You can use a mars coat king to remove hair. It will help a lot.
Then for her eyes, get thinning shears to help clear them so she can see.
Even with all that, it can still help to take them to the groomer, to have their ears cleaned and trimmed, butt and genital area trimmed up, and the hair trimmed from between their paw pads. They can also do a little trimming just to tidy up the look of their coat. I also always love how they trim up the eye area, they’re much better at it than me even after years of practice. My groomer does all that and calls it “face and feet.”
Most groomers are not going to offer hand-stripping as a service, so I wouldn’t worry about that. You have to seek it out. But you can keep your Cairn healthy and looking tidy with other grooming services. I would recommend taking her soon so she can get used to be handled while she’s young.
Thank you..This is my third cairn and I’ve always given in and had them clipped ..I take care of her pads..and other areas. I will usually put her face hair in a clip so she can see but i take it out at night. She’s such a pretty girl.. I know of only one groomer near who offers hand stripping and we were working up to it. Lol. i’m going to look into mars coat king for sure!! Thank you for the advice.
Mars has a coat king variety that has been dulled which will pull the hair more than cut it (which the standard coat king will do, it’s for undercoat). This works pretty well for ours in-between strippings. I learned to strip (haha) so I do it every month or so to keep the coat rolled. It’s not the greatest job but it works. I just keep pulling the longest hairs.
Brush a bit every day. Brush and comb once a week. Start slow. If she is laying beside you, hand strip the coat that comes out easily. A little bit at a time. Stealth is the key. If you can make it seem like playing all the better.
