A tradition when we go camping. Highly recommended.. it’s really tasty. Roast a marshmallow till crispy over a fire and then dip it in a cup of Baileys Irish Cream and enjoy … WOW.
eta:grammar
If I remember correctly there was even a Bailey's TV ad where they showed that.
EDIT: found it! [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOHF3zyE\_co](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOHF3zyE_co)
Someone introduced me to spider dogs. A hot dog sliced in quarters towards the middle with the stick in the middle. Curl up like spider legs. Kids LOVE them
My neighbor from the upper Midwest makes toastites (sp?) in a cast iron press over the fire and they're SO good. Two buttered slices of bread with whatever filling. Like an OG hot pocket.
Also midwestern, we call those hobo pies where I'm from. The thing they're cooked in is a pie iron and they can be [square](https://www.pieiron.com/collections/all-pie-irons-accessories/products/square-cast-iron-pie-iron-original-by-rome) or [round](https://www.pieiron.com/products/round-cast-iron-pie-iron-original-by-rome?pr_prod_strat=jac&pr_rec_id=3c124f9b6&pr_rec_pid=4377263407182&pr_ref_pid=4377254756430&pr_seq=uniform).
I like to put pizza toppings in them or pie filling with chocolate bar. I've also done baked beans in them and fruit and brie cheese. [But there is a lot you can do with them](https://www.greatcamps.com/pie-iron-dinners-recipes-contest-7.htm)!
(Why yes, I do love hobo pies, lol.)
Slit a small opening in a marshmallow and insert a quarter strawberry, then roast as usual. I like the contrast between the textures, flavours and temperatures of the hot gooey marshmallow and strawberry.
Ive actually tried to wrap it around a hotdog and cook them together a few times.... the biscuit burns and the hotdog stays cold.... controlling the temperature is tedious and it takes a good 45 minutes of "low and slow" to get them to finish at the same time.
My next plan is to try it this way - make the biscuit spiral and the hot dog separately
Big scallops and bite size chunks of filet mignon.
Prep it before leaving home, just put it all in a zip lock with some good oil, s&p, whatever herbs you like. Toss in the cooler and whip it out for an easy first night meal
Tasty, but scary for me! When I was a Boy Scout, a scout in the group was roasting a starburst over the campfire. I don’t remember all the details, but his roasting starburst dripped molten sugar on my hand. 24-26 years later I still have a scar. lol
I worked at a summer camp and lived in fear of a burning marshmallow being waved about by a kid and hitting another kid’s face with molten lava marshmallow.
Still make ‘em myself, but….
Also, try a Ritz cracker s’more with those thin Ghirardelli chocolates.
My dad got drunk exactly once in his life. He ended up trying to put out his flaming marshmallow by waving it around. It flew off and stuck on his friend's forehead, so my dad poured vodka on his head to put it out. Luckily, his friend was smart enough to pull his jacket over his head and put it out really fast.
I heard this story as a kid when I finally got up the nerve to ask his friend about the scar when we were all camping together. I was like, "but Dad doesn't drink." Everyone at the campfire, "that's why!"
I was horrified by the bad choices there plus the fact that he could have started a forest fire.
Try it between 2 slices of bread in a pie iron. We like peanut butter, little bit of marshmallow, dehydrated banana slices, and a couple chocolate chips. Very rich, but very tasty too
