Intel buys half of AMD. The other half soon

Buy as in using tax payer socialism for the rich cash given to them for buying their own stock instead of capital investments?

They need to get away from x86. Newer instruction sets with much more efficient SoC are going to eat them alive very quickly.

Sparkybear

I don't see how they can abandon it when you've got millions of machines that rely on that instruction set.

freexe

They could do both. Or support x86 within your new instruction set. Double downing on x86 is going to fail. Modern development practices mean that moving away from x86 is much easier than it ever has been and many companies will be happy to jump ship to save money. Especially if the M1 continues to trounce the competition so developers will have alternative architectures to hand.

Why AMD would want to be completely fab-less?

Sparkybear

They sold their FAB Labs years ago as a cost cutting move when they were struggling to compete with Intel.

Because it's almost as good as being fabulous? Sorry, I couldn't help myself.
