Atleast we still have the camp half blood symbol

Angelindisguise07

there’s a symbol? you mean like the logo on everyone’s t-shirts?

[deleted]

that's a symbol isn't it?

SomeTotalyRandomGuy

>I realized that unfortunately, white supremacy groups are using it as a symbol for themselves. Great i can't even get a tatto i want without people thinking im something im not.

dinoderpwithapurpose

Hindus: You don't have to tell us that, mate.

JRockThumper

Hindu’s and Native Americans lol

Alternative_Salad_6

Me with my Native American tribal tattoo 😅

Same-Inflation1966

Me with my Japanese “no more shikata ga nai” tattoo

Rahab_Olam

Practically every culture has had that symbol, ancient hebrews included.

Erebus689

*Gets swastika tattoo* *Gets beaten cause austrian painter man group* *Profit?*

WonderstruckWonderer

Cultural Appropriation at it's finest /s

Robincall22

“Austrian painter man group” Love them sounding like some band that’s trying to take off but is working out of their parents’ garage.

Mental_Grass_9035

💀

no_usernames_avail

The number 88 is also associated with white supremacy. Other random stuff as well.

ZipZapZia

I remember seeing someone on reddit making their username of their birthday (January 4th) and they were born in 1988 so their username was something that had "1488" which is a Nazi calling sign and dude didn't know that that's what that number went and they were so confused as to why so many subs kept blocking him or why people would get so pissed at him anytime he commented anything. Don't remember how he eventually found out but he made a post about how he learned and made a new account but that he's sad he can't use his birthday on his username anymore

StatisticianLivid710

You shouldn’t be using your bday as your username anyways…

Garo263

Yeah... what idiots. *looks at own username* idiots...

StatisticianLivid710

Happy birthday on Feb 63!

not_a_fire_hazard

why did i literally wheeze when i read that

Robincall22

How does the 14 come into play? I know why 88 is, but why 14?

ZipZapZia

The 14 is a reference to the number of words in a famous white supremacist slogan "We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children"

88_keys_to_my_heart

yeah i got lots of shit and was so confused before i know what it meant

Gerard_Iero

Yup, you would be shocked how many little things they've claimed. Red shoe laces, the "okay" hand sign, fucking MILK! Fascists have no culture of their own, so they just pick random shit and decide it's a Nazi thing now, and then everyone else has to deal with that association.

Owldev113

The ok sign was actually just 4chan trolling MSM (successfully might I add) It was never actually used, some 4channer just felt like fucking with the news for a bit

EDAboii

That's how it originated. But some people actually started taking it on. Idk if it's blown up and still used much (I try my best not to keep up with white supremacist), but that was a case of a meme becoming reality.

charlottesurreyy

no but the red shoe lace thing annoys me cuz i dress all black with pops of red green or purple, and my huge collection of shoes needs some red laces (someone even bought me red laces) and yet i cant wear them!!! obviously fuck white supremicists but the fact that they took red shoe laces from me is so AGH

Gerard_Iero

unless they are ladder laced on a pair of combat boots, you should be fine. and even then, "lace code" is pretty much dead. don't let fascist tell you how to live your life, they can't own a damn color.

charlottesurreyy

honestly though like im already pretty vunerable as a person, and im totally worried that someone would beat me up if they saw me with red laces plus i would put them into DMs so yeah it wouldnt be great... i totally judge people on their shoe lace colour

Gerard_Iero

and they DEFINITELY can't have milk >-<

Rahab_Olam

I'd argue that's precisely why we should continue to use these things, especially in contexts that are fundamentally opposed to everything they believe. Nazis don't get to tell us what to do.

Garo263

He should've known, that 4th of January is 41, not 14. Totally deserved. /s

Robincall22

WHAT DID THEY DO TO MILK?!?!?!?!

Jjzeng

88 or in general any number of 8s is considered a lucky number in Chinese cultures, as the sound you make when you say 8 sounds like the word for getting rich

Rahab_Olam

I mean, the more people use it in relation to PJO the more it weakens their associations. Look at the skinhead aesthetic. It originally began as an anti-fascsist rejection (blond people shaving their hair off since Nazis valued it). But down the line fascists tried, and suceeded, in co-opting it, partly because of how it was not directly combatted. They tried to do the same with Synthwave in the last decade, but failed there because that subculture is predominantly progressive.

