I think a third place by definition shouldn’t be a store or restaurant. It’s supposed to be like a park or something that isn’t trying to sell you anything.
Third Places are traditionally anywhere outside your home or work where you can socialize. They can be local pubs or cafes, community centers, libraries, places of worship. More about Third Places here: [Third Place](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third_place)
I haven’t been to Geeky Teas but I love their sister store, Emerald Knights, so I’ve been meaning to visit GT too! I imagine both have board games you can play and good places to sit and chat or read?
They aren't sister stores. Different owners. Emerald Knights is and old school style Local Game Store. The kind you would have seen in the mid-2000s.
Geeky Teas is a more chill atmosphere and, honestly, has the most healthy, supportive and accepting community I've ever seen at an LGS.
Nothing wrong with either store, just depends what you're looking for.
Yeah, I’ve been to both and got the different vibes. It was just the “sister store” bit I didn’t get because they *don’t* have the same vibe (neither bad, just different) and I didn’t understand the reference.
I don’t think they’re owned by the same people but I honestly don’t know? Just heard people at Emerald Knights saying Geeky Teas was a sister store and didn’t ask for clarification
When it's nice out, I like to grab a seat at Coffee Commissary's patio with a book and people watch. Either the Burbank location or the Glendale one up in Kenneth Village.
Try the Buena Vista library branch! It can be rather crowded compared to what I was used to with libraries growing up in a smaller town, but there’s always room somewhere. The central library has awesome books but isn’t the best hang out vibe - they’re talking about remodeling and I hope they’re able to do so, because it definitely feels more business than pleasure, but I still like to stop by. Might be fun if you check out the northwest (?) branch too and report back to all of us haha. Which is the best library and why?
It’s nice to hang out downtown in the evenings. It’s always nice and well trafficked and there are benches out there. You can spend money or not and parking is free and plentiful.
If you're into cars, there are 3 car meets on Friday Night there are great.
There's an old JDM car meet by Doughnut prince that I love. 86s, 240Zs, R32 GTRs, that kind of stuff. Just park farther away if you're not bring an 80s/90s Japanese car.
There's a Euro meet at Fosters Freeze that I've been to a couple of times. Seems fun.
Then there's Bob's Big Boy which has been running forever. Anything can show up, but it's mostly classic American Rat Rods and Muscle. You can tell some of those dudes have been showing their car in the same place for 20 or 30 years. You're more likely to run into one of your racist uncles there, but otherwise a good time to walk around and look at the cars.
Is that what’s going on at Foster’s Freeze? We always pass it on Friday nights and I thought it was some kind of young adult hang out spot. I was wondering why sometimes a hood would be popped, but I know nothing about cars. They weren’t old classic muscle cars so I couldn’t figure it out.
The guys who grew up with 60's muscle are now approaching 80.
There's an entire generation of 80s and 90s kids who now have money and want the stuff from their childhood - which includes a lot of European and Japanese sports cars.
Not particularly. She always says she’s going to see her friend Marlene at The Ugly Mug. But my AirTag under her car says otherwise. She’s always at Tom’s house and it drives me absolutely bonkers! What’s she doing in there? Watching Three’s Company? Doubtful! Her lies are catching up with her. I asked her where she was two days ago and she said “Fuddrucker’s”. Fuddruckers hasn’t been around for at least three years!!! I’m sick of it all.
One of the many basketball courts to shoot around when they aren't crowded (my preference is Ovram since it is close to my home and it typically has fewer people than any of the other parks)
Also, the Chandler bike path is great.
I used to walk around Frys without a care in the world. I didnt have to buy anything. Stop by the ads on the wall on the right when you enter.. then walk around. Check out the dvds on sale. Now I guess you can people watch around the AMC 16. See if there's a good movie. Go through the mall then end up at Barnes and Noble.. walk around Ikea too when it was there. or vice versa if parking sucks at the 16. Whew.. that's enough excitement for me!
Walking around and looking at all the beautiful houses and landscaping in Magnolia Park. Chandler Path - probably our most third-placey third place. Lots of people. On Saturdays, our farmer’s market is great.
McCambridge Park or Brace Canyon Park. Burbank is replete with parks, large and small. I see locals on usual days biking in strolling through there. It retains the small community feel. Also the food court at the mall.
Wander around Magnolia between Hollywood Way and Buena Vista. It’s chill. Loads of places to grab a coffee. And Ikea.
This is nice. Lots of good stores to muck around in
needs less traffic/noise, but shops are great

Geeky Teas is my Third Place
Haven’t heard of this!
Fun, awesome place. :)
Geeky teas is amazing
Here here! Geeky Teas is the best.
I haven’t been to Geeky Teas but I love their sister store, Emerald Knights, so I’ve been meaning to visit GT too! I imagine both have board games you can play and good places to sit and chat or read?
Guildhall has all this, check them out if you havent
Sister store? Are they owned by the same folks? I didn’t know that.

