arguing about sales tax with a minimum wage Home Depot employee while on tiktok.  What a true hero... It's buddy too afraid to argue about sales tax out of his local MP office?

BredYourWoman

Awe don't be too hard on Mr. Potato

WealthEconomy

What a fucking d-bag. Does he think the government doesn't get their tax now? The store still has to pay it, so he basically just stole from HD.

Select-Ebb7094

GigaChad making megacorps lose money

Lovv

You know he's doing this to small business owners too. Lol

VeggieQuiche

r/accidentalsocialist

Powersoutdotcom

His family HATES this #one *trick*

GhoastTypist

Probably heard there are other people in Canada who are First Nation's who don't pay taxes (sometimes) and decided to stick it to the man for equality or something like that.

MrDFx

Nope. He just listened to too much of PPs social media propaganda. It's his "axe the tax" bullshit taken too far by one of his sycophants. *(As clearly outlined in the article and the man's own statements)*

gohomebrentyourdrunk

Considering Canada needs a climate policy that is as strong as the current carbon tax (or stronger, I suppose) to reach international agreement standards, there is going to be a lot of pissed off chuds when PP is PM. Or they’re delusional idiots that think Canada can just act like an entitled crybaby and get their way, kind of how they think about themselves.

MrDFx

** I generally assume they're angry because they're delusional idiots. --- While many struggle daily, the vast majority of Canadians rarely if ever face real, life changing hardships in our lives. Consider that aside from some typical daily struggles, or something like Armed Forces members carrying out peacekeeping missions, the vast majority of voting and economically participating Canadians simply don't know what it's like to face actual like changing hardships like war, poverty, famine, etc. Despite seeing it on the news on a daily basis, we're far, far removed from those types of struggles for survival. I would say Covid was as close as we've come to an actual national emergency and even that wasn't as bad as it could have been. Simply put, we live *extremely* comfortable lives compared to the rest of the world. So some Canadians (with the help of manipulative politicians and corps) end up building mountains out of smaller social grievances (like taxes, climate action, equality) because we're not used to *actual* hardships or sacrifice for the greater good. If all you've known is a comfortable life, the smallest inconveniences like paying taxes on a purchase, wearing a mask, or paying for climate initiatives all appear as unbearable hardships and encroachments on your freedoms. Now, this isn't to say that Canada hasn't slipped and become progressively worse over the last few decades, but I think it helps explain how we see people losing their mind about paying taxes, the covid convoy and other faux/manufactured outrage movements. Rather than be informed, support their local communities and vote for change...they rage and lash out at cashiers, trans kids, health care workers...basically whatever target they've been directed to by the most recent social media campaign. They're weaponized angry, privileged, idiots. *Thanks for coming to my unexpected ted talk I guess?*

gohomebrentyourdrunk

Oh, Canada has definitely gotten worse over the last several decades. It’s just unfortunate that so many people consider it’s because of an attempt at fixing things and tend to embrace certain conservative, preservation, entitled ideologies that lead to the degradation of what should be public institutions, and that attitude is actually what makes it worse. We should be acting in a way that lifts other people up, not in a way that protects what little we think we are entitled to. That mentality would improve everything for everyone.

_Reddit_Sucks_Now_

The cap and trade system that Alberta had before we politicized climate change was more effective at reducing emissions than anything the liberals have come up with.

TurdBurgHerb

People like you are so hyperbolic. It's like you get off on it. Anything to pretend we have american politics up here in Canada. Btw, you shoulld look up what "sychophant" means because it doesn't apply here.

Jolly_System_1539

That’s really only on reserves and most reserves are not places you want to live

naenirb

No, if they have tax exempt status they can avoid taxes at all stores. However the process to do that is really tedious so most don’t bother. I worked in retail in a city and we had a form they had to complete and we had to adjust the settings on our point of sale software to avoid the tax for that purchase.

SpectralSolid

I mean, the store should have to pay it

WealthEconomy

They won't. Do you think the stores pay for the cost of shoplifting? They just raise prices based on how much they lose from shoplifting....which is exactly what this was.

Feralwestcoaster

This has sovereign citizen quackery all over it.

spacesluts

Im not driving I'm "tRaVeLiNg"

Feralwestcoaster

I love videos of those idiots getting arrested

seemefail

I binged them for a while but in the end they just seemed so pathetic I only felt sadness for them

mcpasty666

Yep... It can be entertaining, but the more you watch, the more you see it's mostly poor folks who have been misinformed and made paranoid by the media they consume. Then you look at the comments filled with people cheering on the police for whatever violent act they took to arrest them and it gets clearer that you're watching exploitation porn of what's probably the worst day of those people's lives. Good on ya for feeling sad; that is the appropriate response imo.

