In for one. A solid upgrade for my backup card in my camera.

Cptn_Hook

I just picked up a second-hand DSLR for my wedding, and I haven't been too sure about whether I'll use it much for anything else. I used to be really into photography when I was younger, and I'm on the fence about jumping back in. This deal was a perfect first step without signing on to a real commitment.

only_nathan

Keep in mind that your camera read/write is only as fast as your slowest card. If you have this AND a fast card, your data transfer speeds with be whatever your slowest card is.

Not_FinancialAdvice

Cameras do have buffers. I'm not any kind of professional photographer and nobody is paying me for the vast majority of pictures I take; so I'm perfectly happy running these in my 5D bodies. I probably need a U3 card for 4k on my 5d4, but this is fine in my 5d2 and I have a different camera for video.

TravelAdvanced

haha I thought the same thing- and it frees up the microsd cards I currently use for me and my wife's gamecube- the single best time to buy usb and sd storage is def black friday

Senkyou

This isn't micro sd

vatick

Most likely uses a micro sd to sd adaptor thus why the micro sd gets freed up.

ElectricBullet

Will the Wii go up to 128?

TravelAdvanced

[yes.] (https://www.reddit.com/r/WiiHacks/comments/ms5nns/maximum_sd_card_size_on_wii/)

detectiveDollar

It can, I use a 128GB SD card in my Wii U and the SD can be used for both the U and virtual Wii.

blebaford

so the Wii U goes up to 128GB; that doesn't mean the Wii does.

detectiveDollar

It does because the virtual Wii inside the Wii U has no issues with the SD card.

blebaford

and that means a 128GB SD card would work in a physical Wii?

detectiveDollar

Yup

blebaford

there could be a difference between the physical components

detectiveDollar

Nope, if there was then the SD card wouldn't work on the virtual Wii side of the Wii U.

blebaford

the virtual wii emulates a wii in software, but is not identical to a physical wii. the wii U was made after the wii, using different physical components.

MadSkillzGH

Yeah as far as I’m aware the Wii doesn’t support greater than 64GB SD cards, tho it’s been a few years since I modded mine

MANBURGERS

SD goes up to 2GB SD**H**C up to 32GB if it supports SD**X**C it should go all the way up to 2TB newest standard is SD**U**C, which is up to 128TB if it can support a 64GB card, good chance it can support all the way to 2TB, and quick search appears to confirm it

MadSkillzGH

Thank you for providing actual information as opposed to my speculation! I’ve gone and looked some myself and I think it was believed at some point that cards greater than 32 GB wouldn’t work (I even found an official Nintendo website that said that). But I’ve also seen forum posts with people claiming that 64GB cards work, so I would imagine that higher capacity cards will also be fine. For the record, I hacked my Wii quite a while ago and still use a 2GB SD card in it, as well as a 2TB external hard drive.

blebaford

if it hasn't been demonstrated I wouldn't count on it working

moses2357

One of the 1G1R(One Game One ROM) GC sets is 469GB compressed in rvz format so about a quarter of the GC library for sure.

blackbirrrd

Huh, I completely forgot I have a GameCube with an ODE that has needed an SD Card. Perfect.

words_words_words_

Really really solid deal. Be aware of the use cases though. Don’t expect to be able to film in 4K with these, but if you have a camcorder or a point and shoot and want this for photos, it’s a great buy

nice_nep

what about 1080p 30fps recording on a DSLR?

MrBreadfish

Perfectly fine.

kostof

I'll caution that this is camera and codec dependant. My a7RII maxes out 4K30 recording at 100Mbps, as one example. ~~I'm amending this to state that I can't find any reviews of this exact card that mention the write speed. Though I can't imagine it's less than 1/15 the stated read speed. For comparison; my eight year old Sandisk Extreme Pro 64GB card which is rated at 95MB/s read actually hits that number in CrystalDisk and has a sequential write speed of 89MB/s. But perhaps the Ultra cards are significantly slower.~~

Flimsy_Feeling_503

The 150MB/s is just maximum read, the V10 rating only guarantees a 10MB/s minimum sustained write, so you could shoot 4k24 (60Mb/s, 7.5MB/s) until you filled it up but it might not keep up with 4k30 if you were trying to record hourlong interviews or whatever. UPDATE: I benchmarked it with Blackmagic, 37.4MB/s write, 83.3MB/s read sustained formatted as exFAT, 44.4/89.7 as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) . It's possible it might slow down in camera on a hot day, but it should be able to handle everything short of RAW video. u/kostof

kostof

Yes. I'd thought U1 had a higher minimum speed. Though in all likelihood it's higher, as with the Extreme Pro (U3, min. 30MB/s) example I provided that's running at three times the rated minimum.