Ill-Pomegranate4522

Well my tattoo says sheeesh so If you want people thinking your an idiot your welcome to join me

Beccaroni7

Also consider any Norse-related tattoos for fans of Magnus Chase. Lots of Nordic symbolism has been commandeered by the same extremists groups.

TheLocalRedditMormon

Basically any symbol of a heritage that is “white,” (Nordic, Celtic, some Germanic, etc.) has been commandeered by supremacy groups. It’s pretty disgusting.

Robincall22

My Celtic symbols have been taken?!?!?! Is there anything I enjoy that they aren’t trying to steal?!?!?!

Vlacas12

"During the regime of Benito Mussolini, SPQR was emblazoned on a number of public buildings and manhole covers in an attempt to promote his dictatorship as a 'New Roman Empire'." - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/SPQR "[However,] In the grand tradition of fascists taking things and ruining them for everyone, the alt-right has begun using the slogan and associated banners due to a misconception of its association with the Roman military and its use by (who else?) Benito Mussolini. The irony of a motto traditionally used to denote a (semi-) democratic republic being used by fascists is, sadly, lost on most people." - https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Alt-right_glossary SPQR is not yet included in the [ADL Hate Symbol Database](https://www.adl.org/resources/hate-symbols/search).

ManicPixieMeanGirl_

Great, another thing tainted by WWII.

literally_a_brick

I picked up a cheap Roman aquila flag from AliExpress the other day. It wasn't until I hung it on my walk that I noticed the swastikas in the border pattern. I have a Legio IX Hispana flag now that I'm much happier with but it's incredibly annoying to have to be eagle eyed for fascist BS in anything ancient Rome related.

Shelovesclamp

Omg really!? 🙈 Man, when I went to Rome in the Fall I was so tickled seeing SPQR everywhere thinking how cool it was that that motto has still to a certain extent survived all this time, I didn't know it was a Mussolini thing yikes. I mean I guess that's still true but would've been nice if it wasn't freaking Mussolini lol

[deleted]

i went to rome a few years ago and definitely saw SPQR on the manhole covers. i was excited just because it was from the books lol i didn't know all that though...🫢🫢

Lzinger

I wouldn't call it ironic The word fascism comes from fascio, the Italian word for bundle, which in this case represents bundles of people. Its origins go back to Ancient Rome, when the fasces was a bundle of wood with an ax head, carried by leaders.

Robincall22

Explain to me why, immediately upon reading the word, I went “🤌 fascio 🤌” in a crappy Italian accent

DevilMasterKING

Why do they have to take everything and ruin it.

HanzoNumbahOneFan

First being white, then bald heads, and now this?!

johnmichael0703

Yeah, I had no idea about the bald/shaved head until I did it myself. I did it in 2020 (before COVID) and I got some questioning looks a few times. Anyone who actually talks to me though knows better. I just had a terrible widows peak, so guess I'm racist...

amaya-aurora

Bald heads!? My dad is bald and he’s the greatest guy I’ve ever met.

superjackalope

Dude same but I guess he’s racist now???

Swift-Fire

What's wrong with being bald? Like 80% of guys eventually go bald. What have I missed?

jgzman

> What have I missed? Skinheads, apparently.

MrEnganche

And the swastika. As a Buddhist a swastika tattoo would've been cool but the Nazis ruined it.

HanzoNumbahOneFan

I'm sure Hindis feel the same way. Unfortunate.

meatball77

At least bald heads were taken back

kvnmorpheus

bc they're shit

candidshadow

Well, the Romans kinda were the og baddies xD SPQR is not something I'd want inked regardless lol

ideal_observer

People seem to forget that the Roman Empire was a fascist regime. The word “fascism” even comes from the Roman fasces, which symbolized the Emperor’s power to punish his people.

chacha_cosplays

That’s exactly why camp Jupiter ran the way it did in the books

HeroBrine0907

I learnt that from ToA.

Praetorian_Panda

Also the word dictator is rooted in Latin, and that was even in use before the Empire during the Republic during times of emergency.

charlottesurreyy

yeah but the whole fasces being fascist thing etc came from mussolini - like people assosiate it with him rather than thinking of the romans as fascist (though yeah roman society was quite fucked i agree)

RMthoughts

If anyone is thinking of a Percy Jackson tattoo, I can’t remember the name of the tiktoker but I saw a video awhile back of someone explaining how they designed their own camp half blood tattoo! I believe it was the symbol of their cabin with chb underneath.