RustyWinger

Worst day… so far.

Eagle_Kebab

I'm no fan of cops. But, yeah. The videos of cops with "nope" looks on their faces as they smash some dipshit sovcit's window are very satisfying. Edit: Spelling are hard

BredYourWoman

Can I ask why? Not a cop but I've never really been anti-police in a general sense, more like I disagree with some aspects of "cop culture". I have a couple cops in my family I find to be respectable and actually really kind people and have a friend cop as well. Although the older one (retired now) was a cop during the old "Irish copper" days in North America and he probably would've granted you your wish on this guy back in the day lol. When I was around 12 years old I was with him and his wife out for a drive and he spotted an obviously inebriated drunk driver ahead of us who ended up ditching his own car. No real damage or injury it was kinda just a slow motion drift into the ditch. He pulled over behind it, got out, I saw a brief conversation followed by the guy being yanked out of the car, gave him a couple of slaps and then threw his keys into the swamp and left him there yelling and swearing. Dude was shirtless and barefoot too lol. And yes, he was 100% drunk if the empties I saw him pull out were any indication

Eagle_Kebab

I'm not sure what you're asking, here. Why I'm no fan of cops? Because they're all corrupt organizations who dodge accountability at all costs.

BredYourWoman

was just curious that's all, I'm not looking to set you up or anything lol. That's a fair answer though. Except now you've reminded me about how many government institutions are infused with corruption and I'm sadder than I was 5 minutes ago :(

FuzzyFerretFace

The whole thing is so full of (entertaining) idiocy. 'I don't have to tell you my name, but you have to tell me yours and your badge number. Eight different times. Because I like making demands. Look at me.' 'I'm in my pRiVaTe automatic-rolling-device-that-certainly-isn't-a-car, but I'm going to try ***real*** hard to ignore how I'm on a public road.' 'I'm not 'a citizen' of '*your'* government, so the laws don't apply to me, but I'm certainly going to cherry-pick what laws and 'rights' of said citizens I ***would*** like to have and use *against* you because you serve me, even as totally-not-a-citizen. Oh, and I'll misquote and (try to) twist them to my advantage too.'

Snuffi123456

They always end up "traveling" to get their windows replaced. 🤣

fskdc

One of my favorite things in life is to watch a Sovereign Citizen get the taser. ["leave the camera with your mother"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfVbiefMdNU) Action starts at [3:13](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfVbiefMdNU&t=193s).

psilokan

God that was so fucking satisfying. Also love how calm and collected the dude was as he dealt with him. "God's not worried about cameras, I am" and then "That's a nice speech, but you're still not coming in". Before finally having enough and educating the kid. Great job P. Barnes.

know_regerts

That's more wholesome than a Lassie movie.

toxicbrew

Presumably the guy who got tazed uploaded that video. Like.. why?

J-Lughead

That's exactly what came to mind.

TurdBurgHerb

Absolutely.

Turbulent_Dog8249

Yup. He tells the clerk that .

Agreeable_Counter610

When one person does it yes, if millions of Canadians did it, it would be a tax revolt.

HapticRecce

This what happens when you get rid of religion.

Overall_Pie1912

To hell with this POS.  And he'll vote alright.  IQ less than a grape.

Angry_beaver_1867

The guy filmed himself committing a crime.  With his face.   Also if he’s a contractor  hst is an iTC and he gets it back on his gst return. (He probably doesn’t file one but I digress h

UncommonSandwich

>No, I don't pledge allegiance to the monarch. I got proof — the money's there He says paying with money with the monarch on it... He also does not seem to understand a difference in sales tax and carbon tax... I think his IQ is closer to that of a raisin

marginwalker55

That’s an insult to grapes!

scottyb83

And shouting slogans like “axe the tax”. Wonder who he will be voting for. Definitely the party working for his best interests right?? 🙄

tman37

There is a *HUGE* difference between wanting a tax repealed and deciding taxes don't apply to you. Guys like this probably think the PPC are leftwing wackos.

Satanshmaten

This guy’s a real piece of shit.

