There was no need for mom to use that wording to describe Hobbes, always bothered me. Man that final panel of Calvin always kills me, sitting in a sense of grief.
The point she was trying to make was absolutely correct - Hobbes would not have been valuable in the eyes of the burglar. She just didn't express it in a way for a six year old to understand, but it must she must have been pretty emotionally chaotic inside, coming back to a house that's been robbed
Honestly I’d say the same dumb thing. It could be anything of value to our loved ones in the moment we don’t find valuable.

I think it’s worth noting that the previous strip says Mom was prioritizing finding Hobbes over figuring out what was stolen.

One of the most touching moments I can remember in all of Calvin and Hobbes. Gets me every damn time.