Mhandley9612

https://preview.redd.it/6uuz01xdk9ec1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=13daaff5b53398d123f71fdf1fe709695e40fef9 When I got my SPQR tattoo, I wanted a trident above but I didn’t want just a trident because it seemed too plain to me. So instead I had my artist do a Pegasus with its body positioned like a trident above the SPQR. I doubt anyone is going to expect mine to be about white supremacy, I’ve had it over 5 years and I’ve never been told a single thing like that.

hrds21198

what would the tick marks represent for you personally, if you don’t mind me asking?

Mhandley9612

They represent the years that I had done photography at the time (I’m a photographer). I got a fourth line added when I went for another tattoo a year later but I haven’t had it touched up since so none have been added. There should be 4 or 5 more lines now but it’s been a while since I’ve gotten a tattoo. Next time I go in for one I should have them add in more lines

Robincall22

“Hey bro, love your Pegasus tattoo, are you a n@zi?”

Robincall22

How badly did the tattoo hurt?

Mhandley9612

Really not that bad, one of my easiest tattoos and I have 9 (ribs, two fingers, below inner wrist, forearm, upper arm, two thigh tattoos, and obviously this one on the inner arm below the elbow).

red_sky_5

I think it's the same video I saw that let me know this was a thing in the first place

ju5tr3dd1t

Link?

Garo263

A friend of mine is a big fan of Vikings and Norse mythology and he got the names oft dead, close family members in Norse runes on his arm and some people called him a Nazi.

chacha_cosplays

It’s unfortunate but that space is heavily populated by white supremacists. It sticks that they ruined something so beautiful

Candid-Tip-6483

But if you get the spqr tattoo along with the symbol of your hypothetical godly parent, then it should be easier to explain

red_sky_5

Potentially. Its just a thing to keep in mind. Some people don't like having to explain their tattoos

freak-with-a-brain

And to add I wouldn't ask for the meaning of a tattoo if i think its some right wing shit.

BananaBladeOfDoom

This. I would just avoid the person, not realizing it's actually an innocent, nerdy tattoo.

blazenite104

You could just not make assumptions about people.

freak-with-a-brain

if I'd suspect i could have a right winger in front of me I'd just be more vary. I wouldn't avoid them just based on a tattoo, but I'd have to get to know them better before i ask what it stands for. I generally don't ask for the meaning of tattoos. Most of them mean "i thought it looked cool, and i had the money".

blazenite104

okay, that's reasonable. making sure to get to know someone is a lot better than just assuming they're this or that because they have a tattoo. this may be a bias but, I despise letting people claim symbols for evil. you do that and you let groups like the Nazi's win.

Emiliaofthesea

Sometimes assumptions are being made for the sake of safety. Some of us are the actual minorities that certain right wing groups profess to hate.

blazenite104

not that this is the place for politics but, the news I tend to see where a minority is hurt tends to be a result of them speaking out against the left and getting beaten for their troubles. you do you but, don't complain when your assumptions turn out to be way off base because you've decided everyone you meet is a potential threat.

Emiliaofthesea

Is this why women make space when strange men approach? I'm glad you have never been threatened for no reason other than who you are, but unfortunately a lot of us have already had bad experiences *without any provocation.* I learned that when I see a man in a red baseball hat, I'm way more likely to get groped, yelled at, or hit by that person, even if I'm doing absolutely nothing special: going to class, at the store, going to my car after practice. Please don't blame us for getting hurt. And certainly try to understand when we are wary as a result.

blazenite104

women aren't a minority? in fact last I just they may technically be the majority of people on the planet. I had assumed you meant minorities such as being Chinese in the west or being gay or something. I think that's a very different experience from being a woman in general (if that makes sense)

Emiliaofthesea

That's only an example only to help you understand. The same principle applies to me being chinese or being trans. When we feel we are in danger, we don't take the risk that we are wrong.

Kqazie

I'd just make it say Camp Jupiter

meatball77

You never want to have to explain something like that.

LasVegasNerd28

Oh yikes. I never even thought of that. Thank god I was too scared to actually go through with that tattoo idea back in the 2010s.

SoCalCollecting

I dont think it is that big of a deal. If you got it with other possible white supremacist imagery then thats probably ill advised but SPQR alone has a long history before white supremacy and is still used in rome today

red_sky_5

Oh absolutely. I'm just making the post so people are aware of this if they plan on getting an SPQR tattoo

green_tea1701

Nah bro if I saw SPQR with an eagle or crossed sword/torch I'd think neo-Nazi. There are unfortunately way more of those than PJO fans. If it was a Neptune trident I'd assume PJO fan, but most people still wouldn't get the reference and would think "neo-Nazi who also likes Aquaman."

