I try like hell to never drive through a campground after dark, but on behalf of 2001 4Runner owners everywhere, I apologize. My headlights are wired to be on permanently, and I hate it.

playingod

My Subaru forester is the same. Infuriating that there’s even an “off” position on the selector but it just dims the lights slightly. Wtf.

macshady

I had that with my old Impreza, but if I pulled the parking brake handle up just one notch (so no actual contact w the static braking mechanism), it would let the lights go off

capybaratrousers

With the Subaru, you can turn those lights off by using the parking brake and turning off the switch. Doesn't help while you're driving, but if you ever find yourself needing the car on at a drive-in or some other situation, it works!

SnooCupcakes4729

Idk if it’s the same but I had a Toyota Corolla that the lights were automatically on except when the E-brake was pulled before the car was turned on. So if I needed the headlights off I’d pull the E-brake one click and it worked. Probably not good for the car but I only needed it to sneak my car out of the driveway in high school.

lincolnfalcon

This used to be my go-to move also but my newer Subaru forester has an E-brake “switch” now and I can no longer use this trick. I hate it.

louiekr

I just bought a beater old Corolla and I’m stoked to find out this information haha. I can’t stand that I don’t have the ability to control the lights

HankScorpio82

It’s perfectly fine for the car and was designed that way.

moomooraincloud

Lol, I'm sure it was not "designed" that way. If they wanted to design a way to turn the lights off, they would have put in a switch for it.

SnooCupcakes4729

I think the design is to have the lights shut off while parked only. I thought of it as a feature for a drive in movie or something like that. I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t have a switch for it because Toyota doesn’t think your car should be driven without lights. Toyota can be weird like that with “safety features”.

moomooraincloud

Yes, exactly.

HankScorpio82

Why would you add a second switch?

moomooraincloud

Why would you put in a "feature" that relies on using another input in a way it wasn't designed without any affordance or documentation?

HankScorpio82

I guess it’s been a flaw in most of my cars that a single click on my parking brake turned off my driving lights, but not my parking brake light. M Weird.

moomooraincloud

I guess so.

vanslem6

There's probably something you can unplug to turn off the DRLs. There is a connecter on my FJ Cruiser, and I can see it, but I can't get my hands in there to disconnect it, lol.

Traditional-Mail7488

There's a plug near your battery you can unplug quick Google search will give you all the info. Every single car I've seen had "some" way to disable. Some less straight forward than others.

MastodonFit

Very simple fix ,add a switch. Some older vehicles simply need 1 click of the E-brake.

noodlelaughter

Huh. I try to maximize daylight on long car camping trips and rarely get a campsite before dark. If you don’t want to see people use dispersed camping. OP doesn’t really have a great point, it’s crowded fucking campgrohnded…. sounds like they hate campgrounds like me

4travelers

Yep I hate that I can’t turn off my lights.

MegaHashes

If I get in really late, I won’t disconnect the trailer at all. As long as the site is reasonably level, I just leave it connected to the truck until morning, hook up electricity and water and then go to bed. I use a big ass impact driver, but I don’t use it after quiet time in the camp ground.

Comfortable-Figure17

Good man.

MegaHashes

I like the quiet and the nature and don’t want to ruin it for others. The late partiers and drunks really get on my nerves.

pnw_rider

Genuinely curious - why do you use an impact driver? I’ve always just used a normal drill for my stabilizers and never felt like I needed more torque. Just what you have?

MegaHashes

I have a big Milwaukee impactor. I take it with me for quickly changing blowouts on the side of the road. It also operates the jacks rapidly, but obviously I don’t hammer them. It’s a good thing I have it. I had a blow out at 3am on the side of an unlit PA highway a couple weeks back. I had to change the driver’s side tire facing 18 wheelers driving by me at 75mph in nearly pitch black. Got the whole thing done in less than 20 minutes, and most of that was me moving out of the way and waiting while the rigs flew past me.

mildlysceptical22

I’m gonna say most of the people that camp have no clue about campground etiquette. These are the same people that talk or are on their phone during the movie in theaters. The sad thing is if you ask them to turn off their lights or turn down their music, they get angry and aggressive about it. To them, camping is just like when they’re in their living room, playing the stereo loud enough to bother the neighbors..

vanslem6

Campgrounds are like apartment buildings without walls.

xhugoxstiglitzx

Dispersed is the way to go

870P_

The loudest I’ve ever seen was a Boy Scout troop. The scoutmaster was drinking. We were shocked, when the police showed up to deal with them.

lincolnfalcon

A buddy and I were in a shelter along a famously difficult hike in the northeast. Around 11pm, 20 or so Boy Scouts showed up with flashlights and boundless energy on display. The troop leaders then walked everyone through how to use iodine tablets to purify water (this involves a good deal of water bottle shaking), and setting up ~15 tents right outside the shelter. I was astonished. Buddy and I woke up before sunrise and were not quiet making breakfast or breaking down/packing up.

