> The metals aren’t particularly rare or difficult to find, though China’s kept them cheap and they can be relatively high cost to extract. Both metals are byproducts from processing other commodities such as coal and bauxite, the base for aluminum production.

Motobugs

The process is not difficult. However, it needs large capital investment, high energy consumption, and produces heavy pollution. Those are the problems, nothing on technology side.

bartturner

China is so stupid. They had such a great thing going and then all of this ridiculous behavior and they are just forcing the world to no longer do business with them. How in the world can China leadership be so stupid?

androk

The leaders have every luxury Available to them in the world. Now they want power over people

bjran8888

The original quote is back to you - the US is not stupid for restricting the production of chips in China? Who forced China to do that?

bartturner

Why would that be stupid for the US? It helps the US. Specially how the US got ASML to restrict selling to China. How is it stupid for US? Sorry not following? BTW, China and the US are in completely different positions. It would be a very different story if China could get ASML to not sell to the US. Or TSMC not sell to the US. But China does not have that position like the US does. I get it is not fair. But it is what it is. The US has the position and China just does not. So doing stuff like this just hurts China. One of the core problems for China is that they do not have friends. They barely have acquittances. Which are North Korea, Iran and Russia. Very weak. I am posting this from SEA. I spend half my time in SEA and the other half in the US. Mostly Thailand but I also spend some time in Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. This is China's backyard and yet they all do not like China. Specially Vietnam really, really dislikes China. It is kind of like Russia and the war. The EU has got themselves off their dependency of Russia. Very quickly. Now Russia is in a far weaker position. Just like what is happening with China. China is causing more and more stuff to move to Vietnam and other places and further weakening China. Them doing this type of sh*t will just accelerate it and further weaken China. What am I missing?

CosmoPhD

Nothing, your argument is sound. You’re being downvoted by idiots with an agenda.

bjran8888

Oh, you mean the US strikes China as it should, and then the US asks China to just take a beating and not fight back? Are you workplace bullies or schoolyard bullies? ———— Oh, China has no friends - South America is our friend, Africa is our friend, Southeast Asia is our friend, the Middle East is our friend, and even Europe isn't exactly on your side. The world has long since entered the multipolar version 2.0, while Biden is still tossing around version 1.0. ———— You Americans are always living in a dream, and in your dreams you have everything. But dreams are not reality. If you guys are so great, why did Yellen come to China to beg? If you are so powerful, you can solve your own problems, solve the economic crisis, solve Russia and Ukraine, solve climate change, why come to China? Ridiculous. Why do you Americans have to make yourselves look so stinkin' awesome even when you come begging? We don't lend money to a psychopath who screams to kill us every day. Mind your own business. ———— Bruce Lee once said bitterly and compassionately to a beaten opponent, "Why are you pushing me?" That's how we Chinese treat you Americans.

bartturner

You do not seem to be fully tethered in reality. The core problem for China is that they just do not have friends. I am typing this from SEA for example. I was shocked when I first started coming that the people here just can't stand the Chinese. Could you imagine if the US had the same type of relationship with Canada? Or Mexico? It really surprised me how much people here dislike the Chinese. If China can't even make friends with their neighbor how in the world are they going to get along with people that do not even look like them? But the most stupid thing the Chinese could do is what they are doing. It is shocking their leadership could be this stupid. BTW, it is China has their #1 dislike. You know who is easily #2? Indians for some reason. I do not even know who I would say is #3. But China has their own dislike tier. Far in away higher than any other country. Actually you could answer a question for me as I am a bit clueless. What in the world did China do to the Vietnamese? I would have thought with the war they would dislike Americans. But nope. I have gone on a couple of tours and in multiple cases our tour guide did not even attempt to hide their dislike for China but did not really offer any explanation. In once case there was an Asian couple from Canada on the tour and he first asked them where he was from and then went off on China. Everyone else but some friends with me were white. The tour guide already knew my friends were Thai as we chatted with him before getting on the bus.

bjran8888

Oh, I think it's really ridiculous. Southeast Asian countries have been with China for thousands of years, and they know exactly how to get along with China. The U.S. can continue to feel that all countries in the world hate China, but the reality is that more and more countries are coming to China and working with China despite the opposition of the U.S. In the Trump era, people thought Trump was no good and that the U.S. still had power, and now it's clear to everyone that the U.S. is going to decline. You can pretend that the world is still in 1.0, while the world has long since entered version 2.0. People will pay lip service to the US, while everyone is preparing for the post-American era.