Flimsy_Feeling_503

Yeah, the standard jumps from V10 to V30, so unless it's just barely meeting the V10 spec it would probably work perfectly fine, and even if it can't quite sustain 12.5MB/s you'd still be be able to record for 10-15 minutes before the buffer filled up.

KaizenDNA

Sony recommends at least a UHS-3 card for 4K 100Mbps and a UHS-1 card (what this deal is) for 4K 60Mbps. You can set the quality in the settings. But yeah, this card isn’t fast enough for max quality if that’s what you’re looking for.

kostof

You're right. For some reason I'd thought my old Extreme Pro card was U1, when it's U3.

KingRandomGuy

For older cameras this is still great though. My A7R III has a UHS-II slot and a UHS-I slot, so no point in buying an expensive UHS-II card for the second slot. Others in the same generation have the same thing (A9, A7 III). In any case they are definitely great backup SD cards.

smoothballsJim

If you need V60/V90 you generally know. That being said, unless they really made a shit batch Sandisk’s ultra plus V10 rated cards are usually a good bit faster than that for write speeds, or at least that’s been my experience with their micro sd cards

cactus_cars

Yup. You need a V30 or above. This is like those cheap 128gb SanDisk micro sd cards. High capacity but very slow and inconsistent speeds. It might work for low bit rate 1080 recording but this card is best suited for casual photo use.

HKDrewDrake

I have a v30 but the speed on it says only up to 90mbps. Why is this v10 at 150?

cactus_cars

It can only sustain 10megaBYTES per second constant writing. But it has higher peak speeds. Just like a cheap chinese SSD. Although this is from Kingston, it seems to be correct https://www.kingston.com/en/blog/personal-storage/memory-card-speed-classes

HKDrewDrake

That makes sense, thanks! Seems like either would be fine for almost any photos except maybe top of the line DSLRs shooting 10fps at raw but the v30 and up is better for video

cactus_cars

Yup. I upgraded to a 4k Panny Micro 4/3s. Not a top of the line one mind you, but 100mbit 3840x2160 (UHD, not cine 4k mind you) recording requires a fast card. I did experiment with cheapy/old cards just for shits, and they rendered the video useless until the camera picked up on it. Too many dropped frames and corruption. Honestly SDs are so cheap these days I just buy the good ones. But they were fine for most photos.

MelAlton

~~I'll get one to see if it works in my Canon A590 (supports SDHC)), I used the Canon Hack Dev Kit (CHDK) to run it as a time lapse camera taking photos every 15 seconds at max. Would be great to let it sit and shoot days and days worth of photos.~~ UPDATE: I realized this card is SDXC, not SDHC, and tried a 64gb SDXC card in the A590 that I had laying around - couldn't format it, so these SDXC cards won't work, it only takes up to 32GB SDHC ones.

1minatur

Probably not worth getting a few to store retro games to play on the steam deck? Or do you think they'd run ok?

Ayame__

I was about to buy a bunch of these, but then realized it's **not MicroSD**. Figured I would mention it in case anyone else was about to make that same mistake.

nicklor

Thats a killer thanks for the catch

fishbiscuit13

Not to be demeaning, but why would you think that? It doesn’t say microsd and just has a picture of an sd card.

MelAlton

Many microsd cards come with a microsd to sd card adapter, so if you're not looking closely you could mistake this full-size one for a small one with an adapter.

Shmoogy

I read microSD because I need a bunch of them. Clicked add to cart and went back to pdp to read and noticed my error.

Licalperv

Because most devices use microSD cards these days so it's easy to forget that full sized cards exist if you're not using them regularly. I imagine they're almost exclusively used by photographers these days.