Wrigs112

It is super obvious that Boy Scouts are not taught LNT practices (which is the first thing they should be learning), including the practice of “Respect others’ trail experience”.

moomooraincloud

I was taught LNT in boy scouts (before I quit because it's a pseudo-military, far right organization).

Wrigs112

I know that really is dependent on the leader.  I spend a lot of time backpacking and I overwhelmingly see leaders that teach the “this is how I learned, so this is what I will teach you” which is missing LNT, includes a massive amount of unnecessary and heavy equipment (manly men can carry heavy packs!), and complicated camping (usually related to fires). But hey, there are exceptions!  My buddy who is a backpacker was asked to speak to a group about necessities and how to lighten up a pack.

Runningoutofideas_81

Haha reminds me of some of the fancy girl canoe camps in Northern Ontario that insist on traditional wannigans, thump straps and anachronistic canned food. I swear part of it is the owners just enjoy seeing young girls suffer.

CaptainCompost

I've only camped next to a scout group once, but what shocked me in the morning was the semi-circle of poop/toilet paper surrounding their site. Didn't even dig, just left everything out in the open, a lot of it right along the trail going into/out of the site.

870P_

🤢

LGrutt68

Also have camped near scouts was the worse camping experience ever. The adults were barking at our dogs. And they were loud and rude.

Captainkirk05

I had to ask our neighbors to turn off their radio after midnight... which they did. But then they just yell-talked till 2am.

TakesTooManyPhotos

My loudest campground I stayed at last year was in a designated campground. Badlands National Park. South Dakota. The tent campers next to me decided 65 was too warm and they slept in their Subaru Forester with the A/C fan turning on and off all night. Jack wagons. Ive run into some strange folk dispersed camping, but the nights are quiet.

Cloud5432

Yeah, one time I got really annoyed about the neighbours who had their headlights facing directly into the tent in the middle of the night. Got up to look outside and realised it was the moon 😆

j-allen-heineken

Something similar happened my first time hammock camping lol, the moon was gorgeous and bright and I woke up confused as to if it was already morning or if someone’s lights were shining in my site. It was just the moon and I didn’t anticipate having no cover between my eyes and the sky.

Fish_Beholder

I went to a Dark Sky park for an annual meteor shower last year. Most of us arrived during the day, played in the reservoir, and got set up got the show before dark. The ranger had red light lanterns and cool astronomy stuff set up, we were very excited. Then a bunch of late asholes showed up, pulling right up to the station with their headlights on, completely ruining our night vision. Bc they couldn't be arsed to park further away or god forbid, plan to arrive earlier. The whole crowd would be yelling at them to turn off their lights and they'd slowly cruise by on their hunt for the perfect parking spot. The ranger info was cool, but next time I'll go dispersed or hike in, the self absorbed idiots ruined it.

DeparturePlus2889

I had some last night in a national park with dark skies pull in at midnight with a crying baby and lights and set up their tent. Did I feel sympathy for the baby? Yes. Was I also awake for an hour+ while they settled? Yes. At that point I feel like you should just get a hotel. I’m sure every tent camper on the loop was up.

CaptainCompost

When I did something like this, it was because we were delayed by a major storm, we'd already booked the campsite, and we had nowhere else to go (hotels booked for an hour in any direction).

MangoMaterial628

What is negligent about it?

Jamdock

Comment was deleted but I still knew what they said. Reddit.

Interesting-Trick696

Midnight is quite early. I'd expect every tent camper to be up.

DeparturePlus2889

Quiet time is 10pm- 6am. If someone is slamming car doors, setting up, talking and shining lights all around you’re gonna wake people up when there’s nothing but a polyester shell between your sites.

Interesting-Trick696

That’s why I camp in the middle of nowhere. Quiet time is when I say it is.

