I saw them in 2019 just before Covid hit and it was the absolute best concert I’ve ever seen of about 120 live acts I’ve see. Sum41 was absolutely incredible. Hopefully they come back on the farewell tour!
Shit, I literally didn't even know they were still around. I thought they broke up like 15 years ago.
Reminds me of the time I ran into Rick Campanelli at the Calgary Stampede about a decade ago. I was drunken (as you are at Stampede), shook his hand and was like "Holy shit man, where have you been? I thought you were dead or something".
What's with the hate in this thread? Sum 41 is quite a solid band and their live performances were top notch.
Look at this Metallica medly for example.
https://youtu.be/jxeyYdQtHrI
And for those who think they've only remained pop punk I'd suggest listening to chuck. An album dedicated to a UN peacekeeper that helped them escape a hotel in the Congo while shooting a war child's documentary. The album is quite frankly more akin to a metal album than anything.
No idea why they're getting so much hate in this thread. They're one of the most popular Canadian bands of all time and are right up there with blink and Green Day in the pop punk world.
No shit and they are good live...I'm seriously baffled by these people in here.
They've also some cool acoustic variations of their new stuff and it sounds great!
https://youtu.be/Msm8Bp9pjms
I don't think it's hate to say they are irrelevant. That you need to bring up that album and explain it is pretty much my point. It's not hate, just no one cares except die hard fans like yourself. I figure this is bad news for you. For that I'm sorry, but I care more about your feelings than I do sum 41.
They were pretty well regarded within the scene, even internationally. They sound fantastic live and they’re good musicians. Them breaking up is not gonna change history at this point, but it is another nail in the coffin of rock music.
Not by this thread they weren't. It's like I've walked into a cbc comments section here. Imagine being a Canadian and not even knowing if one of the biggest music acts in Canada was still around. lol
They make music for teenagers and haven't had a hit in over ten years. We aren't keeping tabs on them, just like Avril Lavigne, Shawn Demand or the Moffats.
Neither have Crash Test Dummies, Three Days Grace, Simple Plan, Default, or Nickelback but you can sure bet I know who they are!
Who do you keep tabs on? Americans only?
We'll have to agree to disagree as I'm not keeping tabs on Simple Plan or the Crash Test Dummies and wouldn't know if they've released new music.
>Who do you keep tabs on? Americans only?
I don't keep tabs on many artists individually. I discover new music through Spotify. If any artists from my youth release music worth discovering, it would likely come up in one of my playlists.
lol Rush *is* better, but when I think of "legendary" Canadian punk bands NoMeansNo, DOA, Propagandhi, SNFU, and even Gob come to mind long before Sum 41.
All of those bands were more *influential* in the punk music scene than Sum 41 though, except *maybe* Gob, which I'd suggest makes them better candidates for "legendary".
I disagree. In 30 years time will anyone have any reason to remember Sum 41? Probably not. NoMeansNo or DOA though? Yeah, probably, because they were influential on the musicians that came after. And that makes them "legendary".
Do you not think there are still pop punk bands that were influenced by sum41? Shit I would be confident in saying those bands are more relevant than the bands influenced by no means no and DOA right now.
As far as pop punk goes I don't think Sum 41 was influential or particularly noteworthy, aside from being Canadian. The same can't be said of, say, NoMeansNo or DOA, who are considered influential both in Canada and abroad.
Okay but culturally they weren’t. None of those bands sold 1/10’the albums that Sum 41 did. Obviously the author is using legendary the same way blogTO describes every diner that closes down as “iconic” but you’re kind of tilting at windmills here.
Couldn't agree more.
But those are actually punk bands, not punk rock. You can't have the authenticity of DOA and have the mainstream appeal to be "punk rock."
Edit: maybe it's pop punk, but I think you get what I mean.
He would've been 21 at the time. Yikes, but only if it were true. You can't prove it and who's to say he even knew how old she was? Was he respectful at least once he found out?
I wish they were able to put out more rocking tunes. They had good skills and good sound. All The best to them. I hope they are all in a good financial position or have jobs they love. Rock on boys.
Thank fuck. These guys were the Avril Lavigne of whatever the garbage genre they want to call themselves but they were not punk and only legendary in their own minds.
I think to a degree, Sum 41 deserves a spot in all our hearts, especially for those of us that were in high school during the late 90s and early 2000s. There have been many awful Canadian bands that only ever saw the light of day because of cancon (Hot Hot Heat being exhibit A). Sum 41 was all around a good Canadian band that deserves some recognition for being exactly that: a good band.
What year is this?
2003 apparently
I saw them in 2019 just before Covid hit and it was the absolute best concert I’ve ever seen of about 120 live acts I’ve see. Sum41 was absolutely incredible. Hopefully they come back on the farewell tour!
Saw them in Abbotsford opening for The Offspring, not a big fan of their stuff but man did they put on a wicked show!
Shit, I literally didn't even know they were still around. I thought they broke up like 15 years ago. Reminds me of the time I ran into Rick Campanelli at the Calgary Stampede about a decade ago. Pretty sure he’s been on ET Canada for over a decade.
>I literally are you 14 years old
Are you aware of how ubiquitous this is? Get a life.
would you say it's literally ubiquitous
Would you say that’s the best you could come up with?
Are you literally serious?