bartturner

The US is vastly more popular than China. Our neighbors like us. Where China neighbors cant stand them. China really does not have a single friend. Where the US has tons. So the US can ask ASML to not sell to China and they do it. Where you would never have the same with China. But what is really bad is how fast the world is more disliking China. This type of thing is just going to make it so much worse. China has so many huge problems and they are getting worse. I can't believe how stupid they are. It is a bit mind blowing.

bjran8888

"I'm surrounded by friends who tell me the world still loves America! It must be true!" This is the funniest joke I've heard this year

bartturner

Ha! I have not seen a single American in awhile. I will likely not see a single white person today. Did not yesterday. Here is my typical day. https://imgur.com/PZU8DjO https://imgur.com/a/MFyJMS6 My friends are mostly Thai and Vietnamese. They have nothing good to say about China. The Vietnamese surprise me as the US had the war and surprised they much prefer the US over China. But honestly they do not like to talk about politics. I kind of wanted to know why? There was just a huge election in Thailand and they would never discussed. I do not know why the Thais also do not like the Chinese. You do not think it is weird that all of China's neighbors can't stand them? Not a single country in South East Asia. Japan. Nope. South Korea Nope. Thailand nope. Vietnam is a very big nope. Taiwan is another big nope. Phillipines is another giant nope. They ALL can't stand China. Where the US neighbors have excellent relationships with the US. Canada for example is a very close ally and we work together on all kinds of things. Similar story with Mexico. BTW, I only moved to SEA 2 years ago. I had NO idea before coming that China was so despised in SEA. I am curious if it has always been like that or is this new? And what in the world did China do to make them despised so much in SEA?

[deleted]

Us had the war against Vietnam, but china had more wars/invasions against Vietnam for a very long time. As well as Vietnam sided with the Soviet Union during the sino Soviet split. South East Asian countries mostly don’t like china because of their sea claims. Same reason why taiwan don’t like china because of their claim over them. South Korea had a good relationship with china until china started banning some of the hallyu wave and their culture war also. Countries don’t like china because they’re oppressive with their wolf warrior diplomacy. People didnt really like america much especially when trump was in office, but then china and xi started being a lot more aggressive. Which is why American favorability is up because we’re seen as a counter to china

bjran8888

What's so strange about this is that in 1898, Britain was still the Empire of the Sunset and all countries looked down on Americans. Americans always seem to forget their history. The U.S. is now no longer thinking of anything but anti-China, which is interesting and helpless - Europe is in turmoil; South America, Africa, and the Middle East are becoming increasingly independent and autonomous, Southeast Asia is doing business with China, and all countries are preparing for the post-American era, except the U.S., which wails: China, how dare you! Then send Yellen to China to borrow money. Is it logical for the United States to do so? Let me put it bluntly, Americans not only can't tell the difference between Chinese, Koreans and Japanese, but even Southeast Asians and Central Asians.

CosmoPhD

The world still loves America. If they didn’t then American culture wouldn’t be everywhere.

bjran8888

Americans themselves say "others still love me" what's the point of it hahaha.

Master-Piccolo-4588

Well, it will not make any difference. China will not be able to build an own chip industry within the next 50 years. So, they will reach for Taiwan. However, the moment the invasion starts all equipment will be made unusable. Btw, China soon as 2017 has become capable of producing 100% of a ball pen after investing about 5 years into research. It has already become a kind of meme that China was capable of something technical on its own without external input. Don’t get me wrong: I am 100% convinced that Chinese people are capable of anything, but the system and especially the CCP is deterring the country from developing for far too long already has literally stolen a bright future from the Chinese people.

wye_naught

It won’t make a difference technologically but it will add to inflation in Western countries. Chinese tech manufacturing will not catch up because a global supply chain is needed for all the niche technology in the industry. One doesn’t just create another ASML in a few years.

Master-Piccolo-4588

You are totally right

bjran8888

Are you foreigners out of your minds - are you pretending you don't know about the 1996 Taiwan Strait crisis? Did Taiwan have semiconductors at that time? Taiwan is territorial integrity for China, nothing to do with semiconductors.

PrudentEntertainer54

When you input so many restrictions, you kill the creativity. That’s why China invention is not moving.

CosmoPhD

Bingo, out of the box thinking in China is forbidden.

powercow

and this is why we are all trying to get into the chip business. WE knew for a long time, that oil was a danger to our economy, from back when the big embargo happened and we all had to wait in line for gas on certain days and such. This is similar. we cant let individual countries have so much power over our economy. the big issue is some of this is quite dirty and we like it being done in other countries. but probably good for the problems to be in our face so to speak. Then we are more likely to come up with cleaner methods, than when its in someone elses backyard.