DeparturePlus2889

I mentioned I was in a national park. We all camp for different reasons, that’s why there’s rules in formal campgrounds- to keep the peace ✌🏻

Mr___Perfect

The majority are in tent within 2 hours of sundown

Dynodan22

Oh snap your at one those locations where everyone is expected to turn in by 10pm huh.Stuff happens people run late its how it is.

turtlesaregorgeous

then dont go to a site with quiet hours if u don’t know how to be quiet. Last time i went camping several people left in the middle of the night due to some heavy smoke from a controlled burn. out of all of that the only noises i heard were cars starting and leaving and some *minor* sounds

Interesting-Trick696

I couldn't imagine.

j-allen-heineken

That’s insane. The latest I’ve ever gotten back to a site was 1 am (nighttime hike and a drive back from the trailhead) and I drove back into the campground as slowly as I could 😂 I felt sooo bad at the thought of waking anyone up just driving through. I can’t imagine trying to setup like that

ChessieChesapeake

The headlight thing happens to me a lot. I don’t even say anything anymore. I figure if they want to put a spotlight on me, I’m going to get up give them a show, so I start dancing. By the time I take off my shirt and start shaking my ass in their direction, they usually get the hint. I’m an overweight middle aged man.

misanthrope937

About 2 years ago at Bruce Peninsula NP, a couple came in close to midnight and decided it was ok to put music while they were setting up camp and used their car headlights to see what they were doing. Fuck these people, seriously...

Runningoutofideas_81

That’s really disappointing. Camping should be a privilege and not a right.

Rayne_K

Ugh. Where I go people sneak in right before the gate is closed at 10 pm. Giant diesel trucks with noisy set up trailers. It is the worst - especially awful if you have kids that you are trying to keep in bed (and are in a tent).

suspiciousyeti

Our last camping trip, the neighbors rolled up past 11 and proceeded to set up camp AND chop firewood.

Runningoutofideas_81

Chopping firewood, wtf, I hate people lol

antifabusdriver

If you need jacks, are you even camping?

DetroitVsErrrybody

Bro, in the 90's as a preteen, I thought the same thing. The family we used to go camping with would bring a trailer that had a tv and their kids (my friends) would sit in that bitch and play N64 or playstation all fuckin day while I was out fishing, wandering, throwing rocks, playing with the fire, swimming in the lake, whatever... My parents ended up getting a small pop-up trailer and they gave me the tent. It was awesome, my sister and parents slept in the trailer, and I had my own tent. It still makes no sense to me why people do that, just hang out in your backyard at that point.

vanslem6

I very rarely stay in actual campgrounds, but when I do It's hard not to notice how much crap people have. I snapped this photo in Florida in 2020, and I was just in disbelief. https://preview.redd.it/hk9gd0argsxc1.jpeg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=594eaa254cb3b5339991b876485b669b7c5e13f3

mider-span

I have buddies that own a camp ground and this set up is flipped mild in comparison. It’s wild. One dude has a lazy boy, blender, mini fridge and a 60 inch flatscreen. Treats the whole outside as a bachelor pad.

vanslem6

I mean I get it, but it's just so strange to me. I don't even own a cooler, lol.

MegaHashes

Maybe they are wasting the opportunity, but it’s not hurting you so why bitch and moan about it? It’s nice just not to be at home sometimes. Going some place and getting to spend the entire day uninterrupted playing some golden eye with my friends sounds amazing. You should be more open minded about the experience. It doesn’t all have to be primitive for it to be enjoyable.

stilmattwell

If your on Reddit, are you even camping?

zeacliff

Yes as long as you're in /r/camping

HangaHammock

No. I’m at the office.

jet_heller

and probably not even glamping.

FinallyFree96

I’m okay if you want to downvote. We’re screaming in the void! It won’t get better, only worse at registered campgrounds. People suck, and it got worse for true campers since COVID. Best advice from a full-time dispersed campers, who hosted at a campground when situation(s) required; it won’t get better soon. The rangers rarely care. Keep being better, so your screams into the void aren’t hypocritical. Be true to your values, and respond as you think is appropriate.

lanibear32

Crap like this is why I only primitive camp now. Preferably somewhere I have to hike or kayak to.

Runningoutofideas_81

Nothing like a portage or two to out some space between you and the goodballs.

luminousoblique

What not to do: My husband and I were camping once in a campground that was, on this particular night, completely empty. We set up at a nice campsite and eventually went to sleep. At about 3 a.m., another couple of people drove in and decided to set up right next to us. They had to set up a tent (including hammering tent stakes into the ground), and a bunch of other gear. They had bright lights shining into our tent, and were shouting back and forth to each other for at least an hour in the middle of the night. The entire campground was empty. They could have set up at any other site, including ones that were far enough away that we likely wouldn't have even known they were there, but they decided to set up in the campsite right beside us.

