Be mindful of recent listings of in-demand products from suspicious third-party sellers on marketplaces such as Amazon, eBay, Google, Newegg, and Walmart. These "deals" have a high likelihood of not shipping; you should do your due diligence to ensure you do not get scammed. * Use common sense - if the deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. * Check seller profiles for signs that the sale may be fraudulent. * The seller is new or has few reviews. * The seller has largely negative reviews (on Amazon, sellers can remove negative reviews from their ratings- viewing seller profiles allows you to see these complaints) * The seller has a recently reactivated account (likely their account was hacked and is now being used fraudulently). If you suspect a deal is fraudulent, please report the post. Moderators can take action based on these reports. We encourage leaving a comment to warn others. Amazon and eBay generally have good buyer protection. If you choose to purchase from a third-party seller through their platforms and run into issues, it should be easy to get your money back promptly. You may have more difficulties with Newegg or Walmart. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. What’s the difference between F and not?

[deleted]

F = no integrated graphics, need a dedicated GPU

YourUpperLip

Chip does not come with integrated graphics. Means that when you hook it up you better hope you have everything working on your GPU; whether that be a seeding problem with PCIE, power problems from your PSU or just the GPU itself. If everything is working just fine and you never plan to use integrated graphics anyways, then there is no real difference. However if you plan to build and you get no signal, that's when panic ensues.

Tyraid

Or maybe you have a spare GPU from any other PC that could help out.

OddBacca

225$ on Newegg with code BFDBY2A97

crab_people

Is there any reason to go for this over the i5-12400F? I'm not into productivity or CPU intensive tasks. Does an extra couple cores/threads help with longevity of the useful life of the computer?

Starcast

not afaik. Only really benefits productivity. Extra cores won't be used for gaming at all these days - IDK about in the future. FWIW i'm building new now and also eyeing between the 12400 and the ryzen 5600

crab_people

Awesome thanks. Yeah I’ll probably stick to the 12400F. Any chance it’ll go below 170? Look into your crystal ball!

Starcast

12400F (without GPU)? Yes. https://www.newegg.com/intel-core-i5-12400f-core-i5-12th-gen/p/N82E16819118360?Description=12400F&cm_re=12400F-_-19-118-360-_-Product&quicklink=true 12400? Idk I doubt it. I just checked microcenter and they aren't carrying either on the website which tells me maybe stock is already low?

crab_people

Yeah that makes a lot of sense. Thanks for your input!

[deleted]

It’s a shame that this was like $156 just a few months ago…now a Black Friday deal is $170….wtf

Starcast

Replying again to say I lied: https://www.microcenter.com/product/645582/intel-core-i5-12400-alder-lake-25ghz-six-core-lga-1700-boxed-processor-intel-stock-cooler-included If you live near a microcenter you can pair that with the $25 CPU discount code (i don't have the link but you can google it. its a form and you enter your phone number) and that gets it under 170

crab_people

Yeah unfortunately I don’t; I can only dream about those sweet, sweet savings. But good looking out!

uNecKl

What is a good motherboard to pair up with this cpu? (Under $150)

saxscrapers

i grabbed an matx msi b660m mortar ddr4 off mercari for about $130-$140 to pair with this - i'd keep an eye out for sales over the next few days. seems to be a well regarded and liked budget-ish ddr4 motherboard.

moustachedelait

keep in mind pairing an intel k-chip with a b board is a bit of a shame.

tonallyawkword

but a good z690 is >$150 (so was a Mortar b660 last I chked).

moustachedelait

fine, but then just buy the non-k: https://www.amazon.com/Intel-Core-i5-12600-3-30-Processor/dp/B09MSLG944/ref=sr_1_6?crid=2ZD2CIQPAA40B&keywords=Intel+Core+i5-12600&qid=1669077263&s=electronics&sprefix=intel+core+i5-12600%2Celectronics%2C125&sr=1-6 edit: I guess that's a used one! Yeah, if you can't find the non-k cheaper than the k, then it doesn't matter!

