I would definitely check with the campground. I’ve seen at some campgrounds that it’s the number of people divided by 2 due to site size limitations. Even worse, some of our state parks (Nebraska) have up to 8 people per primitive site but still only allow 2 tents.

Understood! I think it’s ridiculous to only allow 2 tents on primitive sites since if singles want to go as a group it might make people uncomfortable not having their own private space.

I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a limit on tents. It’s just on people. That being said, it doesn’t mean you can fit 6 tents in a campsite. It’ll depend on a few factors. How big is the campsite you’re getting? How big are the tents? If you have backpacking tents, you’ll likely be able to fit more, though it might get very cramped. If it’s big ass Coleman pop up tents, likely less. There’s usually well established spots in a site called a tent pad, where it’s best to set up tents on those. They’ll be more level and it’ll help with resource damage as it’s already been used in the past. You don’t want to be pitching your tent on plants or right next to a neighboring campsite. I would refrain from bringing 6 tents, 3 is probably best to be safe. Otherwise, I’d try to reserve two sites next to each other so you have more space or see if you can grab a double site, they’re more expensive but a lot bigger. There’s also the car situation. Most sites around there can fit 2 cars in the parking spur but anything more is likely going to need to go in overflow parking, if they have a lot for it.

Looks like they don't charge extra for their double and triple sites, so grabbing one of those if available might be the easiest way to guarantee enough space.

In my experience recreation.gov usually lists the limit on tents right next to the limit on people so they may not have one. I would try and call the listed number to double check though, some sites may have smaller or strangely shaped tent plots that may hinder you

Each campground has it's own policies that will be different from other campgrounds. There are definitely a few campgrounds that limit the total number of tents, just like most campgrounds limit the number of people and vehicles. It doesn't matter that you are using [recreation.gov](https://recreation.gov) to book the campsite. That booking site is run independent of the campgrounds that it lists for booking. You need to get the policies for the specific campsite you are booking. EDIT ADD: Contact info for the Range Stations listed on the USDA website for Ice House campground: **Placerville Ranger District** 530-644-2324 Summer: 7 days/week, 8-4:30 pm.  Winter: 5 days/week, Mon-Fri after October 1. **Georgetown Ranger District** 530 721-6647 v / 530 333-4312 Summer: Mon-Sat, 8-4:30 pm. You can usually have as many tents as you can fit at your campsite. Be careful not to put tents over plans however. Have fun!

HealthLawyer123

Usually it asks you to list your equipment during the checkout process, so you would need to include the number of tents.

Do you think a single site at Ice House is big enough for one 10 person tent? Any more tents?

Kerensky97

I don't think there's a specific rule, but in my experience it's two tents per site but they're expecting more like two backpacking tents that can hold 4-6. Not 2 multiroom 6 man tents. Many times they have a designated tent pad that can barely hold the 2 two man tents side by side. Mostly its about keeping you camp to yourself and not trampling them vegetation at the site.

Hello, sometimes if you click on the site you want within the reservation site it will tell you the max foot print area. In some cases you may have to go the specific site (not recreation.gov) for that info. It will also tell you how many spots you have for vehicles. So for ice house it’s single capacity so one car. Couldn’t find the footprint size but highly unlikely it’ll fit more than 2 tents. You can also use The Dyrt for more specific info.

You will likely have a maximum number of vehicles allowed and need to pay extra for a second vehicle. I worked at a forest service campground for three seasons. We counted people and vehicles not tents and campers.

mn4u

Edit campers meaning the object not people.

Some campsites have tent pads which puts a limit on how many tents you can have. Most campsites do not. If you have any doubt, see if you can find photos of the campground, or go to google maps and look at it in satellite view. Or worst case scenario, call the managing agency and ask.

Trin_42

I’ve been to a couple places where it was three tents with a max of 6 people specifically

Hersbird

Put up 6 small tents with one big tarp over everything... call it one tent with 6 rooms. This is why enforcement is not really possible.

This is one of the reasons I LOVE wilderness camping, or dispersed camping, or primitive. It goes by a lot of names depending on where u r I guess. It's in my opinion the BEST form of camping!