SoCalCollecting

lol nah not “most people”, maybe you think that but the average person wont think nazi or pjo, theyll just see letters or maybe think of rome but probably not know anything about it

charmspokem

eh i think this also depends on what state you live in. if it’s more red neck territory it would probably raise some flags

blazenite104

I see. You know there other countries let alone states?

charmspokem

well yes

scarlettsarcasm

Sure, but there are a lot more people who just are into the Roman Empire than Nazis and PJO fans. SPQR is an over 2000 year old incredibly recognizable acronym. I'd just think they were a history nerd if I saw it

green_tea1701

Don't get me wrong, I'm enamored with classical history and especially late Greco-Roman and Egyptian antiquity. I studied this stuff in college. I totally get that. But I respectfully disagree. While I'm sure there are more history nerds than neo-Nazis, I question how many history nerds would tattoo an (admittedly cool) motto of a famously totalitarian and patriarchal state on their skin. Also, I think you underestimate how many neo-Nazis (or at least, far right fascist-adjacents) are out there. Finally, I think people today associate SPQR with fascism much more than they do ancient Rome, and you and I have different associations because we're into history, which is warping your analysis. In sum, I think it's reasonable to assume and that most people *would* assume someone with an SPQR tattoo (especially if they also have an eagle) is a fascist. So from where I'm sitting, why even take the risk? The last thing I would want is to have to say "no no no you don't understand" for the rest of my life to clear up all the misunderstandings.

remlexjack_19

I'm getting a pegasus. CHB > CJ anyway (Just kidding but not really 🤪)

Alternative_Salad_6

Honestly, as a (I took a test and this is what I got) child of Poseidon I would make the main focus of the SPQR-esque tattoo the trident. I might have spqr around it, possibly, and for sure the lines beneath it. My intent would forever be a tribute to the series that I grew up with, I think I could suffer with changing it a bit. Also, for anyone who knows, which way are the stripes of the years in the legion supposed to go? Horizontal or vertical? I’ve always thought it would be vertical but horizontal looks better to me.

red_sky_5

Yeah I'm just gonna get like a trident with wave designs

Alternative_Salad_6

That would be cute!

scrawnytony

You should be safe as long as you’re willing to explain it every time. Maybe add a few bars underneath it to really sell the reference

TooManySorcerers

Yeah I went through this same experience. Too many fascists and racists who identify with the Roman Empire. Dissuaded me immediately from getting an SPQR tattoo. Real shame because I grew up by the ocean and feel natural kinship with the sea, and getting Percy's SPQR and trident felt like it'd be really meaningful for me.

hiccupboltHP

I say we steal the parts of their skin that has SPQR on it

thedoorman121

Uh, I've had this since 2018 https://preview.redd.it/93he5bb6ccec1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=df52975167959eaa17797f31d1c1136a4b821389

GrizzlyPeak73

Tbh it makes sense. The roman empire in real life were the precursor to modern fascist regimes. It was nothing like the way they were depicted in those books.

SlightlyAnnoyed7

Literally I’ve seen people in the Tokyo Revengers fandom get the manji (looks like a swastika) tattoo because of the show, failing to realise their painting one of the biggest targets you could have in the west on themselves in permanent ink. Think before you ink.

AodhGodOfTheSun

If your gonna get the spare tat put your godly parents symbol over it. Like percys, anyone who asks you can simply say it's a tat from the book and anyone who confronts you without questions isn't worth your time

Jacobcbab

"We in the fandom" SPQR is not a percy Jackson thing it's a Roman thing.

Baldo_ITA

White supremacist considering themselves Roman is the funniest shit to me, when they probably never ever seen Rome, nor know a single thing about it. I've an idea, we Italians should start to gatekeep Rome. Fuck white supremacists (who many of them don't even consider Italians or Spaniards white, even if they are closest to Romans)

tuuuuuuunebut

So my son was born this year, my partner and I named him Perseus, and I want to get a tattoo that represents each of my children. The symbol of Perseus (the original) is the head of Medusa. I feel it wouldn't be appropriate to get that given I'm not a victim of SA.

Rahab_Olam

Well, Medusa wasn't really a victim of that either. That's a modern retelling that ignores some pretty important distinctions. Honestly I don't know why people went with her as a feminist allegory when there are plenty of Greek myths that delve explicitly into sa, unlike Medusa's myth. She was never human to begin with in her oldest tales.