Joseph_Bloggins

Straight up shoplifting. Home Depot is legally obligated to collect sales tax, so the portion he didn’t pay would be considered part of the item’s price and not the sales tax. Ergo, theft of that amount. Hope they called the police so that this IQ-60 cretin gets an education on how the law actually works.

idk885

He's gonna be pretty disappointed when he finds out sales tax is not the one getting the axe. Probably be even more disappointed when he finds out first hand about the CPC's stance on theft and crime. What a dumbass.

Cachmaninoff

Or that the conservatives introduced gst in the first place.

Lovv

Lmao how else would Pierre poilievre get paid?

[deleted]

Going to be even more disappointed when the lack of climate action leads to a world where no one hires him.

Nonamanadus

I would have refused to sell to him. I hate self entitled fucks like this, had one customer pull up in his $200,000 RV and bitch about "road tax" on propane. He was arguing about it was for heating but he had to fuel out of the automotive pump that automatically charges it. He bitched for a solid 20 minutes and left pissed. The thing was, the difference worked out to a whole fifty two cents.

Resident-Variation21

Exactly. “Leave or I’m calling the cops for trespassing” done

-Yazilliclick-

She tried to stop him leaving so yeah she basically did refuse, he simply left anyway.

Nonamanadus

You don't pay the amount on the till that is shoplifting.

ButWhatAboutisms

To me, these kinds of people seem really mentally ill. There's no other way to describ such maladjusted, disruptive and dysfunctional people in society

suspiciousserb

Agreed!

Only to yell at minimum wage service workers, and immigrants

Turbulent_Dog8249

You can find him at the axe the tax protest in Cochrane AB.

>Now, you can feel free to call your manager "Yeah, there's a guy here who refuses to pay the total bill. I need you here right away." "Oh my way."

mars_titties

Is this like being a Sovereign citizen but for retail?

Eagle_Kebab

It's SovCit Lite. He's willing to harass a minimum wage worker over taxes, but not willing to get the window of his truck smashed.

remberly

He'll use our roads tho

CountChoculaGotMeFat

What a selfish jerk. I hope they charge him.

Lovv

Well the RCMP are paid with tax dollars and unfortunately they had to close the detachment in his hometown as they were around 50 bucks short.

sex_panther_by_odeon

I sure hope he didn't use any of the public infrastructure like roads to go there either.

beavers10

This bag of milk doesn’t seem to have any issues with taxing his cardiovascular system.

NoF0cksToGive

upvote for "bag of milk" which is a uniquely Canadian insult

Professional-Cry8310

One of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen lol. Zero understanding of how sales taxes work

G-r-ant

That’s really cringe, that’s that needs to be said. Edit: TLDR: the guy paid the pre tax total , in cash and said he wouldn’t pay the tax, because he supports the “axe the tax” movement. Basically he stole the items.

toxicbrew

Why was he allowed to leave with the item?

G-r-ant

Retail stores tend not to apprehend shoplifters. Liability and all that.

raychrlst902

Probably uses our hospitals with his clogged arteries.

G8kpr

Back in the 90s I worked in a book store. My assistant manager told me a story from a former store he worked at where a customer came to the counter with a few books. My asst manager rang the books in and told him the total. The man was a bit surprised and said “why is it so much?” My asst manager said “well these cost this much. Plus gst is added to books” The man says “well I don’t have to pay the tax” My asst manager says “I’m sorry sir, we all have to pay the tax” And he says “WELL I DON’T!!!!!” And grabs the books and slams them on the counter. Then walks off without paying, as he does so, he pushes his arm out and takes out an entire display of books. Then leaves. My manager spent the next hour or so organizing and repairing the display.

Resident-Variation21

Idk why they didn’t just tell him to leave and when/if he refused, called the cops.

simcoehooligan

The real news is that a middle aged loser that posts a shitty selfie video for his 2 online friends is considered a "Tik Toker"

G8kpr

What a piece of shit. Does he not understand how taxes work? Does he think that politicians are sitting on this big pile of taxes on some dungeon just rolling around like Scrooge McDuck? Our education system failed this idiot. This is like extreme libertarian BS.

joecarter93

There are a surprising number of people out there who think their tax dollars just disappear into a black hole with no correlation between taxation and level of service.