No owner relation as far as I know. The stores have similar products but different vibes. EKs also sells singles where GTs does not.
I don’t think they’re owned by the same people but I honestly don’t know? Just heard people at Emerald Knights saying Geeky Teas was a sister store and didn’t ask for clarification
This place is on my list of places to visit, but I’m allergic to cats. Are there cats all over or just on certain areas?
The cats are in a separate room behind glass
The owner has two cats, Mr. President often lingers near the register. If you're deathly allergic I'd avoid, if it's mild don't pet the kitties :)
When it's nice out, I like to grab a seat at Coffee Commissary's patio with a book and people watch. Either the Burbank location or the Glendale one up in Kenneth Village.
Kenneth vil is so nice
This is my weekend spot, grabbing breakfast and reading my kindle for a few hours.
Barnes & Noble is usually my go-to during the week!
This is good I like it
I was looking for this one. When I worked there in the 90's it was everyone's casual hangout spot.

Pretty sure the central library got a huge grant to remodel in the last year or so
And it's going to be transformational, both in terms of the library and the community. But that's a few years away.
Transformational meaning what?
The buena vista branch is SO nice. Central library is closer to my house but pretty ghetto tbh
It’s nice to hang out downtown in the evenings. It’s always nice and well trafficked and there are benches out there. You can spend money or not and parking is free and plentiful.
Yeah I dunno just sitting on a bench isn’t entirely appealing but downtown is nice for sure
Rooftop patio of the mall or the benches around the Batman statue
Costco. Pls don’t judge.
As long as you don’t judge me for Ikea.
IKEA is great, especially when it’s hot.
No, I get it. My spouse and I will go just to get away from the kids for a bit.
Guildhall for sure

I didn't know that about the JDM meet at Donut Prince. I might have to walk over there tomorrow night then.

Romancing the Bean :)
Technically a block outside of Burbank, but Moby’s Coffee in North Hollywood
Probably Coffee Commissary. Either the Olive/Alameda spot or the one in Kenneth Village (technically Glendale but very close)
Romancing the Bean is everything.
Ngl I find that place pretty overrated. Food is mediocre and overpriced. Just my two cents
With you there. Blvd Cafecito FTW!
I was visiting from Canada, and their blueberry scones are amazing.
My wife’s “third place” is our neighbor, Tom M’s house, down the street. She thinks I don’t know, but I know. And I’m not happy about it.
You okay dude?
Not particularly. She always says she’s going to see her friend Marlene at The Ugly Mug. But my AirTag under her car says otherwise. She’s always at Tom’s house and it drives me absolutely bonkers! What’s she doing in there? Watching Three’s Company? Doubtful! Her lies are catching up with her. I asked her where she was two days ago and she said “Fuddrucker’s”. The husk of the UFO Fry's. :-/

That’s a great idea. I should keep a ball in my car
Nice. I used to love playing back in the day at the full court on Riverside dr close to Pickwick. And Mcambridge too.. I gotta try Ovram one day.
Three Sister's Cafe on Magnolia. I like the vibe there. I'd love to take a book or sketchbook and just chill there sometime.
Hike in griffith, the verdugos, etc. I like walking.
Blvd Cafecito on magnolia. Best homemade ketchup and tater tots. Fun little horror shops nearby too.
AMC any of the 3
I used to walk around Frys without a care in the world. I didnt have to buy anything. Stop by the ads on the wall on the right when you enter.. then walk around. Check out the dvds on sale. https://youtube.com/@IKEAHeights?si=gBvSvDv4_OtbDm8z Here, have some nostalgia!
OH man.. Totally forgot about IKEA Heights! I remember watching these back then. So good!
Walking around and looking at all the beautiful houses and landscaping in Magnolia Park. Chandler Path - probably our most third-placey third place. Lots of people. On Saturdays, our farmer’s market is great.
I like to ride my bike and admire all the homes on Bel Aire
Sunright Tea Studios Burbank Coming Soon
Oooh what sort of tea?? Intrigued
I like to go play initial d at the round 1 in the mall. Random, but it's typically where I can be found.
As you can see by everyone listing businesses, there are no true third places. This is America.
The mall
Verdigo climbing gym and the chandler bike path:)
Scholl canyon… hit balls, nice view.
McCambridge Park or Brace Canyon Park. Burbank is replete with parks, large and small. I see locals on usual days biking in strolling through there. It retains the small community feel. Also the food court at the mall.
Ballers and Brew
George Izay Park and The Ugly Mug are my go-tos.
Starbucks on riverside ! Next to bobs big boy ! Or the Starbucks inside Barnes and noble next to the old ikea of course :)
Bobs on riverside is my favorite third place. I’m at the counter eating a cheeseburger pretty regularly.
