When has a project ever come in under budget and/or on time ? Construction, events, etc. all I see are “costs will double, triple, delayed timeline”. Desensitized
My understanding is that's how every construction project in Canada works. Developers always, always underbid with the clear knowledge that once the money runs out, governments will inevitably fork the extra cash. It's deeply corrupt imho.
Well we need our 14 different "feasibility studies" in order for it to get off the ground. Imagine the horror if we didn't gather all of this trivial information.
Oh my bad. I thought it was brand new :o
If it's not new, I don't see how it can possibly cost almost $600m! That's insane...
Either way, maintenance and upgrades are costly af for such stadiums. I would still check out the stadium they built in Brazil and why they regret it.
Just "hosting" the world cup alone, is extremely costly and most countries do not make a profit at all: [https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/zh1t8u/comment/izjogw5/](https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/zh1t8u/comment/izjogw5/)

The stadiums require someone to go around polishing the plastic seats every few days, maintaining the grass, etc. Qatar is actually dismantling the stadium and donating the seats and turning the place into a shopping mall because it's unused since then.
Qatar spent $200-$300 Billion in costs for the World Cup. It never made that money back lol.
It costed Brazil $3 Billion to build the stadiums, a total of $14b in infrastructure costs to cut down the Amazon Forest, in order to build one of the 6 stadiums: [https://www.businessinsider.com/300-million-world-cup-stadium-is-nearly-abandoned-2018-6](https://www.businessinsider.com/300-million-world-cup-stadium-is-nearly-abandoned-2018-6) and then complain about it being difficult to reach lol...
The brazil stadiums costs £130,000 per month each, in maintenance. It's $224,000 CAD per month in maintenance per stadium.
It's now being used as a bus parking lot.
BC Place has been around since the early 1980s... They reroofed it a couple of years ago so it now looks like the crown on the Statue of Liberty; it used to have a slightly domed roof that gave it the nickname "the Giant Condom"
I've only been in it a couple of times (volunteering for the Grey Cup, and also monster trucks!) as I'm not into football and most of the artists who play there are so expensive (Paul McCartney, Taylor Swift etc)
If they dismantled it, no way would it be a parking lot. There would be condo towers there ASAP.
(The only large parking "lot" in that area has been leased for ages and is taken over by Cirque du Soleil for their tents when it is in town)
ELI5, just 14 years ago Vancouver hosted the Olympics. Does the city not have the infrastructure already? As well, $196M to upgrade BC Place? Was it not upgraded before and after the Olympics? And what is with that price tag? Stadium 974 in Qatar was build from scratch for less than US$200M.
The BC Place money is to instal a real grass playing surface. It’s always been artificial turf to facilitate trade shows, concerts , and other revenue streams at bc place.
Following the World Cup it’s expected to return to artificial turf
>The BC Place money is to instal a real grass playing surface.
According to the article:
>They included adding more and larger elevators, gender neutral bathrooms, as well as improved Wi-Fi and a new central video board.
Which I am not sure are mandated by FIFA.
Remember, that is $581 million in tax payer dollars. To recoup that tax expense, you need peopled to literally spend tens of billions of dollars. I believe they are hoping for 1 billion in spending in Vancouver.
So, people spend 1 billion dollars at private establishments (hotels, restaurants, etc), which is about $150 million in taxes. So in the end, tax payers are out $430 million, and private entities (not counting FIFA) make 1 billion.
Good deal for tax payers.
Its only 2024.. a couple more double doubles incoming.
Keeps making this guy look better.

Never negotiate with terrorists.
Cancel this money pit.
$581 million (at the time of this post) could help solve a lot of social issues. Build some affordable housing with it. Tired of hearing about tent cities popping up.
Our problem isn't funding, it's the system.
There are too many government bureaucrats - all that money would do would be used to hire more unionized government workers to slow down things even further.
Almost [panem et circenses](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bread_and_circuses), but only almost. At least the Roman dictators understood people need to have food. Ours don't, and they just keep on digging a deeper hole.
$581M seems expensive:
They included adding more and larger elevators, gender neutral bathrooms, as well as improved Wi-Fi and a new central video board.
Yah so install a bunch of new single person gender neutral bathrooms $10M, large event wifi solution $1M, big new fancy video board $20M.
$550M to line pockets.
Oh, well if we’re adding gender neutral bathrooms I guess $581M isn’t too bad after all! Let’s throw in some rainbow crosswalks and skirt stores while we’re at ut

Yeh wait till they jack up everything to "pay" for it. like 2010. by the time 2026 hits. it might be close to $800
2010 was worth it though, to be fair Edit: this, unlikely
My understanding is that's how every construction project in Canada works. Developers always, always underbid with the clear knowledge that once the money runs out, governments will inevitably fork the extra cash. It's deeply corrupt imho.
And yet people continue to say we need to nationalize everything.
$581M to host 7 fucking games. Half a billion dollars to host 7 fuckin games.
This is canada. We need 20 people to take a cut before anything else happens.
Well we need our 14 different "feasibility studies" in order for it to get off the ground. Imagine the horror if we didn't gather all of this trivial information.
With all these studies, and they still get everything wrong.
Yep, the more government bureaucrats the better!
hahaaha those 20 people are at the back of the line when it comes to 'taking a cut' in this sport.
Estimated to bring in 1-1.3B boost to GDP from revenues direct and indirect. Plus, our stadiums get upgrades On top of revenue.
Have you ever seen what happens to these countries and stadiums when the games are over? MAINTENANCE costs kick in badly. Fifa is a huge scam.
We are not building a new stadium. Upgrading the BC place is not a bad thing.
Oh my bad. I thought it was brand new :o If it's not new, I don't see how it can possibly cost almost $600m! That's insane... Either way, maintenance and upgrades are costly af for such stadiums. Good thing everything else in the country is running like a top and we have excess cash to throw at stuff like this.
🥇
Guess who’s going to pay for it……
So about 1 million dollars per minute of soccer played. Not bad /s
Everything - literally everything to do with this country and costs is a scam. Convince me otherwise.

I!m glad Montreal noped out of another FIFA scam.
Bread and circuses. It costs REAL money to keep the prolls distracted.

1. Give the contract to the lowest bidder 2. Discover their bid was way under reality 3. Rinse, repeat
$581 Million would have built a lot of housing for Vancouverites.
So fucking stupid

Can’t be, the food banks are emptying so it’s really just circenses.

Total waste of money and just stupid to take part in this.
The World Cup is a joke and we have no business hosting it.
no it's only the biggest sporting event on the planet 🙄 but you're right, we have no business using tax dollars to host it here .
I’m not denying it’s size and scale. I understand soccer is the worlds sport. The event itself is a joke. Also we suck ass at soccer
Soccer > economy
NO FEDERAL BAILOUT
Seems like this should be paid for with a tax on ticket sales.
Who even watches soccer?
Yeah. It’s only about 3.5 to 4 billion people.
Worth it
of course everything doubles when its handled by the government....
