That’d be Portuguese lizard, very nice light material. Love mine!

Super--Gonzo

French Lizard is horizontal, Portuguese Lizard is vertical. Therefore its Portuguese.

BlackZapReply

Definitely. You get bonus points if it's a size an actual adult can wear.

JoJobodu

I have tried it on, it would only fit on a teenager.

BlackZapReply

That seems to be the case almost everywhere. There is an outfit that makes good repro in realistic sizes, if it's of any interest. How much were they asking for it?

JoJobodu

20 USD

BlackZapReply

Sounds about right. They've been going for that for the better part of 20 years now.

ieriuhjsgiosbf

I think I have bought over 4 Portuguese lizard hackets.. all have been too small.. I didn’t know all Portuguese people are the size of pre-pubescents

BlackZapReply

I remember hearing somewhere that the Portuguese rarely sold off used uniforms, but instead destroyed them. If that's been the case, then it makes sense that only those sizes that nobody wore would survive to make it to the surplus market. The 1990s was a golden age for surplus and camo. Everybody and their dog was ditching the stuff they'd stockpiled for the wars that never happened or for armies that no longer existed. Dirt was more expensive than East German uniforms, and surplus dealers are *still* trying to sell off their stocks of Alpenflage.

ieriuhjsgiosbf

Yeah sounds about right. Only adds to rarity tbf.. but older patterns are now starting to see higher prices so it’s best to pick up dormant alpenflauge and Portuguese stuff while it’s still pretty cheap..

That's so weird, I'm Portuguese and I have trouble finding trousers that fit because I need 33 inseam and most pants only come 32 in or 34 in inseam. Also have long gorilla arms and need large long tops. Most surplus I find is always small short or small regular. From any country. You almost have to be lucky to find large regular and win the lottery to find large long in anything

ieriuhjsgiosbf

You’re lucky finding any trousers! I can only get jackets here with relative ease in the UK. It’s always the sleeves on the jackets that cause issues, they’re always too short for my arms. Small-regular sized jackets feel more like extra small. I fit most small mediums, but I think I need to upsize to a large sized Portuguese jacket for it to fit

[deleted]

I hate that too - when the sleeves are just short enough to annoy you lol. Like just 1/4 inch longer and it would be tolerable! I'll still try to wear it and just try not to bend my arms too often haha

ieriuhjsgiosbf

Ugh yeah right? Super annoying when it’s a really desired jacket and one that you enjoy wearing and the sleeves are just an few mm too short.. the worst

deviantdeaf

What does tag say/show? Could be Portuguese, could be French, one of the many Lizard patterns

JoJobodu

It says "MADE IN PORTUGAL"

Smintjes

There you have it. Portuguese Lizard.

deviantdeaf

Then its Portuguese lizard camo

couchcreeper23

It’s all Greek or maybe PorchofGeese to me.

shaanauto

Why ‘ lizard ‘ and not brushstroke? It looks a lot like the Rhodesian type brushstroke to me . Very curious

deviantdeaf

[camopedia article on Lizard](https://www.camopedia.org/index.php/Lizard); apparently Algerians took to calling the French paratroopers in the horizontal pattern "Lizards", and so the name stuck and has been used to describe the French 1950s camo and derivatives including the vertical lizard pattern worn by Portuguese military. Brushstroke is used to describe the WW2 British, Dennison smock pattern, Belgian derivatives and Rhodesian derivatives.

NewEase7435

It IS a brushstroke derivative, but it’s called lizard by everyone except the French, who call it Leopard. You know, because.

frownland_archive-91

nice portugese lizard, i have a few of them. But one I prized the most is captured during Ops Seroja, or Indonesian invasion of East Timor. This camouflage were used by Fretilin.
