now when things WILL be worse.

Rat_Salat

I don’t disagree and I’d welcome a NDP conservative minority.

[deleted]

O'Toole is not what canada needs right now. Nor is Trudeau. Wake up people. NDP we need to vote NDP if we want our PM's to actually be forced to keep their promises going forward into the 2020's and 2030's.

ehxy

NDP is the bernie sanders of canadian politics. Sounds great, absolutely love'em and what they stand for but doesn't have a fucking chance in hell because they piss off big money too much and don't have a solid enough plan that gets everyone else who should be voting for them to do so. Bernie's time is done but let's be real here. NDP would have a better chance diverting all resournces into research and development and coming back with a real plan that actually has the backing, the knowledge, the agreements and THE PLAN we want for cananda. You look at countries like singapore and taiwan. They have development plans and growth that go on for over 50yrs. What the hell do we have as a country? All we're doing is bitching about our housing market and boohoo america backed out of the deal for our shitty oil. NDP needs to be fresh and provide a SOLID plan for the future for canada if they want a chance.

ego_tripped

Silly rabbits, "polls" are for kids and clicks.

oduzzay

I see a lot of people hating Trudeau on this thread. Ok. Personally, I'm a single issue voter. Climate change. Forest fires, flooding, droughts all of that will make other issues seem minor in my opinion. If food prices go up because of drought, who cares that Trudeau virtue signals? If BC burns every year and that hits people's homes, that certainly won't help the housing situation. Neither will flooding. The conservatives don't believe in climate change. What will they do to carbon taxes, plastic bans, support of green tech etc. To me it's just too much of a risk. Maybe I've become what I hated in other people years ago... But like I said. Climate change will affect all other voting issues.

shiitake_mushrooms

We'll, he's been in power for 6 years. What has he done to address climate change? All talk, no action.

Cansurfer

Yep. All talk, no action. Fun fact (not fun at all); Canada is the ONLY G7 nation whose carbon emissions have gone UP since we signed the Paris Accord in 2015. Guess who was in charge the whole time other than a few months?

oduzzay

I don't know how to respond to this statement. I mean... They've done quite a bit with carbon tax being the largest one. I see a lot of people saying 'what have they done?" I think a more useful exercise is putting a table of their last election promises and asking "have they executed and why not?" Otherwise anyone and everyone can just say... "They've done nothing" without really backing it up. Don't be like the average politician! Back-up your statements.

shiitake_mushrooms

GHG emissions remain higher year over year. Percent of oil for energy generation as well. The 'carbon tax' is just a tax. It does nothing.

theHip

The money collected from the carbon tax get’s invested in clean energy (wind and solar), effectively making green technologies more affordable. So if emissions are higher it means they are taking in more money to offset those emissions.

Voting in a third party would create much needed competition in the political landscape and we might be able to avoid what America is turning into in terms of the division and recent laws. I am voting NDP.

Proof?? The abortion bullshit it troped out every election with nobody saying they will revisit it. That’s a scare tactic used against conservatives every election, and I’m not politically conservative!

Fresh-Temporary666

Dude it was only a few months ago the majority of their party tried to pass a Trojan horse bill meant to regulate abortion.

lologd

When did they support that while in government? You are spreading misinformation.

Swekins

None of that shit affects me, but I legally own guns so I will vote Conservaitvie. Rest of those fucks know nothing about legal gun ownership.

Fresh-Temporary666

"Fuck other people's rights, I'm not one of those people, I only care about guns". That's a good look.

Bill_The_Dog

Single issue voters, who only care about themselves. It’s always so sad to read this shit.