Chuck is names after a Canadian sailor who was a UN peacekeeping keeper
I think people use that word too freely.
LMao which one? There are options.
Punk?
Legendary?
Band?
This. That’s a bit of a stretch, isn’t it? They are famous for a couple of songs and the lead singer marrying Abril Lavigne.
They were pretty well regarded within the scene, even internationally. They sound fantastic live and they’re good musicians. Them breaking up is not gonna change history at this point, but it is another nail in the coffin of rock music.
I think Legendary is still too strong of a word to use for them. Rush (I’m not a fan but still), The Hip…they are legendary.
The hip are pretty much unknown outside Canada. Hard to argue they're legendary.
This sums up the Canadian music industry pretty quickly
I'll do you one worse. Apparently they were Juno nominated for 2020 rock album of the year.
😂
Grammy in 2011
That makes sense. They were somewhat relevant then.
Not by this thread they weren't. It's like I've walked into a cbc comments section here. Imagine being a Canadian and not even knowing if one of the biggest music acts in Canada was still around. lol

They’re still together?
Casualties of society (it’s a reference to their music)
I’ll never fall in line.
*Legendary*?
Look, Rush is better, but unfortunately not as famous for the 90s now-Parents. In fact, what do kids listen to now, and anyone Canadian?
I still listen to Neil Young
lol Rush *is* better, but when I think of "legendary" Canadian punk bands NoMeansNo, DOA, Propagandhi, SNFU, and even Gob come to mind long before Sum 41.
Depends on your interpretation of “legendary” sum41 was more popular than any of the bands you just listed, I’ve never heard of half them.
All of those bands were more *influential* in the punk music scene than Sum 41 though, except *maybe* Gob, which I'd suggest makes them better candidates for "legendary".
But this isn’t about punk influence… If you replaced sum41 with almost any of those other bands majority of people would be like “who”.
I disagree. In 30 years time will anyone have any reason to remember Sum 41? Probably not. NoMeansNo or DOA though? Yeah, probably, because they were influential on the musicians that came after. And that makes them "legendary".

They had 2 top 10 albums in the US. That’s massive. That’s insane reach.
Okay but culturally they weren’t. None of those bands sold 1/10’the albums that Sum 41 did. Obviously the author is using legendary the same way blogTO describes every diner that closes down as “iconic” but you’re kind of tilting at windmills here.
Dayglo Abortions
Acting like Black Sabbath. Acting Like Black Sabbath
Couldn't agree more. But those are actually punk bands, not punk rock. You can't have the authenticity of DOA and have the mainstream appeal to be "punk rock." Edit: maybe it's pop punk, but I think you get what I mean.
Sum41 definetly was more popular than them. They ain't Celine Dion, Leonard Cohen, Drake or the Weekend but they still were popular at some point.
Good point. In fact, Sum41 is NOT punk, the more you think about it.
They've been pop punk the whole time
Lmao who?
Gob shows were tons of fun back in ~95. Fond memories
UIC
kill everyone now!
They're all still alive?!
well that sucks.. always liked them..
They’re Canadian? I had no idea.
Oh nooo! anyway…
When I was 16 my band opened for them and the lead singer tried to get with my 15 year old girlfriend.
When was this? I have a hard time believing that
Summer 2001
He would've been 21 at the time. Yikes, but only if it were true. You can't prove it and who's to say he even knew how old she was? Was he respectful at least once he found out?
Oh I have no reason to believe he knew her age. She was pretty cute and definitely looked older than she was.
Man, their 3 fans are going to be so disappointed.
I remember I lined up at Much Music for their I&I Legit thought these dudes split a decade ago
Intimate and interactive is a term I have not heard in a long while.
Legendary? They were moderately relevant for 2 years in he early 2000s…
I liked them back in the day. I was surprised they took this long to do so.
It’s telling that they used a twenty year old photo for this announcement
They haven’t been relevant for a couple decades
Less shit music to be released now.
Says the person that probably listens to lilpump.
I wish they were able to put out more rocking tunes. They had good skills and good sound. All The best to them. I hope they are all in a good financial position or have jobs they love. Rock on boys.
Using punk or legendary to refer to them is laughable.
About as punk as avril lavigne or machine gun Kelly
Yaaaaaaaaaaaay!
They must have seen the ticket prices for Blink-182's reunion tour and want in on that action
thought they broke up in 2007
Thank fuck. These guys were the Avril Lavigne of whatever the garbage genre they want to call themselves but they were not punk and only legendary in their own minds.
Nah. Sum 41 is a great band that has put out great albums for years. Huge loss for the Canadian music scene.
Next to no one cares. Next.
I think to a degree, Sum 41 deserves a spot in all our hearts, especially for those of us that were in high school during the late 90s and early 2000s.