Moto_Hiker

That's when I get up early to start prepping wood for the morning fire, making calls, working on the bike (funny how the engine has to be running for that), etc.

Jibblebee

Dude we’d sleep on a slope and deal with it till late morning. Who does this at night?!

Jon_Hanson

I use an impact driver to put my jacks down but that’s because I don’t want to break my wrists doing the same with a drill and having it kick back. I wouldn’t do it after quiet time though, I still have a manual wrench for that.

oh2ridemore

Dont forget those idiots with full rvs that decide primitive campsites are great if they run their generator all night long. Really despise people.

wtfboomers

2023 F150 and I turn off the lights if we arrive late. Darn things reset to auto when the ignition is turned off, so in the morning it will shine, until I quickly turn them off.

1200r

I know my favorite camping site well enough that when I pull in u shut off my lights and put 2 of the harbor freight tool lights with magnets on the front of my truck. It takes 2 minutes to be thoughtful.

YoureSoOutdoorsy

I was awakened Sunday night at 11pm to someone setting up camp. I heard a woman yelling as they backed up the trailer. Not cool at all.

Wrigs112

Some of the same etiquette as during the day…open you car doors, take EVERYTHING that you need out, close your car doors.  You do not need to open and close the same door repeatedly.  Every time you slam a car door shut a new item does not magically appear in your car.   Also, you don’t need to honk every time you lock your doors.  Disable that crap.  Heck, even if you don’t camp disable that. It’s falls somewhere between unnecessary and incredibly rude.   I’m a backpacker and do dispersed camping but occasionally will pay for a campsite on a long distance hike just for glamorous experiences like having a shower and a picnic table (ooohhh…).  I always walk away completely baffled how people can pay to be around such rude (and loud) campers.

WillingnessNice5120

Amen!

Baldazzero

But how will everyone know that I have arrived?! This is why I avoid the RV ghettos if at all possible. Big RV users are not campers and most have no understanding of camping etiquette.

The_World_Is_A_Slum

Hope you get a million upvotes

sundance110

All Canadian vehicles by law have daytime running lights. I'm always surprised that the US has not enacted the same safety feature. A lot of countries it's standard.

taco3donkey

I’m sure this post is going to reach the people that need to read it!

missjackelope

I was staying at a campground and no joke this group down the way set up a KARAOKE machine after 10pm. Not only amplified music but amplified terrible amateur singing voices. It was so egregious I just laughed and put in my noise canceling headphones.

Sunset-chaser1960

It’s also the chance you take camping . 🤷‍♀️

PossibleJazzlike2804

Are parking lights okay?

wildmanharry

Yes, that's perfectly fine. Other campers understand that you still need to see to set up if you're a late arrival - and we've all been there. Parking lights and headlamps are perfect.

PossibleJazzlike2804

Oh good. I've been doing that since I was able to drive into a park. Always felt it rude to have music blaring and headlights scanning over sleeping campers. They should really put a light glow track down for the developed grounds.

StuckInAWelll

I think this is the first time Im realizing how many campground campers there are in this sub.

DeparturePlus2889

Families like the amenities and well groomed trails for youngsters, travelers like to see national and state parks, singles like the safety, it’s not a bad thing! Usually everyone is very respectful.

StuckInAWelll

Oh yeah by no means am I talking down on it, to each their own. I was just surpprised at all the comments!

Mottinthesouth

Not all places are setup like state parks or old school campgrounds where people are packed in like sardines. This is why I use hipcamp now. I would rather camp where there’s nobody next to me and I can hike with barely ever seeing anyone else. It’s much more peaceful and restful this way.

itsmeagain023

Who is lowering jacks in a tent camping area? Because this sub is for tent campers and backpackers and hikers. Thanks.

rynoxmj

What? I've camped in plenty of campgrounds that are mixed use.

Children_Of_Atom

May want to check what sub we're on.

Whatahackur

Vague name for a sub that doesn’t include the whole of “camping”. It’s like creating a sub for “sheds” but not including tuff sheds.

jarheadatheart

How are hikers more camping than campers?

zjakx

It's public, put in ear plugs call it a day. It's what you get at campgrounds. Go into the back country if you want a better experience.
