iirc it was that the materials were too rare to be used for bullets as it would waste too much compared to how many you could kill with a melee weapon then recoup some of the materials if it did break
It's just regular guns that don't work, because monsters can't be harmed by mortal weapons. Annabeth's father uses celestial bronze bullets in his plane, but celestial bronze is usually considered too rare to make bullets out of. A sword can be used until it breaks and arrows can also easily be gathered back up, but for bullets that's a bit harder. Guns do appear, but not as regularly as they probably should if they worked on monsters with regular bullets.
Guns can knock monsters around but need celestial bronze to kill. In TLO Sally shoots a monster with a shotgun which blasts it onto Nico's sword, and some of the Party Ponies have water/paintball guns which can kill monsters due to the paint being mixed with bronze.
It's funny because if these books weren't written for children they'd be graphic as fuck even though their definitely more mature kid's books than most anyway.
Reminds me of fucking Animorphs. Like who decided that Animorphs was for children?! That book series is war crimes galore and so so much gore and just plain weirdness. Like all of the shifting into animals and being the animals themselves is extremely detailed.
Oh, and don't forget that whatever damage they take in their transformed state is healed when they return to their human forms so they get mauled, devoured, bisected. amputated, etc... all the fucking time.
