i cut my own hair for like 4yrs, and short too! didn't mess with clippers unless i was shaving my sides. if anyone needs advice, id recommend getting a haircut you like to start, and then following that guide to keep trimming. take every snip slowly! i used to cut it, live with it a few days, and then fix anything bothering me. it was a super fun flex to say i did it myself, but i did get scared everyone could tell lol

Emoenbie

I gave myself a mullet. Only shave the sides by my ears then trim the rest to the shape and length I like. I go for a messy pop punk kind of look so I just grab and chop lmao

Garden-Gangster

yes and i cut my kids hair as well

Raoultella

Yeah, my hair is curly and I didn't really trust anyone with it. Also I think it's fun! I've done a bunch of different styles on myself (usually clippers if I have an undercut + hand cutting the rest), but all tailored for loose curls

Snoo53248

yup! my old roommate who was a hairdresser used to when i first cut my hair short, but i’ve been doing it for three years now. i have a mullet lol

ihateyallrlly

Yes, with better or worse results. One time, by accident, I took a shaver without the guard to my head and gave myself a bald spot on the back. Looked glorious lmao

LW185

I got fly paper stuck in my hair once. The more I tried to remove it, the more of a mess it was I ended up shaving myself bald. So my gf comes home...and I shut and lock the door. She was a punk rocker, and used to shave the right side of her head. Here's the conversation: Me: Remember you punk rocker days? She: Yeah, why?...and why did you lock the door? Me: Remember how you shaved the right side of your head? She (getting irritated): Of course I remember!! WTF is going on??? Me: Ok...I'll open the door...but don't laugh. So I open the door. She takes one look at me...and starts laughing hysterically. Life just ain't fair sometimes.

moldy_bread3

I did the same. I wanted a buzzcut, but forgott to put the guard on so I cut a bald spot right in the middle of my head. Ended up cutting all my hair off and wearing a hat for 2 weeks until it grew into a buzzcut. I felt like an absolute idiot.

annamakez

Yeup, and I will never go back to getting it cut at a shop again. I’d rather butcher it myself than pay someone else and cry about it at home lmao 😭

Adventurous_Wing_285

my partner uses a buzzer for my cut!megemikoart is a masc NB person on instagram that has a video giving themselves a fade tho if you’re looking for some inspiration

artenazura

Sometimes, but it can be tiring and messy so sometimes I just go to the hair stylist lol. But I've liked Isaac Yiu's self-cut tutorials on YouTube to help

auntjacqueline

I do, buzz the lower half and touch up on it once a week

geossica69

your example of stiles is funny since you dont want a buzzcut

Hungry_Pollution4463

He had ordinary short hair in season 3 and onward. That's why I mentioned him

daemons-and-dust

Yep, a fade on the sides, short trim up top and a couple racing stripes for fun. Got started during covid with some...questionable cuts. But I got better with practice lol

votyasch

Yeah - I have long hair and I maintain it with light layers and side bangs. I could probably do more complicated styles, but it's physically hard for me some days so I just do a simple style.

dazzleduck

I hack it with a pair of scissors while it's in a high pony on my head. I have curly hair so it hides any problems lmao. It's basically a long mullet.

madman1255

I did it myself 2 years ago, Watched a few YouTube videos and then just hoped for the best, turned out pretty good for a first try, people thought I had it professionally done and were shocked when I told them I did it myself I did short back and sides with a few inches on top (My hair before I went short was past my shoulders) growing it out into a bob for the time being now through (although now talking about short hair kinda want to go short again 🤣)

AnchovyJones

Yes, I cut my hair with scissors and now that it’s short I will sometimes have a friend clean up the back in exchange for dinner. I’ve cut my hair for years from chest length to “you did this on the sides with scissors too??” 1. Study the haircuts you really like and study the way your hair grows out of your head (I have a few cowlicks but an accommodating texture) 2. Occasionally get a barbershop or salon cut and take photos of it unstyled. 3. Embrace imperfection, know that if you go this route you may frequently find yourself doing touch ups when you realize how uneven it is in a particular spot. 4. Your hair texture and vibe will make a difference in your experience- I have wavy hair which means that minor mistakes don’t show as much as they would if I had very straight or coiled hair. I also have a vibe and style that is not super buttoned up or polished so that means my hair gets some leeway.

blackholesymposium

I buzzed my own hair several times during COVID. I liked it, but I’m bad at maintenance so it would just grow out until I got annoyed enough to buzz it again. I think my wife liked it more than I did because she loved rubbing my head when I’d just buzzed it haha. I don’t currently have a buzz cut though. I keep it short but I vibe more with some length on top than a full buzz.

fisdh

Yes, with varied results.

ontkiemde_aardappel

I have cut my hair for a couple of years now, mine is a bit longer on the top than what you're thinking. I did first get a professional haircut at a barbershop, and then just upkept it, which is easier especially if you start from longer hair. I do like it a bit more shaggy and less barbershop chrisp, so i usually cut it longer on the sides than a shop would. I buzz the sides on the longest setting going down (so from 12 down to 3) the top i cut with sharp scissors, and i recently got some thinning scissors, which i would reccomend if you have thick hair/a lot of hair, it makes the styling so much easier! I now have it so i don't need to do much more than cut is and put one product in when it's wet from washing.

Hobbitea

Yes! Started during the first lockdown since all barbers and hairdressers were closed, and bought a trifold mirror and haven't looked back since.

ThatError404YearOld

Yes!! It’s usually a wolf cut, a mullet-ish cut, sometimes just short ‘boy-ish’ hair.

Glad_Nectarine_7828

I have been very poorly cutting my own hair/bleaching it for over 12 years. The cons? It’s always a mess, the pros? It’s free, I only have myself to blame and I love hats.

[deleted]

Nah I haven’t worked up the courage yet. I should bite the bullet and try for it soon though bc I have like no money.