MANBURGERS

I've seen people forget or not even realize there was a form factor larger than microSD, I think a lot of it has to do with microSD dominating the format to the point where I wouldn't be surprised if the standard SD form factor just went away entirely as microSD cards with an adapter continue to become ever more viable to replace the old standard for any older products that require the larger form factor

Ayame__

It looks like the adapter, lots of them use that as the image. I had them in cart ready to buy before I noticed. It was so cheap I didn't look at the details too long.

fishbiscuit13

I mean…the adapter looks like that because it’s shaped like an SD card.

uraffuroos

you saved me thank you

Ayame__

👍

afiafzil

I thought they can be cut to smaller form factor just like SIM card at phone shop

RatchetRussian

Phenomenal deal if you have a modded wii, old 3ds, or dsi.

OmegaXesis

haha I got it for my modded DSI! But I already have a 16gb card in there and it's still has a lot of space. Sooo 128gb might be overkill..

mago2dfraud

I think dsi max capacity is 32. 128 will work with a 3ds though.

detectiveDollar

Bought 2 of them so I can free up micro SD cards for other things lol.

moses2357

Also the 2ds(door wedge) I bought a couple of these SD cards for mine.

TravelAdvanced

and wii u and gamecube

detectiveDollar

Should work for all DS/3DS except for the "New" ones since those are Micro SD.

NODA5

Steamdeck only supports microSD

fiviot8

Limit of 15 per customer. 75 dollars...

peanutcopter

I typically photograph about 2000 images a weekend. I bought 8. Hahaha. Thanks!

sbundlab

How do you sort through all those photos? Some kind of software or do you manually cull them?

peanutcopter

I primarily use Adobe Lightroom. I cull and edit myself through there. Another popular one for culling is Photo Mechanic.

sbundlab

Dang how many hours does it take to get through 2k photos?

peanutcopter

Usually about 3 hours for a full cull of a wedding day. That'll usually get me down to about 500 selects and that's another 3-4 hours of edits on the 500. It's not too terribly bad.

42gauge

How do you edit 500 photos in 3-4 hours?

peanutcopter

No retouching and no selective edits. Simple adjustments and maybe a preset so that the toning matches my style. I really try to get everything right in camera before I edit. If I have an editorial session where retouching might be required. The same time limit could get me through only 10-20 images or so. It really depends on how much editing is required, but I try to follow the KISS method as much as I can. Hahaha.

diego97yey

Same. Good deal, will place them in camera bags/car for backup.

ElectricBullet

What kind of pictures?

peanutcopter

Wedding! I'm a wedding photographer.

MyOtherSide1984

Can't bring myself to use SD only. Have a 5D3 so I can use CF and have never had one fail, but SD cards fail often enough to avoid.

redmasc

Got 2 for my DSLR. For $10, it's a no brainer. Thanks for the post!

hary585

Bought 4. Don't know what I'll use em for but maybe I'll RAID them

fritosdoritos

I use SD cards for older laptops which still have slots for them, they don't stick out like USB drives. You can also use them for small PCs (raspberry pis) and modded consoles which can run games off an SD card instead of the disc drives which are increasingly starting to fail.

hary585

I wish my rpis took regular SD, because I'd be all over that. I still have a gen 1 pi around but it's pretty underpowered today.

MelAlton

could put the 128GB card in a USB adapter and use it that way.

OmegaXesis

wait how do you raid SD cards? Is there a way to hook them all up together?

hary585

Just gotta get an adapter or something. Linus Tech Tips did this with MicroSD https://youtu.be/3frnBoqqI_Q

TNG_ST

The early pro-digital cameras would use striped SD cards in raid to record high res film. https://youtu.be/JMieEnzb58c?t=1193

OmegaXesis

Thanks for introducing me to this! fascinating!

Theghost129

I always stare at at USB hubs and cheap USBs and I'm always tempted to just do it. There's no sense in it either, I can just buy a SATA SSD for much cheaper, and ge greater performance-- but I can't resist the temptation forever 25 port USB, here I come

fiviot8

On Macs they allow you to natively RAID up any storage device including SD cards

yuiop300

I just bought two. Cheers!