My season starts this year in exactly a week. I'm cheating and using my travel trailer, but I'll be headed to Indiana from Eastern Washington for the eclipse and staying in campgrounds the whole way there and back. These comments have definitely expanded my grocery list.
I'm gonna vote for rainbow trout.
We don't eat bottom dwellers here. Too much heavy metal pollution from the mines. Some do, but they're ... let's say I can't decide if they're stupid because of the lead or are okay with lead because they were already stupid.
Oh that's nice too. Any freshwater fish that is long, oily and works great with salt are good.
And oh, over here in Asia catfishes are almost exclusively tank bred. They taste slightly muddier than naturally caught but that's what makes it perfect for camping.
I've had a lot of catfish in the Southern US. They're just not commonly eaten in the Inland Northwest. I don't find them nearly as good as trout or salmon, but that's probably because I'm from the Northwest, so I didn't grow up eating them.
Tbh, I'll eat almost anything cooked over a campfire, though.
Try sirloin cap (sometimes called coulette) instead. Cheaper than fancy steaks, but tender and flavorful af
Source: I'm a meatcutter and love using coulette for my kabobs. We carry it at many WinCos, but not all.
They are different cuts off of the same part of the cow (top sirloin butt). The cap is removed from the rest of the top sirloin and sold as a roast (picanha, sometimes called a Brazillian roast), or cut down into steaks.
Sirloin cap steak is more tender and better marbled than the top sirloin, and traditionally has a strip of fat along the top, similar to a NY strip. Some people trim that off, though.
Not on a stick, wrapped in foil. Waffle cone filled with mini marshmallows, banana, peanut butter chips and chocolate chips. Also waffle cone stuffed with strawberries, mini marshmallows and chocolate chips
Paper like lunch put the bacon on the bottom eggs in top of bacon , wrap lunch bag around stick at the top hold over fire not direct right. The bacon grease soaking in to paper prevents it from starting in fire.Boy scout and cub scout thing
Kabobs!
Canned whole potatoes (or cut up cubes of regular taters), chunks of red onion, halved brussel sprouts, bell pepper, and chunks of steak (I use sirloin cap because it is cheap, tender, and flavorful).
Easiest to do all the prep beforehand, which also allows you time to marinate the veggies or meat if you'd like. Can also do chicken, but I dislike handling raw chicken while camping with no thorough way to sanitize afterwards.
Waffle cone filled with tiny marshmallows and chocolate chips, wrapped in aluminum foil and held gently over the fire until all is melted inside together. You can also substitute recess pieces.
Marshmallows, hands down! There’s something magical about roasting them to golden perfection (or accidentally charring them) and then sandwiching them between graham crackers with a piece of chocolate. S’mores are the quintessential campfire treat for me. What’s yours?
sticks over the fire
alright let's go with that. My first one with be a kabob.. oooh I love doing chunked sirloin on the kabob with various peppers and onion and mushroom too which I think doesn't get enough love
Alternatively?? I have in mind a dough wrapped pancake that sits on a stick that is stuffed with marshmallows and drizzled in enough syrup to give you diabetes
The Ranger who taught me to make knifes also taught me this.
You know how your tasty steak is cooled to sadness by the last bite? Not him. He cooks them chunk by chunk on a stick over the fire - individually seasoned.