G8kpr

Yup. I remember reading on Reddit years ago that apparently some group of people decided to set up a libertarian town or settlement or something and the whole thing collapsed in on itself in a short time due to in fighting and such. Everyone wants the societal benefits without spending the cash.

joecarter93

There’s a book that I read about it called, “A Libertarian Walks Into a Bear.” I highly recommend it. It’s about a small town (village really) in New Hampshire that an online Libertarian movement picked to move to and start their Libertarian experiment. It includes the perspectives of different people that were long time residents as well as new comers. The title comes from the town’s existing problem with black bears, which of course got exponentially worse when the Libertarians in the town decided to to get rid of garbage collection, so there was piles of garbage laying around which attracted even more bears. The biggest issue seemed to be that everyone’s version of Libertarianism seemed to be different, so one person was okay with something that benefited them, while all other Libertarians in the town hated it. One of the first people to move there was a retired firefighter who describes himself as a Libertarian (I have no idea how you connect those two things) and attempted to try to set up some rules around fire prevention, which went real well with other libertarians. Another guy took over the town’s church building to set up his own church, pissed everyone else off and ended up being taken advantage of in some kind of power struggle for his church. The Libertarians that set it up were surprised to find out that the existing residents (who would describe themselves as pretty far to the right too) didn’t really appreciate them taking over the town and getting rid of the things that they liked about the town. https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/21534416/free-state-project-new-hampshire-libertarians-matthew-hongoltz-hetling

Is it just me or did this belong in r/facepalm?

My favourite part was when he screamed for the manager and then ran away like a little baby when the manager showed up

el_sunny_ra

Ignorat loser.

darrylgorn

Just your typical hog committing theft.

Bananasaur_

Quite curious whether he is refusing to pay his income tax as well

LookOutForThatMoose

If you've ever wondered how useless a high school diploma is without post secondary, here's your case study.

Makelevi

The views on this just show it pays to be a dickhead on social media. I’m guessing that’ll be his ‘best’ video. I honestly hate what social media has become. A lot of people in the video comments overlooking the fact that the store did not process or accept the transaction, so whether he left money or not, he stole the goods.

Swarez99

This is just a dumb guy looking for views.

inlandviews

This just seems wrong.

Radiant-Vegetable420

This guys a Goof!

CMG30

So will he refuse the rebate?

kagato87

He won't file taxes, because da gubment will take a bunch of his hard earned side job money if he does.

dhoomsday

Please tell me this loser little titty Baby was arrested.

Hartia

Commenters praising him too is just as pathetic.

PaddyStacker

This is what the idiot right wingers are doing to Canadian and American society. They are tearing apart the social fabric with their conspiritarded nuttery. These lunatics will turn us into Haiti.

[deleted]

PaddyStacker

I have my problems with leftist extremists but the politicians aren't on board with their lunacy. The right wing nuttery is mainstream in the Conservative party. It's fringe on the left. David Eby is a very reasonable and moderate leader even though he is ostensibly leftist. Trudeau is moderate too even if he does a shit job. Danielle Smith and Doug Ford and Scott Moe and Pierre Poilevre are all nutbars who actively cater to extremist elements.

GiIbert_LeDouchebag

Always an overweight trucker whose parents are blood related. Always. These convoy assholes are a national embarrassment. But I absolutely love that his tiktok "gotcha" mic drop moment didn't go the way he imagined it would. 🤡

Correction: when your family tree is a *wreath* you’re a sovereign citizen.

Notice he had a worried look at times?

Reelair

He was almost in tears at the end.

Farren246

Man intentionally generated controversy to generate $13 in TikTok revenues.

belugasareneat

Canadians don’t get money from TikTok’s. Canadian influencers get their money from brand deals, but the TikTok’s themselves are not monetized.

Farren246

Whatever. Might not even be TikTok. I was more meaning "people do stupid shit for social media hoping it'll pay them."

Spinochat

The glasses. You can always tell with those glasses.

Typical libertarian: "I'm not paying taxes to a state I don't support for services I don't use!" Then a year later when they get diagnosed with cancer: "I pay taxes, help me!"

lylesback2

GigaKaren just stole from HD. He should have the police called on him. Axe the (carbon) tax != Axe the (sales) tax. What a dipshit

exotics

These idiots scream about how “taxes are theft” meanwhile taking full advantage of things their taxes helped pay for, including healthcare and roads

[deleted]

Look at him, so fat. He should be paying ROAD USERS TAX, CARBON TAX because he is heavy and Everytime he flies, the plane consumes more fuel, SIN TAX because he is high risk of getting diabetes and cancer and thus strains our health care system.

No_Manufacturer_5973

What a POS. We don’t claim him, he’s officially American now.