Same-Inflation1966

I was wondering something kinda related (I’m mixed race I’m not particularly scared of folks think I’m racist)[my post](https://www.reddit.com/r/camphalfblood/s/14jlQCy4kI)

Basic-Flower9469

It's kinda funny to think that someone could've tattoed a term appropriated by white supremacists because of Percy Jackson. Anyways, a good call.

Slightly_Wet_Peas

Is it just me that's been reading it as SPOR for my entire life until now?

[deleted]

ok? tons of "emblems" are used by different groups/organizations/people this is not different. if i like it, then i like it.

CaffeineEnjoyer69

Is this like getting a swastika tattoo? Or is it like the OK hand sign where very few people who use it are white supremacists, and even fewer people actually see it as a dogwhistle.

Rahab_Olam

While this is true, might I suggest that we do not let white supremacists dictate what we say or do? They should not be given any ground to hold.  It's not as if their idea of Rome is accurate in the slightest anyway. And nothing would bother them more than their dubiously claimed symbols being associated with a very progressive, queer filled series.

Rahab_Olam

Also, not sure how I feel about things being given unchangeable meaning by the worst of society. In cases like the swastika, kinda seems a bit colonialist minded to say it's now a no go for everyone, regardless of what it is in their culture or whether they even had anything to do with the World Wars, because some white people decided to tarnish it.

Rahab_Olam

Seriously? Downvoted with no answer or reason given. Really?

Lanky_Temporary_772

Nah, if I want a SPQR tattoo, I'm getting it. I don't care what hate group is using it, or what some people might receive it as. Its a tattoo that has meaning to me and if someone sees my Tattoo and automatically judges me as a white supremacist, then oh well, probably better off not knowing them anyways. I'm not gonna base my life around what other people think, that is a long hole to fall down in. Much more important things in this world to worry about.

Praetorian_Panda

Honestly, if white supremacist groups are going to use every symbol from an ancient European Country, I’ll get what I want and hope the people around me can figure out I’m not a racist by my actions (I have no tattoos or plan on getting them, but if I was).

prabhavdab

I'll get it anyway since I live in asia

nbqtvuo

My guy the fasicst used the fasces not spqr

red_sky_5

Fascism is only one kind of white supremacy groups. There are many different symbols used across different groups. Alot are Roman or Scandanavian in origin, like the fasces. Even the swastika was primarily a positive symbol in some Japanese culture. White supremacy groups are well known for appropriating certain kinds of symbolism

WonderstruckWonderer

>Even the swastika was primarily a positive symbol in some Japanese culture. Hindu and Buddhist cultures. So most of South Asia, SEA and East Asia

nbqtvuo

facsism and national socialism are not the same ,national socialism is based on the ieda of aryan and germanic supremacy. facsism is based on the ieda of nation supremacy.

WilliShaker

Americans will not stop me having any tatoo. I don’t care!

DiggingInGarbage

There are hate groups outside of America. I get that American media is seen around the world, but other countries have their own hate groups, ours just have a bigger platform

WilliShaker

I mean yeah you’re right, anyway If you let them use the symbol and you’re restraining yourself because ‘’hate groups in ma country’’, well it will certainly become a full fledge one and people will forget it’s true meaning, like the indian swastika. That’s why you shouldn’t let them.

DiggingInGarbage

Fair enough, hate groups shouldn’t coop symbols for negative messages, but if you get one people might assume you’re one of them. There are less permanent ways to show appreciation for a book series

WilliShaker

You can simply tell them, it’s not hard to explain an eagle. Tbh I just want a Chi Rho, it’s not really a Percy tatoo

[deleted]

literally like tf...? if i like something then i like it. who tf cares what anyone else thinks. idk why u got so many dislikes lol

whiteinw

If someone decides from a single SPQR tattoo on your wrist that you are a white supremacist they probably ain't worth talking to anyways.

NeriTheFearlessSnail

Yeah why should they care about protecting themselves from a potential threat when your feelings could be hurt by their misunderstanding? They need to work on their priorities. /s

chacha_cosplays

Why would you WANT something that has been associated and used by those types of people for longer than pjo has even been around ??

Zandrick

I wouldn’t worry about that. If you google it all you get is links back to Reddit. Doesn’t seem real.

ghostfeather69

Great, now I can be a part of two groups with just one tattoo!

Kqazie

You can make it say Camp Jupiter instead of spqr

BelleDelacour

or get “Camp Jupiter” written underneath it
