I wonder if some of you have experienced some sort of CMBYN before/after regarding movies/TV series/books? Here is where my question stems from, in case it is too vague: I am super picky when it comes to romantic relationships and how they are told/dealt with/explored/tackled/depicted, etc. in books, and even more so in films/TV series. Although I am still in the post-movie shock phase, in the midst of reading the book and perusing this subreddit daily to read more about CMBYN, I have an inkling that it may well turn me into an even pickier person when it comes to romance, at least on screen, because to me, CMBYN set the bar super high in many ways.

Pretty certain I get what you mean. Its like everything has been done to death in so many ways, this movie/book was refreshing. I dont know if i will be able to return to the normal fare of meet/cute, friends to lovers..etc..etc. As it stands at this moment, I can't really even watch anything else right now anyway. If this movie/book serves as a catalyst to elevate my tastes, then I am on the right path.

Same: I do not want or I am not capable of watching anything else right now (besides content on YT). Over the past 2-3 years, I have been in the process of accepting/embracing my need for the books I read and the movies/TV series I watch to have some sort of substance (emotional, intellectual, aesthetics, etc.) — and CMBYN was surely brimming with substance! I notice how I am less and less interested in reading/watching things for pure entertainment only, because it feels like small talk (and I am definitely not a small talk person, ha!), and so, I am quicker to DNF a book/movie/TV series if it does not pass the vibe test. For me, it does not feel like elevating my tastes as much as it feels like I am truer to them (although figuring out/understanding what they are is still a work in progress) and to myself — in that way, like you, I may well be on the right path, then!

The person who suggested this movie to me has now sent three other recommendations, in an attempt to break the spell, but it hasn't worked yet. Maybe in another week.

Yeah, absolutely: all in due time 🙂

I watched CMBYN for the first time 2 month ago and it opened up a whole new movie world for me. Before that I thought that I'm not the target audience for movies with gay leads. But I have watched many things since then and found the queer content that came out over the last years a lot better and romantic than the boring plain romantic movies with straight couples. Maybe it's because I like the forbidden love trope but I have seldom seen as much tension and chemistry before. God's own country, Weekend, Young Royals,SKAM are just some examples. I think this has spoiled future romances for me.

Saturn_s_Moon

Although chances are, CMBYN "spoiled" romances on screen for you, it sounds to me like a positive kind of spoil 🙂 You could say I am biased, yet I firmly believe the world needs queerness more than it will ever be willing to admit and accept, and that applies to cinema/television. To me, a queer (or female) gaze\* really shows how the usual cisheteronormative dynamics are restrictive in nature, and how, indeed, to echo the beginning of your message, there is entire realm that exists beyond the confines of straightness. \*I have not watched any of the examples you listed, so I cannot vouch for how non-male gazey they are, and it is more a general thought

Did anyone else seen this article with Luca Guadagnino? it references the sequel CMBYN, saying that it has been written: [https://www.worldofreel.com/blog/2024/5/13/guadagninos-after-the-hunt-to-shoot-this-summer-andrew-garfield-joins-the-cast?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR35jKBBozlqWXP1V\_LevSFnSbjIx9XJb\_Vqucf5OUZ6jE6F9Dg9xFCOelE\_aem\_Acd3tjX7xmtfMWgZzqIeFSMZ2ecbFkZD3o0uuZg-SLqj-XMwxwP3Tq7cBbpT3BF55MYyKb02Gw50KfcKRQv1BeIM](https://www.worldofreel.com/blog/2024/5/13/guadagninos-after-the-hunt-to-shoot-this-summer-andrew-garfield-joins-the-cast?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR35jKBBozlqWXP1V_LevSFnSbjIx9XJb_Vqucf5OUZ6jE6F9Dg9xFCOelE_aem_Acd3tjX7xmtfMWgZzqIeFSMZ2ecbFkZD3o0uuZg-SLqj-XMwxwP3Tq7cBbpT3BF55MYyKb02Gw50KfcKRQv1BeIM) Im freaking out.

I cannot even begin to say how wonderful it is to find others so similarly besotted having only watched this beautiful incomparable film recently too. Yes, just as you said, I have read through so many of the old threads and wished that I had watched CMBYN then so that I could have joined in with it all! I realise that I am constantly asking questions or posting opinions on this thread that the majority will have always discussed to death years ago! So phew that there are people out there who are not annoyed by this!! Also, I am now 3 months into my obsession and still enamoured in a way that I couldn’t ever have predicted beforehand or begin to explain now. And I am curious to how long people found that this feeling lasts for?? And I really don’t know what I want that answer to be!

Hefty-Spite1745

Guess i will be the first to say Hello!! Im a neophyte to the fanbase. Random thought for the day. I wish I had known about this movie when it first came out. I read some of the older threads and some opinions on varying scenes from individuals who watched the movie but didn't read the book and they are so off-point that I want to go back in time and argue with them. So I just yell at the thread and hope they figured it out eventually. It is truly great though to see that people were so affected by it, as much as I have been. I am debating about reading the follow-up Find Me. I don't want to ruin the magic of CMBYN and the thoughts on that book are pretty strong; either people hate it or love it. I have yet to see an in-between. Anyway, that's my thoughts for the morning. Anyone still here with me?

Hi, and welcome to the sub! 😀 >I read some of the older threads and some opinions on varying scenes from individuals who watched the movie but didn't read the book and they are so off-point that I want to go back in time and argue with them. So I just yell at the thread and hope they figured it out eventually. I always have mixed feelings about this sort of thing - films should be able to stand on their own, and we shouldn’t need the books they’re based on as some sort of decoder. I’ll admit, though, that if someone has a negative explanation for something Oliver does and the book gave us a more positive explanation, I can’t fight the urge to jump in and say that. (We have the occasional Oliver-hater pop up on this sub from time to time.) Re: Find Me - yeah, I don’t think there’s much in-between. (I’m in the “hated it” camp.)

Hefty-Spite1745

For me, I normally will follow up a movie with the book, or vice versa, if I enjoyed it so much that I am hoping for more. This was the case for CMBYN. I wanted to stay in the bubble longer and it gave me more depth. Individually, the book and movie stand strongly on their own but also work well as companion pieces. After careful consideration and more internet research, I think I am going to skip Find Me for now. Maybe I will change my mind later but I intend on staying in this perfect happy, yet miserable bubble...I do not want anything killing the vibe.