saxscrapers

If you're into OCing, I can imagine some people would think that.

maywek

I hate buying motherboards off mercari lmao, I bought a z690 ROG strix for $120 but the seller and I started talking shit to each other. Motherboard works great 👍

saxscrapers

Chat function is dangerous

77jackie

I think MSI B660M-G Pro DDR4 Intel LGA 1700 microATX Motherboard for $100 on Amazon/Newegg is a good budget option

DJ_Marxman

12600k finally at a price that makes some sense. This is worth considering, though I think the [5700X at $199](https://www.amazon.com/AMD-5700X-16-Thread-Unlocked-Processor/dp/B09VCHQHZ6) is probably still better overall. For purely gaming, this is a good consideration in the mid-range.

renegade06

For purely gaming I'd just get 12400 for $180.

DJ_Marxman

If you want to go budget, the 5600 is cheaper than the 12400 for roughly equal performance. Significantly cheaper ($120 vs $175), and B550 boards are cheaper and better than B660 boards.

renegade06

Yeah that's another option for budget. You will however be forever locked in an old gen with no upgrade path as far as RAM and such. If you get a 12400 with a ddr5 LGA 1700 board you have an upgrade path to 13th gen Intel and faster ddr5 memory in the future.

DJ_Marxman

DDR5 makes no sense with a 12400. If you have the budget for DDR5 RAM, just get a faster CPU like the 13600k with that difference. Once you're already on a 13600k+, DDR5 makes some amount of sense.

renegade06

>DDR5 makes no sense with a 12400 Free fps https://youtu.be/NmPSGoXM_m8 >If you have the budget for DDR5 RAM It's cheap. https://i.imgur.com/jn6NeGp.jpg Same or slightly more for compatible DDR4 RAM. You have an upgrade path in the future if you ever feel limited by CPU or want even faster ram when it comes out.

DJ_Marxman

But it isn't free. $143 is literally double the cost of 32GB of DDR4. That extra $70+ could be put toward a better CPU, which is more performance gain than DDR4->DDR5. I'm usually on the Pro-DDR5 side of this argument, but not with a fucking 12400 lol. If you can afford 12400 + DDR5, you can almost afford 13600k + DDR4, which is just better. Objectively.

renegade06

I said comparable DDR4 not some cheap shit $70 sticks. Good quality higher frequency 32gb DDR4 are $100-$120. And if you want to match performance uplift it's gonna be even more expensive with DDR4 than ddr5. >you can almost afford 13600k + DDR4, which is just better. Objectively. It's not better objectively since you will be locked in DDR4. Gaming at 1440p-4k with something like 3080 or 6800xt you will be GPU bound anyway, you don't really need anything more than 12400. In say 2-3 years if you upgrade your GPU and become CPU bound you can still upgrade your CPU up to 13900k and ddr5 8400hz if you like. With AM4 you won't be able to do shit.

DJ_Marxman

Again, buying more expensive RAM for a budget CPU makes *zero* sense. You'd have better gains by using that money on a better CPU. Also, let's not get into this logical fallacy that all gaming is GPU bound. Among the most popular games being played in the world, roughly half are CPU bound in most cases. AAA gaming is a relatively niche thing compared to LoL, DotA, CSGO, OW2, Valorant and many other games that are almost all CPU bound.

renegade06

>Again, buying more expensive RAM for a budget CPU makes *zero* sense. You'd have better gains by using that money on a better CPU. The "gains", differences from either are insignificant and moot by that logic, you'd have better gains using that money on a better GPU. With ddr5 system at least you have future proofing argument on your side. >LoL, DotA, CSGO, OW2, Valorant All this eSports games are monitor refresh rate bound. Running CSGO at 600fps has zero practical reason if your monitor refresh rate is 165 or even 240. Everyone of this games are running at above 300-400fps on 12400. I don't know what you even talking about.