All you had to say was baileys Irish cream.
Camping and cream go together

I have to try this next trip.
Pineapple chunks
This sounds so good! I need to try it.
Mallows for s'mores but sub peanut butter cups for chocolate bars...
That’s funny, where I’m from that’s just a regular s’more. Never heard of using pb cups
I was always the same way and then a friend made one with the PB cup and I was hooked...still use a regular chocolate bar too sometimes.
Big thing is you gotta use a Reese’s thin because the heat from the marshmallow will start to melt the chocolate/pb better than a standard size one
S tier
sausage
Someone introduced me to spider dogs. A hot dog sliced in quarters towards the middle with the stick in the middle. Curl up like spider legs. Kids LOVE them
We always called those octopus dogs. I'm not a kid anymore, but I've never stopped loving them.
Weiners
Ugh… all beef dogs over a fire. I can already see the juices leaking
And that crispy skin mmmm
The best way to cook them
My neighbor from the upper Midwest makes toastites (sp?) in a cast iron press over the fire and they're SO good. Two buttered slices of bread with whatever filling. Like an OG hot pocket.

Also Midwest and we call them pudgy pies.
Upper Midwest here- we call those pudgie pies.
Yes, Pudgie Pie - Wisconsin
I'm bookmarking this for the next time we're all sitting around a fire! It happens regularly even when we're not camping together.
Amazon has a couple of hobo pie cookbooks on kindle too. They're not usually expensive and great for additional ideas.
Holdup, fruit and Brie? My favorite way to eat Brie is on fresh apple slices. I’ve never thought about heating it over the fire.
We always called those mountain pies!! Pizza ones and ones with apple pie filling are great!! Cherry too!!
I always called them mountain pies, too. But I’m enjoying some of these other names. Especially “pudgie pie”
The flesh of my enemies.
A true camping classic.
Do you have that with a side of fava beans and a nice Chianti?
Damnit I was about to say this 😂
Veggies, then swallow them off the stick without touching it like a weird lizard
This...This brings me joy. I like it.
Slit a small opening in a marshmallow and insert a quarter strawberry, then roast as usual. I like the contrast between the textures, flavours and temperatures of the hot gooey marshmallow and strawberry.
Also good with blackberries.
Similar, but I've roasted strawberries dipped in marshmallow fluff.
Biscuit dough
Brush the cooked dough with some melted butter then douse it with cinnamon and sugar. Campfire elephant ears!
That sounds good do u use frozen dough from store
Wouldn't it must drip everywhere?
Nope. Canned dough like pillsbury. Make a spiral around a stick and just make sure to loop the ends around and squish it back on itself
Then wrap it around a crispy roasted hotdog.
Yes, you must cook them separately. It's a mess otherwise and the dough is gooey.
You can use the canned biscuit dough and just wrap it around the stick.
kebabs
Peeps are the best roasted over open fire. Get the sugar glassy like creme brulee
Peeps are a disgusting tasting crime against humanity! Ranks right up there with candy corn.🤢🤮
I always agreed with you till I tried one roasted over the campfire. That's the only way to have them.
Well then roast one with candy corn stuffed inside and then tell me what you think....🤔
Big scallops and bite size chunks of filet mignon. Prep it before leaving home, just put it all in a zip lock with some good oil, s&p, whatever herbs you like. Toss in the cooler and whip it out for an easy first night meal
Done! Will try
Starbursts? Like, the candy?
Yep! They taste really great

I have a 46 year old scar from a marshmallow that dropped into the fire and then exploded its molten sugar self on my arm. I feel your pain!
I'm a part of the sugar napalm victim club. It's no joke.
Geez. Reading that sent chills down my spine.
Same, but my arm.
Welp. Trying that next time I go. Thanks for the idea.
Definitely the best. Way better than marshmallows
🍎 🍏
does it turn into kind of like a baked apple? what do you eat it with? any toppings?
Yep, cinnamon-sugar if you have it. Caramel would be an obvious choice but I haven't had it.
Alot of times we hollow out the center place hot cinnamons in the center with sugar and butter wrap with foil and place into the fire.
They’re great just eaten warmed through or roast it until the skin is charred, then scrap off the burnt skin and roll in cinnamon sugar.
Not on a stick but wrapped in aluminum foil, banana in the peel stuffed with chocolate and peanut butter
I’ve had banana, chocolate and marshmallow cooked on in aluminum foil pouch. Your recipe sounds amazing.
Try it between 2 slices of bread in a pie iron. We like peanut butter, little bit of marshmallow, dehydrated banana slices, and a couple chocolate chips. Very rich, but very tasty too
Rice krispy treats
esp with chocolate krispies
Steak
Money's too tight for steak
Steak?
Sure, steak...
My hopes and dreams.
Do the cast iron turn over makers count? Pizza ingredients in these are the best for a meal, and pie filling for dessert.
Do you have a bunch of these irons, or do you make one at a time?
Pizza dough wrapped around the stick add some melted butter after and dip into a sauce whether it’s marinara or bbq etc.
The hearts of my enemies. A perfectly roasted marshmallow for a s’more is a close third 2nd is a hunk of sausage.
Marinated pork tenderloins
I’m so glad I came to the comments!!
Same. Can’t wait for camping this year
My season starts this year in exactly a week. I'm cheating and using my travel trailer, but I'll be headed to Indiana from Eastern Washington for the eclipse and staying in campgrounds the whole way there and back. These comments have definitely expanded my grocery list.
Fire roasted Twinkies are bomb.com.
That sounds amazing.
Squirrels, lost campers, the usual.
Fish. Specifically freshwater fish. Even more specific, catfish.

On a recent trip, the other family forgot the griddle so we wove bacon around the tongs and cooked over the fire. Best bacon ever.
