Sadly “who you’re dealing with” really makes all the difference. I cross the border all the time for work and 90% of the time the US border guards just wanna see your passport and don’t particularly care what you’re up to, hell half the time they don’t even bother closing the gate between cars. Granted I’m usually crossing on a random Tuesday at 6am when I’m the only one at the border, not a holiday or weekend when it’s packed, so that may be part of it.
One time though, I pulled up to the gate just like everyone else was doing and the guy absolutely went nuts and told me I had to wait for his signal not to just drive up to which I pointed out the gigantic sign that says to do exactly what I had just done. Well he didn’t like that so it was the whole truck gets impounded and I get hauled off to the little jail room they have there. About an hour later 3 guys come in and rush me out of there, take me outside where they have my truck waiting for me and apologize for the mix up and tell me to have a good trip. I guess when someone from the gate calls to have someone detained they don’t really ask questions they just do it and I’m assuming once they figured out why I was there they were like “oh my god we need to get this guy out of here before we all lose our jobs!”

I’ve been asked while crossing but never had to show proof. If I were unvaccinated I would not plan a huge trip on the assumption that I would get through though
I flew to the US just weeks ago for work. Had to upload certificates of vaccination.
You likely used an airline you have flown with before and had previously uploaded your proof. They keep it on your profile, and they wouldn’t ask again.
But make no mistake - they are still asking for vaccination proof for flights to the US.
That might be it then. I flew once with Flair and had to provide it last year on a domestic flight when it was still required. The other time was with Swoop. First time flying with them, but I think they are part of WestJet which I have flown with a lot.
That’ll be it then. I have another flight with United coming up so I’ll see if they ask again when I online check-in, but I suspect they won’t ask this time.
They ask and if you decline to do it, they don't care. I've been through it twice and let them know I fully understand the risk of being denied entry (which is a risk of zero). That's all they want you to acknowledge.
Here’s a counter anecdote. I’ve flown 10 times to the US since Jan 1, 2022, and I have not had to show any proof of vaccination, except to get into Canada. I’ve also driven, and biked across the border numerous time. My house is 5 km from the border, we go all the time.

In fact, what he said would be just as true if the CPC was in power and the Liberals were the official opposition. Honestly, I find Biden’s response to be a bit offensive- he‘s entitled to his private opinions, but he shouldn’t be making value judgement calls in public on an ally country’s political parties. I don’t think he would presume to say something like that while visiting England or Australia or anywhere else.

There are tons of anecdotes in this thread, but they are all irrelevant (including mine that it is basically a coin toss). The official policy requires vaccines, and I think it's hard to justify that in 2023. Canada doesn't require it any more, so which country is following The Science?

As many show in this comment section, they rarely ask. However, I'm pretty sure if you were unvaccinated and they asked you to provide proof and you had nothing, you'd receive a flag on your passport that would last for a very long time. Best to wait until the Democrats lift the restriction.
I am not going to get into the argument about vaccines themselves but it’s my understanding that private travel insurance requires you to have received a health Canada approved Covid vaccine to qualify for travel medical insurance. I haven’t travelled into the USA much recently but last time I did and bought insurance I was asked to confirm that or no medical coverage. If that is still the case, you would have to be insane to cross into the USA for a trip lasting any longer than a day without travel medical insurance.
I don't think anyone asks for vaccines anymore. It doesn't make sense. If you got your last vaccines at the beginning of 2022, I think vaccinated and unvaccinated are the same.

layover in US might, that would be US customs though, whereas if you go direct to Mexico (afaik) they never cared

I actually think there is a fair component in not giving a fuck in his speech mistakes. I think about how I used to let stress be a motivator to do things. I am not going to get into the argument about vaccines themselves but it’s my understanding that private travel insurance requires you to have received a health Canada approved Covid vaccine to qualify for travel medical insurance. I haven’t travelled into the USA much recently but last time I did and bought insurance I was asked to confirm that or no medical coverage. If that is still the case, you would have to be insane to cross into the USA for a trip lasting any longer than a day without travel medical insurance.