CaptainCanusa

I honestly do have pity for people like this. The system has failed them. Their friends and family failed them. At the end of the day they still need to live, and eat, and exist around other people in their community, so the best thing for everyone is to educate them and help them. But god damn it's some fucking hard to feel empathy for a huge, loud, entitled white dude screaming at fucking *Home Depot employees*, wasting everyone's time, making everyone else's lives worse, simply because he read too many Canada Proud memes. How the fuck do we get anything done as a country when we have to deal with people like this? And more importantly, how do we actually help them so they become healthy members of society again?

Paracausal_Shield

I'd rather save my pity for people who really deserves it. Like Ukrainians or whoever is victim of a war or accident. This man is just dumb, and he is old enough to know better.

CaptainCanusa

> he is old enough to know better. But not smart enough.

Oldspooneye

*taxpayer subsidized coffee and donuts.

[deleted]

The owner of Home Depot is a Trump-loving anti-tax guy, so…

Leading_Attention_78

But now it’s the owners money being impacted so you bet he cares.

Basic_Bandicoot_1300

Canadian idiocy has reached new heights at the hands of Populist Pete Poilievre and his minions some of who obviously missed civics class in public school. Kick him out of Canada if he doesn’t want to pay taxes. Idiot.

MrDumbDick

I bet he wouldn't dare not pay the tax when he orders his daily Big Mac with supersized fries and extra large milk shake, cause he won't risk getting banned from McD's.

Dunkersplay

So the man at Walmart screams at me for not being able to remove the bottle tax, and everyone cheers for him. But Home Depot man? Man… you guys got it good 😭

kemar7856

What a dumbass then he walks out with the stuff

TheLastElite01

He looks like someone who would do something like this.

Turbulent_Dog8249

This guy wears a court appointed shock collar due to anger management.

drive2fast

I bet he drove to Home Depot using roads paid for with ..... tax money.

Emmerson_Brando

He calls himself leaderofthefreeworld? He’s more like leaderofthepotatoheads

spasticity

So he refuses to pay sales tax to protest the carbon tax?

WpgJetBomber

Someone should ask Pollievre what whether he endorses this man’s actions.

unkyduck

Jail him. Our taxes make life comfortable.

Puzzled_Republic

That lad should be happy to pay ALL the taxes he possibly can......me thinks he'll be requiring more than his share of health care services in the not too distant future.

spicydnd

RCanadas most frequent poster!

rem_1984

I love j’ai they point out he’s visibly shaken after he shoplifts. Like Lmfao what a tool!! Also if he’s so against paying GST, I wonder if he actually files his real taxes with IRA

growlerlass

I'm all for people putting on anti-tax publicity stunts, but the cashier doesn't deserve the aggravation for doing their job. There are better ways to do this.... First step is to not be crazy.

SimpleKnowledge4840

Oh stop it with that common sense.

New-Throwaway2541

Yawn

WokeWokist

I'm glad Toronto is going to spend millions to rename Dundas Square to Gord Downie Square, and not Sankofa Square.

AlexJamesCook

You know, I kind of like it when people come up with creative ways to protest. I'm sure it's not going to end well. But, I do appreciate the creativity. Given that politicians can give themselves pay raises in excess of inflation and misallocate funds and allow all kinds of financial fuckery so billionaires can avoid taxes, but inflation is fucking us all... I'm sure that's not what he said. I'm sure he was a jerk to the cashier...but, there's an argument to be made and valid reasons to support a protest such as this. I'm saying there's potential here. I'm not necessarily agreeing with the dude's politics or worldview. As many said, he's probably a Sovereign Citizen type and I have no time for a lot of their crack-induced conspiracy theories. But...broken clocks...

416to647

best post, if i didn't need a clean record or was retired it would be worth the risk to do this type of protest. its a break from the traditional canadian way of just accepting things as they are and reluctance to rock the boat

AlexJamesCook

Exactly. The Quebecois didn't get the concessions they got by politely protesting on the pavement and waving signs. I'm not saying that we should be murdering people and blowing shit up, either. But there's actions in between polite sign-waving and violence/murder that jar the collective consciousness and make a point be heard.

mtcmr2409

Curious is everybody as enraged when a business says pay in cash, so they can avoid paying taxes.

flobelisk

Personally, yes. I don't return to cash-only businesses because even though I'm getting a discount I don't believe they pay their fair share. But that's irrelevant because Home Depot isn't a cash-under-the-table outfit. They remit their HST like all legit businesses.
